TAKING CARE OF THE LANDThe crew at 40 Knots are passionate about taking care of the land. Farming traditionally and biodynamically was the way of our grandparents and we are proud to continue on the path that they have set. Since the farm became biodynamic, the grapes are disease free, the wine tastes better and there is no need for irrigation. Combining old world traditions with new world technology, (whether these are technological advances of soil health determination or wine analysis) we collaborate with like-minded businesses that are dedicated to making an environmental difference.

Our philosophy is simple; take care the of the grapes, and

they will take care of the wine. We use a hands-off approach, with little to no intervention. There are no additives in our wine and our 40 Knots customer's often thank us, saying they can drink our wine again and again with no adverse symptoms. We are proud that our 40 Knots wine is vegan and gluten free with absolute minimal sulphites.

40 Knots has one of the biggest ratio's of philanthropy of any private business. Not only are we involved in many community organizations, we are committed to helping those in immediate risk, hiring those community members at risk themselves. We believe that if we take care of our community, they’ll take care of the world.

BiodynamicWe are on a quest to become certified biodynamic. We have followed the practices since new ownership in 2014. The best wine is a result of growing practices, and this practice is in keeping with our environmental commitment.

It has been proven that sound vibrations are an important part of vine health. Italy has been projecting the sounds of opera out into their vines for many years, with the vines closest to the music proving to be the healthiest.

At 40 Knots, our version of this is offered not only to our vines but to our guests as well. If you haven't yet had a chance to partake in one of our popular vineyard terrace Wine Wednesday events throughout the summer, book now before reservations fill up!

40 Knots believes that all of us have the right to love and be loved. This is showcased with our gold medal winning Soleil Rose French Traditional style. The label, "Love is Love", supports the LGBTQ community. We believe that all are equal and we share in the responsibility to support this belief. Even our swallows live with a similar motto. The female and male swallow not only look almost identical, but they also share in responsibilities of the daily chores and protecting their family. Once they mate, they mate for life. This is another quality we give great importance to. We practice loyalty to our community, our family, our friends, and our environment.

Karl KliparchukTry 40 Knots vineyard and Estate Winery if you want to experience the terroir of BC’s Vancouver Island wine.  Biodynamic, use of terracotta amphora and indigenous yeasts bring out the authenticity of their grapes and vines.

THE SWALLOWIf you've ever purchased a bottle of 40 Knots wine from our cellar door, you may have noticed the Northern Rough-Winged Swallow that adorns our Estate label. These swallows are endemic to our area and frequent our vineyard. Each year we celebrate their arrival as they are not only our friends but a part of our biodynamic crew. Swallows will only live in areas that surround biodynamic balance and their presence speaks volumes to our clean, green vineyard practices. Unlike other species of birds, Swallow’s will never harm our grapes and are an excellent bug predator. Next time you're here, perhaps during a guided or self-guided vineyard tour, keep your eyes peeled for swallow birdhouses built to keep the birds safe and give them a home to return to every year.

WINEMAKERHow does a Saskatchewan farm kid end up making wine? To tell the truth, I am still not sure. I will keep doing it until I find out.

Growing up on a farm in the Prairies, there were a lot of opportunities to learn about farming. We brought with us a long tradition of farming from our Irish heritage. We farmed without the aid of chemicals, or synthetic aids. We didn’t just grow wheat or cereal grains, we grew huge gardens, fruits, and berries. We lived off the land by following tried and true methods such as crop rotation, complementary crops,

tillage, manure, and a cautious read of the farmer’s almanac. There are lots of new names for this type of farming, however it is about getting back to our roots and farming naturally. We rely on knowledge of our environment, soils, and crop requirements, while paying attention to our surroundings that send us messages such as birds, animals, bugs, worms and all the things that make our planet habitable. Passed down through our generations, this farming is not new and it isn’t the easy method.

Falling in love with the land and growing are basic necessities to being a farmer. I personally always felt that the true satisfaction comes from the end product. I felt that if I could grow the wheat, make the flour and bake the bread, I would feel much more satisfied with the effort. That I would feel much more whole as I looked the customer in the eye and handed them a product I was very proud of, and that was of great quality. That was a very unrealistic dream at the time as a farm kid in Saskatchewan.

Now fast forwarding 25 years…I am a passionate enofile, loving the art of winemaking, and I love farming. Both my wife Brenda and I made a decision to pursue this direction in our life. We wanted to share farming with our children and grandchildren. We headed out in the direction to find the perfect terrior. I am infatuated with aromatic white wines, great sparkling, and Pinot Noir. Loving the West Coast and Vancouver Island, we had

luck in finding the perfect place to assert our passions.

Yes, of course, this has been a quarter century of studying winemaking and viticulture by book, visits, and seminars, but originally I was only a wine geek. Applying and reverting to traditional winemaking methods has continued to challenge me. I have had some great mentors to help me along the way. And still today, I am privileged to have a very astute winemaker look over my shoulder and advise me.

What is my approach to winemaking?Grow exceptional crops. The earth has been growing grapes for a very long time without the aid of synthetic fertilizers and sprays. Use clean chemical free crops, allowing the grapes to ripen on the vine - this will bring you most of the way to a great wine. Then, hand select, hand harvest, and utilize the traditional methods of native yeast fermentations. Finally, the use of extended skin macerations, and terracotta clay vessels, the use of oak from Burgundy, and no filters or intervention.

I will continue to learn about enology until, well until I am gone—there is so much more to learn. What I do know and live by, is to let grapes become the wine they are intended to become.

— Layne Craig

THE CREWBoth Layne and his wife had been in the corporate world for many years and were looking for a change in lifestyle, one that brought them back to their original roots of farming.

Early in 2014, Layne came upon a winery in Comox for sale called 40 Knots. The moment Layne and Brenda stepped on the property, they knew this was home. It just felt right, and by that summer, they were the new owners.

A 4-generation family operation, 40 Knots has big plans for the future. Teaching their children and grandchildren the time honoured traditions of their farming past, it is a truly fulfilling endeavour for their family, and a labour of love.

In fact, our climate is so moderate, there are days when you can ski, golf, hike our rain forest and swim at the beach all in one day.

Plan free time — Plan an adventurePicture yourself carving down an alpine ski run with an ocean view, Nordic skiing through an ancient forest, or scuba diving in crystal clear waters. You can mountain bike or hike along one of the many river systems in the area, paddle the many kilometers of stunning shorelines or tee off at one of many scenic golf courses. If festivals are the kind of fun you are looking for, the local Comox Valley festivals take place throughout the year, and celebrate everything from music and shellfish, to fine art and aviation.

Enjoy a day of arts and culture at one of the many museums, art galleries, and artists’ studios and explore our boutique shops boasting one of a kind local items.

Plan downtime — Go ahead, pamper yourselfEnjoy a day at the spa and indulge in 40 Knot’s VinoSpa treatments. Take in a yoga class. Meditate in the rainforest. Float down our rivers, curl up on a beach with your favorite book. Whichever you choose, the Comox Valley will rejuvenate you.

CAPTURING MOMENTSWith access to many talented photographers with experience shooting special occasions, weddings, portraitures and commercial photography, we’re able to recommend what you need to capture your event on Vancouver Island.

Karen Mckinnon is one of our faves. She has a plethora of photography and community awards under her belt, and years of experience in photojournalism, wedding, portraiture and commercial photography. However, her true definition of success continues to be the connection formed with her clients & opportunity to delve into beauty; both in people, and in nature.

GAMAY NOIR

Vibrant fruit notes balanced with subtle neutral

oak, the perfect summer red.

Rick Vansickle“This is the first time I have tried the wines at this Comox winery and I was impressed. Wines crafted there are a reflection of the windswept, sun-soaked climate of the region.” Scored two wines 90.

VINOSPANaturally BeautifulExperts the world over believe skin products that utilize the properties contained within grapes improve blood circulation, reduce wrinkles and revitalize skin by restoring collagen and elastic fibers. We are proud to introduce our new skin care product-line, VinoSpa, manufactured right here at our vineyard!

VinoSpa showcases the incredible nutrient base from our natural grapes. Utilizing the lees, pips, skins and wine, our VinoSpa products contain high levels of polyphenols, procyanidols and antocyanosides, proven to exert more antioxidants or anti-free radicals than even Vitamin E.

Other benefits include clearing blemished skin, soothing the nervous system and building up the immune system.

Each ingredient in VinoSpa has been carefully screened to ensure it is of the highest quality and health benefit. We invite you to try our VinoSpa products and see the difference for yourself.

Granddaughters Ruby, Kadence and Halo are the faces of VinoSpa. Just as each of our precious girls have differing personalities, to do the products that are named after them.

Spa treatments available.

Kadence RoseHer beauty is her kindness and thoughtfulness. Her artist outlet is her photography and is often capturing breathtaking images for social media.

Halo Lily BluHalo’s beauty is one with nature. She is a free spirit. She can often be seen chatting it up with the chickens and geese, running with Ziggy, helping Papa with chores, and adventuring in the vineyard.

Ruby MoonRuby’s beauty is her strength. She is deliberate in all she does. Although the youngest in the family, Ruby insists her age not get in the way of her ambitions. There is no doubt that older brother Jack has had some influence, as fear is just not in her vocabulary.
