As Kenton and Marty Musselman and myself prepare to head off to Synod Assembly at the Koury center in Greensboro May 31-June 1st, I was thinking about the work and ministry of the synod and all that they do that we often forget about.
It’s so easy to think of them as an agency that we just have to give our money to, but it is so much more than that.
Organized in 1803 to help congregations find qualified pastors, the North Carolina Synod unites just under 200 North Carolina congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Each of the ELCA’s 65 synods elects a bishop and a Synod Council. As the synod’s pastor, the bishop oversees the ministry of other pastors and congregations. Our NC Synod bishop is the Rev. Dr. Timothy M. Smith. Together with his staff, the bishop provides support to congregations and leaders.
So how do we at Grace in Thomasville receive this support from the synod?
1. The best example of the synod support you receive is well, my call to serve as your pastor. The synod matched us together because they knew my gifts and your gifts would work well together through the call process. And as a Pastor who is fresh out of seminary the synod provides me with, free continuing education opportunities, a mentor, and a place to go to ask questions when a problem arises.
2. Stewardship, we are enrolling in a Stewardship program, called Stewardship for All Seasons, through the synod to help us grow our giving and think about finances in new and freeing ways, The synod has also met with our council to help us with our mission
and vision and the future of Grace as a vital congregation. And we also had Deacon Schafer consult with us about our Endowment and Giving.
3. Through the work of the synod we are engaged in collaboration with other churches. Most notably this year at Grace we have enjoyed partnering with three other congregations for confirmation classes.
4. Lastly, our ten percent of mission support provides sustainable outreach to disaster victims, like those in NC impacted recently by flooding. The synod helps us as a congregation to use our prophetic voice to reach out to those in need in meaningful ways.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer reminds us that the unity of the Church as the Body of Christ is not a goal to be attained but a fact to be recognized. We do not have to "strive to become the body of Christ." We are the Body of Christ. We are all part of one Body, whether we realize it or not. What happens to one of us affects the whole body whether we realize it or not. The mission of the Church according to this image is not to achieve unity but to act as the unified entity that we are and that is what the synod helps us to do!
If you have questions about the NC Synod please see me, I’d love to help tell the story of the wonderful ministry your gifts make possible.
God is with you all!

JUNE 2019 WORSHIP PARTICIPANTS
God Moments at Grace Lutheran Each month the stewardship committee will be sharing a story about ways God is working at Grace Lutheran.
Where is God in the Roof?
Estelle had picked up boxes of fruit at CCM by herself that they were giving to our sandwich ministry.
It was afternoon she pulled in the handicap lot and had plans to get the cart and wheel it around
and struggle to load these heavy boxes herself. When she saw a group of young strong workers
taking a break from their work.
The workers noticed Estelle, and a young man asked her if she needed any help. The young man lifted
all the boxes out her car, he was God in that moment. He showed up to help her, he did something
unexpected and kind, that was outside of his duty. But then the next day Estelle came back and the
Holy Spirit moved again, when he saw her call he stopped what he was doing again and went out of
his way to help her. God is moving here in unexpected people who show up in unexpected ways to
help us carry out our mission to serve the hungry in the Thomasville community.

Fellow Workers in Christ,
As we are 6 months into 2019, I wanted to take the opportunity to commend each one of you on the progress we have made and continue to make at Grace. I am so proud of our commitments and dedication to each other and to the work of the church.
Church Council is a dedicated group of individuals selected by you to be your voice when decisions are needed. Not only does that include monthly meetings but also called sessions and attending committee meetings they are assigned to. Our proudest accomplishment to date must be working together to develop our mission – Following the example of Christ through service, we are growing together in faith connecting with the community for the sake of God’s Grace. Identifying our core values of fellowship, support, grace, welcome, worship and service will only feed our mission and bring each of you into our work.
Committees here at Grace have become more focused and are working to create their scope and how activities promote our mission. Please be open to any committee chair(s) that ask for your help and thank them for their service:
