Happy Hippo Birthday! On 28 June, the Kyiv Zoo held a very special birthday party for two of its oldest residents. Firstly, there’s Bresta the Hippopotamus who turned 53 years-old making her the second old-est hippo in the world, and next up is the 43 year-old white Rhino called Tryvoha, who’s well past the average age for these big animals. To mark this double occasion, the whole day at the zoo was one big birthday bash with all the animals receiving special party food, and all visitors getting treated to special events and excursions. The fact that any of the animals have lived to so long at Kyiv Zoo is cause for celebration, as according to the PETA animal rights organisation, it is one of the worst fi ve in the world. In addition, the animals at the zoo have been snuffi ng it in some very unusual and unexpected ways over the last year or so, leading some to speculate that some greedy oligarchs are looking to close the place and grab the very valuable real estate upon which the zoo resides. So a very happy birthday to Bresta and Tryvoha: keep looking over your shoulders!

Ukraine’s Bare BonesThere are those that doubt the all-knowing and wise Ukrainian babushka. However, with this latest discovery of 32,000 year old bones found in the Buran-Kaya cave-site of the Crimean mountains, perhaps Doubting Thomases needn’t doubt the age-old intel-ligence that exists in this part of the country at all. It seems Archaeologist Dr Oleksan-dr Yanevich from the National Ukrainian Academy of Science in Kyiv discovered the four Buran-Kaya caves in the Crimean Mountains in 1991, and since then, roughly two hundred human bone fragments have been unearthed at the site. Shards of hu-man bones and teeth have been found, as have ornaments made of ivory and animal remains, which researchers were able to di-rectly date using radio-carbon techniques. These artefacts tie the ancient people to a cultural tradition known as Gravettian which came to span the entire continent of Europe during the Stone Age, and demon-strates once again that there is much more to Ukraine than meets the eye.

Azarov Appears to Miss the HypocrisyIn what has to be one of the biggest pot and kettle situations in history, Azarov once again is saying that the current gas deal with Russia is unfair (that’s the one he negotiated, extending Russia’s lease on Sevastopil for another 25 years), while Ty-moshenko goes on trial for much the same thing.Russia’s natural gas price for Ukraine cur-rently equates to $295.6 per 1,000 cubic me-tres and it is expected to rise to $350 in the third quarter and to $400 in the fourth quar-ter of this year. Azarov is not satisfi ed, and insists the deal needs to be revised. “We would like our [Russian] partners to un-derstand, and we insist on this during our talks on the contract, that a contract that does not suit one of the sides and does not suit categorically will not last for long,” he said in an interview with 1+1 channel.Currently, Ukraine receives a 30 percent dis-count on gas from Russia, compared to the prices EU member states pay, but that, ap-parently, is not enough. So, Mr Azarov, how much is the deal you did costing the country? And when will you stand trial for it?

Shevchenko Stands Tall in OttawaA monument to Ukraine’s greatest bard, Taras Shevchenko (who was also a talented artist), was unveiled in the Canadian capital at the weekend to mark the 120th anniversary of the arrival of the fi rst Ukrainian settlers in that North American country, and also to celebrate 20 years of Ukrainian independence.Created by the well-known Ukrainian-Cana-dian sculpture Leo Mol, the statue of the great man is one of the tallest in the city standing 3 stories high. Including the image of the artist as a young man and the texts of three of his most famous works, the monument stands on the grounds of the Ukrainian National St. John the Baptist church on the banks of the Rideau Canal. Commentators have noted the surrounding scenery is reminiscent of Kaniv, the town on the Dnipro where Shevchenko was laid to rest. Those who funded the monument to Shevchenko hope this is only the fi rst step in the creation of a park in Ottawa that will bring together Canadian and Ukrainian cul-tures.

This Week Theatre and Classical Music 1-7 July 20118

Open-air SerenadesOpen-air SerenadesSerenades by Mozart and Richard Strauss, Master Klass Culture Centre (Lavrska 16)1&8 July at 20.00In the course of their Classics on Fri-days classical music cycle, the Mas-ter Klass Culture Centre is present-ing a rather outstanding event: an evening of wind serenades. The con-cert will be taken up to the rooftop where it is promised that romance will fill the air not only because of the beautiful sounds but also because of the scenery. One of the pieces to be performed is the Serenade for Winds, Op 7 which not only is a true mas-terpiece of music but was written by Strauss when he was only 16! It’s actually a great evening to get geared up for the week ahead, as 8 July will include a night of Bach in three peri-ods, illustrating the emancipation of the harpsichord from its purely ac-companying role. Block everything out on your calendar for these next two Fridays and make sure not to miss these charming evenings. Tickets are 30hrv. For more informa-tion call 594-1062.

A Horse and a Woman A Horse and a Woman Exhibition of paintings by Oleksandr Pavlov, Tryptykh Art Gallery (Desyatynna 13)From 30 JuneOleksandr Pavlov is a true master in expres-sive non-fi gurative art whose 30-year career has included shows in Ukraine, Russia, Germany, France, India and England among others. In his latest series of works, the artist has taken the words of Edgar Degas, “Is it possible to lament a world where horses and women exist!” and created an entire retrospective including these beautiful and mysterious creatures. Turning to symbolism and a mixture of subtle colours, this exhibition also shows the philosophical mind of a great artist who also happens to be the author of several books. Oops…Oops…She Did it AgainShe Did it AgainBritney Spears (USA, pop), Palace Sport (Sportyvna Pl 1)27 September at 19.00Britney Spears was an absolute icon for youth in 2000 when her debut album ...Baby One More Time hit music store shelves; and let’s be honest the shelves over in Petrivka couldn’t keep up either. While she had taken a break from music due to, shall we say, erratic behaviour, she’s now up to her seventh studio album (if you can believe it) called Femme Fatale. Ranked number six on Forbes Most Powerful and Infl uential ce-lebrities in the world in 2010, you might want to get your butts in the seats for this one: drama seems to follow Britney wherever she goes and this concert is no exception. Tickets are 590 – 9990hrv. For more information call 246-7406.

Two years after that was when he really started to soar, however,

and his very fi rst solo number one, Praise You, was released to praise from everybody. Moving on to a top hit that had an even funk-ier video, Weapon of Choice cata-pulted Cook to stardom, and now regardless of how fat or slim he is, this DJ ain’t comin’ down anytime soon. Here in Kyiv last year, you’ll have to head to Odesa this year if you want to check him out!Tickets are 300 – 800hrv. For more information call 384-4444.

Opera Summer Opera Summer PremierePremiereIolanta – Russian opera in 1 act,National Opera Theatre of Ukraine (Volodymyrska 50)8 July at 19.00Closing this year’s theatre sea-son, the National Opera Theatre of Ukraine presents the premiere of the opera Iolanta by Tchaikovsky. Inspired by the Danish play King Rene’s Daughter by Henry Hertz, the opera was written quickly and was fi rst debuted at the Mariinsky Theatre in St.Petersburg in 1892. Since then, it has been success-fully staged in Russia and abroad, most notably thanks to music critics who often note the lyrical beauty and charm of the heroine. Born blind without realising it, both Iolanta and the story may be a bit naïve. However, it ends well proving love can work miracles. Tickets are 20 – 200hrv. For more information call 279-1169.

A Virtuoso on the A Virtuoso on the Electric GuitarElectric GuitarEnver Izmaylov (Uzbekistan/Crimea), House of Architects (Hrinchenka 7)8 July at 19.00Enver Izmaylov is an outstand-ing musician, and using guitar strings as a keyboard to create fantastic new sounds, his unique technique called “tapping” is what makes him so special. Combining rock with a little jazz and then a few nuances of folk as well, most specifi cally those of his Crimean Tatar roots, anyone who has ever been to one of his shows knows that he is a big fan of improvi-sation. Moving from one crazy rhythm to the next, this is a must see for anyone into music of any kind. Tickets are 200hrv. For more in-formation call 234-7008.

An Invasion of VoicesAn Invasion of VoicesKuban Cossack Choir, Palace Ukraine (V Vasylkivska 103)16 – 17 November at 19.00As well as being one of the most an-cient, the Kuban Cossack Choir has to be one of the most prominent of Russian choirs to date. Its roots go back to the beginning of the 19th century where their artistic mastery even then was unparalleled. Receiv-ing numerous invitations to perform the world over, the choir’s repertoire is surely something to behold as it includes moving historic ballads, common Eastern European folk songs, hymns that speak of the tragic civil war on Kazan territory as well as anthems that promote the rich and unique folk culture that was the Cossack army. Take Me Out!Take Me Out!

If it’s Summer – Then it’s CrimI don’t know of anyone who doesn’t dream of heading to Crimea in the summer: the hot sun, the cool sea, the picturesque rock formations, the surrounding beaches. It’s got everything that is all too desirable when you’re stuck in a hot city. While What’s On has no time to take off down south (we do work round the clock to provide you with the most recent and interesting information each week, after all) what we do have time for is a little Crimea right here in Kyiv.

A Clever Bill of FareRight away I can see that the interior is rather ordinary, and come the weekend, the rich and glamorous will most certainly be found some place else (which for some might be a good thing). However, amid its simplicity and informality, it is cool, and for that I am grateful. Draperies hang from the ceiling separating each eating space and adding intimacy, while small table lamps sit

on every table replacing pompous chandeliers. As well, each table has their own call button al-lowing for what I can only guess will be quick service. This particular chain of restaurants serves Crimean Tatar cuisine, which is a fi ne assort-ment of Tatar tradition and the local Crimean climate. Add to that the spicy fl air of Turkish, Greek and Ukrainian cookery and I have to say I am eager to try a few morsels of this multina-tional gastronomy. With the menu already on the table, we open it up to fi nd not only a numerous array of dishes but a picture beside each option. For newcomers to the country or just the restau-rant, this a great introduction to items they might not otherwise be familiar with. Add to that sug-gestions of other dishes that might go well with the one you are interested beneath each option, and I’m thinking they’re pretty clever. I can hardly pronounce the names properly, and when I attempt to they don’t really mean anything to me so for lunch this afternoon I am not only going to rely on my intuition but help from our waiter. Standing close by, I wave him

I have been told about Krym by a few of my friends who know a bit about quality food at reasonable prices, and claiming this among their favourites to satisfy wild

hunger, I have to admit I’m interested. So fi nd-ing myself on Khreshchatyk with a friend one hot sweaty busy afternoon, we come across the Krym sign right on the corner of Maidan Nezale-zhnosti and Shevchenko Provulok and walk in.

Singing and Dancing in the RainROSCHA Despite the persistent, sometimes torrential, rain on Saturday 25 June, the Kyiv Lions Club and there guests turned out for the annual Kozak Night with full spirits ready to be exhausted and full wallets ready to be emptied. All in the name of charity. With the inimitable DJ Pasha assisted by the lovely Masha Sheremeteva as hosts, and some excellent live performances headlined by Iryna Bylik, the party, despite the weather, was a great success: everyone had a great time as usual, and more importantly, lots of money was raised for those in need!

201 Years of IndependenceRANCHO EL GAUCHO 9 June saw a mass gathering of Argentinean nationals at the El Gaucho restaurant. The event? Two hundred and one years of independence for the republic. In contrast to other independence days, this was an unusual celebration that included a ceremony where Ukrainian VIPs were awarded for their contributions in helping promote this South American culture. Awards included various nominations such as Voice of Ukraine, Carnival-Man, Cheerfulness of the Country, as well as accolades in the spheres of football, dancing and cooking. The evening continued much in the same way it started, with heartfelt smiles, where everyone had a wonderful time.

Back to His Roots MYSTETSKIY ARSENAL On 21 June, Mystetskiy Arsenal held another impressive exhibition opening showcasing 200 or so works by famous Ukrainian artist Vasyl Ermilov. Gathering people from all over Ukraine back in the early 1900’s, Ermilov used their faces, personalities and characteristics for pieces that were highly innovative at the time. His approach destroyed the artistic stereotypes critics had not only then but now, allowing individualism to surface. Open until 17 July, Vasyl Ermilov’s roots are on display for all to see.

The battles give the participants an opportunity to show off their knowledge in various spheres of business while learning something new from their opponents at the same time. The fi rst round showed that our businessmen in Kyiv know a lot about their jobs and are yet ready to learn more.
