COURSEDESCRIPTION:ThiscourseisasurveyofthehistoryofIslamiccivilization.Inthiscourse,wewillstudysocial,economic,andculturalaspectsofthehistoryoftheMiddleandNearEastregion,betweenthesixthandfifteenthcenturies.Thetreatmentofthesubjectwillberoughlychronological,thoughthemessuchaslaw,science,andphilosophywillrecurthroughoutthecourse.Inadditiontolectures,thecoursewillheavilydrawupondiscussionsessions,whichwillgivestudentsahands-onapproachtohistory.Inthesesessions,wewilldiscussindetailvarioushistoricalproblemspresentedinthetextandlectures.Wewillalsoseedifferenttypesofhistoricalevidenceandlearnhowtheycanbeusedforhistoricalanalysis.COURSEOBJECTIVES:Uponsuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,studentswillbeableto:-nameandidentifyindividuals,events,themes,andissuesofmajorimportanceinthehistoryofIslamiccivilization,-demonstrateabasiclevelofcompetenceindifferentiatingthemajorperiodsofthehistoryofIslamiccivilizationandthesignificanceofhistoricalcontext,-recognizetheimportanceofcauseandeffectinhistory,anddiscussthesignificanceofchangeandcontinuityovertime,-developanunderstandingtowardtheuseofhistoricalevidencebyhistoriansanddisplaysomefamiliaritytowarddifferenttypesofevidence,-criticallyanalyzehistoricalevidenceandarticulateasynthesiswithathesis.
