Tyndall Park Before & After

Tyndall Park Community School is pleased

to provide the YMCA/YWCA Before &

After School Care for the families in need

of daycare. Students must be accompanied

by their parents/guardians to door 28 (Pit).

The YMCA/YWCA will operate under their

guidelines and provincial regulations. All

the information is available online. For information please contact Jennifer at

431-999-1600. Pre-registration will be

of the utmost importance as the school

will not be responsible for child care

outside of the school hours.

Your child’s care is important to us and we

are pleased to say the experts in the field of

child care will be governed by an

organization that can continue to offer this. The school will not be responsible for

the daycare needed for your child and

will not drop off students at the

YMCA/YWCA unless they are registered.

Entry and Exit Doors

Students are asked to line up outside the

doors before school and exit through the

same doors. Parents are asked to drop off

students and pick students up at these

doors. Students should not be coming in

through the front doors before the bell

rings.

Nursery and Kindergarten students line up at the doors by the front courtyard.

Grades 1-2 line up at the doors by the back courtyard.

Grades 3-4 line up at the doors by the front courtyard.

Grades 5-6 will line up at the portable doors.

STUDENTS ARE NOT TO BE DROPPED

OFF OR PICKED UP IN THE BUS LOOP

OR PARKING LOT. It is not safe for

students as drivers may not be able to

see them.

Staff are on duty at 8:45 am.

MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT

Please join us for ‘Meet The Teacher’ Night at Tyndall Park Community School on

September 11th, 2014 at 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm. Teachers will be introducing parents to the

curriculum for their classroom and will be available for any questions or concerns parents may

have. We are very proud of our staff and school and would like to share with parents the reasons

why, so please plan on attending Thursday evening.

We have worked hard to keep our classroom populations at a reasonable number in order to let

teachers distinguish and help those children who need the extra attention. If there are concerns

with your child’s learning, please contact the school or speak with your child’s teacher.

At Tyndall Park School, we are extremely fortunate to have Mrs. Malou Josue, Filipino

Liason for the North District School Division. She is a wonderful resource for new families to the

school and area. We also offer after-school Filipino classes for those students who are interested

in learning more about the Filipino culture and traditions.

We have a wonderful intramural program for students in grades 4-6, Drama Clubs, Dance Clubs

and many other extra-curricular that are sure to keep students active and involved.

MONTHLY ATTENDANCE

Daily attendance is important for all students. Students who attend school regularly are more

engaged in learning, have a greater sense of belonging in their communities and are more

likely to graduate.

ARRIVING LATE

Students who arrive after the bell are asked to check in at the office.

EARLY PICK UP

If you are picking up your child before dismissal, please report to the office where your child will meet you and you can sign them out. Arriving at the classroom door may cause a disruption to the class. We want to ensure that the child is with the specified adult.

UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION

Please keep the school up-to-date by informing us of any changes in business, home sitter or emergency phone numbers and/or addresses.

RECESS

All children in grades 1 to 6 are expected to go outside for a 15 minute recess morning and afternoon. Students who are well enough to have come to school, are usually well enough to have outdoor recess.

Recess is indoors if it is raining or too cold. Guidelines for indoor recess are available on line.

STUDENT ACCIDENT INFORMATION

Information is being sent home on student accident

insurance. The insurance covers potentially

expensive situations at a very reasonable cost. The

plan covers students 24 hours per day, 365 days per

year and includes accidents whether at school or

outside school hours. Premiums and applications

are sent directly to the company. The WSD also

carries an Universal Student Accident Insurance

Program which provides coverage for all full-time

students registered in the WSD1 while in or on

school buildings or premises by reason of attending

classes on any regular school day.

ELEMENTARY ASSESSMENT PROGRAM

(EAP)

This fall, our teachers will once again be assessing

each student in nursery to grade six, using the

division’s Comprehensive Assessment Program. The

focus is on English Language Arts and Mathematics

and the assessment will give teachers information to

help them plan to meet students’ needs. Please talk

with your child’s teacher if you have any questions

regarding this program.

STUDENTS ARRIVING EARLY

Students are not permitted to wander the hallways if

they arrive early. Students are to remain outside and

enter only after the bell rings. Please remind your

children to obey and respect the patrols who

volunteer their time to make sure everyone crosses

safely. Parents who walk their children to school

need to be good role modes by crossing at the

corners and obeying the patrols and crossing guard.

Upon arrival to school, children are asked to wait

outside until the bell rings. If there is a GREEN

CARD on the doors children may enter and wait

quietly inside if it is raining or too cold.

PATROLS

School safety patrols are on duty each day at 8:45

a.m., noon, 12:45 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. Please send

your child when patrols are on post. Make sure your

child comes home immediately after dismissal so

they can cross with the patrols. For your child’s

safety, remind them to obey the patrols at all times.

If you have any questions or concerns in regards to

patrols, please contact the Patrol Supervisors, Mr. L.

Chaszewski or Ms. Diane Ponte at the school.

TPCC Parking Lot

The Tyndall Park Community Centre has been gener-

ous in previous years by allowing our employees and

parents access to the parking lot, although the cost

to maintain the parking lot has risen and forced the

Community Centre to close the lot. Please set a

healthy example by walking your child to and from

school. If you need to drive your child, please park

on the streets and ensure your child crosses with

patrols. Parking in the staff parking lot is not al-

lowed as those are paid for by employees. We thank

you for your cooperation.

Tyndall Park Patrols

Welcome back for another great school year at Tyn-

dall Park Community School. As patrol supervisors,

it is our pleasure to tell you a little about our Tyndall

Park Patrols.

To start the 2014/2015 school year, we have about

45 students on our patrol team. The patrols are

made up of grade 5 & 6 students. There will be a re-

fresher training session in September. There will also

be an opportunity for students in grade 5 & 6, who

wish to join patrols for this year.

To best protect the children of our great community,

please teach your children to cross the street where

and when patrols are working. Encourage your chil-

dren to respect student patrols and adult crossing

guards. The patrols monitor and cross pedestrians at

three locations: Burrows Avenue/Albina Way, Huber

Street/Tyndall Avenue and King Edward

Street/Herman Avenue.

The patrols are divided into 4 squads, each responsi-

ble to be on post for 1 week per month. There are

three adult crossing guards that are normally on

post to ensure the patrols are being safe and respon-

sible.

Patrols meet in the morning at 8:30 and are on post

at 8:40 until 8:55am. At lunch, patrols are on post

from 12pm until 12:10 and then again at 12:40 until

12:55pm. After school, patrols are there at 3:30 until

3:40pm.

Patrols are privileged to many rewards and recogni-

tion for their continued effort and commitment. Pa-

trols are invited 3-4 times per year, to free movies at

Silver City Polo Park.

Please drive safely in our community and keep our

children safe. Keep your hands on the steering wheel

and your eyes on the road!!

In the spring of 2015, grade 4’s will be invited to

train for patrolling and to take the place of the grade

6’s leaving in the spring.

Thank you,

Patrol Supervisors,

Les Chaszewski & Mandeep Bagri

NEW LOWER SCHOOL ZONE SPEED LIMITS

As we begin a new school year this week, all parents are being reminded to slow down

when driving on streets around schools where speed limit reductions are now in effect.

The new 30km/hr speed limits in school zones include streets surrounding most of our

elementary schools as well as administration buildings. They are in effect from 7:00 am to

5:30 pm., Monday to Friday during the school year.

Signs have been posted in the areas where speed has been reduced to 30km/hr.

The safety of our students is of utmost importance and these new slower speed limits will

help protect them while at or around our schools.

The Winnipeg Police Service has advised that both traditional and photo enforcement will

be used for these new reduced speed zones. In compliance with the Reduced-Speed School

Zone Regulation found in the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act.

Additional information is available from the City of Winnipeg website at:

Winnipeg School Division FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS…

Q. How do I know if school buses have been cancelled on mornings when the wind chill is very high?

A. School bus transportation for all school divisions in the City of Winnipeg is cancelled when the wind chill reaches -45° C by 6:15 a.m.

based on the Environment Canada readings at the Winnipeg Airport. The temperature readings can be found at the Environment Canada website

(http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca). When bus transportation is cancelled in the morning, it will not resume later in the day even if weather conditions

improve.

These media outlets are contacted in the early morning to ask that they broadcast and/or post the information:

89.3 CBC FM; 990 CBC AM; CKSB 89.9 FM (French); CJOB-680 AM; Power 97-FM; 1290 CFRW; 99.9 BOBFM;

Q94-FM; 92 CITI FM; 102.3 CLEAR FM; CKMM Hot 103; QX 04 FM; CTV News; City TV; Winnipeg Free Press website

Q. How can I find out when my child’s school will have inservices?

A. Your child’s school provides this information to parents/guardians in the school newsletter. Many schools also post

this information on their websites. If you are unsure of dates, please contact your school directly. Each school in the WSD sets its own inservice days.

These are days where only the school staff attends and the students have the day off.

Q. Can my child attend the Division’s free nursery program?

A. The Nursery Program is free for children who reside with their parent(s) within the Winnipeg School Division catchment area. Children must turn four

years old by the end of December in order to be enrolled in the fall. Non-resident students are accepted into the program, but a non-resident fee

is assessed.

Q. What schools offer day care centres?

A. A list of day care centres is listed on page 56 of the document “Your Guide to WSD.” Please click on the “Your Guide to WSD” bar on the left side of

this website’s welcome page.

Q. We live within the boundaries of the Winnipeg School Division. Do my children need to go to the school

within the catchment area where we live?

A. Provided that there is space available and that there is no additional cost to the Division, your children may attend a school of choice within the

Winnipeg School Division.

Q. I do not live within the boundaries of the Winnipeg School Division. Can my child attend a school in the

Division?

A. A non-resident student may be admitted to a school of choice: provided there is space available in the class or school; the student does not require

an individual educational plan or additional support services which would incur costs to the Division; and the student is not seeking to register in a

program of studies for which the home school division is obligated to pay under the Public Schools Act (e.g., vocational programs). The priority for

accepting students is as follows:

1. Resident students from within the local catchment area;

2. Resident students aged 4 to 20 from other school catchment areas;

3. Resident students aged 21 years and over;

4. Non-resident students aged 5 to 20 years;

5. Non-resident students aged 21 years and over (fees applicable).

NOTE: Non-resident students must register before September 30.

Q. I am looking for a school for my child. How can I find information about the various programs schools

provide?

A. You can look at a list of school offerings in the “Your Guide to WSD” (link for this is on the left side of the welcome page) or check out the various

school websites. You are also very welcome to call school principals to ask for a meeting and school tour.

Q. Where can I get a copy of the Winnipeg School Division 6-day school calendar?

A. Look on the left-hand side of this website’s welcome page. The document is posted in pdf - for printing, just click on

the printer-friendly version link.

We have a number of children and staff at Tyndall Park Community School who have a severe

allergy to nut products. Even exposure to a tiny amount of a nut product could be very serious

and life threatening. We can all play a role in preventing such a dangerous and frightening

situation at school. Although our children who have severe nut allergies and their families must

take responsibility to avoid exposure to nuts and nut products, Tyndall Park staff, other children

and their families can also help to make the Tyndall Park School environment safer. Please check

the list of ingredients on items you send to school. Avoid sending peanuts or items containing

nuts with your child to school. Discourage your child from sharing lunch or snack foods at school.

Teach your children to respect this very serious situation: discourage teasing or threatening of

children with serious allergies.

This may be an inconvenience for you, but please realize how important your cooperation is. We

would take the same care should your child have such a health care need. Thank you for your

cooperation.

Allergy Alert!

Sustainable Development

Welcome back to another exciting year of education for Sustainable Development!

Last year the Tyndall Park Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) committee started many

initiatives to move our school, our community, and our children to a more environmentally friend-

ly lifestyles.

The flower boxes were painted last spring and have been a visual delight for the Tyndall Park com-

munity to enjoy. The flowers flourished over the summer.

Last year, we started collecting compostable waste at the lunch program, and the compost is look-

ing great.

The Enviro-Kids will be collecting compostable waste material at lunch program, and will put it

into our compost bins. The compost bins will be set up by or garden boxes. In the future, we hope

to use the compost in the garden boxes to help our plants grow. Materials that are compostable

include fresh fruit and vegetable. Non-compostable materials include cooked food, meat, bones,

and dairy products.

Last year, we also started collecting plastic shopping bags. Your children can bring your old plas-

tic shopping bags to school and they will be given to Take Pride Winnipeg to be broken down and

made into other things for Winnipeg (birdhouses, benches). By bringing in these old plastic shop-

ping bags, we are keeping them from going into the landfill (where they take a very long time to

break down), and we keep them from blowing around our community and ending up in our yards,

trees, and parks. So please send any plastic shopping bags you do not need (ripped and torn bags

are also welcome) with your child to school. There will be collection bins set up around the school

for students to deposit the bags into.

Thank you,

Tyndall Park Education for Sustainable

Development Committee
