Caravaggio –The Bad Boy (and founder) of Baroque Art

Carolyn AbneyMichelangelo Merisi di Caravaggio astounded everyone who knew him – or his work. Patronized by Cardinals, Popes, and the head of the Knights of Malta, his altarpieces o en startled the groups who commissioned them – wouldn’t you be stunned to see the face of Rome’s best known pros tute presented as the Virgin Mary?

He fl ed Rome a er killing a man over an argument about a bet on a tennis game and was pursued by the Pope’s police. But he s ll managed to paint giant works openly in Naples, Malta, and Sicily. And the only one he signed looks as though his signature is in his own blood. Who said the late 16th century was dull? Come learn more about the man and his work!

A er Carolyn Abney received a BA in Humani es from Emory, she said reality set in: “That is, I needed a real job! A variety of business degrees and adventures later, I had the opportunity to go back to that fi rst love - art history. I studied at the Courtauld Ins tute of Art in London. In Florence, I was able to study under Drs. Rab Ha ield and Jennifer Cook at Syracuse University as well as with John T. Spike, a Professor at the Va can and author of a reference book on Caravaggio. Since none of them can be in Athens right now, I’ll draw on what I learned to introduce you to the single painter whose name is men oned (so it is said) as o en as Rembrandt’s.”

Coastal Processes And Conserva on: WhatWill Be Le For Future Genera ons?

David DallmeyerThis course will introduce par cipants to the dynamic and complex nature of the marine coastal environment with an emphasis on the Georgia shore. It has been designed to foster awareness of the delicate balance and interdependency of the various physical and biological process that help shape coastal regions. A en on will be focused on the response of biological and physical systems to both natural and human-induced stress. The environmental impact of various coastal stabiliza on techniques will be discussed and contrasted with methods of long-term conserva on.

Marine processes involved in the erosion, transporta on and deposi on of coastal sediment will be outlined. Natural varia ons in storm-induced erosional parameters will be documented with case histories. The record of recent sea-level rise will be evaluated, and the implica ons for future coastal change discussed in the context of increased rates of global warming. Problems involved with maintaining the current rate and types of coastal development will be highlighted from a perspec ve of shoreline stability and in terms of coastal pollu on. The biologic diversity within various coastal habitats will be explained, and the importance of coastal wetlands stressed. Representa ve case studies will be examined and evaluated. In addi on, the legal framework for coastal protec on in Georgia will be discussed and appropriate methods of conserva on evaluated. Methods or risk predic on, prepara on and assessment will be assessed.

David Dallmeyer is professor of geology at the University of Georgia and a member of the school’s Environmental Ethics Faculty. His teaching and research have focused on the processes and chronology of plate tectonics and mountain building, and he has conducted geological fi eldwork on all con nents. NOTICE TO OLLI@UGA MEMBERS:As of the iscal year 2012-2013, the annual OLLI@UGA

membership dues will increase from $40 to $45.

At the April 18th OLLI Board of Directors mee ng, the Budget Commi ee, which had been working on ways to balance the OLLI budget for 2012-2013, recommended raising the annual OLLI dues from $40 to $45. It was pointed out that OLLI@UGA’s membership dues were among the lowest of the 118 OLLIs in the country and that membership in OLLI@UGA off ers many benefi ts. It allows members to register for OLLI classes, Lunch and Learns, and Lunch and Lectures; gives them subscrip ons to OLLI publica ons; off ers entry to a number of social func ons (some free of charge); and provides the opportunity to join any of OLLI’s numerous Special Interest Groups.

In light of these considera ons and the need to balance the budget, the Board unanimously voted to raise the annual OLLI@UGA dues from $40 to $45, eff ec ve as of the fi scal year 2012 -2013.

2011-2015 is the sesquicentennial observance of the American Civil War. The War is known by many names, depending upon ones’ regional allegiances. It has been called The Late Unpleasantness and 150 years later, the manner in which the War is remembered or commemorated could be called The Current Unpleasantness. June, 2012 is 1862 in the sesquicentennial observance. It has been a li le over a year since General Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard ordered Confederate forces surrounding Fort Sumter to commence fi ring. The fi rst signifi cant engagement of the War at Manassas, Virginia was a major Confederate victory. Since then, the War has not gone well for the Confederacy. Signifi cant losses in Western Virginia, the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, Forts Donelson and Henry in Tennessee, the Peninsula of Virginia and Shiloh in southwestern Tennessee. General Robert E. Lee has just assumed command of the renamed Army of Northern Virginia. The two-day Ba le of Shiloh 6-7 April resulted in more American casual es than all the combined wars America had fought to that point. And, the War was just really ge ng started. No one could imagine the death and destruc on to come. In this course, we will discuss the Principles of War, the organiza on and manner in which the armies fought, weapons, logis cs and geography. A er an overview of the War as a whole, par cular a en on will be placed on the War in Georgia and ways in which the War may be remembered or commemorated in the poli cal reality of today.

The Brain’s Got Rhythm:Neuronal Oscilla ons and the Mind

Ryan CanoltyWhat role do neuronal oscilla ons play in the dynamic regula on of mul -scale brain networks? Somehow, billions of individual nerve cells coordinate their ac vity so precisely that it results in a single unifi ed event, such as a toddler taking her fi rst steps, an athlete scoring the perfect goal, or a poet fi nding just the right word to express the inexpressible.

While complex, the neuronal ac vity required for percep on, cogni on, and ac on occurs effi ciently and eff ortlessly. How does this happen? This course will survey the growing evidence that a hierarchy of interac ng oscilla ons helps regulate mul -scale brain networks. Like the manual transmission of a car, brain rhythms seem to form an interlocking system ideal for connec ng fast events to the slow and the very small to the very large.

In this course, I’ll focus on the origins of brain rhythms, their connec on to diff erent states of consciousness such as deep sleep, dreaming, and awake behavior, and explore the role of oscilla ons in regula ng the ac vity of single neurons. Finally, I conclude with a glimpse of how coordinated global pa erns of oscillatory coupling may lead to new prac cal clinical applica ons such as brain-machine interfaces to help pa ents a er stroke or trauma c brain injury.

Ryan T. Canolty is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and the Helen Wills Neuroscience Ins tute at the University of California, Berkeley. His primary research interests center on the role of neuronal oscilla ons in local computa on and long-range communica on in mul -scale brain networks. As part of his graduate research, Ryan used subdural electrocor cogram (ECoG) signals recorded directly from the brains of neurosurgical pa ents to inves gate the spa otemporal dynamics of the large-scale networks underlying a en on, memory, and language. Before graduate school, he served as an offi cer at the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power Training Command teaching nuclear physics and thermodynamics. Before that, he graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Mathema cs and Cogni ve Neuroscience. If you go all the back, you’ll fi nd that he was born in the back seat of a car on the way to the hospital. He now prefers to sit in front.

The Speaker in the PoemJames Kissane

Poetry’s many voices are a chief source of its many pleasures. Some mes the voice in the poem speaks for the poet, but some mes the speaker represents a quite diff erent “character” with a quite diff erent viewpoint. Some mes diff erent speakers confront one another within the poem. This course will explore, through examina on of selected short poems, the rela onship between our impressions of the imagined speaker(s) and the eff ect (and meaning) of the poem. We will discuss ways in which poems take advantage of the various possibili es for self-expression on the one hand and inven ve characteriza on on the other.

Dr. Kissane holds a Ph.D. in English from The Johns Hopkins University and is Professor Emeritus of Literature at Grinnell College, where he taught for 38 years. His publica ons include books, ar cles, and reviews on a variety of mostly 19th- and 20th-century topics and writers. In past semesters he has presented several diff erent courses for LIR/OLLI.

Nash Boney, Danny Sniff UGA’s own Nash Boney and Danny Sniff will off er us a classic tour of our own Classic City campus. Nash, a re red UGA faculty member, and Danny, Associate Vice President for Facili es Planning, will tell us everything we have always wanted to know about the nooks and crannies on campus. They will delight us with campus stories, accumulated over many years at UGA. You will not want to miss these campus icons in ac on!

Nash Boney taught history at UGA for 28 years, specializing in southern and especially Georgia history. Many of his publica ons dealt with UGA itself. Among his works are APictorial History of the University of Georgia (UGA Press, 1984 and revised in 2000). He has also wri en 21 ar cles on UGA over the years in a wide variety of journals and newspapers. During the publica on of the book and ar cles, he accumulated over 300 slides, providing plenty of visuals for reinforcing his lectures.

Danny Sniff provides leadership and direc on for the implementa on of the University of Georgia’s Physical Master Plan. As the University’s chief architect, he is responsible for the maintenance of high standards for architecture, engineering and planning in support of the academic mission of the University of Georgia. Sniff joined the University of Georgia’s Physical Plant Division in 1988, following me as an architect in the private sector. Sniff earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Tennessee and a master’s of business administra on from Brenau University.

Special Interest Groups (SIGS)BeadiacsMary Ann Kelly, [email protected], 706-613-6311Individuals interested in beading, stringing, and simple wire work will get together once a week for three hours or so to work on their projects, brainstorm ideas and help each other when our work takes an oops! Par cipants who have no experience but would just like to see what it’s all about are welcome because beaders are happy to provide basic informa on and demonstrate techniques.

BicyclingJohn Songster, [email protected], 706-548-8181The original theme of the group s ll holds true: “For those who long to take the drudgery out of health club exercising or want to start a fi tness program that perpetuates itself, a new opportunity to get back on a real bicycle is s ll available.” We also conduct “get started again” instruc on and introductory rides that will help par cipants develop their cycling growth to whatever level they wish. New legs are welcome.

BonsaiClaire Clements, [email protected], 706-548-0211Winnie Kelly, 706-548-1418This informal group meets on the 4th Thursday of each month, from 2:30 to 4:30 PM. Bonsai, literally translated, means po ed tree. Members bring suitable plant materials to pot, and/or those already po ed, which they wish to trim, exhibit, or discuss. Field trips are made to a variety of places of interest to the group that are within driving distance, to view collec ons, and to purchase plants, materials and tools. Newbies to Bonsai Welcomed! Contact Clements to receive Bonsai emails.

Book Discussion GroupDiana Cerwonka, [email protected], 706-543-7780The Book Discussion Group meets on the second Thursday of the month at the ACCA, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Books are selected by group vote. We support UGA opera student produc ons, share informa on about opera, and off er a pre-opera meal, where the UGA opera graduate students present informa on about the current broadcast. The Met Opera broadcasts are on Saturday a ernoon, October through May, with an evening encore broadcast three weeks later.

We plan at least one hike a month, working up to more, if there is enough interest.
