What are the long and short term effects of colonization?
To establish a colony To settle a colony
What is a colony?A group of people who leave their native
country to form a settlement in a new land
This new settlement is still connected to the native country
• Think back to what you’ve learned in the past. What do you remember learning about the colonization of the United States?
• Turn to the person next to you and share what you remember
• As we share as a class, be sure to write down at leasttwo things you remember in your notes!
Just as colonization happened in the United States, it happened in Africa as well

colonies close byWrite down at least two challenges in your
notes!
• POLITICALLY
• African countries were not able to create their own national governments while under colony rule
• When countries gained their independence, their governments were new and had lots to learn about ruling a nation
• ECONOMICALLY
• Money earned from trade, agriculture, and natural resources were given to the ruling country
• When countries gained their independence, they struggled to gain economic stability (Somalia)
• SOCIALLY
• Under colony rule, the borders that were drawn often ignored human geography.
• Sometimes the borders separated members of one ethic group, and other times borders grouped people together that did not get along.
In order to gain independence, many colonies had to fight against their ruling country for freedom
Sometimes, once independence was won, fights among the ethnic groups would begin, causing tension and many problems for the newly developing nation
