A WORD FROM THE OUTGOING CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Blue Metropolis’ 20th anniversary was celebrated with flair! Foremost in my memory is the special award that was presented to Charles Taylor, the great philosopher, thinker and author, whom we had the pleasure of seeing onstage on several occasions during the 2018 Festival. A number of achievements – both artistic and financial – are worth highlighting:

• Elimination of the deficit and creation of a budgetary reserve fund

• Creation of new regional initiatives allowing for an increase in Festival attendance

• A major Professionals Day, featuring 12 programmers from some of the worlds’ major literary festivals

After 10 years as chair of the board of directors of Blue Metropolis Foundation, I feel a certain sadness as I announce my departure, but also a sense of accomplishment. I had the opportunity to witness major changes, of both an artistic and organizational nature, which contributed to making Blue Metropolis a major cultural and social institution. I am pleased to announce that, as of November 5, Hubert T. Lacroix will take over as chair of the board of directors.

My colleagues on the board of directors join me in thanking our financial partners, from both the public and private sectors, as well as our many donors, in particular those who faithfully attend our benefit events. You have been part of this wonderful evolution and I sincerely hope that you will continue to support us.

Of course, I never could have held this position for 10 years without the supportive assistance, leadership qualities, generosity and innovative spirit of William, who knows how to inspire her team and actively promote Blue Metropolis beyond all expectations. William, thank you.

Long live Blue Metropolis!

Cameron Charlebois

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT-GENERAL MANAGER AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

More than 120,0001 lovers of literature took part in the 20th edition of Blue Metropolis International Literary FestivalA festival is above all a collective effort. Thanks to extraordinary teamwork and a number of partnerships with organizations within the community, attendance at Blue Metropolis continues to grow. The 2018 TD-Blue Metropolis Children’s Festival, with some 120 events for children ages 12 and under, including seven special exhibitions celebrating the Festival’s 11th anniversary, received 80,000 visits. I would like to thank Ivan Fillion, director of Bibliothèques de Montréal, and his entire team for their unprecedented collaboration.

As Cameron comes to the end of his 10-year term as chair of the board, I would like to acknowledge his exceptional contribution to the governance of Blue Met. He has been a mentor, a devoted donor and an inspiring leader, but most of all, he has been a friend…

William St-Hilaire1Overall direct and indirect attendance, including visitors to Blue Metropolis Festival (adult and children’s programming) and to our affiliated partners’ exhibitions and activities.

A WORD FROM THE INCOMING PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Everything about Blue Metropolis is inspiring! Its international literary festival that continues to expand our horizons and allow us to travel thanks to the power of the imagination; its hands-on educational and social programs that take place in the community, supporting those who are the most vulnerable and disadvantaged; its delightful programming for children and families, which offers author meet-and-greets as well as activities related to building self esteem and the on-going struggles against bullying and prejudice. As the parent of young children, as a citizen, and during my time as chairman of CBC, I have had the opportunity to observe this small organization that has big ambitions and an international approach. I am delighted to join this enthusiastic team and look forward to experiencing the 2019 Festival at much closer range, along with my new colleagues on the Board of Directors, following the excellent work carried out by Cameron Charlebois!

First and foremost, the presentation of the Blue Metropolis Grand Prix to philosopher Charles Taylor. The award ceremony featured a riveting conversation with journalist Michel Desautels, which was broadcast on Radio-Canada’s Première Chaîne. Also on Saturday, April 28, in the evening, Charles Taylor and French philosopher Pascal Bruckner spoke with Quebec philosopher Georges Leroux about the current state of the world.

Other very popular events included those devoted to Nordic literature, featuring various authors, literary genres and contrasting worlds: Ragnar Jónasson (Iceland), Ulrikka S. Gernes (Denmark), Torkil Damhaug (Norway), Jonas Hassen Khemiri (Sweden), Viveca Sten (Sweden) and Morten Strøksnes (Norway).

French literature was well represented by Philippe Jaenada (La Serpe, prix Femina 2017), Lola Lafon, Chantal Thomas and Jean-Baptiste Andrea (winner of the Festival de Chambéry’s first novel prize).

In other international names, high profile American writer Daniel Mendelsohn; India’s Vikas Swarup, author of the novel Q&A, also known as Slumdog Millionaire, which was the inspiration for the award-winning movie, and who is also his country’s High Commissioner to Canada; Palestinian–Israeli author Sayed Kashua and Israel’s Ayelet Gundar-Goshen. Canadian names included highly successful mystery writer Louise Penny, the ever-popular Adam Gopnik and Inuit author Zebedee Nungak. Blue Met’s literary prizes featured Lebanese author Charif Majdalani (Words to Change Prize), Argentina’s Leila Guerriero (Azul Prize), Canadian Lee Maracle (First Peoples Prize), Quebec’s Nicole Brossard (LGBTQ Violet Prize) and Alina Dumitrescu, a Montrealer of Roumanian origin (Blue Metropolis Diversity /Conseil des arts de Montréal Prize).

A new featureA new event for Blue Met, Professionals Day, took place on Friday, April 27, offering a substantial program and bringing together a number of professionals, 12 of them from abroad, from the literary world (publishers, translators, literary agents, journalists, and programmers from international festivals). With a focus on practical issues, the roundtable discussions offered participants an opportunity to reflect on current practice in the field. This event confirmed the Festival’s increasing role as a vital hub on the Canadian literary scene.

Vibrant and exciting benefit events! Independent revenues as well as those from private funding make up 44% of Blue Met’s total budget. Thanks to the creative talents of Matt Zimbel and Lyne Tremblay, we once again succeeded in filling our venues with patrons from many walks of life who are dedicated to academic perseverance and combatting prejudice, as well as to literature. Thanks to all the participants and volunteers who helped make these activities a resounding success.

THE TD-BLUE METROPOLIS CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL:OVERVIEW OF AN INSPIRING 11th EDITION!Once again this year, the 2018 edition presented a wide range of activities, events and exhibitions in 81 different venues (schools, libraries, cultural centres, preschools, children’s hospitals and specialized schools) in Montreal, Laval, on the North Shore and the South Shore. In all, children and their families had the opportunity to take part in one of 123 free activities, not to mention the numerous exhibitions presented in various public libraries. In addition, storytime activities on the topic of self-esteem took place in 92 daycare and child care centres as part of the Journée CPE garderie. The festival featured several other “firsts”, in particular our very first literary brunch for LGBTQ families.

THE 11th EDITION’S EXHIBITIONS Seven exhibitions were presented as part of the TD-Blue Metropolis Children’s Festival, reaching over 56,000 people. These exhibitions were on display at a number of municipal libraries and at HOTEL10.

A FESTIVAL THAT’S GROWINGOver the last two years, the TD-Blue Metropolis Children’s Festival has expanded its reach in so many ways. First, with the Journée CPE & garderies, which aims to increase self-esteem and encourages the participation of all preschools throughout Quebec. In fact, two preschools, one located in Sainte-Catherine and one in Léry, won the contest connected to the Journée. In addition, as part of an intercultural exchange, we presented a show by young artists from Shawinigan, under the direction of author David Gaudreault, at the Maison de la culture Frontenac. This year, a number of authors from various regions of Quebec were invited to facilitate meet-and-greets with school groups in Montreal: Andrée Poulin from Gatineau, Stéphanie Gervais from Saguenay, Philippe Beha from Acton Vale and Étienne Poirier from Trois-Rivières. In addition, Edith Bourget, from Acadie, participated in the Festival as part of an exchange with Moncton’s Frye Festival. Finally, the series titled Le fleuve et moi took the Festival to the shores of the St. Lawrence River, in Contrecoeur, Verchères and Sorel-Tracy.

“ At TD, we believe in the positive impact reading has on fostering a child’s development and education. Bringing young people together with captivating books, as well as talented authors and illustrators, is one way for us to give back to the community. “

2017-2018 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL PROGRAMS Since its inception, Blue Metropolis has developed 51 educational and social programs, both online and in the classroom, reaching more than 18,300 young people and teachers across the country and in both official languages.

In addition to events at the Children’s Festival, Blue Metropolis 2018 presented a range of programs that aim to develop a love of reading and writing, encourage social inclusion, diversity and academic perseverance and combat poverty. This year, the Foundation’s educational programs reached 311 students in Montreal, Joliette, Sherbrooke, Vaudreuil and Nunavik, as well as in Winnipeg and Vancouver.

Quebec Roots: Strengthening Communities, The Place I Want to Be Guided by an author and a professional

photographer, students at schools in Montreal,

Vaudreuil and Nunavik created, over a period

of several weeks, an anthology of writing and

photography that presents their community. In

June, the book was distributed to all participants

at launches that took place in each location.

Rhythm & WordsThis original project promoting bilingualism,

was held at Lindsay Place High School. Under

the guidance of Gabrielle Godon and Emma

Berger-Kovaks, who form the duo Heartstreets,

the students wrote a hip-hop song in a mix of

English and French, which they then produced as

a videoclip, with the help of videographer Camille

Trudeau-Rivest. The clip that had the most views

online won a $1,000 prize.

Saine révolte/Healty Rebellion On the topic of rebellion, Secondary 5 students

at schools in Joliette, Sherbrooke and Montreal

took part in a series of workshops guided by

francophone and anglophone facilitators. At

the end of these meetings, the three schools

presented bilingual cabaret-style shows that were

created and produced by the students.

Projet M For its third edition, Projet M took place in two

Montreal primary schools: École Iona in Côte

des Neiges and École Saint-Donat in Mercier.

Grade 6 students explored the topic of positive

body image, guided by facilitator Tania Baladi.

The result, which took the form of a mural, was

exhibited last May at the Langelier and Côte-des-

Neiges public libraries.

Mes racines/My Roots Guided by authors and photographers,

students and adults who are new Canadians

took part in writing and photography

workshops in Montreal, Winnipeg and

Vancouver. Their writing, which deals

with their experience of immigration and

integration, has been published on our

website and in an anthology, a copy of which

was given to each participant.
