CHARITY SHOP THEFTthings must be really tough as thesecond Chance Charity shop in albirwas broken into last week. The shop is located at the back of CentroComercial, off the main road leading downto the beach. The break in happenedsometime in the early hours of Saturdaymorning, as staff at the nearby Lingsrestaurant were still open until after mid-night and did not notice anything unto-ward. The thieves got in via the vents above thedoor and managed to take the safe off thewall, which they took with them andhelped themselves to a selection of sun-glasses and jewelry too. Distressingly forthe volunteers who arrived to open up onSaturday morning, they also carefullyemptied the glass bottle of coins on thecounter that was meant for charity andthrew items off the racks and made a

huge mess. The Policia Local came totake statements but unfortunately they arenot covered on their insurance for the lostmoney – much of which was owing to cus-tomers who had bought in items to sell ona percentage commission. if anyone has a spare safe they are will-ing to donate they would be mostgrateful – their contact details are -966 865 342 and any donations wouldbe much appreciated.By irena Bodnarec.

one of Benidorm´s most popular places - “Levi´sshowboat” in the rincon de Loix, was broken into onsaturday morning. Thieves brazenly jemmied the two sets of front doorsopen with a crowbar at 8:30am, which set the alarm off. Before the police managed to arrive they had succeededin getting away with a small safe, freestanding vendingmachine and the staff tip jar. Owner Wayne Edward Wright and partner Des Bellamywere at the premises as soon they were notified and bylunchtime workmen were already repairing the damageto the doors. Wayne was angered and more upset aboutthe staff tip jar being taken than the other things, but res-olute in his stance that they would be open for businessas usual. They are awaiting the images from the CCTV cameras, which were fully operational during the break in.However, due to the fact that there were two large vansparked directly outside the front door, it masked fromdirect view what was going on inside and didn´t rouse thesuspicions of any passers-by.

Las FaLLas the Fiesta oF san Jose 17th-19th MarCh

For five days the castles, monuments and “mascle-taes” become the protagonists of Benidorm, wherethe smell of gunpowder is interspersed with thesmell of flowers and the music of the bands withthe sound of masclets. A transformation that occursas a prelude to spring, and on March 19th, everythingends and everything begins; with the last of the ashespeople start to dream of Fallas again for the followingyear. The festival of San José takes place in Benidorm

from the 15th to the19th of March. Like the city ofValencia, Benidorm honours San José with Las Fallas -a festival of nightly street parties and rowdy fireworks.Three giant papier-mâché statues (ninots) are erectedand then ceremoniously burned to the ground on thefinal evening. The trio of statues, known as CentralFalla, Rincon Falla and Els Tolls Falla, are constructedby - and placed in - the dif-ferent districts of Benidorm.

The areas try to outdo each other with their huge andelaborate designs and often use the statues to poke funat local celebrities and politicians. The Valencian fiestais celebrated in Benidorm with the erection of the Fallasand there is plenty to enjoy with fireworks and concerts. The ninots are burnt on the 19th and is the best part ofthe festival.

We have over the last few weeks read manyreports about new laws for changing our driv-ing licenses to a Spanish one. Often reportshave been conflicting and confusing.Depending on the newspaper you read or thewebsite you check, everyone has a differenttheory on the new law and whether there is anew law at all.

We spoke to PMR Property Management &Rental and asked their advice on this matterand we received very sound advice. LisaTurner, Director of PMR based in Alfaz del Piwould recommend anyone who is a Residentin Spain to change their Licence for ease ofidentification and communication with theAuthorities and peace of mind. Lisa gave ascenario that if a UK Licence were to be lostand you are Resident in Spain, you would noteasily be able to get a replacement UKLicence from DVLA because you no longerhave a permanent UK address. This could beproblematic as you are always required tohave your Licence with you while driving hereand trying to explain your replacement is com-ing via your best friend’s sister could causeyou more problems with the Police if you arestopped and found not to be carrying one. Ifthe same were to happen and you lost yourSpanish Licence, this can easily be replaced

because you reside here. The Police cannotenforce their penalty points system if yourLicence is not Spanish and as we all know, thelaws can often be misunderstood or miscon-strued even by the authorities themselves. It isa legal requirement in the UK to change yournon British Licence within a certain time frameso we would recommend you apply the samerules while residing here in Spain and carry aSpanish Licence. You can easily change your Licence using the“One Stop Shop” services at PMR. Contactthem on 966260877 or [email protected] or you can visit theiroffices which are open from 10am to 6pm fromMonday to Friday.

Pound hits seven-year high against euro

the pound has reached a more-than seven yearhigh against the euro, a day after the europeanCentral Bank (eCB) began its government bondbuying programme, sterling rose 1% to hit €1.40for the first time since december 2007.

It means UK holidaymakers to the eurozone willhave just over 15% more spending power than ayear ago.

City analysts said continued fears over a Greek exitfrom the eurozone had also helped push the poundhigher against the single currency.Last year, the pound was trading at €1.205, meaningholidaymakers could expect €1.18 for every poundthey exchanged.

UK holidaymakers to Europe would have received€707 for every £600 they exchanged a year ago, butthey would get €822 today. The rise in sterling came after the head of the euro-zone finance ministers' group called on Greece to "stopwasting time" and engage in serious talks on reform.

What's more, the pound to euroexchange rate may continue to fly.

Here's why:1. Sterling may rise, because the UK economy is fore-cast to grow +0.6% in early 2015, faster than at theend of last year.2. The pound could strengthen, because the UK iscreating an astonishing +70,000 new jobs a month, according to statistics body Markit.3. Sterling may climb, because economists say thatthe UK economy is on course for yet another robustperformance in the first quarter.4. The euro may weaken meanwhile, because theEuropean Central Bank is set to begin its €1.1 trillionemergency stimulus next Monday.5. The euro may fall, because prominent Germanpolitician Peter Ramsauer said yesterday that Greecewould be "better off" outside the Eurozone.6. The euro may lose out, because Germany's exportsunexpectedly tumbled –2.1% in January, more thanthe –1.5% forecast.

aries (March 21st-april 20th)

You have a wonderful talent for communicating this whole month, so no matterwhat genre you’re in, be it work or play, you’ll manage to get your messageacross loud and clear. You’re in the right frame of mind to sink your teeth intonew projects. Exciting.

taurus (april 21st-May 21st)

Never one to do things on a whim, you’ll mull over information that’s come yourway and will consider your options from all angles before making any moves. Tryto find the time to do things you enjoy, as you always seem to be doing things forothers.

geMini (May 22nd-June 21st)

You want to get things just right at work, but if you think you’re slipping back a bit, don’t be afraid to ask a trusted friend for a helping hand as they’ll be only tooglad to help you out. It’s all about teamwork this week, so treat your partner well.

CanCer (June 22nd-July 23rd)

Differences of opinion wont really have a bearing on the way you behave, espe-cially if you refuse to side with either contender. Not getting involved in itself mayannoy others, but you have no axe to grind with anyone so why should you putyourself in the firing line.

Leo (July 24th-august 23rd)

Expect a week where there will be a lot of things going on around you. However, you’ll be expected to fulfil specific expectations in a family sense. Don’t getinvolved in any schemes that seem shady to you be they centred around family, friends or acquaintances.

virgo (august 24th-september 23rd)

There’s setbacks at work on the horizon, but with your positive mental attitudeand calm demeanour, you’ll manage to turn them around in no time. If certainpeople are determined to be awkward, keep smiling and continue to be charmingas it’ll totally disarm them.

LiBra (september 24th-october 23rd)

Although the early bird catches the worm this week, don’t work so hard thatyou’re not getting enough sleep. That will just defeat the purpose. Its all aboutfinding a balance. If you’re tired you’ll just get argumentative, and no one wantsthat do they? Get rest.

sCorPio (october 24th-november 22nd)

With the moon in your solar twelfth house at the start of the week, this week willbe quieter than last, but keep checking arrangements before you commit yourselfto anything, as your lethargy could lead to you forgetting things and you maydouble book yourself.

sagittarius (november 23rd-december 21st)

You can instinctively feel yourself coming to the end of a chapter in your life, andalthough there will be moments of nostalgia, you also know that starting a newphase in your life will be exciting and challenging. Its natural to move on soembrace the changes.

CaPriCorn (december 22nd-January 20th)

Your expansive mental outlook and tolerance level make it an excellent time formixing freely with others, especially in the work zone. Planetary trends favouryour professional life this week and could even bring you face to face with longstanding ambitions.

aQuarius (January 21st-February 19th)

Don’t over burden yourself with pointless thankless tasks this week or you’ll beready to explode by the weekend. Be active and enterprising even when othersaround you are not, as having a goal will keep your calm and focused. Maketime to relax at the weekend

PisCes (February 20th-March 20th)

It’s one of those weeks where you’ll be able to turn social advantages into busi-ness opportunities. Everyone you meet seems to have something good to say toyou and about you. Compliments boost your ego and that’s great, but just don’tlet your head be turned.

audi rs Q3 (2015) revieWWhat's powering the

2015 audi rs Q3?The engine is the very same, and veryimpressive, 2.5-litre five-cylinder we knowand love from the RS3 and TT RS. Outputhas warmed to 335bhp thanks to an ECUremap, and torque grows by 22lb ft to332lb ft. The resulting 0-62mph dash isyanked precisely into line with the afore-mentioned AMG. Funny that.

Thanks to a large area under the torquecurve you’re not left wanting for in-gearacceleration – unlike Mercedes’ ultra-boosted, ultra-laggy four-pot turbo, forinstance – and it’s difficult to dislike theoff-beat five-banger thrum.

When cogs do need swapping, the newRS Q3 has another ace up its sleeve. Theseven-speed S-tronic ’box gets a softwareupgrade which bolsters its appeal overthe more sluggish seven-speeder in theGLA, changing gear quicker and moresmoothly than before.

any other technicaltweaks for 2015?

There’s extra sound deadening too, withthe result that even with the Drive Selectsystem (which adjusts steering weighting, throttle response and gear-change swapspeed) in Dynamic, you’ve got a car that’ssurprisingly refined and driveable, even atlow speeds. The optional RS Sports Plusadaptive suspension installed on our carmorphs to match whatever Drive Select is

set to; expect flat, composed handling inDynamic and a far softer edge with morebody-roll in Comfort.

While slightly improving the RS Q3’s fueleconomy, shorter gearing for lower ratiosand a longer seventh gear for cruisingalso improves the way the thing drives, both for high-speed hauling and low-downamusement. It’s addictive fun hammeringup and down the first four gears on a quietB-road – there’s more than a hint of rallycar pedigree here, and we applaud it.But it isn’t all plain sailing for the RS Q3.

The cabin still needs a fair few optionschucked at it before the cheaper plasticsand switchgear from lesser Audis fadeinto insignificance. It feels a little thrifty inthere to carry the RS moniker. Thenthere’s the steering – while recalibratedand decently weighted no matter whichmode you’re in – it still lacks that feedbackso crucial to testing the very outer limits ofthe brilliant Quattro all-wheel-drive sys-tem. Perhaps that’s more a complimenton outright grip than a major dynamicshortfall, but this is meant to be a perform-ance model, even if it’s an SUV.

verdictStill, we’re fond of the sizzling Q3. It’s alivelier thing with bags of character andnow it’s easier to live with too.

But then there’s the big question: whythis over an RS3? For similar money youcan ditch the taller stance, gain the MQBplatform’s versatility, retain the five-potmill and still get Quattro. While the RS Q3is now a better car than the GLA 45 AMG,it might be worth holding on for the hot A3– due next summer – before deciding ifSUV elevation is really a must-have.

Do YOU Want ToStop Smoking

NOW And FOREVER?

Bruises (contusions) are caused when small blood ves-sels under the skin tear or rupture. This is usually fol-lowing a knock, bump or fall which causes blood toleak into the tissues under the skin. Bruises changecolour over two to four weeks from purplish black toreddish blue to yellowish green. Sometimes the area ofthe bruise spreads down the body in the direction ofgravity. Most bruises are not a cause for concern and will fadeaway on their own. A bruise on a leg usually will takelonger to heal than a bruise on the face or arms. However, severe bruising, swelling, and pain thatbegins within 30 minutes of an injury may mean amore serious problem, such as a severe sprain or frac-ture.People that have a tendency to bruise easily often arenot even aware of what has caused a bruise. Bruisingeasily does not always mean that you have a serioushealth problem especially if bruising is minimal or onlyshows up once in a while:

• As adults get older the skin becomes thinner due toreduced flexibility and less fat under the skin. Thesechanges, along with skin damage from exposure to thesun, cause blood ves-sels to break easily, thuscausing bruising. • Women bruise moreeasily than men, especiallyfrom minor injuries on thethighs, buttocks, and upper arms.• A tendency to bruise easily some-times runs in families.

haematomasOccasionally after an injury, blood collectsand pools under the skin (haematoma), givingthe skin a spongy, rubbery, lumpy feel. Ahaematoma usually is not a cause for concern. Itis not the same thing as a blood clot in a vein.

Petechiae and PurpuraPetechiae are pinpoint, round spots that appear on theskin as a result of bleeding under the skin. The bleed-ing causes the petechiae to appear red, brown or pur-ple. They commonly appear in clusters and may looklike a rash. Usually flat to the touch, petechiae don'tdisappear on pressure. Petechiae are tiny. Larger vari-eties of these types of spots are called purpura.Petechiae or purpura may indicate a number of condi-tions, ranging from minor blood vessel injuries to life-threatening medical conditions.

sudden unexplained bruisingSudden unexplained bruising or a sudden increase inthe frequency of bruising may be caused by:• A medicine, such as aspirin or blood thinners (anticoagulants).• A chronic inflammatory disease such as Lupus• Liver disease• A bleeding or clotting disorder such as haemophilia, thrombocytopenia or Von Willebrands’s disease.• Inflammation of a blood vessel (vasculitis).• Infection that causes the build up of toxins in the

blood or tissues (sepsis).• Malnutrition, such as deficien-cies of vitamins B12, C, or K, orfolic acid.• Some types of cancer, suchas Hodgkin's disease, leukaemia, or multiple myelo-ma.

should a person experi-ence any abnormalbruising they shouldseek advice from their g.P.in order to eliminateany medical cause, serious or otherwise.

DANGEROUS FOODS FOR DOGS AT CHRISTMASWhich Christmas foods should I avoidgiving my dog?

Christmas is a great time of year andshould be fun for all the family, dogsincluded. Many of us are already awareof some of the potential toxic foods ourdogs can come across and take steps toavoid them.

However, the festive period is one wherewe often introduce all manner of excitingitems into the house that we don’t nor-mally have. Some of these things can bepotentially harmful to our dogs and it’sworth knowing some of the common pit-falls.

We have tried to give you a few of themost common Christmas poisoningsbelow. It goes without saying, if in doubtcontact your vet and they will be able toadvise you.

We also have a useful article on generalcommon poisonings as well as some tipson how to avoid it happening here.

COMMON CHRISTMAS FOODDANGERS FOR DOGS:Grapes

Exactly why and how these are poison-ous to dogs is unknown and the exactvolume needed to cause symptoms isdifficult to predict. Some dogs will eatone or two grapes and become seriouslyill but others can eat many of them with-out apparent signs. The only way to besafe is to keep them out of reach of yourdog.

Christmas Pudding,Christmas Cake andMince Pies

These Christmas fanciesare bad for dogs for anumber of reasons:

Firstly - they are jam-packed full of currentraisins and sultanas. These are all a variationon the ‘grape’ and assuch have the same seri-ous health risks. It iscommon for them toingest far more ‘grapes’in this form than theywould fresh grapesbecause there are somany packed into thesecakes and they aresmaller.

Secondly - they are fullof fat, suet etc which canoften give them severestomach troubles, vomit-ing etc but also, moreworryingly high fat meals

are one of the high risk factors leading topancreatitis. This can be a very seriousand costly disease to treat.

Thirdly – they are usually laced with largeamounts of alcohol which can causemany of the symptoms of intoxicationseen in people.

Chocolate coins and other choccy deco-rations

Most people are aware of the dangers fordogs from eating chocolate and takesteps to avoid leaving any near theirdogs. However, it is not uncommon forpeople to forget about the chocolatecoins or decorations and leave them inan irresistible location. As well as thedangers of the chocolate the actual wrap-ping foil can be problematic as they workthrough the gut system.

Preventing tiCKs on your Pets

dogs are very susceptible to tickbites and tickborne diseases.Vaccines are not available for all thetickborne diseases that dogs can get,and they don’t keep the dogs frombringing ticks into your home. Forthese reasons, it’s important to use atick preventive product on your dog.

Tick bites on dogs may be hard todetect. Signs of tickborne diseasemay not appear for 7-21 days orlonger after a tick bite, so watch yourdog closely for changes in behavioror appetite if you suspect that yourpet has been bitten by a tick.

To reduce the chances that a tick willtransmit disease to you or your pets:

Check your pets for ticks daily, espe-cially after theyspend time out-doors.If you find a tick onyour dog, removeit right away.Ask your veteri-narian to conducta tick check at

each exam.Talk to your veterinarian about tick-borne diseases in your area.Reduce tick habitat in your yard.Talk with your veterinarian aboutusing tick preventives on your pet.

note: Cats are extremely sensitiveto a variety of chemicals. do notapply any insect acaricides orrepellents to your cats withoutfirst consulting your veterinarian!

TRAVEL AROUNDLas Fallas is undoubtedly one of the mostunique and crazy festivals in Spain. Thenagain, Spain is a country known for itsunique and odd fiestas. What started as afeast day for St. Joseph, the patron saintof carpenters, has evolved into a 5-day,multifaceted celebration involving fire.Valencia, a quiet city with a population ofjust over 1 million, swells to an estimatedthree million flame-loving revelers duringLas Fallas celebrations.

Las Fallas literally means "the fires" inValencian. The focus of the fiesta is thecreation and destruction of ninots (“pup-pets” or “dolls”), which are huge card-board, wood, paper-machè and plasterstatues. The ninots are extremely lifelikeand usually depict bawdy, satirical scenesand current events. A popular theme ispoking fun at corrupt politicians andSpanish celebrities. The labor intensiveninots, often costing up to 66, 227€, arecrafted by neighborhood organizationsand take almost the entire year to con-struct. Many ninots are several stories talland need to be moved into their final loca-tion of over 350 key intersections andparks around the city with the aid ofcranes on the day of la plantà (the rising).

The ninots remain in place until March19th, the day known as La Cremá (theburning). Starting in the early evening, young men with axes chop cleverly-hid-den holes in the statues and stuff themwith fireworks. The crowds start to chant, the streetlights are turned off, and all ofthe ninots are set on fire at exactly 12a.m. (midnight). Over the years, the localbomberos (firemen) have devised uniqueways to protect the town's buildings frombeing accidentally set on fire by theninots: such as neatly covering store-fronts with fireproof tarps. Each year, oneof the ninots is spared from destruction bypopular vote. This ninot is called the ninot

indultat (the pardoned puppet) and isexhibited in the local Museum of the Ninotalong with the other favorites from yearspast. The origin of las Fallas is a bit murky, butmost credit the fires as an evolution ofpagan rituals that celebrated the onset ofspring and the planting season. In the six-teenth century, Valencia used streetlightsonly during the longer nights of winter. The street lamps were hung on woodenstructures, called parots, and as the daysbecame longer the now-unneeded parotswere ceremoniously burned on St.Joseph's Day. Even today the fiesta hasretained its satirical and working-classroots, and the well-to-do and faint-of-heartof Valencia often ditch out of town duringLas Fallas.

Besides the burning of the ninots, there isa myriad of other activities during the fies-ta. During the day, you can enjoy anextensive roster of parades, paella con-

tests and beauty pageants aroundthe city. Spontaneous fireworks dis-plays explode everywhere during thedays leading up to La Crema, but thehighlight is the daily mascletá whichoccurs in the Plaza Ayuntamiento atexactly 2pm. When the string-linedfirecrackers are ignited, the thunder-ous, rythmitic sounds they make canbe considered music as the soundintensifies in volume. Those fire-crackers timed to fall to the ground lit-erally shake the floor for next ten min-utes, as the mascletá is more forauditive enjoyment than visual.Falles can be found in the Plaza delPilar and the Plaza de la Merced, another near the ConventoJerusalén, and others on AlmiranteCadarso, Reino de Valencia, Suecaand Cuba streets.
