4 What’s Up

As the EURO 2012 football champion-ships loom ever closer, the one ques-tion on everyone’s lips is: Will the Kyiv stadium be ready? Of course,

we were hoping this massive event would give us much more than new stadiums, and that the country’s infrastructure, airports, hotel of-ferings, and many other aspects would undergo serious upgrades. But now, all we’re hoping for is world-class stadiums, completed. So it was very exciting for us here at What’s On when we were invited, as Ukraine’s only ‘independent’ media, for an exclusive look around Kyiv’s Olympic sta-dium under construction. While from a distance the Olympic Stadium looks like a construction site a long way from comple-tion, one gets a completely different impression up close. The fi rst thing one notices when enter-ing the construction site is a fl urry of activity: there are a lot of men, and all of them are working. “There are 1,800 men working on the site every day,” Vladimir Geninson, Olympic NSC Opera-tions Director, says.

Getting ThereAnd there is a lot already completed: a glass-fronted area we’re told will host retail outlets, a restaurant and a fi tness club are fi nished bar the fi tting, and there’s large groups of men working on the paved areas in front of the stadium. Al-most immediately, one gets a feeling that the sta-dium is far closer to completion than most people think. And this is only from the outside. What we really want to see is the inside. There’s a sense of rapidly growing excitement walking through the tunnel, as a huge crane and other construction devices come into view. With a little imagination (and surprisingly, only a little) one can feel oneself an international football star walking out to start the fi nal in a beautiful sta-dium in front of a roaring crowd.Inside, like out, there are fl urries of activity tak-ing place in various parts of the ground. Men are working, and they’re getting things done. From fi rst glance there is no doubt there is a lot still to

be done, but the good news is, it’s getting done. The fi rst thing Geninson wishes to highlight are the rings of cables that will support the roof. They’re up, in place, and waiting for the rest. “Only a few days ago, all this was on the ground,” he says, “but now it’s up and ready to take the roof, which will start to be put in place any day now.”There are two sections of the concrete tiers that will be used to support the seating still missing, but again, there are crowds of men working on it, and it’s clear it’s going to get done. “The stadium will be ready on time,” Galina Kovalevska, Mar-keting Manager at the stadium, says emphati-cally. “Whether it offi cially opens on time or not will be a political decision.”

Up and InsideHaving had a good look at the interior of the stadium from pitch level, and being particularly impressed by the humungous crane that’s been used to put the roof support cables in place, it’s time to take a look a little higher up. Walking up the seating tiers, one gets the sense of this stadium completed, and it’s going to be impres-

sive. Seating just short of 70,000, it’s going to be an excellent host for the EURO 2012 fi nal. One thing Galina and Vladimir are very keen to show is the corporate zone, so after climbing to the top of the seating level, it’s time to take an exclusive look at the skyboxes and corporate hospitality options.Just before we enter the corporate area, however, Vladimir takes time to show one of the refresh-ment booths. “Everything will be done by card,” he explains. “You can buy a card when you buy your ticket, and there will be machines in which you can top it up all over the stadium. When buying food or drink in the ground, all the serv-ers have to do is swipe the card. This will make service fast and effi cient, and eliminate the pos-sibility of theft.”We enter the corporate zone. Nearing comple-tion, it’s clear the skyboxes are going to be im-pressive. Hosting up to 24 people, each will have full hospitality facilities and, of course, an ex-cellent view of the pitch. The Presidential box is particularly impressive: sitting right in the cen-tre of the stadium it offers the best view, has pri-vate lifts to take one there from the VIP parking

AND VERY IMPORTANTLY FOR WHAT’S ON, THE

CITY WILL NOW HAVE A VENUE BIG ENOUGH TO

HOST THE WORLD’S TOP BANDS, AND SO NOW

WE’RE HOPING KYIV MIGHT BE ADDED TO

directly below, and offers full catering services. In addition to the skyboxes, the new stadium will offer full corporate hospitality services including conferences and banqueting. As with everywhere we’ve seen, there is a plethora of activity going on around us as crowds of men lay in cable, erect ventilations ducting, lay fl oors, fi t glass, and just about everything else you can imagine.

Getting it Done! The area is impressive, and one can tell, even in this state of construction, once completed corpo-rate facilities at Kyiv’s Olympic Stadium are going to be world class.Exiting the stadium close to Hotel Sport, and that contentious shopping mall, the construc-tion of which has ceased on the instructions of UEFA until after 2012.

That aside, on this side of the stadium is a large plaza for entry to the stadium, and again, there are men working everywhere. But how are Vladimir and Galina so sure they will get everything done on time? Vladimir explains: “We’ve introduced a rewards scheme. Each individual is given a tar-get to complete. If he completes it he gets paid the agreed amount, if he does not he gets paid less, and if he completes more he gets paid more.”It’s a simple ruse, but it certainly seems to be working because every single man in sight is do-ing just that – working! And that’s quite unusual on a Ukrainian construction site. And it will not only be used to host EURO 2012, but other events as well (Galina even hints at a possible Olympic bid sometime in the future). And very importantly for What’s On, the city will now have a venue big enough to host the world’s top bands, and so now we’re hoping Kyiv might be added to the tour list of such bands as U2, REM and, who knows, maybe even the Stones. From this visit, it’s clear to see that upon comple-tion, Ukraine is going to have a stadium it can be proud of. Let’s hope it’s the fi rst of many such things!

THERE’S A SENSE OF RAPIDLY GROWING EXCITEMENT WALKING THROUGH THE TUNNEL, AS A HUGE CRANE AND OTHER CONSTRUCTION DEVICES COME INTO VIEW. WITH A LITTLE IMAGINATION (AND SURPRISINGLY, ONLY A LITTLE) ONE CAN FEEL ONESELF AN INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL STAR WALKING OUT TO START THE FINAL IN A BEAUTIFUL STADIUM IN FRONT OF A ROARING CROWD

This Week Theatre and Classical Music 15–21 April 20118

Palm Sunday ConcertNational Philharmonics (Volodymyrsky Uzviz 2)17 April at 19.00Kyiv Soloists National Chamber Ensemble have prepared a very special evening of classical music on the eve of the Easter holiday. On Palm Sunday, they will perform works by Haydn and Pergolezi. According to old tradition, theatres and operet-tas would be closed for the Holy Week before Easter, with only so-called Sacred Concerts featuring religious music permit-ted. In support of this tradition, Kyiv Soloists - along with the Radist children’s choir – will perform Seven Words of Christ on the Cross and Stabat Mater, offering music written to bring harmony to human souls and thoughts. Tickets 20-70 hrv. For more information call 234-5031

French SpringConcert of French Classical Music, National Opera Theatre of Ukraine (Volodymyrska 50)19 April at 19.00Showing off the best and most recent in French visual arts, cinema, literature and music, it almost seems as though part of France has made its way to Kyiv, and this particular concert offers residents of our city the opportunity to get in touch with a little bit of French culture. The concert will present music by one of France’s most prominent composers, Claude Debussy, who may be seen as a representative of the late romanticism and early modernism epoch, but whose contributions to the world of music in the 20th century will not soon be forgotten. And with performances by Denis Pascal and Sonya Suldina, both winners of various international competi-tions, this concert promises to be a leisurely stroll through the fi elds of romance for all classical music lovers.Tickets are 20 – 100hrv. For more information call 587-7490.

Warmly Welcomed, Even at FuneralsGoran Bregovic and the Wedding and Funeral Band (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Balkan/pop), Palace Ukraine(V Vasylkivska 103)20 April at 19.00Famous Serbian composer, musician, and ambassador of Balkan culture, Goran Bregovic is coming to Kyiv this spring with his inimitable Wedding and Funeral Band. Writing mu-sic for movies directed by genius Emir Kosturica, Bregovic soon started receiving world recognition for his talent. Even-tually, he became so successful that he began touring the world, bringing the chaotic, yet exciting Balkan gypsy-style of music to all corners of the world. Tickets are 180 – 2250hrv. For more information call 247−2444.

Second Go RoundGuano Apes (Germany, alternative metal), Alto Expo Center (Moskovskiy Pr 11a)19 April at 19.00With the release of their “best of” album, Planet of the Apes, this female-fronted alternative rock quartet decided that a small hiatus from music was required, so after their fi nal tour in February 2005, the band broke up. There was reason enough to get back together, however, as their fi rst albums were very well received and after four years to think about the important things in life, Guano Apes returned to the stage in 2009. It was then that Ukraine had its fi rst taste of this rather strangely-named band, and fulfi lling their prom-ise to return, they’ll be here very soon.Tickets are 290 – 450hrv. For more information call 537-3700.

How has M 17 been so fortunate? A year ago, this new gallery opened its doors to the public with an exhibition by Achille Bonito Oliva, founder of the popular movement, and having promised to return, he has done just that! A selection of 75 pieces from the famous MART museum in Italy will be on show for the Kyiv artistic scene, and supported by the Italian Institute in Kyiv, this exhibition looks to be an outstanding event. Long May She LiveA Tribute to Queen: Reliving the Wembley 1986 Concert, MasQuerade , Sullivan Room (Prorizna 8) 15 April at 19.00If there’s one thing that unites Kyivites, it’s a shared love for the music of Queen and fl am-boyant frontman Freddie Mercury. This is an adoration that transcends generational lines, as one can overhear people normally outside of the rock ‘n’ rolling age bracket going into paroxysms of wonder at Mercury’s performance of “Barce-lona.” This should be a real treat for fans who were unable to see the original Queen line-up or its pale substitute, with Paul Rodgers failing to supplant the beloved Mercury. This time, Mas-Querade will be heating up the stage, perform-ing Queen’s solid-platinum hits, from “Tie Your Mother Down” to “We Are the Champions.” Tickets are 50 – 60hrv. 12 Kyiv Celebs

T he artist started playing music back in 1998 while living in Donetsk. The crucial moment in his career came after four years of playing in clubs. “I went to Kyiv and, fortu-nately, found a job any musician could only dream about.

Being a composer in a good studio opens lots of doors. I’ve worked with TV channels, radio shows and many popular artists.” The hard work helped Eugene to understand the fundamentals of how show business works here, as well as to make some very important con-nections. It all led to his opening his own recording studio, Major Music Box, which is source of pride for him. “The studio we are now sitting in is the result of my work. I’ve created it two years ago and since then it’s working perfectly. Among the most recent projects we just finished are the Maneken’s second album - Soulmate Sublime - and Jamala’s debut album For Every Heart. The latest innovation is the web camera I’ve installed, so that anyone can see what’s happen-ing in the studio in real time,” notes the Maneken. The latest Manek-en achievements speak for themselves, especially the recent release of Jamala’s album. But what’s the connection between Jamala and the Maneken? Answering this one, Eugene says: “Jamala is like a soulmate to me. We met years ago, when she recorded the vocals for one of the songs from my first album. After her victory at New Wave, she came to me, saying that she was ready to record an album. Of course, I agreed to be her sound producer. We wrote all of the ar-rangements for her melodies together. Sometimes I had to insist on doing more “structured” songs, as we had everything we needed, had we wanted to do a pure jazz album, with marvelous improvisations, soaring solos, etc. From the outset, however, we wanted to do an al-bum that wouldn’t appeal to jazz fans alone. Our greatest collabora-tion with Jamala is what we’re working on right now. On my new al-bum, I’m doing lots of singing and that’s where I really need her help. She’s teaching me to sing, comparing singing to football, where a player has to practice all his moves and kicks over and over again, in order to become a good player. Sadly, I’m not a rival to Jamala in singing yet,” Eugene says with a smile.

Soulmates are the reason to stay.Continuing our talk about Maneken’s music, we came to the most interesting topic of our today’s discussion – his second album, re-leased on 15 April. “The work is called Soulmate Sublime. The name underlines the respect I have for my colleagues. I felt a great differ-ence while working on the second album, comparing this process to my first album. The first one I did myself, including the design, and the rest of the routine elements. Now I can say that it’s much better to work with the other people who did a lot to popularise the Manek-en.” The artist’s two albums are very different. And that’s because the Maneken is not a one-man performer anymore. “There is a great difference between playing solo, where I can only sing and/or play one musical part with the rest coming from the record, and playing with a live band. You simply can’t give as much energy when you’re the only musician on stage, while a live band suits that purposes perfectly,” is how Eugene explains his decision. It’s hard to imag-ine how a live band can play electronic music. In fact, the Maneken band doesn’t do any DJ-ing, as they have dramatically changed their genre. Adding to this the artist says, “I’ve changed the concept of the music. Music is like clothes for me. I’m acting like a designer, putting the best clothes on a manikin. I like how the audience reacts to these changes.” The idea to form a live band for the second al-bum came to Eugene when he met German director Charlie Stadler. The latter came to Kyiv to shoot a commercial video and, by coin-cidence, happened to be invited to Maneken’s studio. Charlie saw musical instruments and remembered that he himself was a good musician. After a short jam, and inspired by the event, Charlie re-corded the song on his phone and returned home. A couple of days later, Eugene received a call from Mr. Stadler, who had written lyrics to what they’d recorded, prompting Eugene to come up with an ar-rangement. That is how the Maneken band recorded their first song called Shine for the upcoming album. Shortly after, Charlie Stadler offered to write more lyrics and eventually wrote all of the words for Soulmate Sublime. “In fact, Charlie’s lyrics have a deep meaning.

Most club-goers in Ukraine will have at least heard about the Maneken, AKA Eugene Filatov, and his magic DJ-ing table-device that is the central focus of his sets. Now, however, with the release of his second album and a couple of video clips, his audience is struggling with the question: does the fact that he has lately been collaborating mean that from now on the Maneken will no longer be a DJ? “No, I’m not going to quit electronic music, but I think it will be even more electric and danceable. A band opens up big stages for an artist and is a great addition to the Maneken DJ project,” says Maneken.

“I’VE CHANGED THE CONCEPT OF THE MUSIC. MUSIC IS LIKE CLOTHES FOR ME. I’M ACTING LIKE A DESIGNER, PUTTING THE BEST CLOTHES ON A MANIKIN.”

Many people ask me where all the funk went from the music. Well, it’s hard to mix deep lyrics with funky melodies. It’s not a lottery and we worked hard to create a consistent album,” is how the Maneken explains the eventual destination of the creative search.

Onward and upward with styleThe live band and instrumental music is the key for Maneken to broadening his musical influence. Solid proof of this lies in the three concerts already booked for the artist. The first one is the official presentation of the band in Kyiv, the second will be held in Moscow and the last one a show at MuzExpo in Los Angeles. Asking the Maneken which one of these three is the most important for him and his recently formed band, we received a kind of fiddly answer: “Well, that’s a hard ques-tion. The one I’m most looking forward to is the one in Kyiv, as it’s a great pleasure to play in the city I live in and to see the smiling faces of my friends, who never miss my concerts; it helps a lot to perform for them. I love the city and the people here. And I doubt that I would agree to move to another country were I invited. Still, strategically speaking, the concert in Los Angeles is more important, because it’s go-ing to be a great gathering of our targeted audience from the music industry.” For a good musician every concert is impor-tant and everything that he does affects his career. Summing up the conversation, Eu-gene Filatov tells us what is so special about the music he performs, under-lining three vital elements that must always be considered: “Harmony is the first one. All the sounds you pro-duce should be interrelated. The second one is “recognizable hand-writing”. Your music should be easily recognized by the listeners. Finally, the last element is style. There is a slight difference between style and pomposity. Paying atten-tion to detail helps any artist to look stylish and not silly.”
