Introduction

This book and its activities are suitable for HAVO/VWO third-years. The story is based on two social economically different groups in the US of A and their feud.

The book is written from the perspective of a teenage boy, which makes the story appropriate and accessible for the students in their third year of secondary school.

This package contains: 2 lessons to introduce the book; 4 lessons to (briefly) discuss the book; 3 lessons for post-reading and the final assignment

Learning objectives: Improvement of reading skills; Ability to discuss themes and characters in literature; Understanding points of view and differing perspectives; Practicing individual and group work; Ability to present information in front of a group; Ability to write a review; Expansion of vocabulary.

Activities: Silent reading; Teamwork; Individual work; Presenting information; Writing a review; Answering questions in written and oral form; Answering questions regarding the story as well as specific details.

2

Lesson 1 Pre-Reading

Introductory Activity:

The purpose of the Introductory Activity is for students to reflect on different aspects of their own identity.

1 Explain to the students that in this lesson, they define and reflect on their own identity. Students create an artistic representation of their own identity.

2 Write "identity" on the board and ask the students to brainstorm its meanings. 3 Ask each student to create an "Identity Map" which depicts all the components

that make up their own identity, including the varied roles they play. Show students how to create their maps by putting a circle on the board and writing "Me" in the center. Then, draw lines out from the circle and write words such as "loyal," "artist," "daughter," etc. Hand out the ‘Expressing yourself’ worksheet to help them come up with ideas for the map.

4 Divide the class into small groups and ask students to share their maps with each other. Ask them to discuss the following questions: • What 3 words would you choose to best describe yourself? • Why do those words accurately describe you? • What 3 words would your family or friends use to describe you? • How accurate are other's descriptions of you? • What 3 words do you want to describe yourself as 10 years from now?

5 Ask for volunteers from the small groups to share their insights with the class.

Speaking activity;

The purpose of this activity is for students to think about what they want to achieve in the future, and to get to know each other.

Journalism: Ask students to imagine they've just traveled ten years into the future--they're ten years older and wiser. Break students in pairs and ask them to interview one another to find out who they are in ten years; their values, failures, successes, and ambitions.

End the lesson with youtube film about the book.

Lesson 2 Pre-Reading

What’s in a name?

Students will think about how names affect how we think about people.

1. Ask students what they think about the author’s name. What is this person like? Write the ideas on the board.

2. Share with students that the author is Susan Eloise Hinton. She used her initials when publishing the book. Ask students why they think she did this. What actually happened is that her publisher suggested this so that male readers (and reviewers) would not be turned off by a book written by a woman—Hinton decided to continue to use her initials for all her books as a way to separate her public life from her private life.

3. Now have students fill out ‘What’s in a name’ worksheet. They will make predictions about some of the characters in the book based on their names or nicknames. After reading, the class will revisit this worksheet to discuss how many of the characterizations they got right, and what this reveals about our perception of names.

After Activity students get time to start reading.

Lesson 2

What’s in a name?

Pre-reading

During this lesson we are going to get the students to think about prejudices. First we will ask them about the author. Looking at the type of book and the fact that only the initials of the author are given, we think students might think the author is a man.Second, we will have them look at a sheet with the names of the characters on it. Then they will decide in which group the characters fit, judging by just the name. They will also need to think about the names of the groups and what they associate with those names.

When they are finished with these activities, we’ll let them start reading the book.
