IDENTITIES CAN BE STOLEN FROM JUST A BOARDING PASSby SPENCER WILLIAMS

The barcode is used by the air-lines when you check in and board your flight to quickly and securely pass your information to the central computer database how-ever these barcode are not rendered void once used and still contain all of your data.

Experts have warned that posting pictures of your boarding passes on social media can be used by thieves to discover your private details. This current trend of taking a ‘selfie’ with your pass-port and boarding pass could cause you a lot of trouble as not only does it let potential burglars know when you’re away, but the bar-codes contain vital details which can include your address, allowing them to specifically target your home and belongings.

It doesn’t matter whether your boarding pass is printed at home or is given to you by the airline; the

barcode is prominently displayed and usually stores your name, arriv-al and departure details, the airline you’re flying with and the flight num-

ber. Some airlines even record your address, passport number and date of birth, which makes these, details a target for identity thefts. QR codes (the black dotted square) is becom-ing more popular by airlines and can be scanned by mobiles which can create more of a threat by tech ena-

bled fraudsters. The guardian reported in 2006

that a man was able to scan the bar-code on a boarding pass he found

in the bin on an airport computer, giving him the private details of a travel-ler including his passport number and date of birth. Following a search online he was able to find the per-sons address, profession and even school qualifi-cations. With these de-tails he would have been able to steal the travellers identity with ease and could have stolen money, committed fraud and even clone ID.

Brian Krebs who blogs on the subject of Internet security has urged holidaymakers to ensure they properly destroy their boarding passes once their holiday is over. Any remaining barcodes and QR codes should be properly shredded or cut up so that the data is unread-able.

DENIA IS VISITED BY DOCKING DESIGNER

by CRIS WESTDenia and its impressive port

are often visited by stars from all over the world, however last week a new celebrity frequented the seaside town.

74-year-old designer, Roberto Cavalli showed up in his mega-yacht named ‘Freedom’ which caused quite a stir amongst locals and tourists. Fa-mous for his line of clothes as well as eyewear, home range, and even his own line of Vodka, Cavalli is said to be passionate about the sea, so usu-

ally frequents Sardinia, Montenegro, and the Greek islands, however he obviously fancied a change and de-cided to moor in Denia.

Roberto was recently awarded an Honory Master Diploma in Fashion Management from Domus Academy in Milan and has 5 children from two different marriages. Cavalli got off the boat to dine at 3 Michelin star restaurant Quique Dacosta, whose food has been reviewed as ‘some of the best tasting in the whole of

Spain’. The boat ‘Freedom’ which has already left the area was once described by Cavalli as ‘fast, nimble, compact, ideal for moving across the length and breadth of the Mediterra-nean Sea… perfect for a weekend of complete relaxation.”

Cavalli’s Spring Summer line of clothes is in stores now. You can keep up with designer and all around businessman on his blog

4 October 15th - October 21st, 2015 • theweeklybuzz.es Information

Dear ReadersMore rain across the region has caused flooding in local towns and lots of problems for many shops and businesses. Tourists and locals are also being affected as cars were abandoned during a massive downpour in Calpe on Tuesday afternoon. We really do experience some heavy rainstorms and flash flooding on the Costa Blanca, probably caused by the many mountains and as we are living on the coast. However, it’s a complete turn around from the bank holiday Monday were we had temperatures in the high 20’s and most of the beaches were full of sun seekers having a taste of the final sum-mer days.

My weekend also had a taste of the summer with a friends Spanish-style BBQ’s which included lots of big cuts of meat being smoked and cooked slowly. The sun was shining and thanks to the perfect weather on the bank holiday, it was great to get together to enjoy some tasty food and lots to drink; how better to spend your day off?

With the weeks passing by so fast, it will soon be the November fiestas in Benidorm. This is one of the most visited events in the region; if you have not had the op-portunity to take part then I highly recommend that you do, especially the British fancy dress day that takes over the streets. In the meantime we still have loads of great sport to enjoy with the rugby World Cup hotting up. As England is out it’s all down to Wales to make it to the finals now! I think the Australians are favourites along with New Zealand so we really need to show the World that the best rugby teams come from the United Kingdom. Don’t forget it is the time of year again for the Poppy Appeal so get your Poppies from local bars and shops or you can visit us at The Weekly Buzz in the in-door market in Benidorm or at the Heat FM radio studio in Calpe.

The Weekly Buzz is open to the public in the indoor market in Benidorm at our news desk, you can come by and talk to us anytime. We have a display of business partners offering you the best products for your life here in Spain, including property rentals, insurance, money exchange and much more. Also, don’t forget that if you have any events or news you can come and tell us. If you’re a business owner you can find out exactly how we can help you to get your business ‘buzzing’ together with Heat FM and The Weekly Buzz newspaper. For those people in the north areas, you can find us at our very new Calpe offices situated in the town centre, near to Specsavers and the dry riverbed.

Happy reading and have a fantastic week.Marco - Editor - Buzz Media

Denia Marriott goes on auction for €3.7 million

by CRIS WESTThe only 5–star hotel

on the Marina Alta has just announced that it will be put up for auction on the 29th October for €3.7 million after being seized from it’s owners. However, just in case you thought this was too good a deal to be true, whoever bids highest for the hotel will also have to take on the 19 million euros debt that the property currently has with an unspecified lender, and the €157,000 debt the hotel has with the city of Denia.

Although named the Denia Marriott La Sella, the hotel is actually situated in the smaller town of Jesus Pobre. La Agencia Tributaria (The Tax Agency) has embar-goed the resort due to the amount of debts accrued over the last few years. As part of the American chain Marriott, this is one of the only 6 currently in Spain and has had financial trouble since it opened in 2003. Due to the auction, the current employees of the staff find their jobs up in the air according to the CCOO (Workers Union), which described the situation as ‘dire’ after causing so much job insecurity.

The hotel is up for €3,665,000 even though the contents themselves are

currently valued at €22 million and includes the main building complex and a second property on site with a total floor area of 18,724 square meters but does not include the car park and swimming pool. The property is said to be up for auction on the 29th October but Spanish tradition dictates this will usually be delayed. The hotel is currently owned by the group ‘Promociones Denia’ who are a real es-tate agency who own and develop prop-erties in the Costa Blanca who currently state that they have ‘special focus on the prestigious La Sella Golf Resort’. They have as yet, not issued a statement.

They are looking for dogs of all shapes and sizes to enter and you and your pooch could soon be walking away with a handful of prizes.

To enter your dog into the show simply email [email protected] for an entry form and further information. Entry fee is just 2.00 euro per category, ALL proceeds going to a local dog’s charity called Alber-

gue Muncipal which is hoping to increase the range of services it’s vets currently can offer. They promise to never put a healthy dog or cat down and are always looking for more volunteers for walking and clean-ing services.

The Dog Show! categories as spon-sored by Continental Wealth Management are: Best Rescue, Puppy Class, Sprightly Pensioners, Most Handsome Dog, Pret-tiest Bitch and Children Handling. The event will also have two fun challenges for your clever doggies as sponsored by Protectapet which includes a ‘Teddy Bear Retrieve Challenge’ and a ‘Musical Mats Challenge’ to put you and your four legged friends to the test.

Spanish rail operator Renfe is plan-ning to offer passengers free wireless internet access aboard its high-speed AVE trains from the end of this year.

Former state telecommunications com-pany Telefónica beat out rival Vodafone to win the €148.6-million contract to provide the service aboard the trains.

Under the terms of the 10-year deal, Wi-

Fi will also be available at all main train sta-tions on Renfe’s commuter lines, said industry sources.

Telefónica hopes to start offering onboard Wi-Fi access on its busier lines, such as the Ma-drid-Barcelona route, by the end of December. The service will gradually extend to all 89 AVE trains over the next two years.

The Guitar Whisperer Heads to Spain

by Cris WestRichard Durrant (AKA

the Guitar Whisperer) is like no guitarist you’ve ever heard before. Shy-ing away from the usual music you’d associate with a guitar, Durrant is known as a ‘stand-up, barefoot, un-classical’ performer who can play across all musical boundaries. He’s played everywhere from the wilds of South Ameri-ca to the Royal Albert Hall and every village hall in be-tween!

A big fan of his bike, Brighton born Durrant is well known for his cycling music concerts in and around the UK. However in recent years he’s remained outside (by choice) of the classical music world, which he calls ‘the C word’, to concentrate on his many other styles.

It is very rare to find an artist of this calibre leaving their comfort zone so try and grab one of his limit-ed Spanish appearances if you can, you will not be dis-appointed. In support of the fantastic charities: Grant a Wish, The Anglican Chap-laincy and Guitarras del

Corazon, Durrant will be appearing at three differ-ent locations on the Costa Blanca, each for just €15. On Thursday 22nd Octo-ber he’ll be at the Casa de Cultura in El Verger, the day after at Hermita de St. Josep in La Fustera and on Sunday 25th he’ll be at

Javea’s Parador Hotel. You won’t want to miss him; he’s so popular in Brighton, he was recently given his own interactive paving slap in their Walk of Fame!

HOTEL PROFITS ON THE RISE

New data from the ‘Alliance for Tourism Excellence’ (AKA Ex-celtur) has reported that hotels across Benidorm have seen their profita-bility rise on an average of 11.5% due to a high-er occupancy than last year and an increase in tariffs. Most hotels have reported more bookings throughout the year and whilst charging a higher rate per room, many have seen greatly improved profits.

Exceltur has put this down to an improved mar-ket following the recent credit crunch as well as the diversification of many Benidorm events like the recent Gay Pride and the

success of ITV’s ‘Benidorm’ series filmed on location in the area.

This increase is re-corded from the National Statistics Institute which saw profitability higher than the same period last year, which itself has increased showing a big turn around for tourism in Benidorm. Recent years show a large decline with 2012/2013 be-ing the worst following the fiscal crisis meaning many people couldn’t afford to take holidays abroad, as there was less disposable income. The average room price in Benidorm hotels has now risen by 9.1% to €52 per person per night which is inline with the na-tional figure.

HOLIDAY APARTMENT ROBBERIESGuests at the Primavera Loix

apartments got a shock on Mon-day 12th October after returning from a morning out for breakfast when their rooms were broken into.

The incident happened to all the rooms on floor 14 of the hotel and some of the doors were severely damaged giving the impression the perpetrators were acting as fast as possible. In hotel robberies in this area, usually there is an element of stealth, however it’s apparent that this was not the case in this instance as most were broken into with a crowbar or similar object. The rooms were completely ransacked with

many people losing money, personal items and passports. The room safes also had attempted to be accessed but reports state that although dam-aged, these remained intact.

Laura Martin who was staying in one of the rooms on floor 14 said “Luckily they didn’t manage to get anything as we had everything val-uable in the safe. They’d tried to ac-cess those though as there are dents and marks on it which weren’t there before. Next door’s room was bro-ken into as well and they’ve had their passports taken.”

They brought the incident to the management’s attention but they said they felt like they did not care

too much about the incident. The police are now involved and investi-gations are underway. If you have any informat ion r e g a r d i n g anything sus-picious call 112 or visit the SATE office next to the infor-mation centre at the end of the Le-vante beach at the Old Town end of Benidorm.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TERRA NATURA’S

FAVOURITE TRIPLETS!by CRIS WEST

Last week, three very lucky Capybaras celebrated their joint birthday at the Terra Natura nature and an-imal park situated in Benidorm. Odita, Ol-ivian and Obelixia cel-ebrated their first birth-day and were treated to an extra special fruit and vegetable salad created by their loving caregivers.

The male (Olivi-an) and the two fe-males were born in captivity at a zoo in Munich and were initially kept under quarantine before quickly being allowed in their en-vironment, which they share with Capuchin mon-keys as they live in close proximity in the wild. According to their keepers the triplets spent the day doing everything they loved which includes swimming and diving, and considering they can stay under water for five minutes at a time, they might just be training for the next Olympics! Known for

their dog like barks, the Capyba-ras diet consists of grasses, fruit

and the outside of trees, as they are completely herbivorous. The three were brought to the zoo

in June and settled in quickly amongst Ter-ra Natura’s large variety of animals from all over the world. The Capybara is the largest rodent in the world and they live together in herds. They usually prefer hot, wet climates making Spain the perfect lo-cation for them. Happy birthday siblings from everyone at The Weekly Buzz.

to watch the parade along the beach-front after being welcomed by the Mayor together with the British Consul Paul Rodwell.

This is the second official Poppy Ap-peal to be held in Benidorm.

The Royal British Legion in Spain District Chairman said, “I am amazed and truly overwhelmed at the response to the launch of the Poppy Appeal for 2015 here in Benidorm”. 2014’s total was an in-credible record breaking raising over 175 thousand euros. Volunteers have given

up their time to go out to many locations that include airports, shop-ping malls, bars and more in order that The Royal British Legion in Spain can contribute to the very well deserved ex-service men and women. TASTY TAPAS ROUTES ARE RETURNING TO CALPE

Following the im-mense success of similar projects during the Spring, Calpe City council has announced that the ‘Ruta del Tardeo’ will return in November. If you’re a fan of great tasting, traditional Spanish tapas then you’re in luck, this is the easiest way to try the very best the restaurants have to offer by creating a small range of their finest food,

all in handy bite sized mouthfuls!

Following an over-whelmingly positive consensus from Calpe restaurateurs, the council have already started to create the route which not only takes you through the town, but past the best and most popular restau-rants the coastal town has to offer. This does involve closing certain roads near

to the eateries but the council is working with the Departments of Tourism and the local Police to ensure that everything is carried out by the letter and that all necessary roadblocks are fully legal.

This event was such a success earlier in the year that the council report-ed increased bookings at local hotels as well as a boost for the gastronomy in-

dustry as it opened up the smaller places to a much bigger audience of both Calpe residence and tour-ists. The ‘Ruta del Tardeo’ is expected to start early in November but an exact date hasn’t yet been set.

On 17th October Mary Wood will be 80 years young. Nine years ago Mary was one of the first ever members of our U3A with membership number 11 when she joined with her husband Eddie, to whom she has been married for 57 years. Prior to this she was a member of Calpe U3A and has seen our U3A grow and develop. She has remained a stalwart of our organisation ever

since and can always be found as part of the ‘Meet and Greet’ team at our General Meetings. She is also Group Leader for the Sugar Craft Group, using the cake making skills she gained as a Domestic Science Teacher in her home town of Tamworth. Mary still puts these skills to great use and, as a member of Jalon Valley Help, usually makes the cakes for the ‘Guess the Weight of the Cake’ com-

petition. She is an avid baker and her cakes are really delicious.

When Mary gave up teaching in 1979, she and her family moved to Cornwall where they owned and ran a hotel. In 2002 Mary and Eddie decided to move to Spain and purchased the house where they live in Alcalali. Her daughter Jackie also lives in Spain and owns the very popular Citrus Bar in Orba, where Mary can

often be found helping out. Her son Mark is in the UK but also has plans to move to Spain in the near future.

On Mary’s birthday Jackie is organising a special birthday celebra-tion at the Citrus Bar for family and friends and Mary’s granddaughter is baking her birthday cake. Your friends at the U3A Vall del Pop wish you a Very Happy 80th Birthday Mary, have a wonderful celebration.

SUMMER SUCESS FOR RED CROSSby CRIS WEST

The Red Cross and Javea’s Depart-ment of Beaches had a successful sum-mer reporting that 4,743 health instances have been treated at the beach health posts.

The surveillance and lifeguard posts on

beaches in Javea provided by the Red Cross have reported on the number of incidents over the 2015 summer season and are happy to confirm that there were zero fatalities along this part coast.

A good result considering the larger

recorded numbers of swimmers on the beaches and the new challenges associ-ated with ‘increased tourism’ in the area.

From the general data, 4,743 health assistances were required for treatment at the beach health posts, of which the vast majority were small incidents or aid for jellyfish stings.

Although the beaches of Javea have not had a massive presence of jellyfish this year, these stinging’s were all within

the normal parameters. The number of health transfers to

the health centre or local hospital via ambulances reached a total of 76, which includes incidents on the promenade or the leisure area of the beach as well as the sea.

The team have also done a great job on the social care for special needs with a bathroom stall that 403 people regis-tered to use.

MORAIRA’S GOURMET RACE IS WON BY AMATEUR CHEF

Last weekend saw bank holi-days on the Friday and the Monday to create what is known as the Puente or ‘Bridge’ for the Valencian region. Many costal towns took the opportunity to showcase the best they had to offer with boat races, seafood and a whole host of other fun activ-ities. However, always one to push the boat out, Moraira has combined the two popular events to form the Gourmet Race in which your must sail (powered by engine or wind) around a course, whilst cooking a seafood dish.

The fourth annual event has gained success and saw more en-trants than ever this year competing to win by grabbing their crew and setting sail. Each year the dish is themed so that there is a focal point of the food. Last year’s Lobster theme was extremely popular so when the 2015 race announced that the theme would

be ‘Red fish’ many people thought this was too low profile. However the dish-es that were created were said to have blown the judges away, non-more so than the winner: Amateur chef José María Serna on the boat Reima.

The judges were stunned by the simplicity of the cooking and head judge Michelin-star chef Manuel Alon-so who runs Casa Manolo Daimús said he ‘had absolutely no doubt whom the winner should be’. Although not a profession-al chef, winner José said that they actually came to the final dish by accident. They had original decided to make a fish cruet (a stew) however due to the bad conditions on the boat taking part in the race, they settled on a sushi style entry which had a salt crust applied for 20 minutes before being

marinated in olive oil for more than an hour. The boat was said to have a tiny kitchen compared to many of the other entrants of the race. The red fish was chosen as ‘it has an impressive texture but lacks flavour, they must season it well to show great culinary skill” said Juan Moll, one of the organ-isers.

BMW has unveiled the high perfor-mance M2 which effectively replaces the 1 Series M Coupe in its line-up. Powered by a 3.0-litre engine with 370PS, it will go on sale in spring 2016 priced at £44,070.

The straight-six engine has been specifically developed for the M2 and when fitted with the seven-speed M DCT gearbox, delivers a 0-62mph time of 4.3 seconds (4.5 seconds for the manual) and a limited top speed of 155mph. It will rev to 7000rpm with maximum torque of 500Nm thanks to an overboost system.

Taking the standard 2 Series, BMW has reduced wind drag with the use of air intakes in the front bumper. It also gets wider wheelarches to accommo-

date the wider track and wheels. At the back there’s a subtle M spoiler on the boot and an integrated diffuser with dual twin exhausts.

The stiffer body sits on 19-inch al-loys with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres developed specifically for the M2. As you’d expect given the high perfor-mance nature, it has uprated brakes with blue metallic painted callipers. There is also an Active M Differential designed to maximise traction.

A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard while there’s an M DCT as an option. The latter includes the delightfully named ‘Smokey Burnout’ function, which lets you indulge in a bit of wheelspin at low speed. Claimed fuel economy is 33.2mpg for the manual

and 35.8mpg for the M DCT.

The in-terior of the M2 has black Dakota leath-er seats with a contrasting blue stitch plus adjusta-ble side bol-sters for both front seats.

Food & DrinkFood & Drink

It’s no secret where to get great food. In fact all the British visitors and locals know where they can enjoy a regular feast of traditional British food: Rays II Chippy! June & Steve from Leeds have been serving the best fish and chips in Benidorm for over 30 years and they contin-ue to put a big smile on the faces of their customers by serving top quality food.

So what makes Rays II stand out from the rest? The Weekly Buzz sent our food correspondent to find out and

understand what makes the real quality at Rays II extra special. Co-owner June explained, “the prime Icelandic Cod is skinless and boneless and the best chunky fish fillets are cooked fresh to order”. She added “we also only use high-grade sunflower seed oil in the cooking of our fish so they are virtually cholesterol free”. But what about the chips? “You can find all sorts of chips out there, there

are literally hundreds of types, but we only use fresh potato chips not from frozen and they are cooked to perfection. Our chips are not just any chips!”

The menu includes a very special offer of White Fillet Fish, Chips and Mushy Peas for only 3.95€. Other special menus are priced at just 5.65€ and include a choice of desserts. If you don’t want to eat Fish and Chips then this special price includes a choice of home-made chicken curry with rice or southern fried chicken breast and chips. There are so many amazing choices and something for everyone.

What you will notice most of all though is the quality of the batter: it was golden and crispy and when cutting through to the chunky white fillet you can see how soft and tender the fish was. The taste is amazing and together with the mushy peas and chunky chips you’ll enjoy every mouth full. The portion size was so generous in fact you’ll be pushed to fit in a des-sert which includes a host of British favourites like homemade apple crumble, trifle, cheese-cake, treacle/jam sponge, and a chocolate fudge cake with hot chocolate sauce to die for!

June and Steve were happy to tell us the history as like most people who have been to Benidorm will have noticed, there are three

Fish and Chip Restaurants called Rays. Rays 1 is in Be-nidorm Old Town and was the first Rays Chippy in Be-nidorm but it is not the same owners as Rays II.

The original Rays team together with June and Steve made up the three restaurants until they became inde-pendent. The pair are the owners of Rays II and you can easily find them just behind Euro Tobacco shop on the main Avenida Mediterraneo in the Rincon only one street back from the beach front. We recommend you visit Rays II and don’t forget to mention you have seen them in The Weekly Buzz.

The TV appearances don’t seem to stop as he was next invited to take part in the Channel 4 series “Come Dine With Me”. Gary became the winner of the £1000 prize for the best host and meal as voted for by the other contestants. camera generations of lively minds and above all of course the wonder of nature that is Alan Davies.’

He added: ‘After passing the alpha-betical halfway mark I

thought it time to move on, but I will never cease to be grateful to John Lloyd for de-vising QI and for everyone else for making it such fun.’

Sandi Toksvig said: ‘QI is my favourite television programme both to watch and to be on, so this is absolutely my dream job. (My Nordic background also makes me keen to spend time with the Elves). Ste-phen has been utterly brilliant with the first half of the alphabet.

PISCES

SCORPIO (Oct 24th-Nov 22nd)

Cultivate the right attitude and you’ll get ahead slowly and smoothly. It’s all about being bedded in for the long term. Don’t rush your fences, but take some care and attention over all things. Be thankful luck is on your side, but it won’t be for ever.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd-Dec 21st)

Staying ahead of the game is vital if you’re to make the kind of progress you want. Make sure common sense and intuition are your best friend this week as you’ll flounder without them. The lunar high keeps you focused on the job at hand now.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22nd-Jan 20th)

You’re interacting much better with the world at large now, and that’s great, but there’s still a small part of your life that you prefers to keep to yourself. You work best when you know what you’re responsible for and what your limitations are.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21st-Feb 19th)

You have a lot of things to cover this week, and very few will turn out to be as simple or as straightforward as you’d first imagined they’d be. Open and honest conversations will take you further than you’d first thought, so all is not lost.

PISCES (Feb 20th-March 20th)

Although there are significant challenges to face this week, you’re standing up to the pressure rather well I’d say. You’re not your usual shy and retiring self, but rather a force to be reckoned with. Keep it up and success is yours for the taking.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

You’re very generous when it comes to time and money for those you love, but don’t be taken for a mug if others start to see you as their own personal ATM. You need to be cruel to be kind if you have to stop the cash flow to a child or young adult.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

There’s a mixture of confusion and incompetence washing over your week, not helped by the emotive qualities of the moon, but do your best to keep life on an even keel and you’ll emerge relatively unscathed. Expect delays over travel.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

Don’t be tempted to take on too many commitments or you’ll be overwhelmed, and as you know, that won’t help at all in the longer term view. Someone you trusted is playing up and saying things they shouldn’t be. Take the bull by the horn here.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Loved ones tend to rely heavily on your judgement, which can at times leave you with a huge responsibility, but you’re fine with that as long as they feel they’re getting everything they need. Be careful over financial decisions. Take your time.

VIRGO (August 24th-Sept 23rd)

You’re wonderful at mixing with small groups of people that you already know. The difficulty comes when new faces are brought into the circle. It’s then your shy and reserved side emerges. Try to be a bit more confident. Start with a smile.

LIBRA (Sept 24th-Oct 23rd)

You’ll attract the right sort of people to help you along this week be that where a job is concerned, or money advice is required, or even talking about your love life is needed. Nothing will unsettle you, so be upfront and honest when talking.

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

You’ll suddenly feel that everyone is rushing towards you and showering you with the support you’ve been lacking over recent week. By all means rely on others and even lean of them occasionally, but stay in control over decision making.

Health & FamilyCHICKEN POX IN PREGNANCYChicken pox (caused by the

varicella zoster virus) is extremely infectious, the air borne virus eas-ily passing from person to person. A person with chicken pox is infec-tious from 2 days before the rash appears until all the lesions have crusted over (usually 5-7 days after the appearance of the rash).

Chicken pox will affect approx-imately 3 in 1000 pregnant wom-en and may have consequences for both the mother and the fetus. The infection always tends to be more severe in adults than in chil-dren and for the pregnant woman it can be very unpleasant. The most common complication for pregnant

women who develop chick-en pox is pneumonia. This affects 10% of cases of which 1% will actually die. Another serious (but un-common) complication is encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Very rarely the virus may affect the heart muscle, the liver, the pancreas, the kidneys and the eyes.

For the unborn baby the risk of complications will vary depending on the gestation of the fetus. If the mother becomes infected during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, the baby will have a 1 in 200 chance of developing Fetal Varicel-la Syndrome (FVS) which can cause fetal abnormal-ities. Between 13 and 20 weeks the risk rises to 1 in 50. After 20 weeks the risk of FVS is very low and

not documented after 28 weeks. Between

28 and 36 weeks ges-tation the virus stays in the baby’s body (without symp-toms) but may become ac-tive in the first few years of life presenting as shingles. After 36 weeks gestation a baby may be born already infected with chicken pox.

If a pregnant woman knows she is not immune to chicken pox and is in contact with the virus she should consult her doctor as soon as possible.

There is a vaccine available that protects against Varicella which should be considered by all non-immune women be-fore they become pregnant (at least 1 month prior to conception) or in the post natal period.

Fact: many diabetics reading this will have no idea what an HbA1c is.

I shall rectify this with a brief explanation but that is not the point of this article. The point is that good diabetes management can drastically reduce complications. The main person responsible for your diabetes management is YOU but unless you understand your condition how can you be expected to control it?!

In an ideal world, every newly diagnosed diabet-ic would have a short series of appointments with their Doctor or Practice Nurse where they would be educated about their condition and given the opportunity to ask any questions.

Some patients do have access to such a service but it varies from Practice to Practice. GP’s do not normally have the time and not all Practice Nurses are trained in diabetes care. To make matters worse, when you live in a foreign country and do not speak the language you may be put on tablets and sent away with no clue as to what is happening to your body!

If not correctly managed, diabetes can lead to:

• Heartandbloodvesseldisease.• Nervedamage(neuropathy).• Kidneydamage(nephropathy).• Eyedamage.• Footdamageandamputations• Skinandmouthconditions.• Osteoporosis.• Alzheimer’sdisease.• Hearingproblems.

Thankfully, such compli-cations are largely preventa-ble with early diagnosis, regu-lar tests and the correct care.

It has long been recog-nized in the medical world that educated patients cope better with chronic diseases such as diabetes. Knowledge gives them power over their illnesses, reduces complica-tions and reduces the risk of depression that often accom-panies chronic disease.

So, for those of you that don’t know, your HbA1c is your average blood glucose over a 2-3 month period. It is expressed as a percent-age and in general, the aim of treatment is an HbA1c of between 6.5% and 7.5 % de-pending upon the patient.

This figure is very impor-tant as it is used to decide:

-if and when you need to change from diet only control to tablets.

-if your medication dose needs changing.-if you require different types of tablets to control your

blood glucose.-if you need to commence insulin.

Ifyouhavequestionsaboutanyaspectofyourdi-abetesorfeelthattherearegapsinyourunderstand-

ingof your condition, make an appointmentwith asuitablyqualifiedhealthcareprofessionalwhocangiveyouthetimethatyouneed.

Diabetic? What is your HbA1c?

As the Premier League takes a break thanks to a successful Inter-national Weekend(unless you are a Scotland Fan),we can have a look at who has impressed so far in the Alfaz Fantasy Football League.

Phil’s Team Flixton Sunshiners started the Season at the top but for only One Week then Angie’s Blues took over for the next Four Weeks before Booker Boys replaced them.Gary’s Team Blue Moon F.C.knocked the Booker Boys off the Summit and are now the present Leaders. So in Eight Weeks we have had 4 different Teams leading the Fantasy League.

Angie’s Blues have led from the front since the start of the Season in our Mark Carter Ladies Section but at the moment they are coming under pressure from Maxine’s Team Plaistow13Hammers who have shot up the League and are now only 2 points behind in 2nd place.Former Winner of the Fantasy League Jin’s Dream Team are nicely placed in 3rd spot.

There has been plenty of competition for the top spot of our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League as no fewer than 5 different Teams have held on to the Summit. The present Leaders Super Rhys who won this Section last Season have opened up a 22 point gap over Nathan’s Ty-rannosuarez -Rex.Down at the bottom of this Section Bradley’s Team Hero to Zero have been rooted there for the last 5 Weeks and don’t look like moving.

Our Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League has been mainly dominated by Dave’s Team The Podencos who ruled for Four Weeks but they have now given way to the inform Maxine’s Plaistow-13Hammers.

The highest score so far has been struck by Angie’s Blues who rat-tled in 102 points in the 2nd Week while at the opposite end of the scale the lowest score has been made by Anne’s Team Bolton Wanderers who on the 1st Week of the Season scored an unbelievable minus 10.I can’t see any of those scores being beaten.

Top Fantasy League Players so far are in Goal Joe Hart (31)Top De-fender Vincent Kompany(36)Top Midfielder Leicester City’s Mahrez(45) and the Top Player so far this Season is another Fox Leicester City Player and also a new England Recruit James Vardy who up to date has bagged 58 points to his name which is 9 more than his nearest rival Southampton’s Striker Pelle.

Top scorers in the Golden Boot League are the 2 Leicester City Team Mates Vardy & Mahrez both on 35 points.

With almost a Quarter of the Season gone the Alfaz Fantasy League is shaping up to be the most open and exciting for Years.

.Last Season’s Winners of this Competition Pam’s People were knocked out by Who Ate all Depays Tom by 13-5.The present Lead-ers of the Fantasy League Gary’s Blue Moon F.C.made it through at the expense of Rosado Rovers by 44-29. Bottom of the League Lyn’s Handbreak City were unlucky to get Knocked out by former Leaders Booker Boys by a very narrow defeat by 11-10.

The Draw for the 2nd Round will soon be up on our website which is www.alfazffl.com and don’t forget if you can’t access a computer you can always call into one of the Bars which display all the Results and League Tables on their Notice Boards.Wyndhams,The Local,Baril-loche,Union Jack and Robin’s Nest.

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

by JACKIE MUNT - Press OffierSERENA’SRAIDTHEGRILLHOUSE

The Grill House’s defence of their title got off to a terrible start against Serena’s bar on the opening day of the Benidorm Pool Leagues. With Lisa Layden back in the side for Serena’s, it was a boost for her team and it showed immediately with them romping into a 0-4 lead against the champions. With the two doubles matches being split, the score was 1-5 to Serena’s with only the remaining four singles match-es to come.

Serena’s, needing only one more point for victory sent out the big guns to try and kill off the match. Gary Maskill and Lisa Layden were out first and both lost their matches to Pablo Picasso & Jamie L Corden respec-tively which now brought the score to 3-5. Still needing only one point and the pressure mounting, out came Ser-ena’s SAS duo of Andrew Sizer & Dan-ny Farnham.

Stifle And Steal was the game plan and it worked brilliantly with these two taking a 100% success from their sin-

gles matches and earning a massive 4 points between them. This was enough to seal a great victory for Sere-na’s Bar 7-3 and set their marker down for the title.

The Tartan Bar got off to a flyer against the Yorkshire Pride B team winning in emphatic fashion 9-1 and top the league table after week 1. Oth-er notable victories saw Bobby’s Bar see off new comers London Bar B 6-4 and last year’s bottom team the Rock-star, beat the other new com-ers, The Pep-permill 7-3.

In the battle of street wars it was the York-shire Pride A team that tri-umphed over ne i ghbou r i ng team, The Stret-ford Jukebox. In a hotly contest-

ed match, it was down to a forfeit that sealed the victory for The Yorkshire Pride A after initially a great fightback by The Stretford Jukebox team with the match eventually ending 7-3.

All matches start at 9pm every Thursday, why not come along and join in the fun.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been presented with a record fourth Golden Shoe award in a ceremony on Tuesday, after scoring 48 goals in the 2014-15 season.

Ronaldo collected the award, given to Eu-rope’s highest goalscorer over a season, ahead of rival Lionel Messi, as the Barcelona forward managed a total of 43 goals, two less than his La Liga counterpart.

The former Manchester United attacker has won the award on three previous occasions, twice while at current club Real Madrid and once when leading the forward line at Old Trafford. The 30-year-old ended the last campaign without any silverware at the Santiago Bernabeu, as Messi’s Barcelona swept to an impressive treble, but the Portugal captain has again been recognised for his individual goalscoring exploits.

Ronaldo’s remarkable goalscoring record was recently commended by the Madrid club, with a ceremony dedicated to the forward overtaking club legend Raul as the all-time top goalscorer for Los Blancos and the latest Golden Shoe award only further recognises his achievements.

RONALDO WINS FOURTH GOLDEN BOOT

Former Rugby Football Union chairman Martyn Thomas says he warned Twickenham bosses that Stuart Lancaster was the wrong man to lead England into the World Cup.

Calling it a “tragedy” that Sir Clive Woodward is not pulling the strings in the international set-up, Thom-as says Lancaster’s lack of

top-level experience before rising through the England ranks meant he would be found lacking on the big-gest stage.

Lancaster’s career as England head coach is under close scrutiny and could be brought to an ear-ly end after the host team’s failure to reach the World Cup knock-out stages.

NETHERLANDS ‘CZECH’ OUT

The Netherlands failed to reach the European Champion-ship for the first time since 1984 as they lost 3-2 at home to the 10-man Czech Republic in their final qualifier on Tuesday to miss out on Euro 2016. The Dutch, third at last year’s World Cup in Brazil, saw their hopes of a dramatic rescue act in the campaign evaporate as they conceded two first-half goals.

The former European

champions had to win and hope Turkey lost at home to Iceland to sneak into third place in Group A and book a slot in next month’s playoffs.

However, the Netherlands were consigned to fourth spot behind the Turks, who won 1-0 to secure a place at the finals in France as the best third-placed team.

he loss left the Dutch with 13 points from their 10 matches

behind Turkey on 18, while the Czechs claimed top spot in the group with 22 points, two ahead of Iceland.

Pavel Kaderabek and Josef Sural stunned the hosts with goals in the first period and the game was over when substitute Robin van Persie headed into his own net in the 66th minute. The Dutch consolation goals came from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Van Persie.
