Research Overview

Ericsson Confidential | 2020-07-01 | Page 8

The workplace of the future will be designed to focus more on in-person & group collaboration – home is ideal for virtual and individual focus

Emergence of a new ”Helix” workplace model

- A clear pattern of activities which are perceived to be

better supported at home than in the office and vice-

versa. Indicating a shift in the balance of space

priorities.

No big surprises

- Individual work performance is less affected (and

even slightly improved) when working from home.

Group, informal collaboration and activities requiring

specialist equipment show a decline.

Activities that are harder to translate virtually are on the decline

- Such as hosting visitors (-40%-points), informal

social interaction (-34%-points) and, most crucially,

learning from others (-19%-points) all show a drop in

performance.Home Office

Key takeawaysComparison between level of activity support in-office vs. at home

Meet Lucas!He’s an ‘adapter’.

RoleProduct development Team leader

He chooses to go to the hub office 2-3 days a week for in-person get togethers with his team and specific activities that require specialist spaces and equipment.

He is purposeful and mission-focused. He enjoys a blended work-life balance and likes having the choice to work from home regularly.

10

6:30amI start by day early with a daily download from my digital twin on most important news for the day: Weather and headlines, urgent messages, and location of my team (office or home).

7amI join holo-gym class with my best friend then commute into the office.

10amI arrive at the hub and grab a coffee in the cafe. I bumpinto a colleague that I haven’t spoken to for a while. She shares the latest on her projects and agrees to have a virtual catchup next week.

11:30amMy team breaks out into smaller groups on nearby smart touch tables in the co-creation area and we brainstorm for an hour.

12:45pmI receive an Smart App alert that another colleague has seen I’m in at the hub today and invites me to lunch.

6:30pmI end the day catching up and socialising over a beer with other colleagues in the hub coffee bar. In the meantime my digital twin is scheduling meetings for next week with relevant team members based on output from the worksessions today

10:30amMy team meets in a holo-huddle room and plan tasks on the digital whiteboard. One team member is at home and another at a satellite location so they connect via Teams in 360 holographic form.

4pm

I jump into a quiet pod nearby to take private call with my Ericsson appointed counsellor who helps me as a coach, sponsor and mentor all-in-one. They suggest some re-skilling sessions to take over the next month, and doan instant role-play simulation helping to prepare for an upcoming product pitch.

1

2pmI meet my team again for an afternoon session, this time in the prototyping AR lab to test new product ideas.

10:20amI receive an Ericsson Smart App alert that my team huddle is starting in 10mins. I check the huddle location and if everyone is running on time.

Remote working behaviour

Description

The office is the right space at the right time, they can work effectively at home but not for everything.

Main experience driver

To feel more ENERGIZED and get inspired.

Identifiers

Definitions

• Deep focus work• Personal meetings• Team workshops

Attribute

• Purposeful• Organised planner• Mission focused

I’m at my best when

I can choose how and where I work and have complete control over my own work like balance, be that working from home or in the office

• There’s always a purpose to go into the office to work• The office is the destination for when I need to collaborate with my team in person• Coordinate with the team so that we’re in the office at the same time to make the

best use of our time e.g. kick start a project, problem solve or if we are onboardingnew members of the team

• collaborating / working within close proximity of my colleagues is when I do a lot ofmy on-the-job learning

• Where I complete the majority of focus work, there are few distractions meaning I can really concentrate

• I have everything I need to support my work• Although collaboration tools could be better. It’s sometimes hard to explain

something without the use of a physical or virtual whiteboard

Persona:The Adapters

Collaboration is mostly focused on proof onconcept - whiteboard exercise, ideas. Wehave tried collaboration tools online but not the same thing as being in a room - having a pen in hand.
