Two police officers sworn inThe Weyburn Police Department doors are revolving. After seeing Sergeant Trevor Hughes
retire last month and Sergeant Garth Oberkirsch retire last week, the doors have swungopen to welcome two new much-needed officers. These officers will fill two of the vacantspots at the department.
Family and friends joined members of the Board of Police Commissioners and ChiefMarlo Pritchard at the swearing in ceremony held January 9 at Police Headquarters.Pritchard, who led the ceremony, discussed the importance of wearing the badge the re-cruits will receive after completing their five months of training. Once an officer wears abadge, duty to others takes precedence over self. Mayor Debra Button, who is a member ofthe Weyburn Board of Police Commissioners, along with fellow members Andrew Arskyand Don Ehman, also attended the event.
Ehman led the officers, beginning with Constable Alyssa Kazcmar, in the ceremony.Kazcmar has been living in Regina for several years, where she has worked with ChildProtective Services, an experience which will benefit her in her new role at the department.Constable Gord Gateman, who has already spent four years volunteering with the WeyburnFire Department, was next to be sworn in. Gateman has lived in Weyburn for the past sixyears, and his volunteering at the local fire station is indicative of his special interest inemergency services. To conclude the swearing in ceremony, everyone was invited to sharecoffee and cake with the new Constables.

Police investigate vehicle vandalism/break-insOn January 11, police
conducted a vehicle stopand found the driver, a 29year-old male to be underthe influence of alcohol.The male was charged withdriving a vehicle while im-paired and refusal to pro-vide a breath sample. Theaccused was later releasedfrom custody and will makehis first court appearancelater this month.
Also on January 11, afterreceiving a call of a distur-bance, police attended to adomestic dispute and founda male and female arguing.One party involved, a 41year-old male, was arrestedfor breach of the peace andlodged in cells until sober.
Further on January 11,police attended to a two ve-hicle accident at the intersec-tion of Prairie Avenue andSecond Street. There wereno injuries, though bothvehicles sustained significantdamage. Slippery road con-ditions were a factor in theaccident.
On January 10, while onpatrol, police observed twovehicles parked in the 900and 1000 block CoteauAvenue that had appearedto have been entered. Theregistered owners were lo-cated and it was determinedthat only small items werestolen and no damage wasdone to the vehicles.
Also on January 10, po-lice received a complaint ofa mischief after the victimreported his vehicle, whichhad been parked in the 500block of Coteau Avenue,had both side mirrors dam-aged. The incident remainsunder investigation.
Further on January 10,police attended to Mac's Con-venience store for a complaintof a male causing a distur-bance and bothering pa-trons. Police located a 53year-old male who was intoxi-cated. He was arrested andlodged in cells until sober.
On January 8, while onpatrol, police conducted avehicle stop and found thedriver, a 25 year-old malefrom Alberta, had beendrinking alcohol. The sub-sequent investigation re-sulted in a three day driversuspension, a 30 day im-pound of his vehicle, as wellas a ticket for driving whiledisqualified.
Also on January 8, policereceived a complaint of afraud after the victim re-ported their credit card hadbeen fraudulently used tomake purchases. The victimwas not aware of when orhow the card had beencompromised. The incidentremains under investigation.

As a result in changes toFederal RCMP policy andfees, as well as local policy, anew process for CriminalRecord Checks was imple-mented by the Weyburn Po-lice Service effective January15, 2015. A fee structurechange at the Federal leveland the implementation ofnew digital fingerprint tech-nology has necessitated anincrease in fees. Checks, forother than volunteers, will beincreased to a maximum of$75.00. Part of this fee iscollected on behalf of theFederal Government, overwhich we have no control.Local fees have not increasedsince 2009 but the time ittakes to process them hasincreased significantly. This
will be partly reflected in thenew fee at the local level. Wewill continue to process le-gitimate Volunteer applica-tions for no fee. However,
applicants claiming Volun-teer status must provide aletter from their volunteerorganization requesting thecheck.

Where do we begin?By Linda Wegner
Well, we've arrived. It's 2015, we're all a year older and our world has changed. If you'relike me I'm already looking ahead for new opportunities for growth, change and forservice but always with the understanding that there are new challenges awaiting me. As Ioften do, I turned to Google to articulate my thoughts. Here's a quote by some anony-mous scribe: "A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out theother."
I like that one because it describes exactly the effectiveness of New Year resolutions in mylife. What I do believe in, though, is a commitment to keep on learning and growing for aslong as I live. Next step? Where do I begin and how do I keep going?
Several first things, at least according to articles I've read, include setting realistic goalsand taking vital first steps. This year I am determined to do more recreational reading andI'm delighted to say that I've already started by devouring, for first time ever, E.B. White'sbrilliant story, "Charlotte's Web". What proof that it's never too late to discover treasures!
Next, I'm told, it's important to confirm the decision by writing it down, then tellingsomeone else. In other words, becoming accountable. When life gets difficult, when emo-tions are battered or when the body begins to slow down, knowing that someone else ischeering for you makes the journey easier. It also makes it harder to quit.
While some folks are encouragers, there are always those people and situations thatdrain one's energy and resolve. Thankfully, it's absolutely necessary and perfectly okay toremove them from our circle of life influencers.

The secret to restDear Friends we live in a very tense, uptight and fast paced world filled with hurry...they
call it the Rat race. Just when you thought you were getting ahead, along come faster rats.But remember, he who wins the rat race is still a rat. We need to learn how to experience rest.If all we needed was physical rest we can always take a nap. If we needed only emotional rest,we can always take a vacation. But where can we find spiritual rest?
How can we obtain relief regarding the deepest issues of life at the deepest level of ourhearts? The more things change the more they stay the same.
Augustine of Hippo said this and I quote:“Because God has made us for Himself, our hearts are restless until they rest in Him.”Jesus spoke to this very issue more than 2000 years ago in the Bible in Matthew 11:28-30.“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke
upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest foryour souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
The Message which is a contemporary translation reads:“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and
you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me-watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.” (PP)
So what do we hear the Word of God saying? If we are tired, worn out, burnt out we needto respond to the invitation of our Savior the Lord Jesus.
We can come to Jesus with confidence because He also said in John 6:37, “All that theFather gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”
Dear Friends, let me assure you that each time you go to God, He is waiting to welcome youwith open arms. Let not pride, deception of the enemy, ignorance make us miss this greatinvitation. To whom is this invitation? To ALL who are tired, worn out and burnt out on religion.
What is the biblical context of this verse? In Jesus time, other than the law of Moses, thereligious leaders had made hundreds of additional burdens related to keeping the minutestdetails of the law. I believe Jesus is saying, unlike the Pharisees, He is not a task master but aburden bearer.
“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you willfind rest for your souls.” A pair of connected oxen was typically called a yoke of oxen. Usedmetaphorically to refer to submission to a teacher. In New Testament times the phrase, “to takethe yoke of” was used by rabbis to refer to “becoming a submitted pupil of a teacher.”
The word has two dominant figurative ideas. 1. The yoke of rules and religion. MANSYOKE; 2. The yoke of relationship. JESUS YOKE.
One day a man went by to see a farmer who was plowing his field with a team of oxen. Theman noticed that one of the animals was seemingly a little bigger than the other so he askedhim about it. The response from the farmer was very interesting. He said that the big animalwas an older animal that was well trained and the smaller one was a young animal that wasnew to the yoke. The man went on to inquire as to why he put them together and this is theanswer that He got. “Well you see, it's like this. That older ox is the best ox that I have everhad; he knows his way around the field. The reason I put the younger one with him is so theolder, more knowledgeable ox could teach him how to plow. If I never put them together theyounger one would never learn. By himself the younger ox would pull himself to death, buttogether he learns to cooperate with and rest in the strength of the older ox.”
Does your life feel like the ox whose pulling himself to death? Rest comes from obedienceto Jesus' commands. COME to Me, TAKE My yoke upon you, LEARN from Me.
Finally Jesus says: “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. The word easy is from theGreek word Crestos which means to be useful, pleasant, good, and comfortable.”
Let me ask you. Have you become weary of life? Has the burdens of life- sin, sickness,depression, worries- emotional, financial, physical whatever is the case, had a toll on you? Thendo not wait a second. Now is the time to unload all your burdens to the burden bearer.

The perfect man
that is why past generations couldn't locate this infamous "perfect man". They didn't havethe technology! ) I discovered him over the holiday season and my husband was there for my'ah ha' moment.
We were at a local business for a Christmas lunch when the Purolator man showed up .He had already stopped at our place, and we weren't home, so when he noticed that we werenot there, he mentioned that he had a parcel in the truck for me that he hadn't been ableto drop off. I don't know about you but I am like a kid in the candy store when a purchasearrives. So, he brought in the parcel for me. Now remember one thing , when you receive theparcel by Purolator, you have already previously paid for it, which in turn means it almostfeels like it's free. (Amazing how my mind works.)
Seems like this man in a uniform is randomly showing up with a gift for you! So this iswhere the conversation went that day…between all the couples around the table. I decidedthe Purolator delivery man is really the perfect man. I mean, he shows up in uniform, like allthe best men do and brings you parcels. Not only does he bring you these parcels right toyour door, he seems genuinely happy to have you open the door (messy hair and pajamas ornot) because that means he does not have to stop here again. This man in uniform, is quiteaware that you have made an online purchase. Not only does he not care that now youpurchased yet another product online (and spent all the money on your credit card you justpaid off), he genuinely likes the idea because that means job security for him.
Not only that, this man actually saves you on fuel money. No more trips to the city (whichmy husband figures cost an arm and leg these days for fuel. (Not sure what limbs are goingfor these days). So it's a win for me and a win for my husband!
In the end, the Purolator man shows up happy as can be, drops off parcels throughoutthe year (way better than Santa) and doesn't discourage your shopping addiction. Soundsto me like The Perfect Man!○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○

Letter to the Editor:Reader thankful for "Merry Christmas"
I would like to express my appreciation for the beautiful street decorations provided by the Weyburn Fire Depart-ment and others responsible which make our city attractive and festive during the Christmas season. I would also liketo commend the city merchants who expressed their customer appreciation with "Merry Christmas." To those whowent a step further and used a religious picture, I congratulate them even more.
In a recent poll by one of our weekly papers, ninety-three percent preferred "Merry Christmas" as the seasongreeting. A mere seven percent favoured "Happy Holidays." I hope such an overwhelming majority will send a messagefor next year. Christmas is Christmas because we celebrate the birth of Christ, so let us favor the traditional greetingwhich most Weyburnites prefer.
By the way, there is only one place for the Pioneer Women statue where it will be most seen and admired by many,and that is at the corner of Fifth Street and First Avenue NE.
