The yearbook staff wants to remind parent’s that now is the time to be thinking about purchasing a Parent
Appreciation Ad in the back of the 2012 yearbook for their graduating seniors.
"We will be mailing out information in October," said Yvonne Johnson, yearbook sponsor, "and putting it
on our website right after October break."
To access the information on the web site, click on the Chieftain Yearbook link at the bottom of Westwood's
home page.
BUY A YEARBOOK
Have you considered giving your child the Westwood 2012 yearbook as a gift? The yearbook would make a
perfect birthday or holiday gift for your student.
Yearbooks can be purchased in the Westwood Bookstore or online from our yearbook company, Josten's. If
you purchase it online, you can also add signing pages, and even get it personalized. To order the book
online, simply go to Westwood's home page and click on School Publications > Chieftain Yearbook >
Purchasing this year's yearbook.
Cost of the book is $60, until Nov. 17, after that date it goes up...so order soon. All books sold before Nov.
17 will include the student's name stamped on it.
So order now, either in the Westwood Bookstore or online. Then go to the Westwood Yearbook Page and
download a certificate that you can give your child to show you bought them a book as a gift. [The
certificate will not allow them to pick up a book. They must be on the official buy list to pick up a book on
distribution day. But it will serve as a great reminder if you purchased one!]

Westwood Band in need of instruments
The Westwood Band program is quickly expanding and is expecting even more growth in
the coming years. Our inventory of school-owned instruments, however, is not equipped to
handle these numbers to supply our talented students with playable instruments. If you
happen to have any instruments at home you used to play, or if your students no longer play
(shame on them, they should still be in band!), please consider donating the instrument to the
Westwood Band program. Tax deductions for you donation are available for those who
qualify.
Please help our musician continue to grow and do amazing things for our community! All
kinds of instruments are in need; even they might require some repairs. Contact Mr. Steven
Brazier at [email protected] or call (480) 472-4442 for more information.
Thank you very much for your support.

What’s new in Westwood Dance?
This year Westwood Girls P.E. is happy to welcome Mrs. Layton to the Westwood staff as the new dance
teacher. Mrs. Layton is an Arizona native who has taught around the valley for the last 10 years. She started her teaching
career at the Mesa Arts Center in a decade ago. She has degrees in Dance, English and Technology Education. She taught
for the past 4 years at Central High School in Phoenix. She is excited to be joining our community and has big plans for
the year.
In October the dance department will be starting a partnership with local dance company Dulce Dance Company
by having members of Dulce come in as guest artists for the dance classes. Dulce Dance Company is a local
Contemporary Modern Dance Company emphasizing in technical artistic expression. Its’ mission is to choreograph and
perform our ideas, emotions and stories through dance and to enrich our community, through the timeless universal
language of dance. This is Dulce Dance Company’s 6th season in operation. Every student will have the opportunity to
participate in one of these guest artist dances and perform them in the December concert.
Also in October dance students will get the opportunity to see a high school matinee of Scorpius Dance Theaters dance
drama “A Vampire’s Tale” on October 20th. Scorpius Dance Theatre is observing its eleventh season in operation. The
contemporary dance company has been a constant presence in the metropolitan Phoenix arts community since its
inception in 1999. Lisa Starry’s A Vampire Tale, is tersely touted as “the ‘Nutcracker’ of Halloween” and has become a
staple of the fall dance season for the last six years. The show has won awards as the best Modern Dance Performance
by the Arizona Republic.
Mrs. Layton will be taking dancers to local colleges in November and December to help prepare them for their
transition into higher education. In November the WDC (Westwood Dance Company) members will participate in ASU’s
high school Symposium for dance. They will take classes from ASU professors and watch a performance of college level
dance pieces. In December Senior dance students will have the opportunity to visit SCC and participate in the school “A
Day in the Life of an SCC Dancer.” Students will shadow a dance major through their dance classes and have the
opportunity to take a tour of the campus and learn about enrollment and financial aid.
Students will also have the opportunity of choreographing their own pieces and auditioning them for the Fall dance
concert, “Decades of Dance.” The concert will explore trends in the art of dance through the 20th and 21st Century and
will be on December 2nd at 7pm in the Westwood High School Auditorium. Please come out and support the dance
students as they strive for excellence in dance.

Mexican Gartersnake (Thamnophis eques)
Westwood Science Department joins the Gartersnake Conservation Working Group
Captive Breeding Program.
Evidence suggests that wild populations of the Mexican Gartersnake (Thamnophis eques) and
Narrow-headed Gartersnake (Thamnophis rufipunctatus) are in decline. These snakes have
apparently disappeared from portions of their historic ranges in Arizona and New Mexico. The
United States Fish and Wildlife Service and Arizona Game and Fish Department are working
in conjunction with the Phoenix Zoo, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Phoenix
Herpetological Society, and Westwood High School to establish captive breeding colonies for
these two species of snake. As part of this program the Westwood Science Department has
received a colony of Mexican Gartersnakes. The goal is to have the snakes produce offspring
that can supplement or replace wild populations.
