Dear Friends, Just some quick notes here to give you a flavour of what’s going on:
This is always a lovely time of the year when the evenings are getting
lighter, spring flowers are well sprung and the birds are nesting. It’s a joy
to be getting out and about after the dark and chill of the winter. You
might bump into the Burham Walkers (page 4) who will be out enjoying
the countryside and I see that there’s a group who are out clearing the
graveyard from overgrowth on those old graves and people are definitely
getting busy also in their gardens and allotments (page19)
This is our Easter Edition. Of course there are our Easter Services (pages
3 & 7) in the churches were you can find some precious times for quiet
reflection and the special time of joy on Easter Sunday. Also the churches
will be full of flowers at this time (page 2)
There are Easter activities going on for the children and families and
there’s some traditional fun with Easter bonnets and Easter egg hunts at
the Children’s Centre (page 6).
There is great excitement in both Burham and Wouldham Schools. The
children are having lots of fun working on their art projects to go into the
art competition which is being run by Trenport Plc. There is excitement
too about the judgment that will me made at the end of April. Whatever
the outcome though, it is clear that the schools are thoroughly enjoying
their art projects and learning about their environment at the same time.
We are all very much aware of the roadworks going on for Peters Village
and Trenport have sent news to keep us informed about the traffic
management and road closures for this. (page 17)
Also I’m sure it hasn’t escaped many people’s notice that there are
general and local elections on 7th May. I have been sent information by
the Council (page 8) about these elections so that we can make sure we
are registered and don't miss out on being able to vote. I always feel
strongly about voting as we fought hard for the vote and there a many
people in this world who envy us our democracy.
There’s entertainment to look forward to in May too so don’t miss out on
the fun. Get your tickets for a great live music event by Mosaic (page 6)
and you could also have the excitement of an evening at the Races (page
13) when the racehorses come to Burham School! Both events in aid of
very good causes.
So if you delve inside the Magazine you’ll find there’s a lot going on in

Churchyard Working Group Lately we’ve had a really good response for the working parties in
Wouldham churchyard. Thank you to all those who took part. We would
like to have a group of people who come together on a regular basis to
clear ivy and weeds, tend to uncared-for graves, as well as carrying out
other specified tasks. This will help complement the grass-cutting activity
and keep the churchyard in good order. This work could also be done
alone at a time to suit you.

*BURHAM COMMUNION SERVICE we now have an extra
9am Service of Holy Communion at Burham Community Centre on the
1st Sunday of each month.
The service lasts just over half an hour. There are readings for the day,
a short address and the communion prayers. Children are very welcome.

THE PEW CUSHION PROJECT AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH
This project is proceeding well and anyone interested in joining the
needle workers will be very welcome. We are working tapestry cushions
for the pews in memory of loved ones. The finished cushion will carry a
permanent label with the name of the donor and/or to whom it is dedi-
cated together with the name of the person who has worked the cushion.
Contributors will be contacted when their cushion is ready and informed
at which Service it will be dedicated.
Each cushion measures 52ʺ x 13ʺ and costs £170. Sharing the cost with
others who have expressed an interest is possible so contributions over
£30 are gratefully received. The cushions are worked by volunteers as it is
a non-profit making activity.

At 10.45, those attending the Good Friday Club and those who have walked around the village will meet for a short service led by Rev. Mike Hayes. All are invited. Easter Sunday, 6.30am. The annual Sunrise Service at Bluebell Hill Picnic Site. Our Easter Sunday service will be at the usual time of 10.30am when all are especially welcome for this celebration of Easter. AFTERNOON TEA This will continue as usual each Tuesday from 3.0pm till 4.30 and is open for everyone to join us for a cup of tea, piece of cake and a ‘Fun Quiz’. COUNTRY LUNCH This month’s Country Lunch will be held on Thursday April 8
th
at 1.0.pm. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy a lunch of homemade soup, crusty bread, fruit crumble followed by tea or coffee for which we ask a contribution of £2.50. BOOK EXCHANGE Our Book Exchange this month will be held on Saturday April 4
th from 10.30 till 12.0 when you can exchange books you have read for one
from our extensive collection! You can also enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a piece of cake while meeting up with friends. FILM CLUB Please note that this will take place a week later than usual on Wednesday April 8th when we will be showing the film ‘Ill Met by Moonlight’. This starts at 7.30pm and everyone is most welcome to come and enjoy this film set in Crete during the German occupation of the island. CHARITIES £320 has been sent to a charity supporting children orphaned as a result of Ebola. The money raised at our Film Club, Afternoon Teas, Country Lunch and Book Exchange in April and May will be given to a local charity, the Dandelion Trust which helps disadvantaged children and their families.

News Release Residents urged not to miss chance to vote in
General and local elections
Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council is urging local people to make sure they don’t miss out on their chance to vote in the General and local
elections taking place on Thursday 7 May by registering to vote now before it’s
too late.
In order to be able to vote in person or by post at these elections, residents must
be entered on the Register of Electors and the deadline for receipt of applications
to be on the Register is Monday 20 April. Anyone wishing to vote by post must
also complete and return an application by 5pm on Tuesday 21 April.
In Tonbridge and Malling, elections will be held on 7 May for all 54 Borough
Council seats and all 269 Parish/Town Council seats. On the same day,
residents will also be able to vote in the UK Parliamentary General Election.
Any resident who hasn’t yet registered to vote can apply online at
www.gov.uk/register-to-vote, or contact [email protected] or call 01732
876022 to request a paper form. Any elector who wishes to vote by post can
download an application form from www.tmbc.gov.uk/voting, or request a
paper copy by emailing [email protected] or calling 01732 876022.
Julie Beilby, Acting Returning Officer and Chief Executive of Tonbridge &
Malling Borough Council, says: “This is a great opportunity to have your say on
issues that affect you both at a national and local level but if you don’t register to
vote by 20 April then you will miss your chance. Register online now at
www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and make sure you secure your vote, and your
voice, at election time.”
Anyone wishing to stand as a candidate at the elections should apply to the
Acting Returning Officer for nomination papers. Completed papers must be
returned to the Acting Returning Officer at the Gibson Building, Gibson Drive,
Kings Hill, West Malling ME19 4LZ by 4pm on 9 April 2015. Nomination
papers and guidance are available from the Acting Returning Officer on request
by emailing [email protected] or by calling 01732 876022. For more
information visit the Council’s website www.tmbc.gov.uk/voting.
The current political composition of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council
is: - Conservative - 47; Liberal Democrat – 4; Independent – 1; Labour – 1 The Local Government Boundary Commission for England completed
their review of electoral arrangements in Tonbridge and Malling Borough in
January 2013. The Final Recommendations have been approved by Parliament
and the changes will take effect from the elections in May 2015, when there will
be 54 councillors representing 24 wards. At present there are 53 councillors
representing 26 wards.

Registration Facts…
If you are not registered by 20 April you will lose your right to vote
on 7 May 2015.
Paying council tax does not automatically put you on the register of
electors.
Even though you can’t vote until you’re 18, you can register to vote if you
are 16 or 17.
You must by law give your registration details when requested by the
council, even if you do not wish to vote.
If you are not registered you may find it difficult to open a bank account and
it may affect your credit rating, as the register of electors is often used to
verify a person’s existence and for credit referencing purposes to
counter-act fraud.
The electoral register is used to determine who is eligible for jury service.
Electoral registration is performed locally, and there is currently no
central register of elector
You can register in more than one place, although you have to be able to
show that you spend a ‘considerable degree of residence’ at both addresses.
Owning a property which you do not live at does not make you eligible.
Registration is based on residency only. If you are registered at two addresses
you are able to vote twice in local elections so long as it is for elections for two
different councils.
Students can lawfully register at both their term time address and another
address they are resident at outside of term time.
If you are a British National living overseas you are entitled to vote in UK
General Elections and European Parliamentary Elections for 15 years after
moving abroad. Overseas electors cannot vote at local government elections.
Citizens of other EU countries can only vote in local elections and European
Parliamentary Elections. However, if you are also a citizen of the Common-
wealth (Cyprus or Malta) or the Irish Republic then you qualify to vote in all
elections.
Homeless people, remand prisoners and those in mental institutions (other
than the criminally insane) are able to register.
You cannot vote more than once in any one election. It is illegal to do so and
could result in a fine of up to £5,000

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Election 2015: It’s not too late to receive your nomination papers, contact TMBC
on [email protected], or give them a call on 01732 876022. The deadline for
TMBC to receive nomination papers back is 4pm on Thursday 9 April 2015, so
you need to be quick. Forms should be returned to TMBC in person and should
not be posted. You are strongly advised to make an appointment to deliver the
forms and to deliver them as early as possible to ensure that they can be checked.
Road closures: 1. Court Road, Burham from 7 April for 6 months – prohibition of
traffic at the junction with Rochester Road: Alternative route is via the New Court
Road. 2. Pilgrims Way (Split road) from 13 April 2015, 19.00 – 6.00 for
approximately 3 weeks. Only one section of Pilgrims Way is to be closed at a
time. The alternative route is via Rochester Road, Aylesford, High Street,
Aylesford and Bull Lane, Eccles.
Reports have been received regarding postal scams. Apparently the scammers are
obtaining information on when residents are away for a prolonged periods of
time. They are then fixing their own external post boxes, sorting the post and
applying for credit at the residents address. If you are going away for a period of
time, we would like to suggest that perhaps other arrangements can be made.
Therefore removing any opportunity for the scammers.
As I am sure you are aware, Aylesford Newsprint Ltd called in the administrators
late February. The majority of employees were laid off with immediate effect.
Our thoughts are with the families of those affected.
At the time of going to print, it is our understanding that Margetts Pit should still
have its restoration completed in accordance with the approved scheme. No
further information is available but we will endeavor to keep all residents posted.
As a reminder, if you wish to place funeral flowers in the war memorial gardens,
please contact Bill Frost on 01634 861228 or pop into the garage. Flowers should
only be left in the war memorial gardens for 7 days and then removed. Any
flowers left after the 7 day period will be removed by representatives of the Parish
Council
“Three Villages School Art Competition” – Judging by a six strong independent
panel will take place on 22 April, followed by a prize giving party to announce
the winners on 29 April. Children and teachers from all three schools will be
attending. If you would like to see the competition entries, members of the public
are invited to come along after the prize giving party from 3.15 pm to 6.00 pm on
Wednesday 29 April at Burham Old School Community Centre.

Help to keep Wouldham looking clean and tidy - Now spring is finally upon
us and the weather is improving, Wouldham Parish Council would like to
encourage residents to help keep Wouldham Village looking clean and tidy.
Please always use the litter bins and dog bins in the village. We have received
reports that dog poo not being picked up is on the increase again so please think
of your fellow residents and especially children who don't always watch where
they are walking. It is an offence not to pick up the dog poo so please help to
keep Wouldham a pleasant place to enjoy walking in. It is also a good time get
rid of any weeds at the front of your property too. This does help to keep the
overall appearance of the village looking smart.
Flytipping - if you do come across any flytipping in the parish it is always
helpful if you can take a photo and forward this onto either the Clerk or
Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council to help identify who is responsible for
clearing away the flytipping.
Community Payback Work - Wouldham Parish Council is still using the
payback team to do work around the village. Currently they are clearing some
stumps from the footpath MR1 by river, starting from the church. They don't
always arrive in the village with any tools for the work we want them to do. The
Parish Council is therefore asking residents if they have any old gardening tools
they could donate to the Parish Council for this work. Please contact Cllr Jenny

gratefully received!
New Village Sign - Now we have our updated parish logo, the Parish Council
are looking into renewing the village sign on the green opposite the village
stores. We are also going to look into the possibility of solar lighting for the new
sign.
Spring High Tides - we know many residents were concerned about the level of
the river last month with the spring high tides, especially at the riverside open
space off Trafalgar Close. This is being regularly monitored by Tonbridge &
Malling Borough Council. Our Borough Councillors are going to request that an

Parking Issues - Wouldham Parish Council appreciates that parking in the
village is increasingly becoming a hot topic of debate. Can we politely ask for
all drivers to be considerate to others when parking in the village: please ensure
you park considerately at junctions so you do not cause an obstruction, do not
park over driveways and do not park with your vehicle's wheels on the pavement
or a grassed verged area. Please also be mindful when parking in Wouldham
High Street. This a bus route and the bus does need to access here throughout the

NEWS FROM TRENPORT
Traffic Management and Road Closures - Peters Village off Site Roads As part of the ongoing works to Peters Village off site roads, the following
traffic management and road closures are necessary. These will take effect from
16 March 2015. Our contractor Bam Nuttall is responsible for these works and
will take every care to keep disruption to a minimum.

Location - Court Road, Burham: various locations along Court Road.
Works: The main works are between Bell Lane and Margetts Lane and there
will be works to close the junction at Rochester Road. The main works include
the refurbishment of the existing carriageway including widening, new kerb
lines, white lining etc. Closure of the junction at Rochester Road includes the
extension of the footpath across the junction, new kerb lines and top-soiling.
The new Court Road alignment will be opened up to facilitate the junction
works, with traffic travelling through the spur road.
Dates: Closure of junction between Rochester Road and Court Road: 24 March
2015.
Complete closure during weekend of 21 March through to 13 April to facilitate
resurfacing of existing road; access will still be permitted through the works but
a diversion route will be installed to assist the works where required. Speed limit
change to 30mph from 16 March 2015.
Rochester Road, Burham
Location - Along Rochester Road from Court Road junction to Bull Lane
Works: these continue and involve the creation of the new footpath along
Rochester Road to link the new Court Road with Bull Lane. These include
closure of the junction between Rochester Road and the 'old' Court Road,
creation of the new footpath from the crossing at the 'new' Court Road, around
Alex Hill to Bull Lane and the creation of two new islands within the existing
road - one north of the new Court Road and one south.
Dates: completion anticipated 27 March 2015
Pilgrims Way, Aylesford
Location: Along Pilgrims Way from Hale House to the junction with Rochester
Road at Aylesford
Works: refurbishment of existing carriageway including new kerb lines, refur-
bishment of steps between both elevated lanes, white lining and anti-skid works.
Dates: starting on 7 April 2015 with completion anticipated for 17 May 2015.
All night works between 7.00 p.m. and 6.00 a.m. to avoid disruption to bus
routes and HGVs.

APRIL IN YOUR GARDEN ‘April showers bring May flowers.’
Now that April is upon us, the days are now longer and the
soil is starting to warm up. Spring bulbs have put on their
show, and spring bedding continues the display through into early summer.
If your garden is in need of some colour then primroses and violas can be
planted into borders, and pots of tulips dotted into spaces amongst the
borders to brighten areas yet to fill out with your summer plants. Perennial
plants will also now be springing into life with new buds forming, and with
the sap now rising in the trees they will be putting on growth ready for the
season ahead. Now is the ideal time to finish clearing away those dead
materials from last season to allow light and warmth to get to the soil ready
for planting up later in the year, or to allow those plants that have died
back over the winter to emerge with their fresh growth.
With Easter weekend falling early in April, the garden centres will be busy
with their spring bedding plants on display, but now is also a good time to
think about any gaps that need filling with perennial plants too as the soil
will be moist but warmer allowing plants the maximum growing season to
establish prior to next winter. Other things to be doing this month
Warm weather will have promoted lawn growth, so a gentle cut on a
high setting will ease the lawn into summer but protect it from any
cooler nights
Finish pruning established trees to ensure they keep their shape for
the season ahead
Trim dead flower stalks from lavender, but take care not to cut into
old wood
Prune rose bushes to maintain an open shape, trim out any crossing
or dead/damaged branches and reduce height by 1/3rd
Plant summer bulbs such as lily and gladioli in pots for summer
displays
Continue to lift & divide perennial plants and replant in spare spaces,
or pot up & give away
Take softwood cuttings of perennial plants by cutting just below a
leaf node. Remove lower leaves & pot into sandy well drained soil
in pots of trays, water in & place in a warm light position until
rooted.
Prune forsythia once it has finished flowering

WOULDHAM Church of England PRIMARY SCHOOL
April is here and we move in to the closing stages of the school year as
we have Easter holidays and then return for the final two terms and
hopefully warm and bright weather! Easter is fairly early which means we
break up on the 1st April having a bonus two days plus two full weeks to
enjoy fresh air and fun! We return to school on the Tuesday following a
staff development day on Monday 20th.
Last month was as busy as usual and had many highlights including trips
to Tyland Barn, Rochester Cathedral, Shorne Woods, the new Strood
Library, Brighton and Hove Albion FC, Fowlmead Country Park for a
cycling adventure and a golfing experience for our ‘Playtime
Superheroes’. We’ve also welcomed creepy crawlies into school, had
storytellers work with KS2 classes and taken part in a variety of different
competitive activities within school.
Thinking of competition, we have also been very busy completing our
whole school artwork for the ‘Love our Valley’ competition being run by
Trenport Investments. This has really taken shape and we’re really
pleased with it, and regardless of the competition outcome, will have
some significant work to help mark our 150th anniversary in June.
Watch out for the end result as it should be highly visible in early April!

Also in March we had our church school inspection. At the time of
writing this was due to be conducted and so the outcome cannot be known
but we will let you know how we get on in the next news release! This is
a good ‘check up’ on where we are and how we can be even better in
serving our community with a particular focus on our Christian
distinctiveness, approach to collective worship, quality of Religious
Education as well as the leadership and management of the school. We
anticipate a good outcome and look forward to receiving our report.
You can be involved with a few events at school too – why not come
along to the ‘Friends Easter event’ from 2:30pm on Tuesday 31st March.
This is a chance for some cake and a drink!
We have our annual marathon to see which of our four house teams is
feeling fittest on Friday 24th April (starting at 9:15am).

BURHAM Church of England PRIMARY SCHOOL
Finally the sun has come out and we are able to use our great
outdoor resource: the field. The children love having so much
space and enjoy playing with each other no matter which year
group they are in.
We started off the term with ‘Wicked Word Week’ which
launched the use of the new dictionaries we have invested in,
as part of our OFSTED action plan to improve our spelling.
The children loved using the dictionaries which included a selection of rhyming
and maths editions as well. Families were invited in at the end of the week to
hear what the children had been up to and to celebrate their achievements.
The children spoke to me about what they considered to be ‘learning behaviours’
and they are clearly able to articulate what it takes to be a good learner. Also
they incorporated our school’s Christian values into their learning habits.
Reverend Steve and Mrs Nolan came in to an Act of Worship to receive a
cheque for the Heart of Kent Hospice who compassionately looked after Mrs
Nolan’s sister in the last days of her life. Thank you to all the parents who gave
so generously to raise £150 (the most we have raised in recent years).
We welcomed 13 students form Christ Church College Canterbury into the
school who worked in various classes. The students had a great day and were all
keen to say how lovely the children had been and what a welcoming and friendly
school we are. I received an email from one of the students to thank us and say-
ing: “I was very impressed with the school especially the children’s behaviour.”
Our School Governors hosted an afternoon tea for parents so that they could find
out what it means to be a parent governor. If you missed this you can still
enquire at the school office.
The PTA came in to school to run ‘Mother’s Day Secret Rooms’ which enabled
the children to buy inexpensive treats for mums. Also mums, aunts and grand-
mothers were invited in to share lunch with the children to celebrate Mother’s
Day. Year 6 led a Mother’s Day Act of Worship as well.
Family Trust came in to lead Easter workshops for Year 4 and 5; every year
group led an Easter Worship exploring deeper messages around the story.
Reverend Mike led us in a Lenten Eucharist at the school.
During the last week Year 13 students from Maidstone Grammar School for
Girls came to the school to run a ‘Thinking Skills’ day for Key Stage 2 and the
children took part in 4 different workshops designed to get the children to think
at a higher, deeper level.
Finally the term ended with our traditional church service, the children receiving
palms; coming back to school to eat hot cross buns and then in the afternoon
take part in an Easter egg hunt put on by our PTFA!
