There’s nothing funkier today than drummer-guitarist duets, so why not come and see inspector Cluzo, one of French’s favourite bands? We have more: Wattican Punk Ballet, the crazy sister and brother duet brings back the best moments of The White Stripes, while adding fresh elements into their live shows - handmade stage decoration, and this time some guest musicians, saxophonist istván grencsó and Anastasia Razvalyaeva on harph.

Shipp started playing the piano at the age of six, and since then, he founded his very own, percussive playing style. After performing with excellent jazz musicians, he turned towards hiphop music and made many collaborations with names like eL-P and DJ Spooky. A true prodigy in Budapest, whose show you cannot miss! As for the support band, you have the chance to see Magony, traditional hungarian gypsy music fused with jazz, for strings.

otto von Schirach is a hardcore iDM artist of indian and german descent, who has also been working together with Modeselektor and Skinny Puppy. his costumes and performances are not for the faint of heart, and neither is his music. otto has just released Supermeng at Monkeytown Records and returns to Budapest with hungarian drummer prodigy Balázs Pándi as 666 Cent for one hell of a show.

Nouvelle Vague (FR)

Page 4: A38 Magazine / 2012 November

Nouvelle Vague is the celebrated French cover band, returning to Budapest on 23 November. Marc Collin, the mastermind behind Nouvelle Vague tells us some about the band before their Budapest show.

How came the idea to work together with Zula, dancer of The Crazy Horse?

Zula was searching for a composer/producer for her music, we met and we have decided to work together on her album. Then i saw her dancing at The Crazy horse a few times and it has come to my mind that it can be great to have her on stage with us. She brought a really interesting character in our new show, both singing and dancing. i’m happy she’s joined the project.

Your new show uses many elements from musicals. Is any of the band members a musical fan?

Well, i know that Liset is a great fan of Suzanne Vega. i’m a big fan of all these new wave bands from the 80s, Cure, human League, New order etc.

Why „Nouvelle Vague”? What is your personal connection with new wave?

Nouvelle Vague means both new wave and bossa nova, and actually i thought it was interesting to link all this movements so different.

What is your criteria when choosing singers? The audience can easily notice that they all have some ‘playful elegance’ in common. By this, do you want to represent an image of French women in general?

yes, somehow. i like them to be glamour, elegant but also sexy and fun, maybe this is very French, i don’t know. i always hear from foreigners that girls in Paris are beautiful and got their own style and even if most of our singers are not French, they are living in France and are inspired i guess.

After all your shows you made here, we can state that Budapest loves you. Have you ever managed to do some sightseeing here? Have you met any fans personally?

yes we had the time to visit a bit the city, it’s really beautiful, we had a good white wine from there i remember on the river and it was magical. yes i made some friends and i’m still in contact with them so i’m looking forward to see them in November.

Attila Szűcs made his first painting of himself planking in 1997 - being stiff, his arms pressed tightly to his body. however, it was only in 2011 when he first saw photos of planking on the internet.

This type of activity has a simple goal, but it makes absolutely no sense, demonstrating nothing else than the situation itself. its only meaning is to be at an unusual place, or acting unusual at a common place. Being passive while consuming energy, being busy doing nothing. Lying on the floor but being okay, stiff, but not dead. or just idling between two ends, god-knows-why.

Szűcs is a real visual shocker - the recurring theme of his paintings is „Ding an sich”, thing-in-itself as philosophy says. Now he presents us his series about planking people - girls, boys, adults and we are left standing and asking: „okay, but why?”

The exhibition will be opened by Balázs Lévai, music bySaiid and Újonc (Akkezdet Phiai hiphop group).

The exhibition can be visited from 6 to 24 November from 11h to 18h.Please register at +36-1-464-3940.

New menu at A38 Restaurantin the beginning of this year’s frosty season, istván halász, chef of A38’s classy but friendly restaurant created a new menu keeping in mind all the richness and colourfulness of autumn and winter. offering a good price for value, this menu is shorter than its predecessor and has traditional hungarian meals like goulash, grilled trout and poppy seeds and sour cherry cake, but also uses elements from e. g. Asian cuisine. As istván says, his aim was to use quality materials to create delicious dishes that are presented and served with meticulous care. Come in and try our goose liver terrine or steamed ox cheek, or have a homemade walnut cake with a cup of coffee on one of these cold days, in A38 restaurant!

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘Tripolie’, a Ukranian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. The name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. The re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, mu-sicians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cul-tural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinat-ing venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the flag-ship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘The World’s greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of Lonely Planet in 2012.

A38 Ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of Petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “Petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public trans-port ships.

The concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink. The restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12 PM to 3 PM for 1150 hUF.

our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.For our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.
