Your step-by- step guide

In the weeks leading up to the event

• Preparation is key. Use the customised training

plan included in this pack to get yourself ready.

• Win the battle against the blisters: find a pair of

sturdy trainers and wear them in.

• Start raising money: the more you can raise,

the sooner we can beat cancer.

• Check the Shine website and Facebook page

to get the very latest event information.

In the final few days

• Sleep well and rest. You’ll need to conserve your

energy for your walk.

• Plan your journey. Decide how you are going to

get to and from the event, remembering public

transport will be limited overnight. See tfl.gov.uk

• Gear up for the night ahead with accessories

to light the way. Need inspiration? Turn to the

‘Make the most of Shine’ page in this booklet.

• Eat sufficient carbohydrates to help you sustain

your energy levels on the day itself.

On event night• Check the weather forecast and make sure you layer

up. It can get very cold walking through the night.

• Snacks and cold drinks will be available at pit stops along the route. But do bring your own just in case you need them.

• Pack a small bag with essentials such as money, your mobile phone, a torch and plasters to carry with you as you walk.

• Wear your running number on the front of your Shine t-shirt and your ‘I’m Shining for’ sign on your back. Don’t forget safety pins.

• Remember you don’t need to register when you arrive at the event.

• Do bring along your friends and family to help cheer you on!

• Don’t worry, toilets and first aid will be available at pit stops along the route.

• Do bring along any unwanted clothes, accessories, books and CDs to hand in at the Donation Station.

Meet Ann, a greatreason to Shine

“Everyday is important and precious. Thank you for signing up to Shine 2013 and good luck raising as much money as possible for this amazing charity.”

Ann started supporting Cancer Research UK in 2007 unaware thatshe herself had early stage breast cancer. Ann later found that atumour had developed in the cavity between her lungs which hadwrapped itself around the blood vessels of her heart. In 2012, Ann was told a further tumour had developed in her breast. Despite this, Ann supported Shine last year, whilst undergoing chemotherapy.

Ann has already gone the distance against cancer. Every step that you, your friends and your family take will help save more lives, just like Ann’s.
