Summer at Upper Valley Music CenterUVMC’s summer session runs from June 21 through August 28, 2016. Flexibility in scheduling allows families and students to fit in lessons around camps and trips. We offer vocal and instrumental instruction in a variety of styles and some exciting programs, festivals and group classes to challenge musicians of all ages.

Our teachers are among the best in the area and teach all ages, including children, adults, and seniors, from beginning to advanced levels. A listing of our outstanding faculty and their biographies is available on our website.

New students are welcome in the summer. Join us for one or more of our summer programs!

Individual LessonsSuzuki and Traditional lessons are available throughout the summer. Students may sign up for as many lessons as they like on a schedule that is convenient for both student and teacher. New students are welcome!

Traditional Lessons: 30 min. $34 per lesson 45 min $47 per lesson 60 min. $60 per lesson

Suzuki Program: Per lesson tuition includes all group classes for the summer.

Music Discovery Week!Offered in partnership with Crossroads Academy

Children’s Section (6-8 year olds): Discover your inner song, drum, trumpet, cello and more! With UVMC’s Sing! program at its core, campers will discover music with their voices, hands, fingers and feet over a week of fun-filled lessons, rehearsals and games. In addition to daily Children’s Chorus, Instrument Discovery Days will feature families of instruments, giving campers a chance to find the one they love. Campers will also learn the fundamentals of pitch, rhythm, and music notation through lively games and movement activities. Where will your musical path lead? You’ll have to join us to discover!

*Extended Day Program: Crossroads offers a free Extended Day Program from 3:00-5:00 pm to accommodate children who require additional hours of supervision. The Extended Day Program will offer students an opportunity to read, play board games, create in the arts, or have unstructured physical activities such as basketball or four-square. To guarantee a place in the Extended Day Program, we ask that you reserve a place at the time of your registration. On occasion, we will also be able to accommodate students in the Extended Day Program if we are notified at the time of drop-off.

Music and Art ProgramsThe world is filled with many sounds made by many instruments. In these action-packed camps co-presented by Upper Valley Music Center and AVA Gallery & Art Center, campers will create instruments with artists and work with a composer to craft original music with their new instruments. The week culminates with collaborative performances displaying the intersection of visual and musical art.

Sound Splash & the Upcycle OrchestraOffered in partnershp with the AVA Gallery and Art Center

Come feel the beat and find the rhythm in your feet! Let’s find out how sound works and how to turn racket into a symphony. We will transform materials that are often discarded or ignored into surprising conveyors of rhythm and melody. We will use paint to make soundscapes for our compositions. Our beautiful instruments will form an orchestra. Performance on Friday!

Music VideoOffered in partnership with CATV

In this week-long summer program co-presented by the Upper Valley Music Center and CATV, young videographers and musicians will work together to produce an original music video. The resulting collaboration will be an exciting step into the world of music and video that will have everybody clicking ‘share’.

Middle SchoolTry your hand at all parts of the process. While each camper will have the chance to shine in an area of their choosing, everyone will participate in creating original music under the guidance of a composer, and designing and shooting video with CATV videographers.

High School Participants will be organized into teams comprised of musicians and videographers. Each team will work with experienced professionals to create an original work based around a common theme. Students may participate as either a musician or videographer. Open to all instruments and voice. Pre-formed ensembles may apply. Singing for the Stage

A fun and energetic class where students learn the fundamentals of singing and acting using Musical Theater songs. Each day students will be able to perform solo as well as work on ensemble pieces. The week culminates with a performance for friends and family at 12 pm on Friday. Includes individual instruction time for each student.

Hanover Street Chamber Music Festival / Summer

The Hanover Street Chamber Music Festival / Summer is an opportunity for adults who play classical instruments to receive professional coaching, meet other classical musicians in the area, and get a chance to perform chamber music repertoire. Each group will be assigned based on experience and playing level, and will receive coaching from UVMC faculty in a supportive environment. The festival will culminate in an informal performance.

Suzuki Summer String Week!

Get your summer off to a musical start with guest teacher Ms. Joanna Nelson and the UVMC Suzuki team in a fun and challenging week of instrumental inspiration. Suzuki Summer String Week includes daily repertoire class, orchestra/pre-note reading class, technique class for Book 4-5 students, music and movement class, and optional mini-private lessons. Open to violin, viola and cello students from Twinkle to Book 5. We’ll finish off the week with a fun noon-time concert on Friday, July 1.

Ages 5 - 17 (Must have completed kindergarten. Advanced String Technique & Chamber Music Week(Offered in conjunction with Suzuki Summer String Week)

Join us for an intense week of string technique and chamber music. Participants will receive daily instruction in etude and scales class and chamber ensemble coaching, plus they will have the opportunity to be mentors for younger string students in orchestral and/or group class settings.

Chamber groups will be formed and music sent out in advance. Participants will be asked to prepare an etude and all 3 octave major and minor scales in advance with your private teacher.

Music Together©: Summer!Music Together© is an internationally recognized early childhood music and movement curriculum for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners and the adults who love them. Music Together© classes involve both children and parents or other caregivers in informal singing, chanting, moving, listening and instrument playing activities that are developmentally appropriate for very young children. The summer session is a great way for new families to try the program, or for continuing families to keep the music going all the summer! (6 Weeks)

Sinfonia

A fun, beginning string orchestra for violin, viola, cello, and bass students. Learn to play as a section, follow the conductor’s baton and enjoy reading new music with friends! Returning members and new members are all welcome in the summer. Requires note-reading in the keys of A, D, G and quarter note, half note, and eighth note rhythms. (6 Weeks; Ages 7 - 12)

Fiddle Fun!Learn to play fun, toe-tapping fiddle tunes by ear! Tunes and styles from New England, Ireland, Quebec and more. Students learn by ear in the aural tradition with sheet music provided as a back-up. For Suzuki Book 2 or equivalent traditional students and up. (6 Weeks; Ages 7 – 14)

Monday Night FiddleJoin us each week over the summer to learn fiddle tunes from around the world. Students learn by ear with sheet music as a back-up. Students will develop ear training, instrumental technique and theory knowledge. Familiarity with the scales of D, A, and G major required. No prior fiddle experience required. (8 Weeks; Ages 16 and up)

Large Ensemble Notes

Youth Orchestras do not meet in the summer months, but if you’re interested in playing in an ensemble, please refer to Chamber Music. If you are interested in joining an orchestra during the school year, call to schedule a placement audition.

Children’s Chorus and Youth Chorus do not meet during the summer months, but Music Discovery Camp provides a fun, summer choral experience for ages 6 – 8 and 9 - 12.

Tuition Assistance

We believe all residents of the Upper Valley, no matter what their financial situation, should have access to quality music education. Tuition assistance is given to a student on the basis of need, availability of funds, and commitment to music. If you are seeking tuition assistance, please complete the Tuition Assistance application, which can be found at www.uvmusic.org or at the front desk.

Tuition Assistance applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but must be completed before the first scheduled lesson or class. Families who receive tuition assistance are expected to support UVMC as volunteers for events, through committee membership, or by assisting in our fundraising endeavors. More information on this and other expectations for families receiving aid is outlined in the notification of tuition assistance. Tuition assistance is granted based on a formula that considers total family income and family size. Questions or specific requests about tuition assistance should be made to the Executive Director.

All information is held in strictest confidence. You will be notified of your tuition assistance award, if any, and invoiced for the remaining amount. Please refer to www.uvmusic.org and the UVMC Student Handbook for further information on UVMC’s tuition assistance policy.
