Where To Get Dear ReadersA very warm welcome to this weeks ‘Buzz’ readers. I was waitinguntil this evening which is "Deadline Tuesday" to write my little piece. The reason being was I waiting to get as much up-to-date informa-tion as possible on the results of local elections. Why you might ask?Because for me, a local business and also the local residents includ-ing the large number of British Ex-Pats, it is very important to under-stand who will be in charge of the decisions that will effect us. I havetalked to many British residents here in the local communities whodecided to vote for the first time and you know, I actually felt proudto hear that our voices are actually being heard and counted. Ourvotes do count and in the case of majority of local town halls, theBritish Ex-Pat votes could make all the difference to the results.Read the full story inside and follow the ongoing news each week tosee how things actually end up, after all, of the further negotiationsthat will unfold in the weeks to come when forming the new leader-ship. Well there are a few locals town halls that know where theystand and can carry on business as usual. They include Alfaz del Pi,La Nuica and Javier. With only one week to sort every-thing from the event venue, publicityand making sure all the popularBenidorm series actors and actress-es had picked their favorite songs tosing it was thought that it had beenleft a little to late to expect a goodturnout from the public on the night ofthe event.

For Benidorm series fans it was aunique one off opportunity to meetand rub shoulders with many of thecast members and each onereceived a Solana “all inclusive”wristband! Many of the cast mem-bers turned out and took to the stageincluding Jake Canuso, TonyMaudsley, Tim Healy, SherrieHewson, Johnny Vegas, JulieGraham, Elsie Kelly, Danny Waltersand Janine Duvitski who isAmbassador of ´Euro a Month´.

As ofMonday morning, Montserrat con-firmed that Emaus have gone intovoluntary insolvency, meaning thatthey are protected from creditors yetwill be able to continue functioning.

Emaus are owed several million bythe Valencian Government and as aconsequence, they have a debt tothe Social Security and tax depart-ments,on which 20% interest perMONTH is accrued. An administratorhas been appointed for the day today running of all the homes and anydonations received are ring fencedfor specific purposes.

The money raised on Friday will beused to pay for basic needs such asfood, medicine and fuel to take thechildren to school and every cent willbe accounted for, something whichMontserrat wanted to assure every-one that gave so generously.

BASE JUMPERS BACK IN BENIDORM

The eight B.A.S.E Jump Extreme WorldChampionships are taking place in, orrather off the Gran Hotel Bali in La Cala thisweekend – Friday 5th and Saturday 6thJune.

The Hotel Bali, located at the La Cala end ofBenidorm is 160 metres tall with spectacularviews of Benidorm - not that the jumpers willhave much time to admire them.Base Jumping is an extreme sport where partic-ipants jump from fixed objects and use a para-chute to breaktheir fall ... asopposed to abody part!

BASE is anacronym thatstands for thefour categoriesof fixed objectsfrom which onecan jump:B u i l d i n g s ,A n t e n n a s ,S p a n s(bridges) andEarth (cliffs).BASE jumpinggrew out ofskydiving butare made from much lower altitudes and the jump takesplace close to the object serving as the jump platform. The main risk is that most BASE jumping venues havevery small areas in which to land. After parachute deploy-ment, a skydiver may have a 3 minute parachute ride tothe ground whereas a BASE jumper will have only 10-15seconds! Adrenaline junkies love the danger involved -

there's certainly no room for mis-takes.

There will be a panel of judgesthat award marks for the secondsit takes to open the parachute, theopening angle, the accuracy oflanding and the security through-out the jump.

On Friday, starting at 7am until 12Noon the qualifying rounds willtake place and then later, between5pm and 8pm there will be someexhibition jumps. On Saturdaybetween 7am and 8am the semi-finals will take place and the finalsstraight after.

More demonstration jumps are scheduled between9am - 1:30pm and then again from 4pm until theaward presentations, which will take place at 6:30pm.All times are subject to change at short notice due toweather conditions.

U3A’S MONTHLY MEETINGTHE guest speaker atJavea U3A’s Maymonthly meeting was,as always, in fine voice. Mike Evans, presidentand founder of the CostaBlanca Male Voice Choir, entertained the audienceat the Parador Hotel withan interesting insight intothe history and currentactivities of the popular choir. He illustrated his presentation – entitled“St Leonards to the Costa Blanca MaleVoice Choir” - with photos as well as theintermittent echoes of enchanting choralmusic and singing. Mike explained that StLeonards Church in Chelsham, Surrey, was his inspiration and how, as an 11-year-old Boy Scout, he joined the choirafter being promised “vast amounts ofmoney” to sing at services! He learned to read music and harmoniseon a summer course at the Royal Schoolof Choral Music at Addington Palace andlater learned to play the cornet. He joinedthe RAF in 1961 and during his 38 years’service he played in various bands andgroups as well as a church choir.

In 1989 he moved to Kent andhis love of male voice choirmusic blossomed as he joinedThanet Male Voice Choir andlater sung in Huntingdon MaleVoice Choir inCambridgeshire.Mike moved to Spain (andMoraira) in 1999 and joinedthe Costa Barber Singers. Butmale voice choir singing was

always his first love and in 2007 he startedthe Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir alongwith musical director Heather Butcher.Since then the choir has gone fromstrength to strength and today it has 50members and is about to release a CD.Mike told U3A members: “The ultimate forme is the sound of a male voice choir –the larger the choir, the deeper thesound.”He invited budding choristers to join theband and he assured anybody who mightbe interested: “You don’t have to be ableto read music!” Mike was thanked for hisinformative speech by Javea U3A presi-dent Stephen Burke and presented with abottle of wine …. no doubt to lubricate hisprecious vocal cords!

BBQ Champ or Chump?Watch Teddy Bulbin(played by Gary Johnson)set-up his barbecue inLindsay Johnson's pro-duction of 'TheKidderminster Affair',which plays Javea's Casade Cultura from MondayJuly 6 to Saturday July 11,and you will immediatelyrealize that here is a manwho could well be a hotcontestant in the forth-coming ITV programme BBQ Champ – aGreat British Bake-Off style challengewhich swaps burgers and steaks forpastries and cupcakes.

To Teddy lighting a barbecue is a precisescience. With great care, he builds a bri-quette pyramid and then in the middle of itplaces equidistantly just three fire-lighters.And ,as he will modestly tell you, he cookshis steaks to within a microsecond of per-fection. Steaks, he believes, delicious andsucculent enough to easily win the vote ofAdam Richman and his fellow judges. It is not so muchbeing temperamental, more a case of having a guilty con-science but just one word can turn this potential BBQChamp into a chump or, in the words of his next doorneighbour, Penny, a bloody idiot. HOME sale prices fell by 0.11% in thefirst quarter of 2015 - but this is thelowest drop in value since the start ofthe financial crisis, when the burstinghousing bubble led to property pricesplummeting by an average of 30.4%.

But as home values are still droppingslightly, it means now remains a goodtime to strike while the iron is hot andsnap up one of the many bargains to befound in Spain.

Whilst the UK suffers from a housingshortage nearing crisis point, Spain is inthe opposite situation with a glut of homesfor sale, making it a buyer's market andmeaning purchasers have considerablebargaining power. And what was once anexpensive luxury in 2007 has nowbecome an excellent alternative to a pen-sion fund - but unlike a traditional retire-ment plan, it is one that the investor canuse for some memorable holidays in themeantime.

The average price of a property stands at€1,457.90 per square metre, but the vari-ations are vast, with flats of two or even

three bedrooms needing a bit of cosmeticrenovation starting at as little as €20,000in some parts of the country, and the mostexpensive areas in Spain involving pricesof several million for a top-quality villa with'smart' features to make life easier, centralheating and air-conditioning, cinemas, gyms and indoor and outdoor heatedpools. In order to find out the averageprice per square metre, just under 92,600valuations were carried out across thecountry, both mainland and islands.

And compared with the final three monthsof 2014, when property values fell by0.36%, figures show that once inflationhas been taken into account, prices haveactually grown in the last year by 0.9%.

When inflation is borne in mind, propertieshave fallen in price on average by 36.3%since 2008, when the housing bubble hadundeniably burst, although inflated valuesback then were partly due to banks andsellers over-pricing properties - futurehome values are likely to be more in linewith reality and, in the long term, may riseto those of 2007 again or even more, butthis will be a better gauge of what is

affordable and what buyers are willing topay Homes of less than five years oldcontinue to hold their value better, withaverage prices of €1,723.80 per squaremetre, compared to older properties of€1,448.50 - but this is no indication ofwhat will happen in the long term, sinceonce the current excess of supply beginsto dwindle, it is likely homes over fiveyears old will also rise in value.

Seven of Spain's 17 autonomously-gov-erned regions saw an increase in homeprices year-on-year between the end ofMarch 2014 and the end of March 2015.These were, in many cases, the mostpopular holiday destination regions - theCanary Islands saw a value increase of3.56%, way ahead of its nearest rivalAragón, one of Spain's most heavily-fre-quented skiing destinations, with a rise of1.9%.

Properties in Madrid went up by 1.67%and the Comunidad Valenciana, whichincludes the attractive and dynamic city ofValencia, the tourist belts of the CostaBlanca and the relatively undiscoveredcoastal resort areas in the province of

Castellón saw an overall increase of0.69%.

For popular summer beach tourism areas, only Murcia saw an above-average fall inprices at 1.35%, the same as in theSpanish-owned city-provinces of Ceutaand Melilla on the northern coast ofMorocco, with the other falls in homeprices seen in Asturias, Castilla y León,Navarra, Galicia and the Basque Country. All of these are picturesque, verdantregions with dramatic scenery and a very'northern European' feel, sometimesbeing likened in appearance toSwitzerland, central France or Ireland, with mild summers and, in the case ofGalicia, Asturias and the Basque Country, greater overall wealth than in more south-ern areas.

Figures are not yet available for the sec-ond quarter of 2015, which ends on June30, but the start of summer normally seesan increase in sale prices as this is thetime when most potential buyers fromabroad are more likely to search for theirdream homes.

Property Price Reduction Lowest Since 2008

Visit to Country Ribs in Albir locateddirectly on the beach front with stun-ning views across to Calpe. Ideal forthe whole family Country Ribs is verypopular with the kids, as anAmerican Diner they love the taste ofthe most famous ribs, and burgers.

The menu choice offer something foreveryone and some of the most pop-ular dishes are the ranch style chick-en and the juicy steaks the menu hasmuch more and also a selection oftheir specialities with six great COM-BOS. The variety is amazing mychoice was the COUNTRY RHAP-SODY this caught my eye as itincluded Hungarian Goulashtogether with a mixture ofChicken, Lamb, Spare Ribsand Pork Kebabs. The metaldish that served the foodwas huge and was filled withthe sides of potato wedgesand chips. I can honestly saythe amount of food in theCOMBO was enough for 3or 4 people. Being meatlovers this combo was per-fect, lamb chops cookedover the BBQ together withthe Chicken breast, thespare ribs and kebabs madethe display of meat was sim-

ply incredible not to mention the dishof Hungarian Goulash strategicallypositioned in the centre of the dis-play.

My guests ordered a variety of otherpopular meals, grilled chicken, cheese and bacon burger and thestar of the show was the full rack ofbaby back ribs with a choice of 4tasty sauces. The size of the rack ofribs simply amazed me it took overthe plate, served with the JackDaniels & Coke sticky BBQ sauce. The meat was falling off the boneand was perfectly cooked comple-mented with the tangy original JD &

Coke sauce a smokey but sweetBBQ flavour.

Our bench style table had plenty ofspace to sit our group of five adultsplus the attachment of a high chair tothe end of the table that wasclamped in place by the very friendlyand helpful staff. The restaurant wastaken over by families so it was greatto see that there was no shortage ofhigh chairs and the mums and dadscould enjoy their meals while thesmaller ones were also takin part atthe table.

Country Ribs have been situatedin Albir for many yearsand has built up their rep-utation for the quality offood in a relaxedAmerican style diner. Callthem to make a reserva-tion on 966 865 597

DANGEROUS FOODS FOR DOGS AT CHRISTMASWhich Christmas foods should I avoidgiving my dog?

Christmas is a great time of year andshould be fun for all the family, dogsincluded. Many of us are already awareof some of the potential toxic foods ourdogs can come across and take steps toavoid them.

However, the festive period is one wherewe often introduce all manner of excitingitems into the house that we don’t nor-mally have. Some of these things can bepotentially harmful to our dogs and it’sworth knowing some of the common pit-falls.

We have tried to give you a few of themost common Christmas poisoningsbelow. It goes without saying, if in doubtcontact your vet and they will be able toadvise you.

We also have a useful article on generalcommon poisonings as well as some tipson how to avoid it happening here.

COMMON CHRISTMAS FOODDANGERS FOR DOGS:Grapes

Exactly why and how these are poison-ous to dogs is unknown and the exactvolume needed to cause symptoms isdifficult to predict. Some dogs will eatone or two grapes and become seriouslyill but others can eat many of them with-out apparent signs. The only way to besafe is to keep them out of reach of yourdog.

Christmas Pudding,Christmas Cake andMince Pies

These Christmas fanciesare bad for dogs for anumber of reasons:

Firstly - they are jam-packed full of currentraisins and sultanas. These are all a variationon the ‘grape’ and assuch have the same seri-ous health risks. It iscommon for them toingest far more ‘grapes’in this form than theywould fresh grapesbecause there are somany packed into thesecakes and they aresmaller.

Secondly - they are fullof fat, suet etc which canoften give them severestomach troubles, vomit-ing etc but also, moreworryingly high fat meals

are one of the high risk factors leading topancreatitis. This can be a very seriousand costly disease to treat.

Thirdly – they are usually laced with largeamounts of alcohol which can causemany of the symptoms of intoxicationseen in people.

Chocolate coins and other choccy deco-rations

Most people are aware of the dangers fordogs from eating chocolate and takesteps to avoid leaving any near theirdogs. However, it is not uncommon forpeople to forget about the chocolatecoins or decorations and leave them inan irresistible location. As well as thedangers of the chocolate the actual wrap-ping foil can be problematic as they workthrough the gut system.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUTBEFORE YOU ADOPT A DOG

With the overpopulation in shelters, adopting a dog is one of the bestthings you can do to help this problem.

But, before you go out and adopt a dog, there are some important steps you needto take and questions to ask yourself tomake sure you are ready. From knowinghow to choose the right dog to beingarmed with the information you need todevelop a harmonious relationship withyour new dog, these tips will help prepareyou to step up as the pack leader from dayone!• Take your family and children feelingsabout adopting a dog into consideration.Do you have a routine in place? Do youhave structure in your life? The environ-ment we bring a dog into is very important.Who is going to be doing the dog walking, feeding him, taking him to the vet? Iseveryone on board with bringing a doginto the home?

• Are you honestly ready for the responsi-bility of a dog? Open your mind and deter-

mine where your state of mind is.Do you know what if feels like to becalm and assertive? Why do youwant to adopt a dog? Be honest!Your own behavior will be a directreflection in the dog’s behavior, solook at clues in your life that tell you where

life like? How punctual are you? If youcan’t be honest with yourself, ask yourfriends and ask them to be honest. If youare not reliable or a good manager of timeor if you make excuses for being late, youmight be one of those people who makesexcuses for why they didn’t go on a dogwalk that day or didn’t make time to go tothe park. It might seem like a small minor

detail, but when itcomes to fulfilling yournew dog and keepinghim balanced, theseoversights matter!• Check out how dog-friendly your neigh-bourhood is. How arethe dogs that live nearyou? Is there a park orhiking trails nearby?Where’s the closest vetand 24-hour emer-

gency? Do you have relationships withyour neighbours?• Choose a dog with an energy level equalto or lower than your own. Never adopt adog with higher energy. Consider their ageand your own. A dog in a cage is not goingto give you the reality of their natural ener-gy.• Don’t generalise based on a dog's breed, but do consider the characteristics of that

breed. Just because you loved GermanShepherds as a child doesn’t mean youare at a stage or place in your life to prop-erly care for, stimulate, and exercise sucha smart and powerful dog.• Consider Fostering a Dog First. If you’reunsure of whether the new dog you’vechosen is right for your family andlifestyle, consider fostering before makinga commitment.• Don’t overlook the senior dogs. Seniordogs need homes just as badly as thecute puppies. They may not be suited to ahome with very young children, as they’renot as accustomed to being around kids’high energy. But they are wonderful com-panions for homes that are not as active. They may need less exercise and morehealth care, but the love they give inreturn is the reward.• Don’t make an emotional decision whenchoosing a dog. Going into a shelter isdevastating and sad.• Know what it means to be your dog'spack leader. From day one, establish therelationship and bond with your new dog. • Enjoy the Process of Adopting a Dog.Balanced dogs bring us calm, peace, joy,and love, as much as we bring them. Soget started on the right foot and you canlook forward to a lifetime of happiness andfulfillment with them.

your head is. For example, take a look at your closet. Isit neat and organised?Does that have any cluesas to how you live your life?Your actions tell a story. • Figure out how well youcan schedule your dog intoyour life. What is your work
