2013 Roster Season OutlookThe Westminster College volleyball team

brings experience in 2013 as it returns 10 letterwinners, including six seniors who have competed every year since they arrived as newcomers.

Four of the five All-PAC honorees from a season ago return for the Titans, including seniors Megan Romocean, Lexi Starheim, Rebecca Riemer, and Katie Palkovic.

“I am looking for all four to step up a great deal this year, said veteran head coach Tammy Swearingen.“ “Megan, Lexi, and Rebecca have the ability to do very well both defensively and offensively. They will be huge at the net and all three will be a main part of the offense. Katie will be looking to run the offense again as she did a great job last year and gained a great deal of confidence in doing so. If these four play to their ability, it will be a good season for the Titans. However, we have to play as a team. No one player will win it. It will take all of the Titan squad.”

Romocean ranked sixth in the league averaging 2.78 kills per set and was fifth

in service aces per set with 0.44. Romocean was also fifth in the PAC with an average of 3.36 points per set. For Westminster, Romocean ranked first on the team in kills (325) and aces (51). Starheim tied fourth in the PAC with .98 blocks per set. Starheim’s 118 total blocks ranked second in the league, while her hitting percentage of .267 stood eighth-best. Riemer ranked third in the conference with a .313 hitting percentage. Riemer was also second on the team with 253 kills and third with 88 blocks. Palkovic, a one-year starter, was third in the PAC averaging 10.36 assists per set. Her 1,129 total assists stood second-best in the conference.

The Titans are loaded with returning players vying for starting and playing time this year. Returning letter winners Julie Powell and Megan Prybyl will be fighting for starting time on the outside. Kassie Freyermuth, who started on the right side the past two years, will be competing with Alaura Hanssen and Hayley Turner. On the defensive side, Claire Ferrando and Chrissy Volsko bring a wealth of experience and energy to the Titan line-up along with Erin Kennedy, Kelsey Kilbane and Tiffany Jackson.

Newcomers Katie Peters, Megan Little, Katie Pricener, Nicole Luklan, and Lauren Slater are all athletic and can vie for playing time.

“There will be a great deal of competition for playing time this year, maybe the most internal competition that we have ever had,” Swearingen said. “It will take a team to be successful, not just one or two players. We are much deeper this year and can expect to see many contribute.”

The Titans made a significant stride in 2012 as they finished 22-11 overall, which was the most wins since 2008; the same year that Westminster last won the PAC Championship.

“There are many contenders for the conference title, Swearingen said. “I expect more than a few teams to be strong again this year. Every match will be extremely important. We are definitely aiming to regain the PAC Title. We will need to improve our ball control from last season and work harder defensively.”

Jim DaflerDirector of Athletics

Jim Dafler enters his 15th year as di-rector of athletics at Westminster College in 2013-14. Dafler was selected as the chair-man of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basket-ball Committee for the 2008-09 season, the final year of a four-year term as a commit-

tee member. Dafler was Westminster’s head men’s basketball coach from 1998-2003 after spending nine years as an assistant coach. He was also the Titans’ track and field coach for nine years. A 1971 graduate of Capital University, Dafler earned his master’s from Ohio University.

Dr. Richard H. DormanCollege President

Dr. Richard H. Dorman took office as the 14th President of Westminster Col-lege in 2008. President Dorman previously served as vice president for institutional advancement at Otterbein College since 1996. He served as assistant vice presi-

dent for development (1994-96) and director of health sciences development at the University of Louisville (1990-94) following four years as an executive with the Penn State Alumni Association. A 1975 graduate of Susquehanna University, Dorman earned his master’s and his doctorate from Penn State University.

Towering Titan OrganizationProviding support for Westminster’s athletic programs is the

Towering Titan Organization (TTO), formed in 1976 around a core of devoted, loyal and intensely interested alumni, parents and friends. The organization purposes itself to help maintain, improve and endow Westminster College’s athletic programs.

Over $3 million in gifts have been contributed to the Towering Titan Fund since its inception.

The annual income is distributed in this manner: 90 percent of all donations go directly to the sport(s) chosen (donations can be designat-ed to a specific sport for men or women), with 10 percent going towards the operation and promotion of the fund. All 20 varsity sports for men and women benefit from the fund.

A minimum gift of $30 qualifies a donor for membership. Members receive a membership card, issues of the Towering Titan Newsletter and invitations to social events such as golf outings each July, and recogni-tion dinners and ceremonies that are scheduled periodically. Qualifying gifts are also recognized through membership in Westminster’s Giving Clubs. For more information or to join the Towering Titans, contact Westminster Director of Athletics Jim Dafler at (724) 946-7313.

Westminster College has a proud athletics heri-tage that is steeped with

a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a sportswriter for the student news-paper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westmin-ster joined the NCAA in 1998.

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Confer-ence continues

its mission of promoting intercollegiate athlet-ics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Vir-ginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercol-legiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s phi-losophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champi-ons in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
