Welcome Letter
to the University of York!
Starting at a new University can be a little daunting. Thats why the University and the Graduate Students Association (GSA) have teamed up to produce a week of welcome talks, events and socials to help you settle down.
Get to know campus, check out the local supermarkets, have a chilling experience on a Ghost Tour, or just get to know what the University can offer you while youre studying here.
All of the events are free and you can just turn up. However some are ticketed which must be booked online. Some events are also targeted specifically to international students, though all students are welcome to go along. Events with a research symbol are restricted to research students only, and not students studying a taught programme. Please see the key below for the icons to look out for.
If you need any help or advice over the next few days, look out for volunteers wearing yellow Welcome t-shirts. Otherwise, feel free to contact either the GSA or Student Support services (see page opposite).
Although this booklet provides most of the events during the week, they are subject to change so keep an eye out on www.yorkgsa.org/welcome through-out the week for updates!
If Welcome Week isnt enough for you, the GSA runs numerous events during the rest of the year. These extend from social events to academic support and advice to trips across the country. Youre more than welcome to organise your own events with us too!
Enjoy your time at York!

Your Key Contacts
University Student Support
Graduate Students Association
The Student Support Hub, located in Market Square, is the first point of contact for all central student support related enquiries.
Staff based in the Student Support Hub provide advice about international support, immigration, financial hardship, Direct Loans, housing rights, managing a budget, council tax and many other practical matters.
The GSA is the primary representative body for all registered postgraduate students at the University of York. Whether youre doing a Masters and here for a year, or a PhD and here for a few years, get to know your GSA and get involved!
We aim to provide a social community for postgraduates through our dedicated postgraduate welcome week, regular events, trips and free sport see the back of this booklet for more information. We also represent postgraduate views on a variety of university committees, provide academic and welfare support and offer advice on a wide variety of issues.
The Student Support Hub is where information is given and appointments made for the Open Door Team, for emotional and psychological support, and Disability Services.
www.york.ac.uk/sshub
The University of York is one of few universities in the UK to have a students association specifically for postgraduates. All our officers are elected annually if youd like to help us and become a voluntary officer, come and talk to us about our election taking place towards the end of October.

Get Involved
Welcome Week 2014
How you can get involved
STAND FOR ElECTIONFrom voluntary council positions to paid officer roles, the GSA is a great place to improve and engage with postgraduate life. We have elections twice a year - once in October and once in May, which gives you ample opportunity to put your name forward.
Find out more on:www.yorkgsa.org/representation
Alternatively, get involved in your department by becoming a course representative. Not only will this give you a direct opportunity to influence your department, but will also give you the chance to work with other course representatives across campus.
PARTICIPATE IN A NETWORKPostgraduate Networks are great places to meet new and interesting people. If youre a PhD student, our PhD Network is always offering opportunities to socialise and share what youre researching with others.
Our LGBTQ network is a great way to meet other postgraduates who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer. The Family network caters for students with children.
And you can always create your own too!
COME AlONG TO OUR TRIPS & EVENTSWere always running all sorts of events and trips. These have included trips all across the UK from the spires of Edinburgh to the local seaside at Filey. Its a great and affordable way to see all the great attractions that the UK has to offer, while also meeting other students and making new friends.
We also have a packed events calendar, with spooky Halloween parties to mellow Jazz nights and even a pub night or two.
Keep up to date on all of these at:www.yorkgsa.org/events
Getting involved in the GSA is a great way to make friends at the University of York. Here are 3 simple ways to make the most of your time here.
