Viza

Viza are back! The rock band discovered by Serj Tankian of System of a Down himself, will make another crazy Balkanic circus-like show on the ship, now supported by Italian metal band, Cayne. Viza use Eastern-Euro-pean music traditions and instruments ad oud, saz and tar, that you can hardly hear elsewhere - if you’re not frequenting Turkish folk music events. Having filled the ship’s concert hall in 2012, they are expected to bring all alternative music fans together again!

The voice of the early Transglobal Underground is even more popular in solo, using the Arabic tradition in Western music, such as hip-hop, reg-gae, and drumandbass. As a former belly-dancer, her character outshines every band, giving stunning performances all over Europe’s main festivals with hits like Mon amie la rose or I Put a Spell on You. In March, you can also hear the songs from her latest album, Mounqualiba.

Unknown Pleasures is the key album of post-punk - Joy Division’s mas-terpiece will live on long after Ian Curtis’ tragical passing away. The other founding members of the band, however, did not rest on their laurels, espe-cially Peter Hook, the extraordinary bassist: first a member of New Order, then, in 2008 he quit to form his own band, The Light the most authentic Joy Division tribute ever. Don’t miss this superb chance to lose control!

Technokunst, having won the IPC Award for Hungary’s second best party promoter team is now a guarantee for quality. You can enjoy the most stunning visuals along with the most exciting newcomers and the biggest names of today’s techno music. Ben Sims is one of the big ones: a producer for 20 years, a curator and label-founder, he has the skills and the beats to make this spring’s first Techokunst memorable.

One of the fastest guitarist of all time, Paul Gil-bert stops by in Budapest on his Vibrato tour, and shares all his new ideas with us. Being a found-ing member of Mr.Big, Gilbert now publishes solo, and tours with a set of musicians who he has recorded Vibrato with, an album inspired by 70s fusion jazz. Gilbert now shows the Hungarian audience the reason why he was employed as the youngest lecturer in the Guitar Institute of Tech-nology ever.

Mats Gustafsson is appreciated for his numerous avantgarde jazz projects, having played at A38 side by side with Balázs Pándi and Merzbow. This time he performs with his improvisative free jazz trio, having Johan Berthling on bass, guitar and Hammond organ, and Andreas Werliin on drums, who is also a returning visitor on A38’s decks, being half of the duo Wildbirds & Peace-drums.

Noir is back – in films, music, theatre and fashion, the smoky charm of Marlene and Marilyn is trendy again. Femme Schmidt, arising from Berlin is the knower of all burlesque and cabaret practices and sees the whole complexity of the 1920s, regarding them not as an era but as an attitude filled with freedom, seduction and longing. She was discovered by Guy Chambers and is able to create the atmosphere of the original Berlin-style cabaret. The support will be All Mankind, an up and coming indie band from Australia.

Eighteen Icelandic musicians on stage at the same time - this can’t be anything else but Samúel Jón Samúelsson Big Band. As a former member of Jagúar, Samúelsson writes funk-jazz music for his own band now. Being part of the series Night of Contrast, SJS’s Big Band has a support act from Hungary that night, that is Bass Loco, a former trio playing now as a quartet. After the con-certs, the German dj, Daniel Best will stand behind the turntables.

Septeto Internacional are the seven-piece collec-tive of Swissman Martin Fleiner, who selected the best Afro-Cuban jazz musicians, added a bit of rumba, mambo and salsa, and has so far released three albums. This is going to be their first time ever in Hungary, however, Latin music has a mas-sive audience in Budapest, thanks to special tal-ents like Cuban immigrant Elsa Valle, leading her own band, Rumba Caliente.

Scott Monteith from Canada has gained acknowl-edgement in the early 2000s when he started to produce badass dub tracks under the Deadbeat alias, mixed with techno, house and any style that fit in his playful range of music selection. As a lecturer of Red Bull Music Academy and one of the key developers of Ableton, he has become the master of his art and a must-see act for every open-minded electronic music fan.

As Hungary’s favourite band with reggae, dancehall, hiphop and funk influ-ences, Irie Maffia takes some responsibility in social issues, that is why you can hear the songs from their new album - one month before their official release. By purchasing a ticket for this exclusive show, you support the Asso-ciation on Early Childhood Intervention for children with delayed or impaired development.

Mads and Esben told us about how they have grown big in and outside their home country and what we can expect from them in the future.

Where do you get all that energy that we can experience during your live shows from and what was the weirdest thing that happened to you on stage so far?

It’s us. It’s just something that happens when letting go.

The weirdest thing was that in Belgium the stage was invaded by a walking-impaired old lady with crutches. She in-sisted on staying on stage and there was a very weird fi ve minutes.

Was it your plan from the beginning to make videos for as many of your songs as possible?

We came up with a video project and had the wish to have videos made for every song of the album. And now it’s realised - the last 4 videos will come out within the next couple of months which is super exciting.

What do you think being Danish means now in the music industry? Does it have any eff ects on your music?

Being Danish means that we live in a tiny country and we have to go abroad to get

an audience. In some ways Denmark is a numb little welfare bubble but on the other hand our state supports music export with tax money so it evens up.

i heard you’ve been touring in China. how did you get there and what was it like?

One of the fi rst things we did was to de-cide that we wanted to tour in China. We needed to get out of that bubble and we wanted to do something that very few Danish artists had done before. Some days we played in front of 8 kids in a bar and the next day we would play in front of 10.000 black haired screaming teen-age girls. Like most adventures it was unpredictable, entertaining and over-whelming.

With Dave M. Allen and Mark Ralph, do you think you’ve found your “dream pro-ducers” or you plan to work with other big shots?

It was amazing working with Mark and Dave but how it’s going to be done on re-cord number two we haven’t decided yet. The future will show.

Do you have any messages to the hun-garian fans?

Looking forward to goulasch and rave!

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘Tripolie’, a Ukranian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. The name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. The re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, mu-sicians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cul-tural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, fi ve bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinat-ing venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the fl ag-ship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of Europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘The World’s Greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of Lonely Planet in 2012.

A38 Ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of Petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “Petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public trans-port ships.

The concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink. The restaurant off ers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 HUF.

Our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.For our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.

What are the connections between a weekend cottage in Hungary and one in the Ukraine, or a Soviet dacha in Lviv or in Kiev? Andrej Tóth tells us stories about these connections, beyond the Zhigulis. Themes of his former exhibitions recur: the sultry eroticism of dolce vita, the clumsy characters painted with naive grace who may be more familiar to us on this side of the Leitha river than the other. On these oil paintings on used wooden decks, we can again get an insight into the personal memories of the Ukrainian-born artist Andrej Tóth.

This exhibition aims to present the works of current and freshly-graduated students of University Moholy-Nagy. These works are fine art pieces in relation to bereavement, passing away, trauma and the act of remembrance. Now the critical reflexivity and conceptual alienation mixes up with open self-therapy, rituals and kitsch. With their visual expressions, these young artists try to speak out the alphabet of a funeral speech in a culture where the meaning of mourning is hardly readable.

Andrej Tóth has won the Award for Best Art Poster of the Year three times as A38’s graphic artist and his posters are already part of the Hungarian National Gallery’s collection. After winning the Golden Drawing-Pin Prize, he was elected to be a member of the Hungarian Poster Association.
