Drake was fighting the Spanish in the Atlantic when….A storm hits the colony just as Drake pulls into port.

Lane’s group wants to go home and leave the settlement.

The Lost Colony, John White Colony

1587 -  The White Colony arrived at Roanoke Island on July 22, led by John White who had been on all 3 trips to Roanoke Island.

On August 18, 1587,Virginia Dare was the firstEuropean Christian to be

bornin America.  Her mother,Eleanor Dare, was thedaughter of John White,

thegovernor of what became

the“Lost Colony” of

RoanokeIsland.

“Biting the hand that feeds you”

1. Relations between the Natives & colonists were poor.

2. They depended on the Natives for food but a summer drought and harsh winter left the Natives caring for their own.

3. Conflict between the cultures turned critical in the spring

4. The colony sent John White back to England on August 27th to get needed supplies.

Spain and England go to War !

Attack of the Spanish Armada in 1588 prevented John White from returning until 1590.

John White FINALLY Returns

On August 1590, White returned to Roanoke Island and the colony was gone.

White found the letters CRO etched in a tree and found CROATOAN etched in a tree near the entrance to the fort.

White found no cross etched in the tree signifying danger

The fort was overgrown with grass and weeds.
