What is YYS?YYS is an exciting residential youth orchestra course in Yorkshire, showcasing some of the best young classical musicians aged 12 – 18 in region, providing them with excellent musical education and orchestral training.

The concert for 2016 will take place at Leeds Town Hall with international soloist Stephen Hough – one of Classic FM’s “25 greatest pianists of all time”.

TuitionAt YYS, students are given coaching by a world class team of musicians, specialising in education. The course gives an intense and exciting week of rehearsals and in depth sectionals.

YYS is delighted to welcome back acclaimed conductor Tom Hammond to our 2016 course as well as a world class team of musicians to lead our sectional rehearsals. They come from institutions from all over Europe, including; European String Teachers’ Association, Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Academy of Music, Opera North, Scottish Opera, Ingenium Academy, Edward Said National Conservatory of Music (Jerusalem).

WorkshopsDuring the course, students are provided with workshops to help them develop these skills, which are not only limited to helping their musical development, but are transferable life skills. These include workshops on singing, movement and communication, performance psychology and anxiety (delivered by the University of Leeds) and performance etiquette (delivered by the Royal Northern College of Music).

At YYS we realise that students will often be thinking about university and career choices. To help students gain the information they need, we have workshops delivered by the University of Leeds and the Royal Northern College of Music on what it is like to study at a university or music college.

YYS ExperienceWe are passionate about providing a fun and safe environment for young people to develop. YYS provides Pastoral Staff to help with everything non-musical, whether it be organising entertainment as well as dealing with all aspects of health and safety. We firmly believe that enjoyment and learning go hand in hand and our Pastoral Staff are here to ensure that students have the best time they can.

Our 2016 course takes place at the stunning Queen Margaret’s School in Escrick, just outside of York. We have full access to the incredible facilities, with the food being a huge highlight of last year’s course!

We are incredibly proud of the family feel that we have at YYS. This is something that we take great effort to create. Each day there are evening activities, with the goal of social interaction and fun. These range from quiz nights, team building, YYS sports day and even water balloon archery with the staff as targets. All of our employees are subject to Disclosure and Barring Services checks in accordance with UK law.
