HIGHLIGHTS2

Although Sonic Youth unfortunately called it a day four years ago, singer-guitarist Thurston Moore has been active ever since. His third solo album, Demolished Thoughts came out around the breakup of the band, and last year he released his latest work titled The Best Day. Augmented by My Bloody Valentine bassist Debbie Googe and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, Moore is set to play one of the year’s most anticipated club concerts in Hungary. June 3 may as well be the best day of the year in terms of rock concerts.

Noted Hungarian trumpet player Lőrinc Barabás has performed alongside Bonobo, Nicola Conte, Valerie June and Erik Truffaz. This time he is presenting his new side: the music will be played through laptop, keyboards and effects. The balance of the synthetic sounds, the trumpet solos and the improvisation will melt into a fascinating mixture.

Peet Projectalbum launch gig

A Hungarian band that’s also starting to make a name abroad! Peet Project first came to prominence in 2009 when they won the talent contest of a radio station, and two years ago, they already played at a noted jazz festival in Los Angeles. This will be their first ever concert aboard the A38, where they are presenting their latest album called Love, full of songs that mix vintage funky atmosphere with modern electronica.

They are back and they are black: pioneering American doom metal band Saint Vitus, following in the footsteps of legendary Black Sabbath, are returning for another concert to the Ship with their cruel riffs and heavy rhythms. An important difference between their last A38 concert and this one is that they’re coming now with their original singer Scott Reagers, therefore you should expect material from the early period (1979-1985).

One of the most emblematic personalities of the new blues guitarist generation is Albuquerque native singer-guitarist-songwriter Ryan McGarvey, who’s still in his twenties. He’s not only admired by his contemporaries, but also by such amazing blues legends as Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and received a lot of praise by the late B.B. King as well. McGarvey won the high prize of the Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, and he is presenting his latest album on the A38 tonight.

INTERVIEW AT

BLOG.A38.HU

Formed ten years ago in California, The Glitch Mob have become known for their bombastic bassmusic sound. Their performances can almost be called euphoric rock concerts - they have proved that pitching can be as energetic and sexy as the wildest rock shows. Last year they released their latest input titled Love Death Immortality, which hit the Billboard Top 15. Interview on page 6.

If you’re into screamo, then the A38 is the place to be on this night. Post-hardcore giants La Dispute, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, are returning to Hungary for an amazing show full of screams, headbanging, crowd surfing and stagediving. Originally the band was supposed to play in a smaller club, but due to the massive ticket demand, they will hit the stage of the Ship. Since their previous Hungarian visit, they’ve released their latest album called Rooms Of The House which even received a rave review from weekly British music mag NME. We strongly advise you to come on time because support band Two Inch Astronaut is also worth checking out.

Hip hop came from America but in the past 2-3 decades, French hip hop has become one of the most unique scenes in pop music. Four-piece Toulouse outfit Scarecrow mix hip hop and blues which means that they go back to the roots, mixing the classical with the contemporary, the ancient with the modern, both in French and English. The end result is of course not so scientific, but overwhelming and fantastic. Support comes from local collective BeatKOHO.

As the frontman-songwriter of Fran Palermo, Henri Gonzalez might be well-known to local audiences. The young musician has been living in England for two years now - since then he has written a solo track and a music score and he’s currently working on some songs under his moniker Ruby.

San Francisco-based band Monophonics borrow from the traditions of 60’s/70’s Motown and psychedelic soul a la Sly & The Family Stone. They count as an amazing live band for ten years now and they played this kind of music a lot earlier than several other acts in recent years. Don’t miss local opening act The SoulClap Band who will provide a memorable DJ set in similar genres.

One of the most exciting and popular formations of the world music scene is Turkish group Kolektif Istanbul, who, as the name suggests, created their unique world out of mixing musical styles and cultures. Bulgarian wind instruments, Balkan woodwinds, Asian percussion - the end product is modern and authentic at the same time, full of life.

Since their formation in 2004, Special Providence have become one of the best-known Hungarian progressive rock bands internationally. Their 2012 long-player titled Soul Alert was number one on the progressive chart in the USA. Now they’re working on their new album, and they are showcasing a few tunes from it on the A38. There’s been a change in the line-up: at the beginning of this year, Zoltán Cséry has been replaced by Zsolt Kaltenecker on keyboards.

Hungarian guitar pop band Amber Smith were at the peak of their popularity in the second half of the 2000’s, and in recent years, there was a bit of a silence surrounding them. The fans had to wait until this April when their latest output Modern was released. Reflecting on their best-received album Introspective, it is totally safe to claim that Amber Smith are back in form. They’re going to present the new songs on the A38 Roof Terrace where you can also expect some older tunes as well.

The Biebers, Klusters, Necc Party

Special Providence

Emblematic figures of the world music scene on the A38 Ship: guitarist-violinist-singer-songwriter Miklós Bóth, involved in several bands, and noted player of wind instruments, Balázs Szokolay will hit the stage of the A38 Roof Terrace, opening for Irani-born but Berlin-based Mohammad Reza Mortazavi, who’s a young but already legendary percussionist. Everything is guaranteed for a mini world music festival.

One of the most promising local young pop bands, The Biebers are led by Peti Puskás who came to prominence when he appeared on a popular talent contest on TV. On this night, they get support from Klusters, playing psychedelic electro-pop, and after the gigs the Necc Party collective will play the pop hits of the 90’s and the 2000’s on the Roof Terrace.

If it’s Tuesday, it must be Random Trip! At the end of the club season and with the arrival of the summer, regular program Random Trip moves from the Concert Hall onto the Roof Terrace. Budapest’s most popular club event mixes every possible genre from rock to hip hop, from indie to soul. This night sees the performance of Andrew Hefler, but Random Trip is worth checking out every Tuesday.

Not so long ago, Boglárka Csemer was a singer-songwriter who was only well-known in her own sub-genre, but recently she has become a famous star after winning a talent show and therefore qualifying for the next Eurovision contest. By the time this magazine goes to press, the contest has been held, so all we can do is root for her and (hopefully) celebrate with her on the terrace of the A38.

An antimasque is a comic or grotesque dance, and Antemasque is the latest band of the two musicians with the unruliest hairdos in the his-tory of rock music: Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala. They first became well-known as core members of cult post-hardcore band At The Drive-In during the second half of the 1990’s. Their final album Relationship Of Command even had mainstream success, but about a year after its release, in the spring of 2001, ATDI called it a day.

After the break-up, Rodriguez-Lopez and Bixler-Zavala focused a bit on their dub project De Facto, but not for long - they soon formed their next outfit called The Mars Volta. During its decade-plus existence, the group had 17 different members apart from the two frontmen, includ-ing Rodriguez Lopez’s brother Marcel, or such unofficial members as John Frusciante and Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame (The Mars Volta even toured with RHCP). Their experimental jazz-punk-rock mix-ture was not an easy affair to listen to, nevertheless they still managed to reach cult status.

Three of their albums made the Billboard Top 10 and in 2009 they even won a Grammy in the category Best Hard Rock Performance for their song Wax Simulacra. Unfortunately that was the time when in-ner turmoil started to appear in the band, even the two core members weren’t getting along too well, with Rodriguez-Lopez focusing on his solo career and his new project Bosnian Rainbows. The final MV al-bum, Noctourniquet came out in 2012, and after its tour, the name was retired. The two afro-haired musicians went their separate ways, but they buried the hatchet pretty soon: instead a Mars Volta reunion, they announced a new band called Antemasque.

Soon a single with the title 4AM was released, followed by the epony-mous debut album, not much later. Drumming duties were taken by former Mars Volta tour musician Dave Elitch, and bass was provided by none other than the mighty Flea (again, not an official member of the band). The songs are on the brink of punk and prog rock, and accord-

ing to the setlists, Rodriguez-Lopez and Bixler-Zavala don’t live in the past - they stick to the new stuff, with the occasional (and surprising) Joe Jackson cover.

Although he’s still in his 20’s, Ryan McGarvey is already mentioned as the next Eric Clapton or B.B. King and one of one of today’s compel-ling live blues performers. He’s a talented guitarist and singer, who is still far from his creative peak, and his first concert in Hungary is surely something you shouldn’t miss. We sat down to ask him about his musi-cal roots, favourites and a lot more.

How did you discover the blues? Was it a family heritage or you bumped into it on your own? I grew up on my parents’ record collection. Which consisted of clas-sic hard rock like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc. From this I traced their influences back to the Blues. I found guys like Leadbelly, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. That’s where it all really began I think. What other music genres are close to you?I like a lot of different kinds of music actually. I really like alternative rock these days with bands like Royal Blood, Arctic Monkeys and The Black Keys etc., but I also really enjoy classical pieces as well as even some country music. Which blues guitarists have shaped your style?Really there are too many to list. Of course B.B. King, Albert King, Fred-die King. Other staples like Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Elmore James. As well as others like Sunhouse, and R.L.Burnside. The 90s con-temporary artists like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Chris Duarte, and later Joe Bonamassa also were a big part of my influence.

How did you first react when you received praise from Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton? When I received the call that I had won the Play Crossroads contest, and I had been chosen by Eric Clapton out of 4000+ entries from around the world – I was in a hotel room in Las Vegas, and I started jumping around the room. It’s definitely a huge honor and something I’ll never forget! If you could set up the ultimate blues band, who would be in it?If I could set up the ultimate blues band... That’s a hard one ‘cause I think there’s been a few groups that had the right formula, and got it right. Such as Double Trouble from Stevie Ray Vaughan. Or even Cream - it was an amazing blues band really. What are your all-time top 5 favorite blues tracks and blues albums, respectively?I’m bad when it comes to picking favorites… But I’d have to say Robert Johnson playing Cross Road Blues. B.B. King’s The Thrill Is Gone. Fred-die King’s Hideaway. Muddy Waters’s Hoochie Coochie Man. And John Lee Hooker’s Boom Boom.

edIT, Boreta and Ooah, aka The Glitch Mob is known for their explosive, rock ‚n’ roll-influenced take on bleepy electronica and heavy hip-hop-influenced basslines. Wherever they hit the stage, they rip off the dancefloor and leave nothing but fans who keep repeating this was the show of their lives. Now that they are returning to Budapest after four years, we interviewed them about their astonishing live shows, their latest album and a lot more.

You’ve already performed in Budapest four years ago. What kind of memories do you have about that night?Budapest is such a beautiful city - it was amazing driving around and seeing all of the architecture. Before our show last time, they took us to get some amazing Hungarian food. The people there were very enthusiastic about the music, and knew all of the melodies. And there are a lots of good musicians who live there, one of our buddies AMB is from Budapest and he’s great. You’ve said in an interview, that the relationship with your fans has actually influenced your creative process in making Love Death Im-mortality. Could you open up a bit more about that?We keep a very close relationship with our fans online and IRL, and al-ways have. After we released Drink The Sea, people would send us lots of stories about how the music affected them. We heard stories about how it helped people through dark times, and these really impacted the way we think about music. We realized that it’s much bigger than us, and it really becomes a part of people’s lives.

Comparing it to your first album, Drink To Sea, Love Death Immortality is much grander and epic. What do yout think triggered this change?

We wanted to take the same feelings we explored in Drink The Sea and craft it for the live stage. It’s an album with a lot of energy, this is just what came out. We didn’t think about it too much.

Playing your instruments towards the crowds seems very important to you during your live sets. What is the purpose of showing the crowd what you are playing? We wanted to break down the wall that is created by laptop perfor-mance DJing that we used to do. It’s boring to watch someone stare at a computer, and it’s not interesting for us to be the ones staring at the computer screen during a show. With all of the gear tilted towards people, it allows them to see more of what we are doing. More impor-tantly though, it creates a more fun dynamic with the crowd. Everyone feels included. It helps the energy because there’s nothing hidden. What is the weirdest thing that happened during a Glitch Mob gig?One time someone through a high heel at me and it hit my face and then landed on my computer. There are many stories like that. We look forward to seeing what adventures happen in Budapest.

OUR GUESTS’ FAVORITESIf you find it difficult to choose a dish from our menu, we can try to help you by letting you know which are our guests’ favorite meals.

One of our guests’ favorites is the Gambas Pil-Pil (hot shrimp in tomato sauce). We prepare it this way: we sear a lot of garlic in hot olive oil, we slice up fresh peeled tomatoes into cube shapes and we season them with our kitchen’s secret spices. Meanwhile we roast the shrimp which can be added with olive oil filled with tomatoes and garlic. Afterwards we can already eat this delicious meal with fresh baguette.

Our most successful main course has proved to be our home-made “tócsni” pie, which we fill with veal paprikash - this is a typically Hungarian and filling meal.

Our lady guests like the grilled chicken breast with leek and filled with feta cheese the most, which we serve with green spice gnocchi.

To end a pleasant evening, our most popular dessert is the limeo cheese cake.

The staff of the A38 Restaurant have had the chance to enjoy their love towards Italian cooking, therefore we can broaden our menu with a monthly Italian offer from the middle of June. You can eat these delicacies on the popular terrace of the A38.

HISTORY

8

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘Tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. The name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. The re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musi-cians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of Europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘The World’s Greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of Lonely Planet in 2012.

A38 Ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of Petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “Petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public transport ships.

The concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink. The restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 HUF.

Our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.For our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.
