The 2011 Westminster women’s volleyball team will look to build off a season in 2010 that saw the program headed back towards the top of the Frontier Conference. The Griffins finished 12-13 overall last year and were fourth in the Frontier Conference at 7-7 despite starting a freshman in four positions.
All of those players return this year with experience that can’t be mea-sured. Mix in that group of youngsters with four seniors and juniors and this season could see the team take the next step towards a confer-ence title.
OUTSIDE HITTERSThe outside hitter position could be the deepest on the team. There are no clear-cut favorites to start on the outside from day one, but the experience the group has makes them all interchangeable. Becky Burke, Jenna Harp, Ashley Marchant, Kenzie Mitchell and Katy Waldie are all in the mix for spots on the outside.
Marchant has the most experience as a starting outside hitter at West-minster. She was leading the team with 132 kills and an average of 3.14 per set before an injury took away her freshman season in 2009. Last season, she started slow still recovering from the injury and finished with just 90 kills in 25 matches.
Harp finished last season strong, posting 20 kills and 35 digs during the two matches at the conference tournament. Burke hit .131 last sea-son with 43 kills and Waldie played primarily as a defensive specialist after returning from a back injury. Mitchell spent most of her freshman season on the right side and looks like a candidate for that spot again this year.
MIDDLE BLOCKERSAnother position that features some depth this season for the Griffins is middle blocker. They return both starters from last season along with the first reserve at the position. In the offseason, they added two talented freshmen to the mix.
Stephanie Jones Morin led the team with a .275 hitting efficiency on 2010 while recording 175 kills and 62 blocks. Katie Vance posted a
team-high 65 blocks with 85 kills and a .159 hitting efficiency.Andrea Christensen appeared in 17 matches during her freshman sea-son with four kills and three blocks. Freshman Alexis Aalona comes in after starting for three seasons in high school and being named second team all-state as a senior. Morgan Hirschel is the other freshman that will compete for time in the middle.
SETTERSThe setter position is anchored by sophomore Emily Atkinson. During her freshman campaign, Atkinson was third in the Frontier in assists at 8.9 per set. She was named to the conference all-freshman team and her 823 assists rank third for a season in school history.
Freshmen Alexis Isbell and Leau Quiocho will compete for time as the back-up to Atkinson. Isbell was all-region as a senior in high school and the lefty could also get some time as a right side hitter. Quiocho is just 5-foot-5, but had an excellent prep career and is strong defensively.
LIBEROSThe libero position is another spot that is locked down by a sophomore. Kyndall Kordakis was named to the Frontier all-freshman team after posting 392 digs during her inaugural campaign. Her 4.2 digs per set was third in the conference and she posted the fifth-best total in school history with 392 digs.
With no other liberos on the roster, look for Burke, Harp, Marchant and Waldie compete for time as a back-up to Kordakis. Waldie has the most experience as a defensive specialist having spent much of last season in that same role. Burke and Marchant have also seen some time playing as a defensive specialist during their careers.
SCHEDULEThe schedule features seven teams that qualified for the 2010 NAIA Na-tional Championships along with four matches against teams from the Golden State Athletic Conference. The team opens with the Bison Blast in Shawnee, Okla. and the Asics/Crowne Plaza Labor Day Tournament in Irvine, Calif. The non-conference slate also features a home-and-home with the College of Idaho and a home match with NCAA DII foe Mesa State.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW
2011 Westminster Women’s Volleyball
Kim Norman begins year eight as the head coach of the Westminster women’s volleyball program. During her time at the helm, Westminster has compiled a 107-101 record making Norman the most successful coach in school history.
Under the direction of Norman, Westminster has posted three winning seasons with two 20-win years. The team won the Frontier Conference championship in both 2005 and 2006. They qualified for the NAIA National Championships for the first time in 2007.
The Griffins have had 17 All-Frontier Conference performers, including two conference players of the year. Norman was the 2005 Frontier Conference coach of the year. Westminster has also had nine NAIA Scholar Athletes and 54 Academic All-Frontier Conference performers in the seven years with Norman as head coach.
When Norman took over the team in 2004, they were coming off a 1-32 season. The first season under Norman they went 14-14, the first non-losing season in school history. That season was followed up with a 16-13 season and a Frontier Conference Tournament championship. The 2006 season saw another school first–a 20-win season. They finished 22-12 and claimed a share of the Frontier Conference regular season title and again won the conference tournament.
The 2007 season was the best in school history. Norman guided the team to a 25-12 overall record and they qualified for the NAIA National Tournament for the first time ever.
Norman began her college coaching career at Utah State University in 1987, where she coached and earned an MS in physical education. After one season as second assistant coach for the USU women’s volleyball team, Norman took over the USU collegiate men’s program as their head coach from 1988–1991. Her concern that volleyball athletes were being recruited only from Southern California led her to start an arm of USA Volleyball now called the Intermountain Volleyball Association. As founder and CEO since its inception in 1990, Norman is responsible for making Utah one of the nation’s powerhouses in the Junior Olympic Volleyball Club world.
This past summer, Norman spent time with Dr. Carl McGowan in Switzerland working with the Swiss National Team.

She is also the founder of the High Country Volleyball Club where her responsibilities include Director of Coaching and Athlete Development. Teams coached by Norman have qualified for the USAV Junior Olympics several times with a best finish of second.
As Head Coach of Highland High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, Norman compiled a 296-92 record over twelve seasons. Under her coaching, the Rams made it to every state championship tournament from 1992–2003 and won the Utah High School State Championship in 1996 and 1997. Those teams were led by notable Olympian Logan Tom.
In 1994, she worked in various coaching and administrative capacities with USA Volleyball, including assisting the Women’s Junior National team. In 1996, Norman and University of Utah head coach Beth Launiere started the USA Volleyball Intermountain High Performance Program, a program that has been touted as the best Olympic Development Program in the USA Volleyball system. In December 2003, the United States Olympic Committee gave Utah and Intermountain Volleyball Association the only Community Olympic Development Program designation for volleyball in the United States.
Through her involvement with USA Volleyball, Norman has coached and represented the United States and Utah in several foreign countries. In the summer of 2008, Norman led a group who traveled to Brazil and competed against some of the top competition in the world. Norman’s life is volleyball, and her passion for the game is why she has taken Westminster to the success it has achieved.

Since moving to Utah in 2008 Monroy has become a top instructor in the Intermountain Region and was asked to lead a team this summer to USA High Performance Championships in Tucson, Ariz. Monroy also trained and led beach teams to compete in the USA High Performance Beach Championships at Long Beach in 2010. As a full time coach Monroy loves being in the gym as much as his players do. Between camps, clinics, private lessons, club, USA activities, and the collegiate season Monroy is relentless in advancing his knowledge and passion for the game.
Monroy was a member of the Messiah College men’s volleyball squad from 2005-2008. He earned first team honors in the Mid-Atlantic Conference as an outside hitter before shifting focus to libero in his final two seasons. Monroy’s four years at Messiah remain the most successful squads in the programs 27 year history with national results of 8th, 5th, 5th, and the DII National Championship in 2008.

2011 Westminster Women’s Volleyball
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is a completely autonomous association currently administering programs of intercollegiate athletics for approximately 330 fully accredited colleges and universities of moderate enrollment.
The fundamental tenet of the NAIA is that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the total educational program of the institution. This belief is strongly reflected in the governing documents, activities and organizational structure of the Association.
Established in 1940 as the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB), the Association expanded to include other programs in 1952. The NAIA became the first intercollegiate sports governing body to provide championship opportunities for both men andwomen when the women’s program was established on August 1, 1980.
The purpose of the NAIA is to promote education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and the principle that athletes serve as an integral part of education.
The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conference and regional structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.
The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.
Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.
The Frontier Conference was organized in 1935 with four of the eight existing colleges as charter members. Carroll College joined in 1938. For a 10-year period, from 1974 to 1984, the College of Great Falls, now the University of Great Falls competed in the conference. Great Falls rejoined the Frontier in 1999-2000. For a short time, MSU-Billings (then Eastern Montana College) was a member of the league.
New members in 1998-99 were Lewis-Clark State College of Lewiston, Idaho and Westminster College of Salt Lake City, Utah. Dickinson State was approved for membership starting with the 2012-13 season while Southern Oregon will join as a football member at the same time.
The conference now consists of Carroll College, Dickinson State College, Eastern Oregon University (football only), University of Great Falls, Lewis-Clark State College, Montana State University-Northern, Montana Tech, University of Montana Western, Rocky Mountain College, Southern Oregon University (football only) and Westminster College.
The purpose of the Frontier Conference is to encourage, promote, sponsor and control athletic competition among participating colleges as an integral part of the total educational process. With their motto, “The Best in academics and athletics,” members compete for conference championships in football, basketball, golf, volleyball, soccer, and cross country.

2011 Westminster Women’s Volleyball24
The 2010 Westminster women’s volleyball team seemed to get the program headed back in the right direction. Westminster finished at 12-13 overall and was 7-7 in Frontier Conference play. They also advanced past the opening round of the conference tournament for the first time since 2007.
Westminster opened the season with two wins at the Tournament of Champions, including a 3-2 victory over No. 16 College of Idaho during pool play. Then after four consecutive losses to teams ranked in the top 16, Westminster snapped the streak with a 3-0 sweep of No. 6 Biola at the Asics/Crown Plaza Labor Day Tournament.
Conference play began with road losses at Carroll and Rocky Mountain. That was followed by a four-match winning streak to climb to 4-2 in the Frontier through the end of September. The Griffins then dropped four straight matches with three coming against nationally ranked opponents. They went 4-3 down the stretch including a win over Montana Tech in the quarterfinals of the Frontier Conference Tournament.
The 12 wins were the most for the Griffins since 2007 when they won 25. At 7-7 in the Frontier, Westminster finished at .500 or better in conference for the fifth time in the last seven years. They also posted a winning record at home for the fifth consecutive season.

It’s your heart. The engine that
won’t quit. Not here. Not now.
It’s what drives you from the first
moment of the game to the final
screaming second. Because
when you’re an athlete, you live
for play. Student-athletes in NAIA
colleges and universities across
the country play their hearts out
every time they put on their school
colors and step up to compete.
They are part of an
organization that understands an
athlete’s need to dig deep, to bond
and to go beyond. That same
drive is at the heart of the NAIA,
where the sweat never dries, the
turf is still shredded, and the court
is always scuffed with a thousand
sole marks.
Hear that pounding?

In September 2006, Shay Wyatt was hired as Director of Athletics at Westminster College. Under his guidance the intercollegiate athletic program has experienced unprecedented growth and success. Wyatt’s leadership has led to increases in the number of sports offered, enrollment, academic and athletic success, departmental budget, community service efforts amongst student-athletes, fundraising, corporate partners, ticket revenue, attendance at athletic events, coaches and support staff and strategic planning efforts for the Athletics Department.
In addition, Westminster Athletics has experienced facility enhancements, improved eligibility and compliance processes, branding and website technologies, licensing and apparel agreements have been established and a student-athlete advisory committee and student fan group were formed. Wyatt has served on various institutional committees and is a member of the National Administrative Committee of the NAIA which sets policy and procedures for the national organization.
Prior to Westminster College, Wyatt served as Director of Sports Marketing and Bruin Club at Salt Lake Community College in 2006. While only at SLCC for a short period of time, he secured the athletic department’s largest ever corporate sponsorship.
From 2001-2006, Wyatt served as the Wildcat Club Executive Director at Weber State University. He was responsible for the development efforts for the athletics department including annual giving, major gifts, endowments, special events and donor relations. The Wildcat Club experienced an increase in annual giving totals each year Wyatt was at the helm, including a 17% increase in 2004. He was instrumental in securing more than $350,000 in football suites, club seating and basketball preferred seating.
Wyatt made his way to Weber State via Utah Valley State College where he served as the Director of Development for Athletics from 1999-2001. He was responsible for creating the fund raising arm of the athletic department, serving as the first-ever development director at UVSC. In this role he defined all aspects of annual giving and major gift opportunities. Upon his arrival at UVSC he increased annual giving by 30% in his first year. He served as a member of the strategic planning committee, planning the college’s move from NJCAA to NCAA Division I.
From 1995-1998, Wyatt served as the Athletic Events Coordinator at the University of Utah. He was responsible for all aspects of event and facility management. He served as Assistant Tournament Manager for the 1997 NCAA West Region First/Second Rounds Men’s Basketball Tournament. He represented the athletics department as a liaison for

Payne Gymnasium houses the newly renovated Griffins strength and athletic training facilities, auxiliary basketball court, locker rooms, and offices for men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s soccer. Built during the term of President Herbert W. Reherd (1913–1939), it was named after the president of the Board of Trustees and manager of the local J.C. Penney Company; groundbreaking was July 1928 and dedication January 11, 1929.
Though the college worried that it was frivolous to spend money on a gymnasium, the facility, designed by architect Walter E. Ware, provided badly needed recreation for the school and groups in the entire Sugar House area. It was added to and remodeled in 1970 under President Manford Shaw (1968–1976), and has housed the basketball and volleyball programs, dances, speakers, luncheons, career fairs, orientations, and a variety of other cultural and social student events—including being the practice facility for the Utah Jazz from 1979 to May 1999.
BEHNKEN FIELD HOUSE
The Dolores Dore Eccles Heatlh, Wellness and Athletic Center is a three-story, 84,500-square-foot facility, completed in 2006, that houses Griffins Athletics and includes a swimming pool, full complement of fitness equipment, a weight room and exercise studio, and a technically challenging, 46-foot climbing wall. Above a field house that holds 1,200 spectators is a suspended running track with a high-tech surface and corner windows with views. The field house includes an athletic training room, locker rooms, team meeting rooms, coaches offices, and equipment storage space for our popular Griffin intercollegiate sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball.

DUMKE FIELD
Dumke Field, on the site of the Dane Hansen Stadium, was opened October 2, 1949, by college president Robert D. Steele (1939–1952). It was a gift of the George Hansen family in memory of a son and brother, Lt. Dane Hansen, Class of 1940, who lost his life in World War II. Having had seating for 1,200 attendants, the stadium had been the college soccer and activities field, commencement green, and later a paved parking facility. In fall 2005, it was transformed into a parking structure, with an elevated artificial turf athletic field on top. This facility is now the home field for the Griffins men’s and women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse teams.

WESTMINSTER COLLEGEWestminster is a nationally recognized, comprehensive liberal arts college. With a broad array of graduate and undergraduate programs, Westminster is distinguished by its unique environment for learning. Westminster prepares students for success through active and engaged learning, real world experiences, and its vibrant campus community. Westminster’s unique location, adjacent to the Rocky Mountains and to the dynamic city of Salt Lake, further enriches the college experience.
While we’re proud that Westminster is consistently ranked as a “Top Tier” college and recognized on the list of “Great Schools” by the U.S.News & World Report, and that Westminster was named “Best in the West” by the Princeton Review, we hope you’ll come to campus, whether you’re a high school student or one of our alumni, and experience the Westminster community for yourself.
ACADEMICSWestminster offers more than 70 academic programs, including 34 majors, from accounting and international business to nursing and sociology. The most popular majors are business, nursing, psychology, and education. In addition, the college offers a variety of minors and 10 graduate programs. About 95 percent of the students go to graduate school or are employed within six months of graduation. The nursing program has a 100 percent placement rate. In addition to Westminster’s successful outcomes, a Utah Foundation study found that Westminster graduates have among the highest starting salaries of any university graduates in the state. These high starting salaries were attributed in part to the fact that nearly 70 percent of students complete an internship before they graduate.
Students choose Westminster College for many reasons, including our intense focus on individual students and their learning, the combination of liberal education and professional studies, our active learning experiences, dynamic campus environment, and the real world experiences we offer to ensure that our students are prepared to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
HISTORYWestminster College has played a pivotal role in the educational heritage of the intermountain area. Founded in 1875 as the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute, a preparatory school, Westminster first offered college classes in 1897 as Sheldon Jackson College. Named in honor of its primary benefactor, Sheldon Jackson, the college operated for many years on the Collegiate Institute campus in downtown Salt lake City. Gradually the institute became identified as the college preparatory department, and high school classes continued to be an integral part of the curriculum until 1945. In 1902, college trustees adopted the new name, Westminster. Moving to its present location in 1911, Westminster became the first accredited two-year junior college in the intermountain area. In 1935 Westminster modified its curriculum to qualify as a four-year junior college and in 1949 became a four-year liberal arts institution offering baccalaureate
degrees in the arts and sciences.
Today Westminster exists as a fully independent, privately funded, nondenominational, comprehensive liberal arts institution of higher learning with selected graduate programs, meeting the West’s educational needs as it has since 1875.
