So what are we supposed to do now? The buildup has been
draining. The winds of Teshuva blew through the month of Elul
and brought us Rosh Hashana. The Aseres Y emai Teshuva ushered
in Y om Kippur and then we celebrated Zman Simchasenu in the
Sukkah. Topping it all off was the joyous dancing and singing on
Simchas Torah which our sore throats and tired feet attest to! And
now suddenly…it is Shabbos Bereshis. What do we do now? There
is a profound teaching of the Kotzker Rebbe on the first three
words of the Torah which will be read on Shabbos that provide the
answer. The Torah begins with the words
בראשית ברא אישאיב
usually translated as “In the beginning Hashem created” which the
Rebbe read with a slight twist – Hashem created only the
beginning – the rest is up to us! Shabbos Bereshis is a reality
check to see how we will apply all of the beginnings we have
recently experienced and become better and kinder people. The
High Holidays are a platform which elevated us to new heights and
opportunities. So what are we supposed to do now? Our real work
lays ahead. May we be wise enough to maximize all of Hashem’s
gifts for a happy healthy and sweet new year!
