Accomplished pianist to perform in hometownAn accomplished pianist and winner of the first Helen Davidson

Music Award, Meagan Milatz, will return home to Weyburn to per-form for a special Mother’s Day concert. The Weyburn Concert Se-ries has invited Milatz to perform at a special Volunteer AppreciationConcert to be held at the Cugnet Centre on May 10 at 1:00 p.m.

Milatz, a former resident of Weyburn, began her piano studies righthere in Weyburn at the tender age of five. Meagan trained under theinstruction of local teacher, Cherith Alexander. Her talent wasapparent even at a young age and she progressed rather quicklythrough her studies, completing her Performer's ARCT diploma atthe age of 12.

Milatz has continued to develop her talent over the years by continu-ing with performances and pursuing her education. Meagan has per-formed in several competitions including the Grand Awards Competi-tion, the National Music Festival, the OSM competition and the Cana-dian Music Competition. Most recently, Milatz has received first rankingin the CFMTA National Piano Competition (2011), the Shean Piano

University where Milatz recently received her Bachelor of Music inpiano performance. Milatz studied under the direction of Dr. LlyaPoletaev to earn this degree as well as earning a minor in Early MusicPerformance, having studied with Tom Beghin.

Meagan has gained a lot of experience as both a piano soloist andcollaborator. This experience and talent is what makes the Mother'sDay Concert all the more spectacular. Never before has the City ofWeyburn been host to a pianist of this calibre. The Weyburn ConcertSeries is pleased to have Meagan perform on the magnificent pianowhich the Butters family donated to the Cugnet Centre.

The Service Employees International Union West officially took strike action on April 22. They have removed services from 27 schools withinthe Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division. The employee groups that are included in the SEIU-West are custodians, bus drivers,educational assistants, administrative staff and library technicians. The members are striking for a cost of living wage increase of 2.8%.

During the week of April 13 to 19, the Weyburn Policereceived 62 calls for service.

On the evening of April 19, police responded to a distur-bance at a residence. Officers were able to mediate the situa-tion with no further problems.

Also on April 19, the Weyburn Police Service received acomplaint regarding a stolen iPad from the Weyburn Com-prehensive School. The matter is still under investigation.

The Weyburn Police Service received a complaint on April16 of a gas drive off from the Real Canadian WholesaleClub Gas Bar. A silver minivan pumped $53.00 worth offuel into their vehicle and left without paying. The theft isunder investigation.

On April 14, Police dealt with an 84 year-old male whodrove onto the grass and the sidewalk in front of the WeyburnCourt House. Several lights along the sidewalk were dam-aged in the incident. Court was in session at the time and themale thought he was at the Hospital. A driver review will besent to SGI and a charge of driving without due care andattention is pending.

In the early morning hours of April 15, Weyburn Policeconducted a vehicle stop on Campbell Crescent. The ac-cused was subsequently arrested and charged for operatinga motor vehicle while impaired.

On April 13, officers responded to a vehicle vs. bicyclecollision. As a result, the young female bicyclist was treatedfor minor injuries and the male driver of the vehicle wascharged with driving with undue care and attention.

On April 13, police also responded to a disturbance at aresidence on Park Ave. The parties involved were arguingover relationship issues. Police spoke to the parties and man-aged to calm the disagreement. Both agreed to keep the peace.

The Weyburn Comprehensive School held fundraisersthis week to raise money and awareness of cancer. Apancake breakfast was held on April 21 for students,staff and the general public. The school is also host-ing a Taco-in-a-bag lunch today (April 24) from 11:00a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The cost is $5.00. The public isinvited to attend the fundraiser to be held ColleenWeimer Hall at the school.

enough, it wasn't on tv... but it was over one. Two teenagerswith one tv and I had zero patience left. You do the math. Idon't care where you went to school, this wasn't adding up.

These two were arguing and simply could not see the other'spoint of view. The one thing they did have in common thoughwas the name-calling.

Don't get me wrong, I have two brothers and two sistersand we had our fair share of name-calling over the years andbeing that my mother is a teacher, this irritated her more FORECAST

If you don’t have anythingnice to say...

There is much talk in Christian circles about spiritual unity. Some seem to think thatunity is the most important thing for God's people, and some are willing to do whatever ittakes to establish it, to the extent of abandoning the very core of Christianity if that's whatit takes.

As a Christian pastor, I am all for Christian unity, and I think it is incredibly important.Jesus prayed in John 17:20, "I do not ask for these [my disciples] only, but also for those whowill believe in me through their word, that they may all be one . . ." Clearly, Jesus desiredunity, and therefore so should all Christians, and therefore, so do I.

The problem is not with unity itself, but with how the word is defined. In the context ofJohn 17, the parameters of Christian unity are clearly established. From the verse citedabove, we see that Christian unity is limited to those who believe in Jesus through the wordof the apostles. It is a true spiritual unity, received not through formal succession or institu-tional alliances, but through faith in the specific teachings of the apostle; that is, the gospel.

Earlier, Jesus prays regarding his disciples, "I do not ask that you take them out of theworld, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am notof the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth" (Jn 17:15-17, ESV). NoticeChrist's parameters for unity: First, God's unity is different than the world's unity. Theworld has its own definition of unity, which requires laying down everything that divides inorder to cooperate for the common good. But Jesus says that neither he nor his disciples areof the world. Christians are intrinsically different, and their very purpose for remaining inthe world is to introduce a unity based not upon compromise but on truth. Second, we seethat the unity Christ desires is God-initiated. Jesus prays in verse 17, "Sanctify them (i.e. setthem apart) by in the truth; your word is truth." God intentionally separates His peoplefrom the world in order to make them one for His own purpose. Third, we see that it is notan all-inclusive unity but is predicated on separation between those who are in the truth (i.e.who believe the Bible and the words of the apostles) and those who are outside of the truth.

I am happy to promote Christian unity, so long as it is rooted firmly in the foundation ofScripture and the truth of the gospel. In these things, all true Christians are one.

words I'd like to retract butother words I'm glad I sharedwith someone who was hurt-ing. There were the several suc-cessful work-related out-comes that cheered the heartwhile the sad news of a sud-den and totally unexpecteddeath in the community leftmany in shock and sadness.Tea with friends plus aChamber of Commerce lun-cheon with colleagues eachprovided pleasant companyand encouraging conversa-tions. Winding up the week,I prepared for the next day'strade show with Saturdayspent promoting the servicesand products offered by ourhome-based businesses.Above all these was a won-derful visit with family. Butback to the question: whatshould I include in this ar-ticle? From among so much,what's the answer? Simplyput, it all boils down to amatter of choice.

I've been thinking a lot

about options lately. Choos-ing what to write about eachweek is high on my list of im-portance but over these pastseveral months I've foundmyself having to make eventougher decisions regardingthe way I spend my time andmy energy. How long do Iwant to continue working fulltime? Given my health relatedchallenges how long am I ableto contribute volunteerhours and to whichorganization(s)? If I couldonly keep three things in mylife, what would those thingsbe and in what order of pri-ority?

than most. Not only did we get in trouble for calling each other names but apparently ourpoor use of the English Language was a real insult to her parenting skills.

I thought about using my Mom's approach to name-calling but I'm not sure it was reallyfitting any more. She used to correct the grammar of whoever was doing the name-calling, somuch so that it actually got too frustrating to bother with your little sister anymore. Nowa-days, teenagers speak in code. They say things like OMG, K, YOLO, TTYL and LOL. Theonly way to know if your child is calling their sibling a name is by the tone. So, they have gonepast the point of no return when it comes to proper use of the English Language. They havecreated a language all of their own. So, I decided it was time to teach them how to speakmine. I told them, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

Well, my house got quiet. Real quiet.I made each of them write a list of nice things about the other. This is a few of the things

they came up with.My son said:1. She's athletic because she does gym, sometimes2. She's stylish, sometimes3. She's funny, sometimes (have you seen her golf)He wasn't exactly getting the idea of saying something nice. I know this much about the

English language. When you give someone a compliment, you do not usually include "some-times" after it and don't think that his sister wasn't catching on.

So next was her turn and she said:1. He's nice because he always shares his TV with me.Well played.

Blue Environmental hasadded yet another way tohelp out the environmentand keep more garbage outof the landfill. They havesigned a deal with a plasticsrecycling company calledTerracyle, which will see BlueEarth Environmental acceptparticular types of coffeedisks for recycling, namelyNescafe and Tassimo.

In 2014, 9.8 billion K-Cups/disks were sold world-wide and if lined up end-to-end, those discarded discswould contain enough plas-tic to circle the globe morethan 10 times. RecyclingNescafe and Tassimo coffeedisks, which are only two ofseveral brands, will be a stepin the right direction.

"Whenever they ask us tocollect those items, we sendthem in and then that moneycan be donated to a non-profit organization in ourcommunity,"said RoseMcInnes, who is the owner/operator of Blue Earth En-vironmental in Weyburn.The money that is donatedcomes from credits thatTerracycle donates for eachcoffee disk received. Themoney in turn is then do-nated to the chosen organi-zations which include TheFamily Place, WeyburnWork-Kin Shop, theWeyburn Humane Societyand Weyburn MentalHealth.

Currently the disks can berecycled by either signing upfor the Blue Bin recyclingservice or by delivering themdirectly to Blue Earth Envi-ronmental. OBITUARYBREMS, Lillian Mary Annie (nee Levesque). September13, 1925 - April 11, 2015. Lillian Brems, late of Carlyle, SK.passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the age of 89years, in the Regina General Hospital as a result of a heartcondition. Lil did not let this stand in her way and she en-joyed her garden and flowers. She also babysat and raisedmany children. Lil was predeceased by her parents Ludgerand Alice Levesque; husband Fedde; son Robert; brotherLeo (Katie) Levesque; sister Irene (Bill) Anderson. Lillian issurvived by her sons Michael and Kelly; daughter Susan;grandsons Christopher (Beth), Harley, Matthew (Sonja) andMichael; granddaughter Mykayla; great-grandsons Abel andKayden; great- granddaughter Sasha; brother Albert(Rosaline) Levesque. At Lil's request, no service will be held.

Today I attended a breakfast for cancer survivors andguests at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. The WeyburnComp students hosted the event and I am thankful that theytook the time to honour those of us who have fought andare still fighting the battle and for those who are our friendsand relatives.

Cancer is the dreaded disease that we all fear and thatsends our heart into our throat when we hear the news. Forme, cancer came twice - as thyroid cancer and as colorectalcancer. I've had multiple surgeries along with radiation andchemo.

What would my life be like without our beloved HealthCare system? I would owe hundreds of thousands of dollarsand probably never be out of debt. Tommy Douglas had adream and because of that dream, I've never known life with-out health care. Neither have my children.

The Harper government has failed to renew the HealthAccord with the provinces and money in the form of trans-fer payments from the federal government is decreasing,putting pressure on provincial governments to looks at al-ternative ways to provide health services. I can't imagine whatthis will look like and I see that health care for me as I ageand for my children and grandchildren will not be fundedas it is today if we continue on this path.

For the sake of our friends and family, for the sake of thosewho have suffered from cancer and have been taken from ustoo soon, think about health care when you vote and what itwill look like if we don't stop the downward slide.

WCS hosted pre-district badminton on April 21 andbadminton districts on April 25 in the Cugnet Centre.

A recent proclamation was signed by Mayor Debra But-ton, proclaiming April 28, a Day of Mourning for theCity of Weyburn. April 28 was proclaimed "Day of Mourn-ing" by an Act of parliament on February 1, 1991. It is inrecognition of the more than 1000 Canadian workers whoare killed on the job, thousands more who are perma-nently disabled and hundreds of thousands who are in-jured and thousands of others who die from cancer, lungdisease, and other ailments caused by exposure to toxicsubstances at their workplaces.

The Canadian Labour Congress chose April 28 as a dayof mourning as an opportunity to remember the maximumsacrifice workers have been forced to make in order to make

April 28 named National Day of Mourninga living, a day to renew approaches to governments fortougher occupational health and safety standards and moreeffective compensation and as a day to rededicate ourselvesto the goal of making Canada's workplaces safer.

The Weyburn Labour District Council will host a Me-morial Ceremony at the TC Douglas Calvary Centre onApril 28 at 6:30 p.m.

"We read the names, we light the candles on their behalfand just generally remember them, remember all workerswho were injured on the job and rededicate ourselves totrying to make our workplaces safer" said council presi-dent, Wanda Bartlett.

Youth group ‘rises up’ to assist

Members of the Youth group "Youth Rising Up" were at the Spring Trade and Craft fair held at the KnoxPresbyterian Church on April 18. The children were selling items to raise money for the child they adoptedseven years ago, from the World Vision Organization. The group has adopted a boy by the name of Misseal,who lives in Nicaragua. Members of the youth group will use the money raised to help fund the adoption,send him letters and parcels. The strongest athletes from across the country were in St.John's, NL from April 7-11 competing at the CanadianPowerlifting Union National Championships. This year's Na-tional Championship was the biggest ever, with over 350 ofCanada's strongest men and women of all ages competingfor the title of National Champion.

Weyburn was represented by four athletes. Mikayla Lohsecompeted in the 52 kg sub-junior category in both the Clas-sic and Equipped competitions. In the Classic competition,Mikayla squatted a new National record of 100.5kg (222lbs). Mikayla also had a bench press of 50 kg (110 lbs) and adeadlift of 127.5kg (281 lbs). Mikayla totalled 278 kg on herway to a gold medal.

In the equipped division, which allows lifters to wear kneewraps and supportive suits, Mikayla once again displayedher dominance, finishing with a 117.5 kg (259 lbs) squatand a new National Record bench press of 58 kg (128lbs).The most impressive result of the week for Mikayla came inthe deadlift, where she hit a huge National record of 156 kg(344 lbs), eclipsing not only the sub-junior record but alsothe Junior (under 23) and the Open (any age) Nationalrecord at just 17 years of age. Mikayla totalled 331.5kg,coming home with her second gold medal of the week.

“Mikayla's deadlift is an extremely impressive feat ofstrength,” said coach Ryan Fowler. “There are very few 17year-olds who are deadlifting more than triple their ownbody weight. Mikayla is now within 4.5 kgs of breaking theWorld Record deadlift, currently owned by AnnaFilimonova of Russia.”

Brittinay Rowland also competed in the equipped divi-sion in the 84+ kg Junior category. This was Brittinay's firstyear in the Junior category and she had a very good showingmoving up an age category. Brittinay had a 180 kg (397 lbs)squat, a 102.5 kg (226 lbs) bench press and a 180 kg (397lbs) deadlift. Brittinay finished with a total of 462.5 kg,enough to bring home the Gold medal and the crown ofNational Champion for the fourth year in a row.

“Brittinay once again lifted very well, moving up into theJunior age category has given her some new goals to worktowards,” said coach Fowler. “She struggled with her squatat this competition, but everything else was a personal best,and at Nationals after having travelled most of the way acrossthe country to compete, that is extremely impressive.”

Lohse breaks National records - sets sight on World record

Heidi Fowler competed in the classic Bench Press champi-onship where she finished with a 75 kg (165 lbs) bench press.Her bench was enough to win her a silver medal. “This iseven more impressive as she hasn't lifted at Nationals since2012 due to having our two kids,” said coach and husband,Fowler. “I am proud of the work she has put in allowing herto get back to the National stage and compete at the Na-tional Championship only seven months following the birthof our second son!”

Coach Fowler also competed in his 14th straight NationalChampionship. Fowler finished with a squat of 335 kg (739lbs), a personal best bench press of 252.5 kg (557 lbs) and apersonal best deadlift of 302.5 kg (667 lbs). Fowler finishedwith a 890 kg total and a silver medal.

“Considering I lifted against my brother-in-law, who hitthe biggest squat and biggest total in Canadian Powerliftinghistory and was still able to come home with second place, Iam pretty happy with that result.” Fowler's brother-in-law,Ryan Stinn of Moose Jaw squatted a new Canadian recordof 390 kg (860 lbs) and became only the second powerliftingin Canada to total over 1000 kg, hitting 1003kg.

All four Weyburn athletes will be competing at the 2015North American Powerlifting Championships, being heldJuly 8-11 in Moose Jaw at the Heritage Inn. Weyburn willalso play host to the 2015 Provincial Powerlifting Champi-onship, being held September 12.
