Femen in FranceSince cutting down a cross last month, suppos-edly in support of Russia’s Pussy Riot, the Fe-men girls have come out of their hiding places, and have now appeared in Paris. Opening a new headquarters in what appears to be a largely Muslim neighbourhood, about 20 girls (both Ukrainian and French) paraded through Paris’ 18th Arrondissement on Monday, in traditional fashion – topless – with slogans “STOP” painted across their chests.According to Femen activist, Inna Shevchenko, the Ukrainian organisation received an email reading, “Hello, we’re French women and we need Femen in France.” Apparently that’s all these bare-naked marauders require to make an appearance these days – an email, which, if you think about it, is a little bit like the modern-day Bat-Signal. Too bad they’re not nearly as cool as the Dark Knight, nor as discreet…

Visas! What a Problem!Foreigners to Ukraine often complain about the 90-day rule, and that leaving the coun-try every three months just to get their pass-ports stamped is a bit of a nuisance, to say

coalition with the PoR after the election. “The Party of the Regions has lost its repu-tation and we consider any links with this party impossible,” he said. Now that’s what we like to see – real people fighting for the betterment of their country, because it’s the right thing to do. Keep punch-ing Vitaliy, you may just win this thing.

Ukraine Produces Hot Chicks Not that you need more evidence to prove some of the most beautiful women in the world are Ukrainian. However, if you do, then we’ve got a little snippet for you.Esquire magazine has just awarded well-known Ukrainian-born Hollywood actress, Mila Kunis, the title Sexiest Woman Alive. Dethroning last year’s winner, Rihanna, the Black Swan actress appears on the Novem-ber issue wearing nothing more than a pair of skintight trousers, posing seductively with her back to the camera. The star of cult American sitcom, That 70s Show, and romantic comedy, Friends with Benefits, Kunis was born in the western Ukrainian town of Chernivtsi, but left for the US with her family at the tender age of seven. Taking up where Demi Moore left off, Kunis is often seen on the arm of former co-star Ashton Kutcher, and says about her new title, “If I wanted to charm the pants off you, I could.” Yep, we bet!

Polls Put UDAR in Second Place The 41-year-old heavyweight-boxing champion is ploughing through his op-ponents in the ratings, if reports from independent polls earlier this week are accurate. Vitaliy Klitschko and his party UDAR (Punch) has surged into a gleam-ing second place, just behind Party of Regions, and past the United Opposition, which includes Tymoshenko’s Batkivsh-chyna (Fatherland). According to the Democratic Initiatives Foundation on Monday, the numbers are such: PoR – 23.3%, UDAR – 16%, United Opposition – 15.1%, a huge difference from just last week, which showed the President’s party with 28.1% support. This is massive for the political newcomer, and not just be-cause he stands two metres tall. But be-cause it could well mean a 50-50 parliament split if election results are fairly tabulated. “It would not be telling the truth if I said I was not satisfied with this,” said Klitchko in an interview. “I am satisfied that the curve of our support is being maintained and, with three weeks left, that we will be able to in-crease our electoral support even more.” What’s more, Dr Ironfist has ruled out any

the least. What we don’t realise is that we are often the lucky ones – many of us do not need visas to enter Ukraine, and for those of us that do, they’re fairly easy to acquire. This, or at least the idea of visas, is the premise be-hind a new exhibition, featured recently in the home of well-known Ukrainian photogra-pher, Ihor Hayday.Joining forces to speak out on the problem of that ever-elusive European visa, many Ukrai-nian and foreign activists, writers, journal-ists, scientists and sportsmen feature in this very topical exhibition. Unveiled symbolically on 3 October (the day the Berlin Wall fell), it is called, “Visas? What’s the Reason?”, and features the more often than not negative visa experiences of well-known figures Irena Karpa, Myroslav Marynovych, Roland Mikiani, just to name a few.Conceived by the public service, Europe With-out Borders, the exhibition was initiated here in Ukraine and was on display for just a few days. Already on the road to Poland, the hope is that Europeans will finally become aware of Ukrainians’ plight concerning European visas, so that missing important events aboard, such as scientific conferences, sports champion-ships, even innocent family visits, becomes a thing of the past.

IT in Ukraine Continues to Outsmart the Competition As reported in a What’s On feature on Out-sourcing just a couple of weeks ago, Ukraine is one of the strongest IT countries among the CIS. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and this pudding is called Viewdle, a Ukrai-nian IT company Google recently paid $35 – 40 million for. Viewdle offers face, object, and gesture recognition technology products, allowing, among other features, automated photo tagging; and now it belongs to Google. The deal is a huge coup for Ukraine, and specif-ically those in the IT sphere, confirming there are talented professionals that exist in this country; even if our government makes it dif-ficult for outsiders to believe that to be true. As for its future use, the Android community anticipates the face recognition technology will be utilised in conjunction with Google Goggles. “Imagine, looking at a friend and having [a pair of] glasses [which] recognises them and tells you key facts such as when their birthday is or what their favourite top-ics of conversation are,” suggests the news website, Interfax. Amazing!

Odesa Says Thanks to Steve JobsThere’s a brand new monument in Odesa. It’s got nothing to do with the upcoming elections, nor does it have to do with farming, vodka or girls (presumably all things people associate with Ukraine). It’s a tribute to Apple’s former CEO, Steve Jobs.Unveiled on 5 October, the monument was born out of one student’s desire to commemo-rate the late computer guru. Featuring a hand made of cogs, pistons, screws, bolts and other such mechanical items, a silhouette of the Ap-ple logo in the palm completes the picture. Its creator, Kirill Maksymenko of the Odesa State Academy of Technical Regulation and Quality, says he started working on the tribute in No-vember of last year and used more than 300kg of metal parts. Christened “Thank you, Steve”, the 2-metre monument is one of Odesa’s newest attrac-tions. If you happen to be down in this seaside town, give it a look. It can be found at Novosel-skoho 74/76.

This Week in History

13 October 1875 Founded by the Austro-Hungarian em-peror Franz Joseph, the Czernowitz Higher Theological School opens. It reopens as the Chernivtsi State University in 1940, and becomes known as one of the oldest classi-cal universities in Ukraine. It is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its unique architecture.

14 October 1942The Ukrainian Insurgent Army is officially created. As their immediate goal is the es-tablishment of a united, independent na-tional state on Ukrainian ethnic territory, they fight against the Red Army, Nazi Ger-many and Communist Poland.

14 October Orthodox Christians celebrate this day as the Holy Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and as tradition states, all harvesting should be finished by sundown. It becomes the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks in 1999.

15 October 1926 The Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Theatre of Russian Drama is opened in Kyiv. It houses the former Bergonie Theatre, which goes back to 1868, and is renamed only in 1941 after the famous Ukrainian poetess and dramatist.

15 October 1995A bomb goes off in the Shakhtar Stadium in Donetsk, killing President of the Shakhtar Football Club, Akhat Bragin. As Bragin’s right-hand man, Rinat Akhmetov inherits the club and takes over exactly one year later.

16 October 2010Kyiv acquires a new high-speed tram, linking the Borchshagivka district with the city centre.

Karavan Shooter Identified In what may be the most lethargic and least impressive manhunt of all time, Ukrainian authorities say they have identified the Karavan shooter as Yaroslav Feodosiyovych Mazurok, and that they will arrest him soon. According to an official statement, the 38-year-old Lviv native has lived in Kyiv for a “long time”, and is an avid boxer and sports-man. Initial reports indicate that he has worked at private security firms, confirming initial suspicions that Mazurok is a trained gunman. Authorities refused to address questions about Mazurok’s whereabouts or his (presumably) imminent arrest. Mazurok fatally shot three employees and seriously wounded a forth at the Karavan shopping mall on Luhova in Kyiv on 26 September. He opened fire when the se-curity guards confronted him after seeing him steal a USB flash drive from a store. In happier news, authorities also announced that that fourth wounded security guard re-gained consciousness and that his life is no longer in danger. He is, however, still recov-ering from gunshot wounds to the neck and is unable to speak. He is under round-the-clock, armed surveillance.

Cooking with Fire Punishable By LawA Ukrainian student was sentenced last week for frying eggs over an open flame in the middle of Kyiv last week. Now, one might wonder why such an act requires such a hefty suspended three-year sentence, until you learn that the open flame was actually the eternal flame of the WWII memorial – the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.Protesting against governmental policies which do little to assist impoverished war veter-ans, the perp is 21-year old Hanna Sinkova, member of the radical youth movement The Brotherhood of St Lucas. “Its symbolical meaning was that soon, very soon, veterans, old people, poor people will queue up in front of this flame to cook food there because they will have nowhere to live, nothing to cook on and nothing to eat,” she was quoted as saying on Friday, when the sentence was handed down. According to statistics, the average monthly salary for pensioners in Ukraine is a measly 1,100hrv. Perhaps Hanna has a point.

JestDespite its tongue-in-cheek char-

acter, some art fans argue that the pieces ANTIart exhibits are often more interesting and meaningful

than the supposedly transcendental lavatory pans or embalmed cow heads we’re used to seeing on the Kyiv art scene. What’s On meets Todor for a chat about contemporary art and anti-art.

What’s Eating Kyiv? The Centre of Contemporary ANTIart made headlines this summer, shortly after officials announced a competition for a new logo for the city of Kyiv. The scandal and confusion sur-rounding the contest prompted Todor and his group to run a parallel competition for the city logo. They received well-thought-out submis-sions from people who have never even been to Kyiv; such as the competition’s winner, Ivan Rumov, from Barnaul, Russia. His emblem de-picts a greedy official literally eating Kyiv. The other entries were in the same vein: sarcastic, creative, and far more interesting than the ap-plicants of the official competition. When I meet Todor, the first thing I ask is what sparked the whole ANTIart movement. “A ter-rible thing happened to contemporary art in Ukraine—it became trendy! It went from being an interesting phenomenon to the equivalent of microwave popcorn. There are so many galleries and ‘centres of contemporary art in Kyiv’ and a lot of them have nothing to do with art at all!” That is why Todor and his friends deliberately took an official, pretentious name: “We actually could have named ourselves the Institute of De-velopment of Contemporary Art or something equally official-sounding and no one would’ve asked about our credentials!” laughs Todor.

A Metamorphosis of Transcendental Indulgence The project launched in 2011 with its first exhibition, self-importantly titled, “Metamor-phosis of Transcendental Indulgence”. Todor jokes that the name has no meaning whatso-ever, it’s just highfalutin, pretentions words thrown together. The works exhibited were children’s drawings and scribbles, accompa-nied by cryptic inscriptions like, “A cat on a roof—a man in search of meaning.” Todor says the collection was put together in jest, but that, unexpectedly, the pieces kindled

serious discussion. “I witnessed people exam-ining the works and theorising about their deeper meaning! And therein lies the problem – our people have no critical approach, they are ready to sit down and try to think out the meaning for anything they see.”

Corridor to the ToiletThe location of ANTIart is in keeping with its facetious roots: it’s a corridor in a local pub on Prorizna. “Since we are parodying art institu-tions, we did not worry too much about loca-tion,” quips Todor, “though it’s telling that this corridor leads to a toilet. And by the way, the name of the pub (Trallebus) is misspelled – it all works for our concept.” However, the site does have its drawbacks. Todor recalls that many works have been stolen from the “gallery”. “It was unpleasant, of course, but then I figured we were doing something right if people were stealing our anti-art!” ANTIart’s early exhibitions mostly attacked the cultish pretention surrounding contempo-rary art in Ukraine, but in its later collections, the gallery has expanded its purview, weighing in on politics and social life as well.

The Future of Fake Art Perhaps in a bid to evade theft by full-blad-dered bar patrons, ANTIart has displayed some of its more recent collections exclusively online. One is entirely comprised of works by Ivan Rumov, the same Russian artist who won alternative ANTIart’s logo competition. Todor says the exhibition highlights problems that are pretty much the same in different coun-tries: corruption, politicians’ lies, and the stupidity of political slogans and campaigns. Another exhibition highlights well-known on-line artist Valeriy Zavatt, whose trademark is drawings of clever double entendres. Todor says ANTIart has attracted a large enough group of young and talented artists to stage a new exhibition each month. When I ask him about the future of his group, Todor compares it to charity work. “The aim of each charity organisation is not to be needed anymore – if you help orphans you want there to be no orphans in the end. I won’t take the comparison too far, but my aim is essentially the same – our goal is to get rid of this fake contemporary art. When this happens, I’ll think of something else to do!”

FuellingIt’s been two years since the IMF started chal-lenging Ukraine on household gas prices, say-ing the government should be trying to equalise the buying and selling price. As such, everyday Ukrainians have no need for alternative energy, like solid biomass, because they believe they are already getting a good deal when it comes to gas. Experts are hoping this situation doesn’t last much longer: “We are not asking for subsidies for alternative energy, we only want the subsidy to be removed on natural gas,” continues Heletukha. “Then biomass can become economically com-petitive, which means everyone saves money.” Today, biomass represents only 0,7% of the over-all consumption of energy in Ukraine. Half of that includes village inhabitants who still use firewood to heat their homes; the other half is the wood industry – woodworking factories supply themselves completely with energy just in burn-ing the waste of their production. Ukraine also provides biofuel for export: last year the country sold nearly 600 tonnes of biomass mainly to Po-land and Germany.

Liquid PowerThe situation with liquid biofuel is even more complicated. Liquid biofuels (biodiesel and bio-

ethanol) are produced from such crops as sunflower, rapeseed, corn, or any sugar-con-taining plants – sugar beets for instance. Six

or seven years back, Ukraine did not know

much about rapeseed. But over the last five years,

the volume of rapeseed found in Ukraine has increased expo-

nentially – more than 2 million tonnes a year, sold at $600 per tonne. Molasses (a sugar beet by-product) are one of the most common products used in Ukraine to pro-duce liquid biofuel. Vitaliy Daviy, president of the Association of Alternative Fuel and Energy Mar-ket Participants of Ukraine, explains the situa-tion regarding sugar beets in Ukraine: “The first steps to establish stable bioethanol production in Ukraine were made in 2000, when the Ukrai-nian government adopted a special programme called, Ethanol, which provided tax breaks for mixed petrol producers. In 2001, the programme was cancelled, and soon the tax breaks returned to those who produced alternative fuels contain-ing no less than 30% of bio-component. Today, the volume of bio-components production (bio-ethanol) is nearly 3,000 tonnes a month, while monthly usage of petrol in Ukraine is more than 500,000 tonnes. “The problem is that the rest of the world has pret-ty high excise taxes for petroleum products, so in Europe, for example, petrol costs nearly 2 euros, while biodiesel is free from excise tax, making al-ternative fuel economically justified. In Ukraine, petrol is 1 euro per litre and biodiesel simply can-not compete with this price. Experts suggest the state either raise the tax for petroleum products,

or give a separate subsidy to alternative fuel pro-ducers – so far Ukraine is doing neither!”

Raw ResourcesThe only economically profitable activity in the alternative fuel industry in Ukraine is growing plants and selling the raw materials to Europe, where they are later processed into liquid biofuel. Exporting raw rapeseed to Eu-rope is tax free – if one wanted to export biodie-sel he’d have to pay a levy. That’s why Ukraine today is mainly a raw materials supplier for Europe, while for the Ukrainian economy, un-derstandably enough, it would be better to sell readymade products. But, here we come to the dilemma pointed out by one of our experts – Dave Young, Chairman of the Board at the European Ukrainian Energy Agency: “Ukraine has resources, good agricultural land, water, and sunshine. From there you have a choice of how to use those resources, whether you grow a food crop, or an energy crop. If you have taken the route of choosing an energy crop, once it is grown it will give you a yield per acre which, depending on the crop you have chosen, will equate to a cer-tain measure of embodied energy or potential en-ergy. And from there, how you process this energy, and how much energy you use to get it to final use, are key issues on the environmental front and in terms of sustainability. Biomass to liquids is always a highly politicised subject and markets usually occur with subsidies.”Another prospect in liquid biofuel production, according to Young, is the potential of state-owned distillery factories. Vitaliy Daviy, of the Association of Alternative Fuel and Energy Mar-ket Participants of Ukraine (APEU), agrees that Ukraine has huge potential in growing crops for alternative energy, and this sphere will not be an obstacle to agricultural food crop-growing, giving examples of growing sorghum or corn: “Taking into account a good half of Ukrainian distillery factories are not working, or working at 10-15% of their capacity, biofuel production can reani-mate the distillery branch. Today, Ukraine is able to produce nearly 500,000 tonnes of bioethanol per year. The cheapest way of producing bioetha-nol is from corn, though in Ukraine, there are no companies which have grown the crop and pro-duced alternative fuels just yet.” A solution may come from the state again – by adopting the law on compulsory content of bio-ethanol (say 5%) in petroleum, the state would give powerful momentum to this effort. Without such a law, Ukraine will simply remain an im-portant raw material supplier to Europe, despite its potential. Ukraine can try hard at becoming green in its energy sphere, and in people’s mentality, but be-fore that happens, the green strategy needs to be supported on the state level, and be given a stable economic justification. Only then can Ukraine become really independent from Russian gas and private petroleum traders.

In this day of fast paced and ever-changing life, maintaining friendships is not an easy thing to do. Maintaining friendships as an ex-pat

in Kyiv is particularly hard as most people are here for a limited time and then move on. As an ex-pat living in Kyiv, it can also be quite difficult to maintain friendships back home as clearly you can’t keep in contact and see each other the same way as before. And quite often, sadly, out of sight is out of mind.I am writing this this week from the little village of Kippen in Scotland where I am spending time with my mum and catching up with friends. I’ve still managed to keep in touch with some of them, and we all get together most times I’m back. And it’s a very nice thing to do, to catch up with them all and find out what’s happening in their lives. However, some friends I’ve lost touch with as they’ve moved away or other changes in their lives or mine have simply led to a break in communi-cation. I still think of them all once in a while, and think I should give them a call or send them an email, but I never get round to it, time passes and the gulf widens. But recently, on that social website we all love (and often love to hate), I got a friend request from one of these old friends, Geroge, who’d seen me on the friends list of a mutual friend (real life mutual friend that is). We caught up. We realised it had been around 8 years since we’d last seen each other, so he told me all that he’d been up to in that time and I told him all about my life. He was very surprised to hear I now live in Kyiv.

Within a day I had two more friends get in touch who’d seen me on George’s page. Again the con-versations went much the same way. The best part of all these conversations was sharing an-ecdotes we remembered about each other. We all had stacks of these (mostly alcohol related), and strangely the ones they remembered about me I’d forgotten and vice versa. For example, the last thing a chap called Tony remembered hearing from me was when I was travelling in North and Central America and I’d sent him an email telling him I’d driven 200 miles without the oil cap on. I’d completely for-gotten about this, but when he said it, of course I remembered. I had an old banger that burnt oil at an incredible rate. I had to refill it con-stantly, and one time I simply forgot to replace the oil cap. I found out when at about 4.00am on the coast of North Carolina the oil that had been exploding for hours out of the carburet-tor onto the engine started to smoke. Funnily, the oil cap was still lying on the rim of the body work where I’d left it.Yes, modern times makes it hard to keep friends some times, especially when one is an exp-pat liv-ing in Kyiv. But it seems whenever there is a prob-lem in life, modern technology has a solution. And sometimes that solution can unexpectedly throw up some very pleasant surprises. After all, there’s nothing better in life than friendship. Without it, all the money in the world won’t warm you.

Neil Campbell

Dear Larry,What do you think of those networking events designed to let foreign men meet Ukrainian women? I just moved to Kyiv to pursue my, uh, freelancing career and I’m looking for new friends, especially ladies. Your name sounds American, do you attend them? Just Curious, Fresh Off the Boat

Dear Fresh Off the Boat, Those events are in the same category as wedgies, curdled milk, and slipping on the Kyiv ice in the winter. The dating game here is ruthless and opportunistic, and the kind of people you’ll meet at these events tend to be old hands at it. At these events, the women are out to divest you of all your money while spending as little time with you as possible. To keep things interesting, the men are just out to bed as many women as possible, as cheaply as possible (but without stooping to hiring a professional, because that would be bad). Both men and women go for the figurative jugu-lar (though I’ve seen some men drunkenly grab for it literally when they meet a seemingly willing lady). What do you think? Sound like a good time? Just telling it like it is, Larry

tire main hall. Matte-glass light boxes, which gently change colours from green to pink to purple with every hue in between, are every-where and act to separate tables which in turn offer a little privacy. Once your eyes adjust to all of the colour, the extraordinary use of tra-ditional Thai ornamentation, which covers not only walls from top to bottom but also ceiling, becomes immediately apparent. It’s all a little over the top – but I’m just getting started… Next I notice the floor, which is, as I would ex-pect for a Thai establishment, hard wood. From there, my eyes are drawn to the 10 or so tables occupying this first room – all of them are topped by chunky wooden slabs, set with bril-liant red placemats, which have chairs made of metal and red plastic parked at each table setting. Almost as if more effect lighting were required, various lamps, some in sequins and others in gauze-like fabric with complemen-tary beading, can be found at various points around the venue. And finally, a female DJ plays her lounge mix in the corner to a small but appreciative audience. Pairing the extremes of traditional Thai design with high-tech modernity, the whole atmo-sphere is the very essence of Bangkok, Thai-land’s very centre of activity. It screams eccen-tricity. And yet, somehow, it all sort of gels.

Why Thai? Unfortunately, we have yet to kick the old to-bacco habit, and so will not be dining in this fascinating “Oriental setting” tonight. Instead, we are shown to the second hall, which is lined with a long bar to the left. It is exponentially smaller than the first room, and almost the polar opposite in design, what with the green, oversized sofas, large tables, and soft white light illuminating the cosy little room. Another reason this room works better for us is because, while the music is the same as that be-ing played in the non-smoking section, it’s qui-eter here and allows for conversation. Settling in, we are handed menus, and quickly delve into the specialities on offer while we wait for a couple of glasses of nice, chilled Chardonnay. I am not a connoisseur of Thai cuisine, and so much of what I see before me is new.

T he restaurant Siam has become what was known a year ago as Sakurokai, a Japanese sushi bar. Today, fashioning themselves as a

more south-eastern Asian venue with better service and a more diverse menu, we walk in and are immediately struck by a number of things…

Quick history reminder: before 1939, Thailand was called Siam, and was the largest and most powerful country of Indochina. Today, it is ranked the 4th richest nation, after Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia. But none of that matters really when all you want is some good Thai food – something we went looking for in a place located along Verkhniy Val with a name that politically ceased to exist 78 years ago.
