When you have years of work experience and natural talent but no college degree to pair it with, it can be easy to feel less than.

I can remember hearing a group of friends talk about college and quickly making an excuse to leave the room. I didn’t want to have to say that I never finished.

Heather Larson has a natural gift for working with children. When her own kids were young, her priority was being with them during their early years and other priorities like career and college were secondary. However,

Heather always maintained valuable connections to education by working in an early childhood environment, serving as the board president of her son’s preschool, and running a summer camp. She used her talent, built her experience, and grew her passion for teaching—a college degree wasn’t yet a component of this package.

As the years went by, Heather devoted more time to her teaching career and she served as a kindergarten assistant for a child with Down’s syndrome. She loved the work but she knew that without a degree and without certification, her opportunities were going to be limited.

How Heather’s experience, determination, and courage helped her earn her degree

VALIDATION

Through a combination of helping her high school-aged son with his college search and hearing an ad or two on TV and radio, Heather learned about Granite State College and made an appointment.

At the time, I didn’t really know how to start. I wondered if I was even qualified to go to college. I had transcripts from junior college, but I was still scared.

Her Academic Coach advised her which courses to take first and told her that she’s a great candidate for Prior Learning Assessment (PLA).

When I got home, I went through everything in the catalog and read more about prior learning. I looked at my husband and I said “I think I can get some credit for all the things I have done over the years at work.”

This realization led to an incredible journey at Granite State. After taking several semesters worth of courses and getting re-acclimated to college work, Heather dove into her prior learning portfolio.

The whole portfolio process was really cleansing. When you’re tracking all of your career milestones and mapping your goals, it’s like “WOW, I really did a lot of impressive work.” I was able to get 12 credits from my portfolio, which saved me a few semesters worth of classes.

Heather’s volunteer experience as board president at the preschool fulfilled her

small group communications degree requirement. She also used her experience building curriculum as the director of the summer camp for additional credit.

Last summer, Heather completed her bachelor’s degree with teacher certification with dreams of growing her career as an educator. She crossed the stage at the Commencement ceremony wearing maroon and gold cords to signify her membership in GSC’s prestigious Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Lambda. Once a woman who wondered if she was qualified to go back to college, she graduated as one of the Class of 2014’s best and brightest!

Library ServicesThe Granite State College Library and Research Commons (LRC) staff provides students with a full complement of services to meet their research needs. Library services are available by e-mail and phone during the day and evening hours seven days a week. The College Librarian provides support in developing a strategy for finding the resources needed to complete course assignments.

The GSC Discovery Service is the gateway to our electronic library collection, providing a full cadre of research databases, and thousands of e-books tailored to support the curriculum. As a GSC student you also have access to the collections of other academic libraries in New Hampshire. With a GSC college ID resources may be borrowed from NHCUC member libraries.

The Library offers a Library Research Success Seminar throughout the state and online. These 45 minute seminars are a great way to prepare for the research assignment students will encounter in their classes.

STUDENT RESOURCESAccuplacerAccuplacer, a Computerized Placement Test, is one option used to determine placement for those registering for CRIT 500, MATH 502 and selected management courses. This assessment tool is divided into four sections: reading comprehension, sentence skills, arithmetic and algebra. Campuses typically offer Accuplacer preparation workshops.

Refund and Withdrawal PoliciesYou may drop a course during its add/drop period by logging on to WebROCK, calling or emailing your campus or the Registrar’s Office. You can also visit my.granite.edu/forms-faqs to find and download the Add/Drop Withdrawal form. Fax it to your campus or the Registrar’s Office at 603.513.1386. If a specific drop date is not noted, the standard Add/Drop deadline will apply. Tuition and fees are 100% refundable if a student drops a course in accordance with the following limitations:• 12-week courses: drop prior to the end of the second week of classes. For Summer after the 1st week.• Unusually short-duration courses: drop prior to the first session.• Learning Contracts: students are notified when registered by the Registrar’s Office of the last

dates to drop & withdraw.• Weekend courses/courses beginning after the first week of classes: visit my.granite.edu

Note For Financial Aid StudentsIf you are receiving federal financial aid and withdraw from coursework in any given term, federal return calculations may apply. A pro rata schedule is used to determine the amount of federal aid a student has earned at the time of withdrawal up to the 60% point of each course length. You are responsible for any resulting account balance. Withdrawals do affect your completion rate for Satisfactory Academic Progress required to receive federal aid.

If you are (1) withdrawing from all your coursework in a term; and (2) planning to return for late start coursework in the same term; and (3) the official drop date for the late start coursework has not passed; you are required to provide the Office of Financial Aid with written confirmation of your intent to return during the current term to avoid a withdrawal calculation. Written confirmation may be provided on the Withdrawal Form or by emailing financial.aid@granite.edu at the time of withdrawal.

Advanced Funds for Federal Pell Recipients to Obtain Books and SuppliesEligible Federal Pell recipients may have funds paid to their accounts ten days prior to the term start to cover the average cost for books and supplies if there is a credit balance on their account after direct charges have been paid. Students are responsible for repayment of these funds if they drop from any or all coursework. Students may opt out of this process by submitting the Opt Out of Advanced Funds Form. Students who have a previous account balance are not eligible for Advanced Funds. To be eligible a student must be registered for classes at the time the advanced fund process runs 10 days prior to term start.

Student Financial Responsibility AgreementWhen you register for courses, you must submit a Student Financial Responsibility Agreement. To complete the form visit WebROCK and select “Registration,” “Student Accounts,” or the “View Holds” menu options. A paper form is available at my.granite.edu/student-accounts. Call Student Accounts Office at 603.513.1330 with questions regarding the agreement.

PAYING FOR YOUR COURSESPayment for all classes must be made or payment arrangement confirmed in order to remain enrolled. Students will be dropped from classes if payment arrangements are not made by the published due date for the term.

Cancellation for Non-PaymentAccounts are considered paid when any of the following conditions are met:

1. Payment for all tuition, fees, and charges is made in full, or

2. A payment arrangement is approved by the Student Accounts Office for all remaining charges (ex. third party payments, VA, Voc Rehab, pending scholarships, etc.) or

Admitted Degree Candidates Using Financial Aid3. Financial Aid is finalized and covers all charges, or

4. Financial Aid is finalized; however the award does not cover all charges and a payment arrangement with the Student Accounts Office is approved, or

5. The FAFSA and all required documents are received by the Office of Financial Aid.
