Former Weyburnite Brett Jones celebrated a win with his mom, Cheryl, anddad, Rob, at the 102nd Grey Cup held in Vancouver on November 30. Brett isa member of the Calgary Stampeders, who defeated the Hamilton Tiger Cats bya score of 20-16.

Grey Cup win has ties to WeyburnFirst time Grey Cup winner, Brett Jones had a lot to celebrate this weekend. After playing for
a short time with the Calgary Stampeders, Jones got what all CFL players dream of, a chance tohoist that cup high above his head.
Brett was born July 29, 1991, right here in the city of Weyburn. At the young age of 23, Joneshas already had quite an impressive career. After the 2012 CIS season, he was ranked as theeighth best player in the CFL Amateur Scouting Bureau final rankings for players eligible in the2013 CFL draft and fifth by players in the Canadian Inter-university Sport. Jones signed on withCalgary on May 29, 2013 - a decision which has paid off already.
Jones, an offensive lineman, joined the team in celebrating the 20-16 win over the HamiltonTiger Cats at the November 30 game. To top off the season, Jones was awarded the CFLOffensive Lineman of the Year.
This is the second year in a row that a former Weyburn athlete has been on the winning teamin the Grey Cup as well as being awarded Offensive Lineman of the Year. Brendon LaBatteaccomplished the same feat last year as part of the Saskatchewan Roughriders Grey Cup win.

On December 6 at 3:30p.m., at the Weyburn JuniorHigh, a service is being held inhonour of the victims of thistragedy, which is referred toas "The Montreal Massacre".The event not only took thelives of the 14 women, injur-ing an additional 13 victimsof both genders, but left fami-lies and friends behind to bearthe emotional trauma.

The Family Place was es-tablished in 1995 as a com-munity-funded, community-driven resource center forfamilies in Weyburn and thesurrounding area. Everyyear residents and staff do-nate countless hours andfunds to keep both the build-ing and the programs run-ning. The Family Place is a

Some of the programsavailable at The FamilyPlace include Drop In Play,Bakers to Be, Home AloneSafety, Sunny Scholars andCommunity Kitchen. Dawnexpressed the importance ofmaking everyone who walksthrough the doors feel wel-come. With The FamilyPlace reaching its highestfundraising total for a singleevent, those doors can con-tinue to stay open.
After quick calculations,with donations still tricklingin, Gutzke announced theevent raised over $72,000.Two trees, which were pur-chased for $4,900 each, con-tributed to the high grandtotal. Mal Barber of BarberMotors and Jeff Tosczak ofGreat Plains Ford were thegenerous purchasers of
those trees. The Family Placestaff was very pleased withthe support this year, ensur-ing that the work will con-tinue to benefit families in

She says that women areless likely now to report anincident to police than in thepast. Statistics now showthat more women are expe-riencing violence after theyleave their abuser.
Daku also emphasized thatpartner abuse has a profoundimpact on children. Each yearin Saskatchewan, approxi-mately 24,000 children will beexposed to male violenceagainst their mothers in theirown homes. Children arepresent during 80 per cent ofthese assaultive incidents.
Recognizing the impor-tance of honouring the vic-tims, survivors, friends andfamilies left behind, GlacierMedia, Access Communica-tions and Envision Counsel-ling have combined forces tosponsor this event. The af-
ternoon vigil will include apresentation by SalvationArmy Lieutenant BrianBobolo and a performanceby musician, Tenille Arts.The Salvation Army will beon hand that day to acceptnon-perishable food items.Everyone is welcome to at-tend the event, which willshine a light on the need toend violence against women.

Police kept busy with disputes and theftOn December 1, as a result of a traffic check, a 65 year-
old male was arrested and charged with driving over .08 anddriving without a valid licence. His vehicle was seized for 60days and he will be making a court appearance in due course.
On November 29, as a result of a traffic stop, a 31 year-old male was arrested and charged with driving Over .08. Hewill be making a court appearance in due course.
Also on November 29, the Weyburn Police Service re-sponded to a report of a domestic assault occurring in theresidence between a 48 year old male and a 49 year oldfemale. The matter was successfully mediated with no fur-ther police involvement.
On November 28, the Weyburn Police Service were calledto a report of a hit and run collision in the 600 block ofKing Street. The suspect vehicle is described as a black 2-door car with a spoiler, possibly a Cavalier. This vehiclestruck a fence and fled the scene.
The Weyburn Police Service have received more than onecomplaint about a fraud involving what is called the ''SecretShopper' fraud. The victim has answered an employmentad online and is provided with a kit and instructions on howto be a secret shopper for the company. The victim is pro-vided with a cheque which they deposit, and then make pur-chases and return the items and cash to the company. Theoriginal cheque provided is then found to be fraudulentand the victim is out the money and property. We urge people
to be very cautious when embarking on such an employ-ment venture and perform their due-diligence prior to spend-ing any of the money given to them.
On November 27, the Weyburn Police Service received areport from a local business that had been defrauded of inexcess of $320,000.00. The investigation is still in the earlystages and will involve multiple agencies.
Also on November 27, the Weyburn Police Service re-ceived a report of a theft of tools from a local business. Onesuspect description is a caucasian male, 5'8" tall, 170 lbs.,black rim glasses, black toque with 'misifts' written on it andwearing a black and red coat.
On November 25, the Weyburn Police Service was dispatchedto a report of a disturbance at a local pub. Upon arrival theincident had partially resolved itself. Two local men, ages 42and 54, were sent home. The 25 year-old male victim washappy with the resolution with no further action being required.
On November 24, the Weyburn Police Service received acomplaint of a domestic assault having happened at a localbusiness. As the result of the incident, the 39 year-old femalevictim transported herself to the Weyburn General Hospi-tal where she was examined and released. A 41 year-old malehas been charged with assault and has been released on a NoContact Order and will be making a court appearance.
As December is upon us, the members of the WeyburnPolice Service will be making an extra effort to keep our roadssafe from drinking drivers. You can expect to see checkstopsand random checks around the city during the entire month.
The Council of the City of Weyburn, pursuant to Section207 of the Planning and Development Act, 2007, herebygives notice of its intention to pass a bylaw respecting theestablishment and charging of off-site development leviesor subdivision servicing fees for one or more purposesdescribed in the act.

Saskatchewan introducing two retro licence platesTwo new retro licence plates - the Collector plate and the
Vintage Roughrider plate - will be available for Saskatchewanresidents to pre-order through SGI, just in time for the holi-day season.
"Green is the colour," Minister responsible for SGI DonMcMorris said. "It's the colour of our province, the colourof our pride, and now the colour of two new specialty li-cence plates Saskatchewan residents can display proudly ontheir vehicles. We're going back to our roots and drawing onSaskatchewan's heritage with the new Collector and VintageRider licence plates."
The retro licence plates are modeled after the 1965Saskatchewan licence plate. They have a green backgroundwith embossed white numbers, border, and lettering alongthe top and bottom. The Collector plate says "Collector"
along the bottom, while the Vintage Rider plate says "RiderNation" and features a vintage Saskatchewan Roughriderteam logo on the left.
"In Saskatchewan, people are passionate about their classiccars," Rural and Remote Health Minister and MLA forYorkton Greg Ottenbreit said. "The new Collector plate is away for car enthusiasts, myself included, to showcase that pas-sion. It's the final touch of authenticity to your classic car."

The stress of shopping for that perfect gift can be overwhelming. As I mentioned in lastweek's article, it's all about identifying something that he or she wants or needs. Sounds simple,doesn't it.
Since I've never been able to find a simple formula for meeting that criteria, I turned to thewisdom of others for help. Here are some of the suggestions I discovered. First ascertain thepersonality type of the intended recipient and go from there, create a Christmas Gift Registry Listor, determine what it is you want to say and communicate that to the recipient.
The gift registry sounds like a winner. Open the book or website, choose between the listedoptions and voila all you need to do is head down to the nearest mall...except I'm a year late insetting up a 2014 Christmas version of any kind of list. Scratch that one.
Forward march to matching personality types with presents. I click on the appropriate buttonsfor gender, age, morning routine and favourite chair. Within several blinks of the eye, suggestionspop up on the screen. Unfortunately the idea that seemed closest to reality for Hubby's qualifica-tions is dill pickle flavoured popcorn. That's definitely not the message I want to convey, al-though he really likes dill pickles.
While finding something material to represent our love and appreciation is difficult enough,what message do I (or we) want to convey to those less easy to love? To those for whom gifts aremore customary than heartfelt?
This year I am determined to spend less but give more of what really counts: time, abilities andat times, grace and forgiveness. Things that God thought of first.

If you have ever shopped at Costco, you will know the title ofthis column isn't actually that far-fetched.
The Christmas season is slowly sneaking up on us, but thewinter blues have hit as hard as a snowball to the face.
I have to say, I was fairly impressed with my level of patiencethe other day while waiting for a gentleman to back out of aparking space at Costco so I could get in it. I was sitting therequietly, except for the sound of the blinking signal light, when ithappened. It makes me giggle to think of it now and even had melaughing then.
A slightly crazed fellow started banging on my window yellingprofanities at me. I rolled down my window and asked "Can Ihelp you?" (Which, judging by his behaviour, was a really badquestion to ask.) He needed help alright... I certainly didn't have

Truth or fictionIn the world today, there are various ways that the question "Truth or Fiction?" is asked. In a
previous parish, when visiting a member, they entertained by playing a board game that askedquestions and gave one player the answer, while others got the "order" to lie. Points were given forevery lie that was believed or every true answer believed. Also, years ago there was "Ripley's Believeit or not!"
What does this have to do with a Clergy Column? December 6 is the celebration of St. Nicolas,Bishop of Myra. He was a very kind and generous person, who gave to many. Stories are told of histours during the night when he would give gifts of kindness to people whom he knew were inneed. But this was the real St. Nicolas, and the lie of "Santa Clause". Unlike the lie who keepstrack of your "naughty or nice", the real did not base receiving on "goodness". Unlike the Santaof today who gives to wants and desires trinkets and "stuff" that to increase our possessions andbragging ability as well as our "fun", the real St. Nicolas gave to the need, such as a bag of coinsdropped through a chimney for a lady who would be married except for the need of a few coins.
Unfortunately, good gifts have been changed to suggest "bad" gifts. At that time, people lefttheir shoes outside. St. Nicolas would go around in the night, placing precious coal in the shoesso that the household would have fuel to heat the house as well as cook meals. Many a familygained the ability to care for themselves because of the gift of coal. However, today, the gift of coalis suggested to be given to people who have been "bad" during the past year.
The real St. Nicolas of the fourth century lived among the people, not a distant place. He wassimply a person giving help to people in his own community, not one who had magical reindeerthat could fly and travel at nearly the speed of light in order to get all the toys delivered in a fewshort hours. The truth gave the gift secretly, by an unknown person, not a lying, flashy personlooking for a photograph opportunity in a mall.
When someone "caught" Nicolas as he was giving a gift, his generosity did not stop. However,after his death, his life and gift giving inspired others in the town to give gifts secretly and therespond with, "It must have been St. Nicolas."
It seems amusing, even tragic, that science who tries to pretend that they know all the answersaccept the lie of Santa Claus, even "following" him on radar. Yet, how many schools are notallowed to have real Christmas programs? There are situations where a student was reprimandedfor telling the truth of the birth of Jesus, while conversations about the lie of Santa Claus aretolerated, even encouraged. Let us keep Christ in Christmas. To paraphrase H. S. Vigevino in theBook Jesus, The Revolutionary, "It is better to destroy an illusion then to live a lie.

This man had come out of nowhere, or so it seemed.That's when I realized he had jumped out of his truck behind me, leaving the door wide open, sothat he could tell me to move.
He didn't even go the usual driver rage first step ...and lay on the horn. I mean, seriously, whogets out of their truck on a Saskatchewan winter evening if they don't have to?
I am guessing by the redness of his face, he probably wasn't feeling the cold anyway. I explainedto him that I was simply waiting for the parking spot, and I DID have my signal light on. He wasmore than welcome to drive around me if he could not wait the extra few seconds for the otherdriver to finish backing up.
I found it ironic that I had just heard on the radio on my way in to the city that the Mayor haddeclared that very day as "The Day of Giving" in Regina. I really don't think giving someone a hardtime was what he meant. It looks like he is going to have to get a tad more specific next year,because this guy clearly wasn't getting the message.
He mumbled some more and took off with his arms in the air as I wished him a very MerryChristmas. Maybe he was wishing me Happy Holidays with his sign language... that's what I amgoing to go with. I was feeling pretty happy about how calm I remained. I was having a fantasticday and this guy was not going to ruin it. I truly believe you get what you give, and it seemed thatthis fellow was definitely heading in the wrong direction.
Finally I got in to my parking space and headed to the store when I see the truck come backaround the corner, this time in the wrong lane. He cut off a lady and ended up causing quite thetraffic jam in the already cramped parking lot. It looked like things weren't getting any better forthis guy when I walked by the crowd of cars to see the other drivers flipping him the bird. Icouldn't help but giggle. Seems to me, the universe said what I had wanted to in the first place. AllI had to do was keep my mouth closed and karma handled the rest.

Now that it is December, our thoughts turn to Christmasmusic concerts and the WCS bands and choirs are very busythis month. The Grade 12 choir and S.T.A.R.S. choir per-formed at the Regina Rotary Carol festival on December 1.Then on Sunday, December 7, the school choirs are per-forming at the Weyburn Quota Club Carol Festival at GraceUnited Church. On Monday, December 8, the S.T.A.R.S.choir has been asked to perform at the Bengough ChristmasConcert and all of this culminates with the annual Christ-mas concerts at WCS with the choirs performing on Mon-day, December 15 and the bands on Tuesday December 16with both concerts starting at 7:00 in the Cugnet Centre.Admission is $5.00.
Another feather in the cap of the S.T.A.R.S. choir is thatthey have been chosen to perform at Telemiracle 2015.
The drama club is presenting the stage version of "PeterPan" at the T.C. Douglas Center on December 12, 13 and14 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $5.00.
The senior basketball teams have been chosen and theywill be attending their first tournaments on December 5and 6, with the boys in Prince Albert and the girls inCaronport.
There will be a wrestling tournament on December 6 inthe Cugnet Centre.
Guest speaker Ian Tyson will be here to talk to the stu-dents on Friday, December 5.

The Weyburn Duplicate Bridge Club will be having theirannual Christmas dinner at the Captain's Table on Mon-day, December 22 followed by bridge at the WheatlandSenior Centre. Regular duplicate bridge is played Mondaysat 7:00 p.m. and Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. at the WheatlandSenior Centre. All bridge players are welcome to come andplay this form of bridge.
On November 3, there were three tables and Diane Belland Barry Mactaggart took top honours, followed by LucieNickel and John Whitell in second.
Three and a half tables played on November 6 and BarryMactaggart and Lucie Nickel had a strong game to claimfirst, John Whitell and Chuck Widdis came second, andDiane and Gord Bell were third.
On November 10, four tables were in play with Diane andGord Bell finishing first, Jim Brown and John Whitell weresecond, while Barry Mactaggart and Marg Stewart were third.

Southeast College hosted an Open House for its Pre-Apprentice Plumbing & Pipefitting Program on Novem-ber 20 at the Weyburn Campus.
Southeast College is positioning itself to better meet theneeds of Southeast Saskatchewan's tight labour market byoffering responsive, flexible training options for in-demandpositions in the region. The Plumbing & Pipefitting coursewill graduate seven students who will be prepared to enterthe labour market. The Open House event offered stu-dents the chance to make connections with employers.
"We are constantly studying labour market trends andtalking with local business and industry to discover theirneeds," said Jeff Richards, Vice President of Strategic De-velopment at Southeast College.
"We can also work with employers to help match themwith our graduates, as well as tailoring programs that meetthe specific needs of employers."

Local plumbing contractor Erin Reddick, from Climatek,attended the event and was pleased at the level of trainingthe students received. "We're always looking for well trainedemployees and the content of this course is very good atgetting people ready for the real world of plumbing", saidReddick.
Angie Hastings from Don's Plumbing & Heating wasalso in attendance and had praise for the comprehensive17-week program. "Our company continues to grow andgetting access to people who want to work in the industryand who are trained is critical to growth," said Hastings.
Although the program doesn't end until January, mostof the students have already found a workplace to begintheir apprenticeship. The College anticipates an even moreactive role in providing labour market solutions and en-courages business, as well those looking for careers, to watchfor information on upcoming courses and events.

Former Weyburn Red Wing, Rylan Parenteau, who iscurrently playing for the Prince Albert Raiders, has beenone of the hottest goalies in the WHL for the last few weeks.Parenteau has helped win five out of the six games played bythe Raiders. The 18-year-old describes how his time spent asa Red Wing has been a major contributing factor to hiscurrent success.
"Weyburn was an excellent developmental year for me,"acknowledged Parenteau. "It allowed me to move my way upin junior hockey and it allowed me to play with older play-ers."
"By playing so many games, I knew I could be a starter,"added Parenteau, who appeared in 41 games with the RedWings last year. "I gained a lot of confidence through allthat."
With his time spent with Weyburn developing a strongbase, and the continued hard work Parenteau puts in, thefuture looks bright for the young star.
