Some parents may already know what Stimu-Zone is and some may not.

Stimu-Zone is a national computer-based education programme that offers children between the ages of three to six years (pre-school) and Grade 1 to 7 (primary school) computer training. Stimu-Zone has more than 50 centres across South Africa, of which one is also based here in Louis Trichardt.

The local centre has been operational for quite some time, and since the beginning of March came under the new ownership of Mrs Tinkie van Zyl.

Tinkie bought the Stimu-Zone from the previous own-er, which means she is now responsible for the training. “I have a passion for education and children, and also want to expand the Stimu-Zone pro-grammes into the rural schools surround Louis Trichardt,” said Tinkie.

Through the Stimu-Zone programme, which makes use of the CAPS syllabus in both Afrikaans and English, children are taught how to be-come computer literate. These programmes are aligned with in-class learning. By means of laptops and tablets, Tinkie

also focuses on developing fine-motor skills, the open-ing and closing of computer programmes and the handling and usage of hardware devices. Weekly lessons are 20 minutes long per child, which each child spends individually on a computer.

Tinkie is also complete-ly mobile, which means she brings the lesson to whichever school a child is enrolled at.

Parents are invited to contact Tinkie for more information about Stimu-Zone or to register at Tel 082 920 2799 or by writ-ing her an email at [email protected].

Louis Trichardt se eie Fast and the Furious?

Verder is mnr.

Last week saw a reshuffling of the Makhado Municipality’s executive committee (EXCO) by Mayor David Mutavhatsindi as political head.

The reshuffling comes amidst speculation wheth-er or not Makhado municipal manager Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali will remain in his position as account-ing officer. He has taken a leave of absence from work since last week, following what is said to have been two failed attempts on his life since February 21. In the meantime, police investigations into the two incidents where Mutshinyali was confronted by armed men are continuing.

Despite some questions as to what had sparked the sudden reshuffle during a special sitting of the Makhado Municipal Council last Wednesday, the Makhado Municipality stated in a press release immediately after the reshuffling that it was done to improve service delivery in the municipal area. “The Council shifted four of its former members of the executive committee, Cllr T P Mamorobela, Cllr R S Baloyi, Cllr P F Mashimbye and Cllr T G Tshachuyo. The four will remain members of the Council,” municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bob-

odi stated. He added that the four would continue contributing towards improving service delivery.

The four axed councillors were replaced by Cllrs F J Rikhotso, D Davhana, R Malange and R G Nkanyane. Council’s Ecxo now consists of Mayor Mutavhatsindi as full-time EXCO chairperson, Rikhotso as full-time chairperson in the portfolio department of corporate services, S M Sinyosi as full-time portfolio committee chairperson in the technical services department, D T Ratshikuni as full-time portfolio committee chairperson in the development planning department, Davhana as full-time portfolio committee chairperson in the finance department, R Thandavhatu as full-time portfolio committee chairperson in the community services department and Malange as full-time portfolio committee chairperson for sports, arts and culture, as well as part-time portfolio committee chairper-sons J P Underwood (disaster, moral regeneration and pastors forum department), R G Nkanyani (gender, women and people living with disabilities department) and A du Plooy (Democratic Alliance).

The driver of the truck that claimed Pub-lic Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane’s life and those of his two bodyguards, cried uncontrollably when he made eye contact with the devastated family members of the deceased in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning.

Amukelani Rikhotso (30) of Giyani is facing three counts of culpable homicide and one of drunk driving. He entered the court with his head covered by a grey tracksuit.

Representing the Chabane family, Mr Musa Chabane said the family was gradually learning to cope, although they were devastated by the untimely death of the minister. “We appreciate the support we are getting from the public, the ANC and its alliance,” said Chabane.

Premier Stan Mathabatha said it would take time for his memory to erase what he saw at the accident scene on Sunday morning. Mathabatha

uttered these words on Monday at Frans Mohlala House during a wreath-laying ceremony in mem-ory of the late Minister Chabane, who died in a car crash on Sunday morning. He said people normally said that no comrade was irreplaceable, but he doubted whether anyone would be able to fill the gap Chabane’s death left.

“Chabane was unique and could solve any problem in the party without showing any an-ger. We got a lot of inspiration from him. He was a strategist, a hard worker and someone who was fast to show leadership skills. We are still shocked and devastated, and our hearts are bleeding. It will take us time to recover from this shock. We are also mourning with the families of Chabane’s protectors, Sergeant Lesiba Sekele and Sergeant Lawrence Lentsoane, who died together with the Minister,” he said.

The case was postponed to 10 April for a bail application.

Patients on chronic medica-tion who live in the Vhembe district now have more options to choose from when it comes to collecting their medication.

The Central Chronic Medicine Distribution and Dispensing Programme (CCMDDP) is a joint initiative between Health Systems Trust (HST) and the Department of Health, funded by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

The aim of the programme is to improve patients’ access to chronic medicines and to pilot alternative procurement, dis-pensing and distribution systems by entering into public–private partnerships in National Health Insurance districts.

HST’s project manager, He-lecine Zeeman, says, “Many patients have to leave home at the crack of dawn every month just to collect lifesaving chronic

medication and others apply for a day’s leave, because it takes so long to get to the front of the queue.” It is hoped that this pro-gramme will assist these patients, and decongest overstretched public health-care facilities.

So far, 130 health-care facili-ties in Vhembe District have been recruited to participate in the programme and 12 305 patients have registered for it.

To be part of the programme, you should speak to staff at your health-care facility to find out if you qualify to collect your medication from an alternative pick-up point.

To register on the programme, follow these steps:

Step 1 - Register at your health-care facility to collect your chronic medicine at a pick-up point that is easy for you.

Step 2 -You will receive an SMS to remind you to collect

your chronic medicine from the pick-up point.

Step 3 - Collect your chronic medicine from your chosen pick-up point on the date recorded on your patient collection card.

Step 4 - Take your ID/passport/asylum permit and/or patient collection card with you when collecting your chronic medicine.

Step 5 - Sign that you have received your chronic medicine at the pick-up point.

Step 6 - After 6 months, go back to your health-care facility for a check-up and a new pre-scription.

Once you are registered on the programme, you can phone the toll free number 086 090 6090 with any queries about your med-icine. You are always welcome to go back to the health-care facility if you don’t feel well.

One of the Limpopo Department of Education’s circuit offices, the Tshipise district office, was apparently abandoned and left to rot by the provincial department.

Tshipise is one of the three district offices in the province that were constructed in 2011 at a total combined cost of R106 million. The circuit offices had seemingly been abandoned by the department. The other circuit offices are at Mapela and Bochum. R45 million was allocated for the construction of the Tshipise district office, whilst R33 million was allocated for Bochum District and R28 million for the Mapela offices.

According to the Democratic Alliances (DA) in Limpopo, the three multimillion-rand incomplete offices were left to fall into complete disrepair. This has prompted the DA to file a complaint with the public protector against the provincial department of education.

“I can confirm that we had filed a complaint against the department last week,” said the DA’s media officer, America Ngwepe.

The DA’s member of the provincial legisla-ture, Jacques Smalle, said in a statement that the department had completely wasted R106 million. “These wasted funds could have been put to use in renovating existing schools, providing sani-tation and purchasing textbooks. This warrants thorough investigations by the Public Protector,” said Smalle. He said it was absolutely unacceptable that a government department could build multimil-lion-rand buildings that have no use. “It is also clear that their viability was not properly tested before being put out to tender,” said Smalle.

Meanwhile, the DA has urged the acting edu-cation MEC, Jerry Ndou, and his department to cooperate with the Public Protector as that office

probes this “tragic waste of public money”.The departmental spokesperson, Mr Paena

Galane, disputed the claims and insisted that con-struction on the site was stopped when some pro-vincial departments were put under administration. He said construction was stopped because some of the service providers were being investigated for possible irregularities.

“When the national government took over, some projects were stopped, but now we are in the process of finalising everything on these sites, so that they will start being operational soon,” said Galane. He said it was the responsibility of the Department of Public Works to hand over the offices to the Department of Education. “Those offices will start to function as soon as they hand them over to us,” he added.

Agter is mev. Adele Turner, Cheri Byrnes, Karla van Zyl, Marné Barnard, Kayla Gaigher en Heidi Swanepoel.

The acting mayor and portfolio head of technical services of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Shonisani Sinyosi, officially launched the Ledig road construction project a fortnight ago. The road will be upgraded from gravel to tar. This comes after the municipality budgeted R24.8 million for the project. During the event, Sinyosi appealed to the construction company to deliver quality work for the community. PGN Civils has been appointed to this project, which will take eight months to complete. In our photograph are some of the dignitaries who attended the launch.

Deelnemers kon ‘n bees, skaap of vark wen. Rossie Bezuidenhout van Old Mutual.

The municipal library in Louis Trichardt will re-open on Monday (23 March).

The library was closed after the heavy rains in December last year which left the roof leaking, causing severe damage to the books. According to the manager of communications and events of the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, the roof has since been fixed at a cost of more than R200 000.

“The municipality would like to thank members of the public for their patience and co-operation,” he added.

LiN Media Awards

The Zoutpansberger and its sister publication the Limpopo Mirror once again did exceptionally well during the third annual LiN Media Awards for privately owned independent newspapers in Limpopo.

The LiN Media Awards were established to recognise excellence in not only the journalistic aspects of the newspaper industry, but also to give recognition with regard to marketing and produc-tion excellence.

This year’s awards ceremony took place at the prestigious Koro Creek golf estate in Modimolle on Saturday, 14 March. Publications competing for top honours were the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror, the Bulletin (Tzaneen), Die Pos (Bela-Bela and Modimolle), The Beat (Bela-Bela up to Ham-manskraal), Noordelike Nuus (Mokopane and Lephalale), Kruger2Canyon (Hoedspruit) and die Kwêvoël (Thabazimbi).

The Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror ce-mented their positions as two of the best publica-tions in the province. In the prestigious Newspaper of the Year Award, Limpopo Mirror was runner-up to Die Pos, with the Zoutpansberger fi nishing third. In the category for best website, the Limpopo Mirror was runner-up and the Zoutpansberger third once more. Top honours in this category went to Noordelike Nuus.

In the Press Photo of the Year category, the Zoutpansberger’s Isabel Venter not only won the category, but also secured a third place with her photo entries. Die Pos photographer Herman Steyn was runner-up.

The writing categories were fi ercely contested, with the judges remarking that the competition was so tough that a mere two points separated fi rst and second place in the hard news category. The category was won by the Zoutpansberger’s news editor, Andries van Zyl, with Bulletin’s Francois Aucamp in a close second place. It was also an-other top-three fi nish for Andries van der Heyde,

Newspapers remain among the best in Lim

who came third. In the human interest writing category, Andries

van Zyl came second, with the category being won by Sue Ettmayr of the Bulletin. The points for third place were so close that the judges decided to award two third places, with certifi cates going to Jasper Raats of Noordelike Nuus and Louis Roux of the Bulletin.

In the production category, the Zoutpansberger’s Dallien Viljoen took top honours in the category for small advertisements. David Morrison of the Bulletin managed both a second and third place in this category.

Overall, the judges were impressed by the standard of editorial content and production of all newspapers in the LiN Media group. In the Newspaper of the Year category, the judges said that the Limpopo Mirror “distinguished itself as a newspaper that is community-centred. Its involve-ment with the community must be applauded”. With regard to the Zoutpansberger, the judges said that it “showcased its exceptional community involvement ... In general, the editorial content was of a high standard.”

The Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror cemented their positions as two of the best publications in the province during the past weekend’s LiN Media Awards. Pictured are some of the staff with the awards the newspapers won. Kneeling in front, from left to right, are Phathutshedzo Luvhengo (journalist) and Andries van Zyl (news editor Zoutpansberger). 6 20 March 2015 ZOUTPANSBERGER

Jack Ferro” wat homself verkoop as die “Director and Head of Investor and Vault Services at the Foreign Department of Santander Bank United Kingdom”.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is continuously trying to improve the donor experience.

“We are very pleased to announce that, as of 16 March, all 87 donor centres around the country will be offering one hour free WiFi to all donors,” says Vanessa Raju, national communications manager of the SANBS.

All donors who donate blood at any of the donor centres will receive the one hour free WiFi every 56 days or on their next visit to donate blood. Donors who donate platelets will receive their free access for an hour every four weeks or during their next visit.

“Now that we have the free WI-FI, we want to encourage our donors to take selfies of their dona-tion and to please post them on our Facebook page or to our Twitter handle. We are looking forward to interacting much more with you in the future,” says Raju.

Mag die Here u seën.. - 079 5168303

“Musina Municipality does not seem to have a strong grip on reality”

BRIEWE / LETTERS

I refer to the item on page 8 of your edition of 27 February: “Planned

township for Mopane now a reality”. Unfortunately, Musina Munic-

ipality does not seem to be very strong on reality, which includes the fact that publicly funded town-ships, unless established where there is a high demand for labour, only provide breeding grounds for all manner of social ills. Mopane already has serious water and crime problems, but – as the article actu-ally mentions – it is in the middle of an area of commercial farming. Not only does farming employ very low levels of labour, but in the current wage climate of South Africa, farms can only remain commercial if they replace human labour with ma-chines, however bad for the environ-ment that may be. Little prospect of employment there, so we can expect the worst.

It will be nice to have a primary school and a clinic at Mopane, but who will occupy the 986 proposed residential sites? People who must be willing to do without water, for a start, and it is very unlikely that they will be farm workers. Apart from the fact that most farm workers around here are actually Zimbab-wean, farms commonly provide accommodation for all but seasonal labour, and any worker would cer-tainly prefer to live and sleep close to their workplace rather than travel 20km or more where there is no public transport. Or will transport also be provided?

As it is very doubtful if there will be 986 farm workers willing to live off-farm and in Mopane, one can only suppose that Musina Munici-pality is expecting the occupants of its proposed residential sites to be mine workers, as there have been proposals and negotiations for Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) to begin open-cast mining in the Mopane area, among others.

This has been going on for sever-al years, now, and it is still not clear if CoAL is in a financial or even environmental position to utilize the area. If it does ever provide employ-ment for local people, which is very doubtful, such people will be lucky to be employed for 30 years, until mining is finished. All mines have a limited lifespan, as the people at Tshikondeni coal mine, further east, have already found.

Will other industries be started up at Mopane to employ 1 000 people or so? Unless Musina Municipal-ity can be sure of this, they must seriously reconsider any building programme. Providing homes for people desperate for water and for money in an area already considered a hotspot for poaching and crime does not seem a sensible develop-ment strategy. More sensible would be first to provide long-term jobs, and then the homes - bearing in mind that neither farming nor min-ing is a good source of jobs.

There were plenty creative costumes to be seen during this year’s Louis Trichardt Cansa Relay for Life, like these two ladies in their festive hats.

The relay team of Borrels Primary School drew inspiration from their school’s name for their Cansa Relay for Life theme. During the first round, the whole school blew bubbles.

As always, the first lap of the Cansa Relay for Life was opened by local cancer survivors, followed by their care givers. This year’s Louis Trichardt’s Relay for Life attracted more than 50 teams who supported Cansa’s efforts to collect money that will go towards researching a cure for cancer.

Throughout the night supporters of this year’s Cansa Relay for for Life were treated to life music from among others the band November Lights.

The Cansa Toktokkie joined in the first lap, for cancer survivors, during this year’s Cansa Relay for Life that was held on the sports field of Louis Trichardt High School last Friday.
