“Never odd or even”.” Madam, in Eden I'm Adam”. “Sums are
not set as a test on Erasmus” What do these phrases have in
common? They are all palindromes – they can be read the same
way back and forth. In the middle of the drama in this week’s
Parsha of Toldos we find such an anomaly. Moments after
Yaakov is blessed by his father Yitzchak, Esav arrives with food
of his own and presents them as well. We all know how that
turned out - but there we find an unusual expression. The Torah
tells us that Esav took food ובא ל אבו– “and he (Esav) brought
it (the food) to his father” The words ובא ל אבו form a
palindrome! The lesson is that Esav the Rasha only gave when
he could get something back in return. True giving is when there
is no ulterior motive, we do it because it is the right thing to do.
