Whether you’re a well-organised Christmas shopper, planning menus and gift lists

months in advance, or the kind that fi nds themselves in a frenzy on Christmas Eve, we’ve got all your needs covered. From matching wines to your Christmas fare, no matter if you’re going budget or blow-out, or choosing a gift to impress your father in-law, we’re here to help and take the hassle out of your festive celebrations.

This time of year is all about spending time with family and friends, and you

know you’ve had a great Christmas when you’re more relaxed and perhaps a little bit heavier than you were in November. With this in mind, we think there’s no better way to greet Christmas morning than will a glass of bubbles, whether you’re going with the glitz of Champagne from producers like Krug or bargain bubbles, like our Panel Pick, Cave de Lugny Crémant de Bourgogne.

If your Christmas spread heads down the seafood path, then chilled, minerally whites such as Blind River Sauvignon Blanc or Heggies

Vineyard Riesling will make the perfect accompaniment. We’ve also got a treasure trove of reds to enjoy with a more traditional feast, including sparkling Shiraz for Turkey and Pinot Noir for roast pork. Our Panel Pick and ultimate red this Christmas is Penfolds Bin 8 Cabernet Shiraz. Think of it as a mini Bin 389, with more plush fruit and soft integrated tannins. Plus, there’s stickies for your plum pudding, craft beers for blazing hot days and top shelf spirits to cap off the night. Whatever your plans and whatever your budget, let us help make your Christmas truly memorable.

From all of us here at Vintage Cellars, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Cheers,

Lana

Pierre Gimonnet Belles Années Premier Cru Champagne NV

Single bottle $56.24

Tyson Stelzer is Australia’s trusted expert on Champagne. After being intimately involved in the region and the wines

Tyson produced the fi rst edition of ‘The Champagne Guide’ in 2011. We were delighted to see that Tyson shares our good taste, naming one of our exclusive imports, Pierre Gimonnet, “Grower Producer of the Year”. Tyson couldn’t speak highly enough about the wines:- “It’s time to make public the best kept secret of champagne in Australia this year. One of the fi nest grower producers is lurking on chain store shelves at laughable prices. All things considered, wine-for-wine, you could precisely double the price of every Pierre Gimonnet wine and they would still hold their own alongside virtually every other champagne. But this is not the reason that Pierre Gimonnet is The Champagne Guide 2011 Grower Producer of the Year, nor is this why I have recommended these wines to my mates more often than any other champagne this year.”

This is before Tyson goes on to describe the Belles Années NV, “when demand for Gimonnet’s non-

vintage out-stripped the capabilities of its vineyards in Cuis, the company came up with something quite different and quite clever. This is a two vintage blend of reserve wines only, from grand cru (three quarters) and premier cru villages, a style designed to be less fresh and more polished. Chalky soils and plenty of time on lees have produced a dancing structure which rises on the palate. It has great drive and precision, culminating in lingering, splashing minerality.” Outside of Champagne, Burgundy produces excellent sparkling wines including this Blanc de Blancs from Cave de Lugny. It has a soft effervescence, is creamy and rich showing good complexity. A full, crisp style, exhibiting quality, cool climate Chardonnay fruit. It’s a steal and delivers much more than your average $20 Aussie sparkling.

Oakridge Estate Yarra Valley

Chardonnay 2010

$3299each across any dozen

Single bottle $41.24We’ve long admired the work of Dave Bicknell as we saw him drag Oakridge Estate out of long dark period to emerge as one of our fi nest producers. Dave’s wine set the benchmark for progressive Yarra Valley wines and when it comes to Chardonnay, it seems Oakridge really excel. The Estate Chardonnay is fi ne, textural with subtle splash of cashew oak, tropical fruit and citrus fl avours, supported by a sublime structure and length. Wow, what a ripper. Seriously get some, you won’t be disappointed.

Ballewindi Vineyard Mornington Peninsula

Pinot Noir 2010

$2199each across any dozen

Single bottle $27.49This is the third vintage of this single-vineyard Mornington Peninsula Pinot made exclusively for us by Sandro Mosele from Kooyong, and it’s a cracker. Sandro is well known for his tireless and meticulous attention to detail, and can add another feather to his bow, with Kooyong being named James Halliday’s ‘2012 Winery of the Year’. The 2010 vintage is tightly structured, driven by texture and balance with raspberry, cherry notes with an underlying minerality. What takes this wine from good to great is loads of bright and juicy red fruits.

Château La Rame Sainte-Croix-du-Mont

Tradition 375ml

$1599each across any dozen

Single bottle $19.99Botrytis stickies are a Christmas favourite and we have been searching for a quality Bordeaux style at the right price. Our search led us across the Garonne river from Sauternes and Barsac to the underrated appellation of Sainte Croix du Mont. We were impressed by the Château La Rame’s blend of 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are hand-picked over several passes to ensure only the ripest most botrytis affected grapes are selected. We loved the hints of hazelnut and honey on the nose. What most impressed was the sweet and luscious palate balanced by a gentle touch of acidity on the fi nish.

Blind River Marlborough

Sauvignon Blanc 2011

$1799each across any dozen

Single bottle $22.49We discovered this small, family-run winery several years ago on a buying trip through New Zealand and were blown away by their wines, in particular the Sauvignon Blanc. The fruit is pure and restrained, with a small portion of barrel ferment adding texture and weight to the lengthy palate. It’s also great example of the mineral complexity that comes out of Marlborough’s Awatere Valley. You’d be hard pressed to fi nd a fi ner example of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

The Cabernet Shiraz blend is a classic Australian style that has fallen out of fashion in recent years as winemakers have turned to traditional French blends of Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz Grenache. Penfolds has always championed this style most notably with the classic Penfolds Bin 389. First produced in 2003, Bin 8, has been given its number because it is aged in older oak barrels originally used for Bin 128, Bin 28 and Bin 389. Sourced from the South Australian regions of Barossa, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra this is a traditional Penfolds wine that is greater than the sum of its parts. Ripe balanced fruit fl avours are supported by the softly integrated aged oak resulting in a silky smooth red wine. Think of it as a mini Bin 389. There’s no better time than Christmas to turn to trusted names, and there’s no one bigger than Penfolds.

Never has Australia been more spoilt for Champagne than we will be this Christmas. An ever-escalating diversity of styles have landed on our shores this year, from the smallest growers to the largest houses. And our buoyant currency

has made them more affordable than ever. There’s a more important reason why Champagne is the tipple of choice this silly season. The fi nest vintage of the past decade was 2002, producing refi ned and long-lived vintage Champagnes that are on the shelves right now.

On the northern slopes of the Montagne de Reims in the heart of Champagne lies the romantic little village of Chigny-les-Roses. It’s renowned for the roses which line its quaint streets and premier cru vineyards but its pure and refi ned

Champagnes are its true claim to fame. The young Gilles Dumangin is the hardest worker in Chigny-les-Roses and the refi nement of his J. Dumangin & Fils Champagnes is testament to his self-confessed love affair with his wine press. His Extra Brut NV is made with less than two grams of sweetness per bottle, less than one-eighth of a teaspoon of sugar in a cup of coffee, making for a beautifully fresh and mineral style. Inspired by his frequent travels through Asia, it’s perfect with sushi and sashimi. Champagne’s recent trend toward ever-lower dosage is to be applauded in a region notorious for smothering inferior fruit with too much sugar. Wines like Dumangin Extra Brut represent a brand new day in Champagne, where fruit purity is prized over sweetness. Raise a glass to celebrate a newfound diversity of Champagne this Christmas!

Arras Brut Elite Sparkling NV

House of Arras sounds French and it would be easy to mistake this Brut Elite for a NV

Champagne. Arras winemaker Ed Carr has spent the last 15 years on a quest to produce a world class sparkling. With this wine, we considered it – mission accomplished!

Vanilla, nougat and exotic spices on the nose, followed by a palate bursting with

lychee, truffl e and cinnamon fl avours, this is a complex, elegant wine. Australian sparkling has come a long way in the past decade, but this is a wine that really excites us.

When the occasion and budget don’t call for the glitz of Champagne, keep the sparkle alive with a host of alternatives from different shores. The fi nesse and

structure of sparkling wine is derived from the acidity of grapes grown in cool places. Locally, look to the southerly latitudes of Tasmania or New Zealand, or upward to the higher altitude reaches of the Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley and Tumbarumba. France offers affordable alternatives to Champagne, too, from the Loire Valley. Spanish Cava and Italian Prosecco have recently set new sales records worldwide, emerging as the Champagne substitutes of choice for these economic times.

Whether you’re splurging or quaffi ng, there are some simple ways to enhance your fi zz. Serving it at fridge temperature or straight out of an ice bucket will only shut

down its fl avours and emphasise its tart acidity. Pull the bottle out half an hour before your guests arrive and it will be just right to kick-off proceedings.

In 1982 the Tessari family stopped taking their grapes to the local wine

We are glad they did. Our tasting panel thought the 2010 Suavia Soave to be an intriguing European white.

Pinot Gris 2010

$1699each across any dozen

Single bottle $21.24

When we look back at the current era in years to come, we will marvel at what a spectacular time it was for white wines. By any measure, Chardonnay has led the

charge in taking Australian wine to the next level.

With Australia and New Zealand’s Riesling and Sauvignon, refi nement is the pursuit, as makers strive for purity of citrus expression and mineral texture. In

the fi nest vineyards, diligence has avoided underripe fl avours of asparagus and cut grass on one extreme and overripe, sweet tropical characters on the other. In the winery, Sauvignon and its blends with Semillon have discovered new worlds of texture and complexity through experimentation with wild yeast fermentation and oak barrels.Relative newcomers like Pinot Gris and Viognier are increasingly fi nding their feet as vineyards mature and winemakers gain experience in producing wines that capture the personalities of these unique varieties.

Don’t wait for the benefi t of hindsight to appreciate this magical era of white wine. It’s summertime, pour yourself a large glass, sit back and marvel!.

With such diversity of red wine styles on hand right now, we’ve never enjoyed greater choice. We’ve spent a decade exploring and adopting the cuisines of the world and now we’re doing the same with our wines,

with an ever-greater thirst for the obscure varieties of far shores and their local interpretations. A decade ago, Nebbiolo, Zinfandel, Tempranillo and Sangiovese were foreign strangers. Now they’re our best mates. In the midst of our fascination with all things exotic, let’s not forget the variety that Australia still makes better than any other. Shiraz deserves a place on our country’s coat of arms because it produces wonderfully diverse expressions from the Hunter Valley to Margaret River and everywhere in between. Its blends with Cabernet Sauvignon are unique in the wine world and responsible for some of Australia’s most iconic and long-lived wines.

Cabernet is the most underrated variety in Australia right now. Margaret River, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale are busy churning out the fi nest renditions this country has ever seen and yet they’re passed by as

unpopular. Pop them in your cellar and we’ll see who’s the popular one in a few years time!

And then there’s pinot. The most beguiling grape in all the world has fi nally found its mojo in Australia and New Zealand, attaining that magical balance of quality, affordability and volume. Make the most of it!

Single bottle $41.24This wine captures the distinct brand of Cabernet Sauvignon only Coonawarra can produce. Deliciously layered with ripe plum and blackcurrant fruit, a dash of mint and earthy undertone. Fine tannins, some sweet, vanillan oak and a generous fi nish.

Henschke Keyneton Euphonium Barossa Red

Blend 2008

$3499each across any dozen

Abel’s Tempest TasmaniaPinot Noir 2010

$2799each across any dozen

A classy Pinot from Tassie with all the trademark varietal cues on display.

Cherry, raspberry and plum fruit, layered with spice and just a pinch of earthy forest fl oor. The balance of fruit and oak is tied together by mouth watering acidity and fi ne tannins. It’s silky, luscious and quite frankly, irresistible. Great winemaking skills on display from young gun and Tassie local, Anna Pooley. You’ve defi nitely caught our attention.

Peregrine Central Otago

Pinot Noir 2009

$3999each across any dozen

Single bottle $49.99With no shortage of hype around Central Otago, Greg Hay’s Peregrine is a refreshing antidote. We’ve been importing and promoting Greg’s wines since 2005 under both Peregrine and Saddleback labels so we were as proud as can be when Peregrine’s 2009 Pinot Noir picked up three trophies including the most prestigious Wine of Show award at the Air NZ Wine Awards last year. Chair of judges Steve Smith (MW) said the Peregrine Central Otago Pinot Noir 2009 was “the fi nest example of the fi nest red wine variety in this country.”

Podere Ruggeri Corsini Langhe Nebbiolo 2009

$2999each across any dozen

Single bottle $37.49This Nebbiolo hales from Langhe in Piedmont and comes without the price tag associated with Barolo and Barbaresco. A truly lovely wine with a decadent nose of black and maraschino cherries. The palate is incredibly balanced and has real, yet subtle fl avours of liqueur plum chocolates, cooked cherries and just a hint of vanilla. A completely awesome wine - delicious and satisfying. Take our word for it, you’ll fall in love with this at fi rst sip.

John Duval Entity Barossa Shiraz 2009

$3999each across any dozen

Single bottle $49.99John may have made his name at Penfolds, as the man behind Grange for almost 30 years, but it’s his work under his own label that really excites us. In true Barossa style, the John Duval Entity Shiraz balances heavily concentrated fruits with elegance and winemaking fi nesse. The intensity, fi ne tannic structure and French oak infl uence make the Entity an exciting wine to visit now, while still displaying excellent cellaring potential. The next 15 years will only bless this wine with more depth if cellared well.

d’Arenberg Dead Arm McLaren Vale Shiraz 2008

$5999each across any dozen

Single bottle $74.99d’Arenberg’s fl agship wine is also a fl ag bearer for the region. Beyond an array of dark fruits, lie intriguing notes of game, smoked meats, truffl e and green pepper. There’s chocolate and earthiness so there’s no mistaking the wine’s origin, with depth and complexity that few from McLaren Vale can measure up to.

Glaetzer Amon-Ra Barossa Valley

Shiraz 2009

$7999each across any dozen

Single bottle $99.99From Ben and Colin’s favoured Ebenezer vineyards with yields below a tonne per acre. Fruit from this northern sub-region goes into several of the Barossa’s most famous Shiraz wines (Peter Lehmann Stonewell, Penfolds Grange, E&E Black Pepper Shiraz, Torbreck Run Rig) and the Amon-Ra can certainly go punch for punch with the best of them. Yes - it’s deep and concentrated with lovely new oak but it never goes into the jammy spectrum. The wine keeps its dignity with lovely balance and a touch of savoury spice behind walls of voluptuous dark fruits.18

The heaving smorgasbord of Christmas delights is the hardest thing with which to match a single wine. Or it would be if it weren’t for Australia’s unique answer. Sparkling Shiraz is a turkey’s best friend, it loves roast

chicken and it will happily stick around when red meats come out to play. When the oysters and prawns have fi nished doing their thing with Champagne, hold on to your fl ute and let the red fi zz fl ow!

When it’s time for Christmas sweets there’s only one rule to remember and that is to keep the wine sweeter than the food or it will taste dry. With lightly sweet desserts of summer fruits, reach for a subtly sweet style

like Moscato or Zibibbo. When the pace steps up to fruit mince pie and Christmas pudding intensity, ramp the wine up to a Botrytis Semillon or a fortifi ed wine like Muscat, Tokay or Port.

Sweet wines are the one place where you can never overdo the chill, short of freezing the bottle altogether! Moscato is at its refreshing best after a stern chill in the freezer. Even Aussie fortifi eds are in a happy place

straight out of the fridge, especially on a sunny Christmas Day!

Little Creatures Pint Size Gift Pack 4x568ml This exciting Little Creatures pint bottle gift pack includes some of the old favourites together with the ‘New’ single batch release aptly named ‘The Big Dipper’, a American Style Double India Pale Ale. Taking its name from one of the most famous 7 star constellations the Little Creatures guys were ‘like a bunch of kids in a hop fl avoured candy store’ when they created their 7 hop variety beer. The hops all work together to create an amazing citrus/tropical packed brew which dances across the palate to fi nish with an enduring smooth bitterness – A must buy for any beer lover!

Mountain Goat Rare Breed India Pale Ale Bottle 640ml

“Mountain Goat Rare Breed IPA is one where the hops really come into focus. IPA’s are a very old style of beer dating back to the 1800’s when the colonial Brits succeeded in fi nding a way to keep their Pale Ales fresh from the long journey from the motherland to India. The secret was hops. Lots of them. They’re a natural preservative, you see, so they keep beer fresher for longer. It’s big, fruity and bitter. Not for the faint-hearted. And it will run out - it’s a Rare Breed afterall...We hope you enjoy.”Cheers, Dave Bonighton,Co-Founder, Chief Brewer - Mountain Goat Brewery
