OFSAA’s new logo has officially been launched! The new logo for OFSAA was approved at the April Executive Council meeting and comes just in time to celebrate OFSAA’s 60th anniversary.

The decision for OFSAA to have a new logo comes after an extensive decision making process, and the final logo was chosen from a selection of two after much deliberation.

OFSAA’s new brand and logo demonstrate OFSAA moving towards the future. It reflects the amazing volunteers and student-athletes that shape our OFSAA community. Because the logo is so versatile, it will soon be even more recognizable than the old one, with the possibility of it being used in so many places.

Since 1948, OFSAA has only made minor changes to the logo. This is the first time OFSAA has had a complete logo redesign.

For an electronic version of the new logo or a copy of the brand guidelines manual which states how to use it, please contact Lindsey Evanoff at [email protected] or (416) 426-7437.

OFSAA Unveils New Logo!

Dear athletes, parents, school staff and coaches,

I am both honoured and excited about having this opportunity to serve as your OFSAA President during the next two years. My time served as Vice President over the last two years has certainly given me a chance to learn and appreciate what the OFSAA organization is all about. A huge thank you to Tracey Parish for

her guidance and support in preparing me for my new role. I know she will continue to provide advice through her position as Past President.

I look forward to working with an amazing OFSAA staff and a dedicated Executive Council. Most of all, however, I look forward to spending time and sharing experiences with our student-athletes and their coaches.

I truly understand the value of high school athletics and the importance of ‘education through school sport’. Personally I am a product of an Ontario educational

system that recognizes how student success can be achieved through athletic participation in our schools. Real life lessons, an opportunity for personal growth, and the development of citizenship among the physical benefits are all reasons to continue to make this investment in our children through school sport.

My university-based children too have been blessed by their experiences in high school sport. Their lives have been positively influenced by teachers/coaches who volunteered countless hours of professional and helpful training, away from their own family and friends. It is a true circle of life, that someday current students may be mentoring the next generation.

I would like to thank school administrators for their ongoing support of our staff and students, and of the athletic programs in our schools. Also a thank you to our corporate sponsors, and to the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and Ministry of Education for the financial support which allows OFSAA to provide a variety of athletic programs and championships for our students.

In the coming year, the promotion of a Long Term Athletic Development (LTAD) model will be a key focus.

President’s Message

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!Log on to www.ofsaa.on.ca and tell us your opinion by taking part in our latest poll.

It is also important for us to continue to enhance our relationship with our provincial and national counterparts in the sports that we provide for our student-athletes. As well, we will spend time connecting with our elementary school teachers and students. What a great time to be involved in school athletics.

Wishing you well in all of your athletic endeavours. Leave time to celebrate your successes and enjoy the special moments along the way.

Yours in athletics,

Martin RitsmaOFSAA President

Martin Ritsma will serve a two-year term as OFSAA President, from 2008-2010. He is currently the principal of F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham, and has been heavily involved in all levels of school sport at the local, regional, and provincial levels.

Up until his recent transfer to Wingham, he spent his entire career in education in Stratford, most recently at Stratford Central Secondary School. He dedicates much of his time to his community in Stratford, sitting on various boards and committees of charitable organizations.

Mr. Ritsma is married to Kathryn and has two children, Jillian and Ben.

Hosting an Invitational High School Event? An OFSAA-sanctioned event means that all participants are OFSAA-eligible and a teacher will attend with the team. If you wish to have your invitational meet or tournament sanctioned by OFSAA, complete the form available on our website, with all required signatures, and send it to your OFSAA rep for Association approval. All OFSAA-sanctioned events appear on the OFSAA website.

Inviting teams from another province or the US?You must complete the appropriate form from the website. Failure to obtain OFSAA-sanction for your event (meet, tournament, exhibition game, etc) when

inviting teams from outside Ontario may result in the visiting team being sanctioned by their home association. Do not neglect this step.

Attending an Invitational Event Out-of-province?Interprovincial competitions require OFSAA sanction (form is on the website).

Cross country and track and field events in the US require OFSAA sanction (form is on the web). Many states are now requiring sanction by the home association for other sports, so check before you go.

All applications for sanction must be received at least 30 days prior to the date of the invitational event.

The Football Bowls will be held this year on Wednesday, December 3, and the climate-controlled Rogers Centre will provide more comfortable playing conditions for the student-athletes who participate.

OFSAA thanks the Rogers Centre and the Buffalo Bills for supporting high school football.

Alistair Beauprie (NCSSAA)Alistair is a graduate of Colonel By Secondary School in Gloucester, and plans to attend McGill University to study commerce in the fall. He has participated in football, rugby, cross country and rowing during his high school years, while still maintaining an average over 90% in the challenging International Baccalaureate program. He was also involved in the tutoring program, fundraising activities, and participated in the Relay for Life.

School sport has been a balancing force in his life, a chance to reduce stress, a self challenge, and an opportunity to build teamwork skills, all traits which will serve him well throughout life. He believes the determination, energy and leadership skills developed through school sport have enabled him to excel academically also.

Meagan Nederveen (GHAC)As a student at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Hamilton, Meagan was involved in all aspects of school life: sport teams, athletic council, and student government. She not only participated in cross country, track and field, volleyball and soccer, but also ‘gave back’ to sport by assisting with the development of a house league for

elementary students in local schools.

School sport has taught Meagan how to deal with adversity in a positive manner, how to understand and appreciate the impact of hard work and strong leadership, and has shaped her views on goal setting and success. Despite a heavy workload, she has maintained a high academic standing and plans to study kinesiology at McMaster next year.

Stephanie Godard (CISAA)School sport, during her years at Bayview Glen School in Toronto, has taught Stephanie fair play, time management, discipline, and the value of hard work. She participated in swimming, tennis, basketball and track, and recognizes the role and importance of teacher-coaches, teammates, and opponents in her many successes in these sports. Her caring attitude and leadership skills are evident both in school as a peer tutor, and in the community where she volunteers with many organizations.

Stephanie still managed to keep her academic marks in the 90s despite her busy lifestyle. Sport will continue to play an important role in her life as she sets out on a new path in the life sciences program at Queens University next fall.

Canada Basketball Scholarship Recipients 2008The Canada Basketball Be One Scholarship Program awards one male and one female student-athlete each year who show academic success, leadership in the amateur sport community though participation as a high school basketball athlete, and other school and community activities. Congratulations to the two student-athletes who are this year’s recipients of the Canada Basketball Scholarship.

Jordan Mann (SOSSA)Jordan will be attending Brock University this fall to study Kinesiology. While attending Westlane SS, his academic average has hovered around 90 per cent, and he has been a member of the Principal’s Honour Roll every semester. He has also won several awards, including the Rotary Club Medal for outstanding achievement, the Optimist Youth Citizen of the Year Award, and

the Niagara Falls Red Raiders (traveling basketball team) Award for volunteerism. He has also donated much of his time to volunteering in his community, as well as his basketball team and other sports teams.

Brian Maxwell Scholarship Recipients 2008 Volunteer Service AwardNamed after successful distance runner and co-founder of Power Bar, the Brian Maxwell Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to two student-athletes who have participated in track and field or cross country throughout their high school career, and are continuing their post-secondary education at a Canadian college or university. Rob Jackson and Katie Anderson each received awards in the amount of $5,000. Because the competition this year was so close, two additional student-athletes also received runner-up awards of $1,000 each. The runners-up were Simon Hodge and Gracie Tetzlaff.

All four recipients were honoured at an awards luncheon in the Sport Alliance building on August 18. Congratulations to these student-athletes for receiving this award.

Rob Jackson graduated from Centennial Collegiate in Guelph, Ontario with a 94 per cent average and as president of the student council. He qualified in OFSAA Cross Country in each of his high school years, finishing in fourth place his final year. He also qualified in OFSAA Track & Field for the 800 and 1500 metre events throughout his high school career, and was always within the top six positions. He has represented Canada twice in international competition and is currently ranked 19th by the IAAF for world youth in the 1500 metres.

He has dreams of representing Canada in the next Olympic Games. He will be continuing his competition at Guelph University while he pursues an arts degree.

Katie Anderson graduated from Grade 12 with an 83 per cent average at South Huron District High School in Exeter, and has an outstanding running performance record. She set the Huron Perth all-time record in the senior girls’ 800 metres last spring, and her senior girls’ OFSAA results include sixth in Cross Country, fourth in 1500 metres and second in 3000 metres.

Prior to Katie, her high school was not represented in OFSAA in over 10 years. Katie will be attending McMaster University in the fall for medical radiation.

Simon Hodge is a graduate of Runnymede Collegiate in Toronto, where he finished with a 92 per cent average. He competed in both OFSAA Track & Field and Cross Country every year throughout high school with

impressive results. Simon was active in the student council as a class representative, vice-president, president, and also a member of the athletic council.

Simon also represented his school in the swim and badminton teams, and has a unique gift of being able to juggle while jogging, which he calls ‘joggling’. Simon will be pursing environmental engineering at the University of Western Ontario.

Gracie Tetzlaff graduated from East Northumberland Secondary School in Trenton with a 93 per cent average. She represented her school at OFSAA in all her high school years, and made high rankings in OFSAA Track & Field and Cross Country in her midget and junior years.

She was also on the Quinte West Rep Soccer Team, and competed for her high school team in volleyball. Gracie is attending Laurentian University to pursue a bachelor of commerce degree in sports administration.

The Brian Maxwell Memorial Scholarship recipients are seen here with Jennifer Maxwell, Brian’s wife, as they accept their awards. From left: Simon Hodge, Jennifer Maxwell, Rob Jackson, Gracie Tetzlaff, and Katie Anderson.

OFSAA Celebrates 60 Years

1948 - 2008As OFSAA celebrates its 60th year, we can look back and reflect on the tremendous progress of school sport over this time.

As the number of high school provincial championships increased from six in 1948 to 52 in 2008, more opportunities were available for student-athletes to participate, more teachers volunteered their time to coach, and schools of all sizes competed on a more equitable playing field.

Looking to the future, we can only hope that school sport and the life values it teaches, will continue to flourish.

The Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines have just undergone an entire review.

Since 1999, there have been a number of yearly revisions/updates: upward of 30 new pages have been added and numerous revisions have addressed changes in equipment and regulations.

This latest revision will ensure all educators in Ontario are using the most recent, up-to-date version of the documents.

Even though a teacher/coach/supervisor/administrator is familiar with previous safety practices of an activity, it is paramount for the safety of their student-athletes, that they read the entire document and implement the ‘revised’ safety criteria from the generic, activity page and appendices sections of the 2008 revised Safety Guidelines.

What are some highlights of the changes in the Interschool Pages? For elementary only:

Track and Field – wearing of • 5mm spikes is allowed

For elementary and secondary: Higher risk activities – change • to one of the coaching requirements: experience as a player or coach in that sport in the last 10 years

Basketball – portable basketball • systems described

Ice Hockey – prior to first game • multiple practices on ice must have occurred

Website: New software The Safety Services Package is the package that school boards purchase in order to have access to the Safety Guidelines and their associated services. The package includes ‘Ask an Expert’ consultation, searchable

FAQ database, new/revised pages, news and research feed, request a new/revised page and safety workshops.

The revised documents are now available in a new, interactive website which allows users to search for specifics within the complete document, browse the documents and view single pages.

How to access the Safety Services Package When school boards purchase the Safety Services Package they are provided with the password into the website. This password is provided to the school board’s Safety Guidelines or H&PE contact who has been identified to Ophea. A list of these contacts can be found on www.ophea.net/boardcontacts.

Educators must obtain the password from their school board contact. Ophea will not give it out.

Some school boards may modify the Safety Guidelines, that is, they may raise some of the standards. It is wise to check with your school board contact as to whether your board has done this, and, where they house their version of the Guidelines.

Access for Associate MembersDue to the increasing demand for the Safety Guidelines from groups other than Ontario School Boards, the Safety Guidelines are now available for purchase either as a complete set or individual modules.

This may be of interest to;

Activity providers e.g. climbing, gymnastics, day • camps, outdoor education centersEducational institutions such as private schools • University/college libraries (as reference documents • only) Law firms • Municipal recreation centers •

This may assist school boards and schools with their planning and selection of outside activity providers.

For more information on the Safety Guidelines, visit http://ophea.net/safety.cfm.

Teachers with a physical education or combined kinesiology and education degree can accelerate their coaching development in just one day through the Coaches Association of Ontario.

Typically, coaches would have to complete 26 hours of workshop over four days to complete Part A and B of the training program. The Accelerated Physical Education Teacher-Coach Workshop is approximately 7.5 hours of workshop and the same accreditation will be granted.

Teacher-Coaches will receive: a full set of NCCP Competition-Introduction Manuals; training by a certified Ontario Learning Facilitator who is familiar with the school sports system as a teacher, coach and/or administrator; accreditation in the NCCP national database upon completion, and save time and money.

Delivered by a qualified NCCP Learning Facilitator, the workshop focuses on coaching and developing student-athletes. Participants will explore and share ideas on developing basic sport skills and athletic abilities, creating a fun and safe environment, and preparing student-athletes for local and/or regional competition.

Visit www.coachesontario.ca/calendar for course locations, times, and registration information.

OFSAA Boys’ BaseballQualification Tournaments Whitby/Sarnia June 4 - 5, 2008

Championship Toronto June 12, 2008The OFSAA Baseball Championship saw 16 teams from across Ontario compete in the regional preliminary elimination tournaments, held in Sarnia and Whitby. Two teams from each of the regional tournaments qualified to advance to the OFSAA championship finals, which were held at the Roger’s Centre.

Pickering HS and John F. Ross qualified for the championship finals from the west regional tournament, while Sinclair SS and Burlington Notre Dame qualified for the championship finals from the east regional tournament.

The gold medal game at the Rogers Centre was one of the most exciting games ever seen in OFSAA championship competition. The game featured outstanding pitching and great defense, and ended in a 1-1 tie after the regulation seven innings.

Using the international tie breaker rule, each team got to place a runner at second base with no outs, and attempt to score. Pickering managed to score three runs in its half inning, putting the pressure on Notre Dame. Notre Dame battled to even up the score. With two outs and the bases

loaded, the next batter was hit by a pitch, forcing in the winning run. Final score was 5 - 4 Notre Dame.

The Prentice Cup, emblematic of the high school baseball championships, was presented to Notre Dame at a Blue Jays game the following week.

Huge thank you’s to Geoff Whent and Tim Parizeau, the convenors of the two regional tournaments, for doing such a great job organizing them.

Also a big thank you to the Toronto Blue Jays for hosting this OFSAA championship event.

OFSAA’s Coaching in Ontario Schools (CIOS)Developed by OFSAA in 2002, Coaching in Ontario Schools is a program for secondary school sport coaches in Ontario.

CIOS gives teacher-coaches and community volunteers the skills they need to coach effectively in the secondary school environment. The seven-hour course combines information needed by coaches of beginner to intermediate athletics (introductory NCCP theory info) with what they specifically need to work with student-athletes. This includes OFSAA rules, how to work with school and Board administrators, provincial safety guidelines, and more.

Additional resources include Ophea Provincial Safety Guidelines.

For a low cost of $50 per participant, all participants will receive a workbook in advance of the course and a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the course.

Please contact Brian Riddell, OFSAA’s Assistant Director (interim) to find a Coaching in Ontario Schools course near you: [email protected] or (416) 426-7440.

For more information on the program, visit www.ofsaa.on.ca.

CIOS is undergoing a revision process which will take the Coaching in Ontario Schools course online! This hybrid learning environment is foreseen to comprise a website education package and a culminating three and a half hour in-class clinic with a trained learning facilitator.

OFSAA’s Coaching Committee has a sub-committee which has revised the current course into a package of learning outcomes and core content which reflects the needs of today’s volunteer OFSAA teacher-coaches.

The Coaching Committee invites all OFSAA members who have experience in curriculum writing and course development to contact the OFSAA office to indicate interest in joining the CIOS Writing Team.

It is hoped that the initial formation of this group will occur in the fall of 2008, with writing to commence in January 2009.

If interested, please contact Brian Riddell at the OFSAA office at (416) 426-7440.

A pre-championship rain storm could not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants or host committee from Thunder Bay. Heavy rains created unplayable conditions at three of the scheduled fields and forced the convenors into finding alternate sites. Despite this, the host committee did a marvelous job of juggling things with the cooperation of the coaches and players, and successful championship was concluded as planned.

In the end, the talented hometown hosts from St. Igantius HS captured the gold medal after defeating a disciplined and well-coached Bishop Tonnos CHS team by a close 1-0 score in the final.

Congratulations to St. Ignatius team members Atilio

Coaches were Pino Tassone, Frank Carpino, Frank Ianni, and John Ianni (pictured above).

OFSAA thanks convenors Tony Colistro, Dave Pineau, and Frank Carpino for organizing a great championship and providing a northern experience for the players and

coaches.

Bishop Tonnos CHS, coached by Edwin Suva and Marcus Faggion, were selected for the Team Sportsmanship Award. The Bishop Tonnos players and coaches displayed class right through the tournament including the championship game. Well done!

We also acknowledge Pino Tassone of St. Ignatius HS (NWOSSAA) as recipient of the Leadership in School Sport Award. Pino is principal of St. Ignatius, coach of the soccer team, and a big supporter of athletics. Congratulations Pino on this deserving recognition.

Ideal weather conditions at the Rexall Centre in Toronto on day one of the Tennis Festival gave way to rainy conditions and indoor courts on day two. Coaches and athletes showed great patience as scheduled matches had to be re-arranged due to weather. Hopefully the weather is more agreeable next year when tennis moves to level 1 championship status.

Our thanks to convenors Michael Robinson, Liz Ochotta, Dave Hawkins, Tami Hawkins, Mary-Jane Robinson,

and the rest of their organizing committee who made the festival a success despite the rain on day two. OFSAA also thanks Ontario Tennis Association (OTA) members David Lea and Jim Boyce for their sponsorship and assistance to the Tennis Festival once again.

Along with excellent caliber of tennis played, another highlight of the festival was the coaches’ clinic put on by

the OTA on Sunday during registration.

OFSAA Track & FieldHamilton June 5 - 7, 2008The 2008 OFSAA Track and Field Championships were held at the new track facilities at the Mohawk Sports Complex in Hamilton. The South Region (GHAC, ROPSSAA and SOSSA) were the gracious hosts for this prestigious event. The championships were a tremendous success, with the new track at Mohawk and great weather. Congratulations to all athletes who continually raised the bar with their performances over the three days. Spectators were treated to some sparkling finishes, many new records in track events, and great achievements in the field events.

Congratulations to convenor Dan Clarke (Sir Alan MacNab) for convening the championship, and the entire organizing committee for their hard work in ensuring the success.

Dan Clarke and Helen Downey (Bishop Tonus CSS) were the recipients of the OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award for their outstanding contribution to high school sport.

We look forward to the 2009 OFSAA Track & FIeld Championships, which will be hosted by Metro Region at Etobicoke Centennial Stadium in Toronto June.
