In this weeks Parsha of Ki Tetzeh we find an interesting Mitzva concerning safety in the home. When you build a new home you shall build a guardrail for your roof so that you shall not cause blood to be spilled in your house ולא תשים דמים בביתךIn addition to the obvious concerns regarding roof safety the Gemara (Bava Kama 15b, 46a) includes the prohibition of raising a dangerous dog which will endanger others. We also find in the Zohar that the Y etzer Hara is referred to as a dog - which leads us to an interesting observation. A dog is called mans best frienddue to its legendary loyalty however when we talk about a Pitbull this may not be the case. So too with the Yetzer Hara which appears to be your loyal friend and companion – but if you are not vigilant it can turn into a vicious and treacherous force wreaking havoc in your life. As we prepare for Rosh Hashana we must be wary of things that may not be as good as they appear and use all of our energies for good. A special event for IDF Lone Soldiers will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Shefayim Water Park, just outside Tel Aviv. Some 5,500 lone soldiers from all corners of the world are expected to attend, along with 1,000 fellow Israeli soldiers whose duty it is to support and assist lone soldiers. In attendance will also be IDF unit commanders and high ranking officers. The day of rest and recreation is being sponsored by Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) to personally thank these brave men and women in uniform for their service and who put their lives on the line for Israel every day. Currently there are some 6,400 Lone Soldiers from 80 different countries serving in the IDF. Lone Soldiers serving in the IDF through the FIDFs Lone Soldiers Program receive financial, social and emotional support during and after their challenging military service. FIDF also provides a flight home for Lone Soldiers to visit with their family and friends.
