WELCOME TO BURHAM

We would like to welcome you warmly to our village and hope that you will quickly feel part of our village community. This booklet has been compiled to give you information about the various facilities, clubs, organisations and businesses offering local services.

The original village was sited around Old St Mary’s Church close to the river crossing to Snodland. The Redundant Churches Trust now maintains the Church. With the development of the chalk pits, which supplied the raw materials for the extensive cement works (now long since closed), the present village was developed in the mid nineteenth century. Small modern housing developments have taken place in the last fifty years.

There is easy access to the North Downs by many bridle ways and footpaths. The Kent Wildlife Trust is doing much work to enhance the flora and fauna.

Despite its rural setting Burham has excellent road and rail links to the continent and S E England.

The Medical Practice covers the villages of Burham and Eccles. There are three General Practitioners and a full range of ancillary staff. The Practice has its own dispensary.

Railways

There are mainline stations at Maidstone, Chatham and Rochester with fast and frequent services to London and the Kent coast.

The nearest station for the high speed rail link is at Ebbsfleet with services to London and the Channel Tunnel and beyond.

Buses

The 155 bus runs to and from Chatham, via Rochester to Maidstone. This service is provided by Arriva. For enquiries phone (01634) 283600 or (01622) 690577.Timetables are displayed at the bus shelters in the village, but as a quick reference evening buses run at the following times:

Free Buses

On Tuesdays there is a free bus to Sainsbury’s leaving the village at approx 9.30 a.m.

On Wednesdays there is a free bus to Tesco leaving the village at 10.00 a.m. approx

THE CHURCH IN BURHAMALL SAINTS CHURCH, WOULDHAM

The Parish Church is All Saints Church in Wouldham. Burham is part of the Burham & Wouldham Parish in the Diocese of Rochester. The Church, of Saxon origin, is situated at the end of the High Street and on the bank of the Medway.

Up to date information about the Services, events, how to contact the Rector, Church Wardens, other church members and how to get access to the Church are in the Burham & Wouldham Parish Magazine which is available to view on the website. Some Services are also held in the Old School Community Centre, Burham and at St Mary’s Church in Burham.

ST MARY’S CHURCH, BurhamThis now a redundant church which is maintained by the Churches’ Conservation Trust. It is usually open during the day. Occasional services are held there and advertised in the Parish Magazine which is attached to this website.  It is close to the old river Medway crossing and dates back to the 1200’s.

PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Junior School moved to the modern building in Bell Lane in 1984, soon followed by the Infants School. All classes are housed in modern permanent buildings. The school draws pupils from Burham and equally from further afield. It enjoys a good reputation for high academic standards, a strong Christian ethos and a caring atmosphere.

There is a strong governing body and an active Parent Teacher Association.

This is held Monday-Friday in the Village Hall for all children aged 2½ - 5 years. This is a long established group with caring experienced staff. Ofsted report 2011/2012 “Outstanding”

Burham Village Hall

This is a large modern building in the centre of the village adjacent to the Recreation Ground. It is the venue for a wide range of activities including charity events, Burham Music Hall, short mat bowls, wedding receptions and the Burham Pre School.

Burham Community Centre

This was formerly the Infants School. It was purchased by the Parish Council and totally refurbished. Further developments have taken place to provide changing facilities for Burham Football Club.

Burham Church Halls

There is a main Hall and a smaller Meeting Room, suitable for up to 16 people.

MOBILE LIBRARY

This visits the village every Tuesday 3.00 – 4.00 p.m. The library vehicle is parked in the Village Hall car park.

REFUSE COLLECTION

Each household has two wheeled bins and a green box.

In the green box you can place newspapers, magazines, telephone directories and food and drinks cans. The paper contents are recycled into paper.

In the green lidded bin you can place food waste, garden waste and cardboard. This is recycled into compost and sent to local farms.Note: Cardboard and paper can also be placed in the recycling bin adjacent to the Village Hall. This generates income for the village (over £2,200 raised in 2012/13)

All other waste goes into the black lidded bin and is then incinerated to generate electricity.

The green box and green bin are emptied one week, the black bin the next week.

BULKY REFUSE COLLECTION

The collection vehicle is stationed in the Village Hall car park from 8.00 – 9.00 a.m. on the second Saturday in each month.

RECYCLING BANKS

Containers are sited adjacent to the Village Hall for cans, plastic bottles, textiles/shoes and green/clear/brown glass and cardboard/paper.

VILLAGE CLUBS AND ORGANISATIONS

Burham Sure Start CentreWe offer the following services to children and families: A variety of play sessions and groups for children aged 0-5 years.  Courses and groups for parents/carers including adult education courses and ante-natal and post natal groups.  Help for parents to access family support

Burham Football ClubThe Club was formed in 2003 and there are now 2 adult teams and 2 teams for youngsters. The Club now has its own changing facilities at the Community Centre when outer buildings were refurbished in 2005.

Burham Music HallThis was formed in the early 1970’s. 4 shows are produced over two weekends in March. All the performers are non-professional and the shows include sketches, musical numbers and solos.

Short Mat Bowls ClubThe Club was established 15 years ago and has 30 members. The Club is open to all adult age groups and meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Thursday afternoons in the Village Hall.

Women’s InstituteThe WI meets on the third Tuesday of each month, at the Village Hall. There is a programme of outside speakers. The WI has been established 25 years.
