Art Journaling WorkshopsMuch like a word journal, in which the writer tells their story, makes plans, expresses human emotion; joy, pain, Love or Sorrow, an Art Journal does the same except instead of using words as the primary method of expression, art is used. Beginners will relax into the “no judgment” approach, and seasoned artists will find space to allow looseness in their work. For all, Art Journaling taps into that inner child who loves the freedom of expression that drawing and painting and mucking around will give. In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn new mediums (or play with ones you know in a different way), some basic art tools and techniques. We will explore mixed medium, composition and colour, challenge the rules a little and enjoy the company of other art enthusiasts. Tea and light refreshments at break.

Instructor: Margot Soltice Dates: Saturdays, Jan. 12 &/or Feb. 2 &/or Mar. 9Fees: $55.00 - Fee includes use of mediums and materials supplied by instructor. Antiquing With PaintThrough the use of paint, stain and other mediums, we will achieve varied antique looks on your own furniture or accessory pieces (they should be in good repair but not necessarily nicely finished). Course fee includes a pre-meet or phone call with instructor to determine the suitability and colour choices for your project. There will be time to work on a medium-sized, or a number of smaller pieces. Note: This class will not involve any stripping, which is not necessary in most cases depending on what you want to do with your piece.

Instructor: Terry Demoline Date and Time: Sat. TBA 10 am - 4 pm Friday (day before) 5 pm to 7 pm furniture drop-off at Centre, pre-arranged with Terry. Fees: $80.00 (new, lower registration fee) Pay instructor $60 for 1 litre of paint and stain used in class (up to 1/2 pint), sandpaper and brushes. Student supplies: Supply and equipment list will be mailed/e-mailed to each student. Bring a bag lunch.

Revitalizing Your Wood Cabinets Kitchen and bathroom cabinets seen better days? Bones still good - lustre and colour wearing off? Rejuvenate your cabinets without stripping and a lot of muscle and time. Add new life to your existing cabinets. Bring the worst of your doors and drawers - cabinet drawers, of course - and we will work hands-on to discover the best stain colour and type to refresh them before applying a new clear coat. Easy to do once you know the steps. Note: This course is not about making drastic colour changes, although we will cover ways that could be done. We will determine stain colours and finishes specific to each person’s problems and wood type. The student will leave armed with the product and procedure knowledge to refurbish their cabinets.

Instructor: Terry Demoline Date and Time: Saturday, Jan. 19 10:00 am -1:00 pmFees: $40 - Includes Brushes and sandpaper provided by instructor. Student brings doors and drawers, rubber gloves and rags.

“The Importance of Being Earnest”

Written by Oscar Wilde in 1895, “The Importance of Being Earnest” is a classic comedy and satire on Victorian society. It’s the story of two young men, one living in the city of London, the other in the country. Both men fall in love with, and propose to, women whose ideal is to marry someone of the name of Ernest, “because that is the only name that one can really trust”. A Wagnerian mother, an absent minded tutor, an obtuse clergyman, and two butlers complete the cast.

Entertainment and Past Times ~ 1890 - 1940Temporary Exhibit ~ Spring 2012 - Autumn 2013What passed for entertainment in the days before television, video games, and DVDs in Wetaskiwin? See how social life and entertainment were inseparable. It was a social occasion to meet friends and neighbours at the latest travelling show, wrestling match, community supper or dance – to name only a few activities at these popular venues. See the varied community social events from ‘Box Socials’, choirs, festivals, including the frequent Chautauquas, and the rise of dance schools run by accomplished local performers. In the small city of Wetaskiwin, see how you really did know everyone because seeing your neighbour about town was a normal part of community life.
