FAIRMONT PREP ASEP ALUMNI SPEAK TO IBP & ASEP STUDENTS

On August 25, 2016, the Fairmont Prep International Business Program and Advanced Science and Engineering Program held the third annual Advanced Programs Speaker Series, welcoming back alumni Payal and Nikita Patel.

Since graduating at the top of her class at Fairmont Prep in 2013, Nikita attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Nikita has spent her summers interning at a startup accelerator where she organized the largest Crowd-funding event in Southern California, in which ten startups pitched their company to 100+ investors and the winner

received $200,000 in funding. Nikita also did marketing strategy, press releases, and search engine optimization for two of their portfolio companies.

As a consultant at the Wharton Small Business Development Center, Nikita facilitates Women’s Vertical which does financial modeling for women-owned businesses. Nikita also helps organize the annual App-It-UP event and is an associate at FOUNDER.org . Both of these opportunities allow Nikita to pursue her passion of assisting startups in getting off the ground and raising funding in the process. At U Penn, Nikita was a Wharton Ambassador, conducting information sessions explaining the Wharton undergraduate experience for prospective students each semester.

Payal was a Regents Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley studying Business Administration in the Haas School of Business. At Cal, she was a Director within the Berkeley

student government, and helped to establish the first student-run startup incubator on campus, while also serving on the executive board of Global Business Brigades, organizing a nonprofit, micro-enterprise consulting trip to Honduras for Summer 2015. In addition, she was an active member in Delta Sigma Pi, the premier professional business fraternity on campus, where she serves as Vice President of Finance.

In her professional career, Payal has worked at Amazon as a marketing intern, and at KKR, one of the world’s top private equity firms in the world as the only college intern in their

San Francisco office. She recently interned at NBC Universal in New York City this past summer as a financial analyst and absolutely loved working in the Big Apple. After winning the Google Marketing Competition and Goldman Sachs Competition at Berkeley, she hopes to pursue a career in technology and business after graduation.

Outside of schoolwork, she continues to play volleyball in her

free-time and studied at the London School of Economics as part of her abroad experience, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Payal and Nikita who were both in the advanced science program, spoke about the strong foundation they received while at Fairmont Prep, the close ties they forged with the Fairmont Prep community, the college application and selection process, their university years, and the value of internships. Students in the audience asked questions, including how to balance academics extracurriculars, achieve a work/life balance, and how they were able to obtain such impressive internship positions.

Payal and Nikita stressed the importance of organizational skills when balancing many responsibilities and advised the students to follow their passions. They identified one of the keys to their success as taking on leadership roles and demonstrating their commitment inside and outside of school. Finally, they encouraged students to take advantage of opportunities to ask questions and seek advice from upperclassmen, teachers and counselors, and professionals mentors.

Each summer, Fairmont Advanced Science and Engineering Program students take part in some incredible internship and research programs and opportunities, allowing them to gain real world and university experience. Here are some excerpts from their experiences:

On September 13, Fairmont Prep Advanced Science and Engineering Program students traveled to the Long Beach Convention Center to take part in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics annual space conference.

The day started with students hearing from speakers who talked about their work and how they progressed from high school students to industry leading professionals.

First, the representative from Aerojet Rocketdyne spoke about his work as a heat combustion expert on rocket engines. Next, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory robotics expert discussed his work mimicking a gecko’s use of Vanderwaal’s forces to develop robots that can stick to surfaces in space. They were followed by a NASA mission control engineer, who discussed her work with Environment Controls and Life Support Systems for astronauts in space.

Finally, a current doctoral candidate advised the students on how to make the most of their college experiences and set themselves up for an aerospace career. After having the chance to speak with experts and get their advice, the students went to the exhibit hall where they took advantage of the opportunity to network with a variety of industry professionals.

The students were able to see some of the latest technological advances and ask questions about the great variety of specialties represented.

How do our daily actions affect our local coastal ecosystems?

On October 10, Mr. Jesus Reyes, President and Head Researcher at Pacific Coast Environmental Conservancy, shared with students some of the issues and problems affecting our local Pacific coast area. Because of the Southern California Bight, which is the curved part of our coastline from Point Conception to San Diego, we have a unique set of issues local to our area.

Focusing on the role of endocrine disruptors and various persistent organic pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, Mr. Reyes shared data from studies demonstrating the effect of our waste material handling on foundational organisms in the local marine ecosystem.

He proposed meaningful changes in our daily routine, including decreasing plastic usage, disposing of medications in a responsible manner, thus avoiding dumping pharmaceuticals into the waste stream. Pacific Coast Environmental Conservancy, located in Long Beach, hosts Coastal clean up days, as well as summer internship opportunities.

The Pacific Coast Environmental Conservancy has internships available.Students interested in finding out more about this non-profit organization can contact Mrs. Leslie.

Fairmont Prep Advanced Science and Engineering Program students spent another busy summer gaining knowledge and experience in a variety of professional and academic settings.

Fairmont continued its ongoing partnership with Boeing Huntington Beach, where students have the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional engineers. Their assignments included:

• Helping to develop process and material specifications• Chemical usage as it applies to assembly of parts• The role of 3D solid models in design and analysis of products• Performing test procedures required to qualify space flight avionics hardware and

various circuit card modules within the docking system controller• Providing creative input to help communicate Boeing’s innovative brand

In addition to working with their mentors, students also took part in numerous tours, guest speaker sessions, and instructional seminars to give them exposure to the broad variety of science and engineering that takes place at Boeing.

Fairmont also continued its ongoing partnership with Applied Power Concepts. Applied Power Concepts provides product development, manufacturing and analysis services for the chemical process industry, the biotechnology process industry, and the renewable energy generation industry. Fairmont ASEP interns have assisted in all aspects of the business including assisting in the lab, observing the manufacturing plant, and learning about running a business.

In addition to industry experience, ASEP students took advantage of university research opportunities working in labs around California. Some of the activities that ASEP students participated in included:

• UCSD Research Scholars program working in the lab of Dr. Komives, who studies the structure, function, and thermodynamics of protein-protein interactions.
