Where To Get Dear ReadersWet wet wet..... the rain has got to most of us over the lastweek and today in some parts of the North Costa Blanca ithas been hammering down. Grey skies, rough seas andloads of down pours is not why we're here at all. I was talking to a couple staying in Albir at the weekend whohad told me that their week here in the Costa Blanca hadbeen wet cold and miserable especially at night, as theirapartment had very little to offer by way of heating and itwas only the extra blankets that saved them from sleepingin the cold. Most of us living in Spain know only too well thatthe properties (in the main) are not great in the wintermonths with poor insulation, poor heating solutions, and thecold nights can be rather uncomfortable if you are notgeared up for it.Well the good news is SUNSHINE and loads of it fromThursday onwards, with temperatures on Friday and for theweekend rising up to 23 degrees so YIPEEE......at last theend of March will give us a glimmer of real Spring sun andgoodbye to the rain until next Autumn (we hope).

Easter is looming and in only just over a week it is April, which starts with the long bank holiday weekend. Thursday2nd April is Maundy Thursday which commemorates JesusChrist's institution of the Eucharist during the last supper, asdescribed in the Christian Bible. This is a National holiday inSpain, followed by Good Friday on the 3rd.Look out for our bumper issue next week with everythingpossible for your Easter holiday reading including extra puz-zle pages, The Weekly Buzz "What's on guide for Easter"and a few other surprises lined up for everyone..... one lastthing a reminder to set your clocks to Summer daylight sav-ing time on Sunday 29th March, put them forward 1 hour.So until next week all the best

On Monday 23rd March acourt case began involv-ing the officials accusedof alleged looting duringthe construction of TerraMitica theme park.

This is the first corruptioncase involving top politi-cians from the ValencianPartido Popular (PP) andaccording to the PublicMinistry these “so-called”businessmen hatched aplot, in collusion with theheads of the theme park,to defraud the Treasury forcorporation tax and IVA(VAT) to the amount of€4.4 million.

This long process startedwith one complaint fromthe Agencia Tributaria (TaxOffice) in 2005. It wasshelved twice, but now

Luis Esteban (former pres-ident), Miguel Navarro (for-mer director-general),Justo Valverde (formertrading director) andAntonio Rincon (formertechnical director) are sit-ting in the dock.

35 individuals and 26 com-panies will take to thestand for 70 sessions dur-ing the proceedings, whichwill last until September. There will be over 120 wit-nesses called and thejudge has requested thatbail is set at over €11 mil-lion.

The public prosecutor’soffice has asked forEsteban to receive sevenyears imprisonment forfraud and tax offences, and ten years for the other

three involved – but one ofthe periods when the menwere in businessunchecked has expired.

It has been fifteen yearssince these corruptionplots were uncovered. Atthe time the PP was man-aging theme parks, racetracks and film studios withpublic money, plus MRIsand health care. Most ofthe politicians were not

qualified for the job theyheld, raised to positions ofpower simply on family orfriend affiliation.

The worse is the negativeimage which is projectedon Terra Mitica, now man-aged by a private compa-ny, and on the town ofBenidorm where the impli-cation of “corruption” willtake a long time to disap-pear.

THE GREEN PARTY AGAINST ANIMAL ABUSEIn agreement with the new EUstrategy concerning animal wel-fare and other Valencian towns, the ‘Compromis Los Verdes’ partyhas submitted a municipal motionto the Benidorm registry for thetown to be declared “a townagainst animal abuse”.

The Town Hall would have to con-duct campaigns to promote aware-ness, especially at schools, and theywill have to create a new protocolwhich guides officials and localpolice on how to proceed afterreceiving a notice of abandonment,

loss or animal abuse.

The mentioned campaigns wouldhave the cooperation of theBenidorm Society for the Preventionof Cruelty to Animals and Plants(SPAP Benidorm) and all veterinaryclinics and pet stores who want to beinvolved.

The Benidorm sports centre‘Palau d’Esports L’Illa’ reopenedits doors on March 24th afterbeing closed for two weeks due toan outbreak of Legionnaires, which was produced in the pool’slocker room showers. Six peoplewere affected and five of themwere hospitalized. All are recover-ing successfully.

The Public Health Department hasauthorized the reopening after certi-fying that the premises are totallysafe and there is no trace of the bac-teria after the three cleaning and dis-infecting processes… as confirmedby Head of Health Department, MªAngeles Valdievieso.

The reopening will be partial; thegym and pool will be closed for a fewmore days. They will be opened assoon as the locker room ceilings areclean, said Juan Ramon Martinez,Head of Sports Department. Thismeans the centre will be 100% oper-ational in time to hold the 25thNational Tournament of ElectronicDarts this weekend, which involves6,000 participants.

The Partido Popular (PP) has raisedthe need for taking measures toensure the gym and pool facilitiescomply with all regulations, to avoidany further incidences. There havebeen complaints about the lack ofmaintenance from ‘Levantina de

Servicios Acuaticos’ (the companywho manages both areas) since lastJuly, including not servicing thedehumidification machine regularlyor sorting out the mould and mildewin the ‘Palau’ corridors.

SPORTS CENTRE REOPENSAFTER OUTBREAK

The rains in the Marina Baixa area during the lastweek have not been enough to ease the region’sdrought. The Guadalest reservoir has measured arise of 0.03 cubic hectometres, but this is only 33% ofits capacity.

The Amadorio reservoir however is losing water everyweek, as outlined in the periodical reports sent by theJucar River Basin Authority (CHJ). The last measure-ments show it has lost 0.02 cubic hectometres during thelast week, and is only at 6.06% of its capacity.Last week’s rains have been of low intensity and spo-

radic, so in towns like Benidorm, Altea, Alfaz del Pi andVillajoyosa it has only rained 15 litres per cubic metreduring the whole week. Meanwhile in other areas of theValencian Region they have had flooding and riverswelling alerts.

The reason why it has rained more in other areas is thewind. If the wind blows from North-East (as has hap-pened) the clouds arrive to the Marina Alta, L’Alcoia-ElComtat and Alt Vinalopo areas and then they are trappedby the mountains and release most of the water, whichthen cannot reach the Marina Baixa area.

RECENT RAIN STILL ISN’T ENOUGH

The Councillor of Finance for Javea, Oscar Anton, has presented the figures of the personalised pay-ment plan the Town Hall has offered to taxpayers, soallowing them to organize their taxpayments to best suit their economies. This scheme could be used either topre-pay all fees at the beginning of thisyear, so obtaining a bonus of 4%, or toplan payments in instalments through-out the year.

The payment periods were opened in lateDecember and up until the 5th March atotal of 1,557 plans have been sub-scribed. Of these, most are the pre-pay-ment format, from which the council has already collected€1,136,634 in the first quarter; also more than 400 instal-ment schemes have been set up by the treasury depart-ment, which expects to receive more than €300,000throughout the year.

The pre- payment of municipal taxes, and the correspon-ding benefit of the bonus, is still open, those interestedcan visit the treasury department for information.

Anton pointed out that the good reactionto this new system, breaks up the rigidfiscal calendar, allowing the Town Hallto collect money throughout the year.Especially noticeable during the first fewweeks of the year, sufficient liquiditywas achieved by the Treasury to avoidhaving to resort to loans. The Councillorexplained that the municipal coffersconsequently benefitted from not havingto pay interest and accordingly to obtainsavings that enables them to offer

bonuses to early payers, The Councillor took this oppor-tunity to thank the staff of the Treasury department andthe Citizens Advice Bureau (Help desk -OAC) for thegreat work done during the first weeks of the year dealingwith the high demand for personalised schemes.

CRAFT FAIR BACK THIS WEEKDue to the bad weather forecast the craft people whoset up their stalls every Saturday morning in thesquare in front of the Post Office in Jávea, decided tocancel the fair this week. But, to their annoyance thisSaturday, the 21st, proved to be a nice spring day!The artesans want to appologize to all who came tosee them and only found an empty square.

They promise to be there this Saturday (the 28th - if theweather permits!), but the next week, Easter Saturday, they have to give it another miss, because the square willnot be available. After Easter, from the 4th of April, theyhope to be able to set up stall every Saturday again till theend of May. If you want to see if the fair is on, who is com-

SPAIN ATTRACTIVE TO INVESTORS

According to a recent study carried out byleading commercial property and real estateservices consultants, CBRE, 15% ofEuropean investors placed Spain as theirfavourite investment destination, behind onlythe United Kingdom, which was chosen by31% of the investors surveyed.

This demonstrates that the improvement inthe Spanish economyis being reflectedin the opinion ofreal estateinvestors, whichputs the country at the samelevel as Germany for thefirst time, and indicatesthat real estate invest-ment in 2015 will consol-idate the trend of the pre-vious year, when theinvestment in Spainexceeded 10 billioneuros.

The main reason for this posi-tive trend is that the demand is no longer

focused only on prime products in the majorcities but has now spread to a broader spec-trum. Diversification into new locations andalternative products makes it more likely thatthis trend will be maintained, said the expertsfrom CBRE.

As part of this strategy of diversification, 32%of the investors have directed their interesttowards real estate debt, which has estab-

lished itself as the most popular alternativesector, reaching a volume of 49

billion euros in 2014,compared to 10 billion in

2012, while 27% of theinvestors opted for investment

in student residences, followed bythe leisure and health sectors, both

with 17%.

Another of the conclusions of thisreport is that Madrid remains in secondposition, after London, with regard to

which cities are most attractive for invest-ment, and stands ahead of Paris, Berlin andMilan, while Barcelona takes the eleventhplace in this ranking.

BUYING a property on Spain's coastsor islands could help alleviate winterdepression – it's official.Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) as aresult of lack of daylight is surprisinglycommon, leading to lethargy, feelinggloomy and craving junk food, since natu-ral light raises cortisol levels in the brainand leads to better concentration, mentalsharpness and feelings of wellbeing.

In fact, the Online Psychology Degreewebsite says exposure to additional day-light alleviates symptoms for between50% and 80% of SAD sufferers.Add to this that the Mediterranean andsouthern areas of Spain, and even theCanary Islands which are an hour behind, have record amounts of annual sunshine, including when the weather is cold, a

break on the Costas could be the key tobeating winter blues.

With sunlight at 325 days a year theattraction to live in sunny Spain is theanswer for those who cannot cope withthe long cold and gloomy winter months inthe UK.Even though this does not mean beachand pool weather year-round, these areasstill have milder winters than northernEurope and sunlight instead of grey skiesmakes life easier to bear in the chilliermonths of the year. The vast majority of property buyers whochoose Spain say the better weather isone of the many factors they opt for eithera holiday home or permanent residencethere.

And cloudy skiesand dark nightselsewhere in thenorthern hemi-sphere could wellhave something todo with the fact thatsales of homes inSpain have risen inthe last month, pushing propertyvalues up.Foreign buyersshelled out justover €6 billion onproperty in Spain

between January and September inclu-sive last year, according to the country'sministry of public works and infrastruc-ture, a rise of 30% on the same period in2013.

They accounted for 13% of homes boughtin Spain in 2014, the ministry reveals, andBritish purchasers continue to lead theway with 17% of non-Spaniards buying ahome in the country being from the UK.The weather aspect means that, not sur-prisingly, the regions of Andalucía andValencia were the most popular with buy-ers - areas that include the Costa del Sol,Costa Blanca, Costa del Azahar and theCanary Islands.

Home values were up by 0.2% inFebruary this year - the most recent sta-tistics available - compared to January, with an average property price across thecountry of €1,595 per square metre -approximately €159,500 for a large, three-bed apartment or a small villa or town-house.

However, the great news for SAD suffer-ers seeking a bolthole in sunlight is thatone of Spain's 'brightest' regions being inAlicante and the North Costa Blanca hassome of the lowest home values, meaningbargains galore.

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

It’s time to put practical matters and work matters to one side and focus on yourpersonal and intimate relationships, as they’ve been left on the back burner fortoo long. Make your lover your whole focus this week and do what you can toplease them. It’s only fair.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

The lunar high lights up your life and shows others that you’re a very positivedriving force. You work hard to achieve success and you don’t allow anyone’snegative responses to hold you back from your objectives. Keep your eyes openfor new love. It’s coming.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Don’t believe everything you hear in your career zone this week, especially ifsomeone has something to gain by getting you out of the picture. You’ve beendown this road before so keep your eyes and ears open. Jealousy is a terriblething. Don’t buy into it.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

It’s another week of minor, petty conflicts with colleagues and friends and you’restarting to tire of the incessant back biting. Do what you can to create a moreharmonious atmosphere even if it means your own projects have to take a backseat. It’s temporary.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

You’ll have the gift of the gab and the ability to charm the birds from the trees thisweek, so bosses may give you some extra responsibilities at work, and there’snothing you like more than being in charge. Don’t abuse this power. This couldbe a secret

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

It’s all very well being measured and weighing up the pros and cons of a workingsituation, but you cant apply that criteria to love and romance. You have to leadwith your feelings, your emotions, your impulses. Yes you have them, so stopmessing around. Go for it.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

The time is now right to go out on a limb and take a chance, just not over moneythough, but everything else is fair game. Avoid confusion in personal relation-ships by being scrupulously honest with partners and family. Clear the decks ofthe old to be able to move

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

Don’t let the lunar low at the start of the week hold you back. Yes you may feel abit more emotional or out of sorts than usual, but you instinctively know this willpass, so don’t buy into it. Keep a low profile until you’re confident that you cantake the lead

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

You’re feeling confident and creative, so now would be a good time to think aboutthe changes you want to make at home. Firing up everyone else’s enthusiasmwont be hard for you, as others see you as a natural leader when it comes tothings like this. Go

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

You’re at your most comfortable at home this week, as the world at large sudden-ly seems like a threatening place. Some of your duties and responsibilities atwork unnerve you. Maybe this is a good time for a sit down with bosses to re-asses your job description.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

Family trends all look good now, so there may be small rewards coming in.These gains may be financial or they may be emotional but either way, you’reglad they’re on the way. Don’t compare yourself to others at work or play. You’redifferent to everyone else.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

Work matters continue to be productive and you’ll benefit from taking on newtasks. See existing situations from a different angle and that will help too. You’remaking your own luck as you go along and its much more satisfying when you dosomething on your own merit.

To these eyes, it’s a more coherent design than its pred-ecessor, but it’s also moving towards German appliance.Like the previous 508 or not, at least it was undeniably aPeugeot; the new one could almost be a Volkswagen.

Opening the door to a mid-spec Allure diesel sedan, priced from €45000,90 plus on-road costs and the traditional 508 top-seller,the immediate waft of quality leather trim entices. Settlinginto the comfortable seat furthers this feeling as you notethe 7.0-inch touch-screen.

The contrast is in the rear, where the centre fold-out arm-rest houses two substantial cup-holders for rear-seatpassengers, who also gain their own climate-controlzones to go with decent leg and head room; is Peugeotafter a slice of the silver service taxi market?Regardless, the 508 does feel smaller than large sedanssuch as the Hyundai Genesis and Ford Falcon. Think ofit as a larger medium sedan, such as a Toyota Camry, and you’d be closer to the mark.

In front, there’s a large steering wheel, the Peugeot lionfront and centre, while new plastic paddle-shifters feelalmost brittle to the touch. The same can be said of thecabin plastics, which feel harder than you may expect, with the exception of the soft, beautifully-damped ‘grab’handles. Overall, the Peugeot is a curious amalgam ofquality and cost containment.

Firing up the 120kW/340Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged dieselfour-pot reveals a sophisticated oiler under-bonnet, idlingwith little of the vibration generally associated with anengine of this type. The gated gearshift for the six-speedautomatic transmission lacks a smooth action, but per-haps that was due to the ‘newness’ of the tested vehicle. With the traditional torque converter gearbox, drive take-

up is smooth and the diesel engine continues to impress, being grunty enough to spin up the wheels away fromintersections but quiet enough to enjoy a motorway con-versation without a hint of raised voice. Even droppingdown a couple of gears and hitting the throttle fails to dis-rupt its composure, the engine actually taking on a pleas-ant induction note under power.

In practice, the 5.7L/100km claimed fuel consumption fig-ure is hard to match, even with motorway runs. Therecord shows 8.9L/100km in general driving.

Moving onto the newly-powered entry-level 508 Activepetrol (available from €35,000 plus on-road costs), itdoes lose some luxuries, but immediately feels a bettervalue proposition. It retains key upgrades such as thenavigation and reversing camera, but does without thekeyless entry/go and quad-zone climate, though it stilloffers dual-zone and rear-seat ventilation.

The seats, now combined cloth and leather, remain com-fortable and the new driveline is even smoother than inthe diesel, while producing 121kW/240Nm from a tur-bocharged 1.6-litre petrol four that consumes a claimed5.8L/100km.

The Aisin six-speed auto loses 2kg and offers longer highratios to further aid efficiency, while the engine uses idle-stop technology and adopts trick items such as an on-demand water pump to further boost its green creden-tials.

The petrol-powered 508 immediately feels the better-resolved package. Its relative lack of low-down torquemeans you won’t be scrabbling for traction away fromintersections but the engine remains smooth and offersgood response on light throttle loads which, let’s face it,is where it will be doing most of its work. It will also revout keenly, though there’s no real point as there’s no realpower peak to be chasing. Fuel consumption also goesthrough the roof, sitting at 10.1L/100km over curvy roadloop that encouraged low-gear acceleration out of tighthairpins.

The Active also feels lighter on its feet at all times, ridingbetter over bumps and turning-in more keenly. Even thesteering feels improved, though it is still slow in its off-centre reaction. Braking, incidentally, is impressive ineither variant, with consistent pedal feel and strong stop-ping power.

At €6000 less than the Allure, it is the 508 Active that isthe better overall proposition, though it is the market thatwill dictate if that pricing is correct, with Falcon, HoldenCommodore, Toyota Avalon and even Skoda Superboptions available for less money.Engine: 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol, 2.0-litrefour-cylinder turbo-dieselOutput: 121kW/240Nm, 120kW/340NmTransmission: Six-speed automaticFuel: 5.8L/100km, 5.7L/100km (ADR Combined)CO2: 134g/km, 149g/km (ADR Combined)Safety rating: Five-star (ANCAP)

VEGETARIAN AND PREGNANT?Everybody knows that a balanced, healthy diet is essen-tial in pregnancy. So, what about expectant mums whoare vegetarian or even vegan?

It is vital to provide enough nutrients for the pregnantwoman’s own health as well as for the development andgrowth of the baby during pregnancy.

Some of the biggest concerns is that vegetarian andvegan mums-to-be need to make sure they get enoughiron, vitamin B12, vitamin D and calcium. Alternativesneed to be found!

IronGood sources of iron for vegetarians and vegans are:• pulses• dried fruit such as apricots• dark green vegetables• wholemeal bread• fortified breakfast cereals (with added iron)

• eggs (for vegetarians whoinclude them in their diet)

Vitamin B12 Good sources of vitamin B12for vegetarians are:• milk andcheese

• eggs

G o o ds o u r c e s

for vegetar-ians andvegans are:• fortifiedb r e a k f a s tcereals

• fortified soyadrinks• yeast extractsuch as MarmiteAs sources for veg-ans are limited, avitamin B12 sup-plement may

also be needed. If you are vegetarian or vegan yourMidwife should check your levels.

Vitamin D Vitamin D is found in meat, oily fish and eggs, but yourbody can also make vitamin D when your skin is exposedto summer sunlight. This is one of the many advantagesof living in Spain! However, for vegetarians and vegans sunshine is notenough and supplements will be necessary.

CalciumCalcium intake is usually not a particular problem for veg-etarians as calcium is found in dairy products. However, for vegans alternative sources need to be found, such as:

• fortified soya, rice and oat drinks• calcium-set tofu• sesame seeds• pulses• bread• dried fruit• dark-green leafy vegetables

When in doubt, speak to your Midwife! This article was provided by Family Medical Centre Albir

TRAVEL AROUNDMurcia Spain with its about 300 000inhabitants lies about 75 km south ofAlicante about 30 km west ofTorrevieja. The city of Murcia can bereached via the national road E15 fromAlicante. You can also arrive in thisinteresting city by bus or train.

Embedded in between the mountains ofthe Sierra de Orihuela and the Cresta deGallo lies the city which, due to its largeand sophisticated watering system, isfamous for the mouth watering fruit andvegetables it produces.

From a tourist point of view Murcia offersa huge amount of interesting places tovisit as the history of the city goes back tothe years 800, when it was originallyfounded. Certainly amongst the famousvisiting points for any traveller is theCathedral de Santa Maria. Finished in the15th century the cathedral is the mostimpressive monument of Murcia.

The city is divided by the Segura Riverand is known for its beautiful BaroqueCathedral, Almudi Palace and the castleof Monteagudo ( where the Arab influencecan be well appreciated ), a fortress fromthe 11th c., the Market de Veronicas, theMalecon Garden, the University ofMurcia, the Casino (A Murcian institutionin Calle Trapería - its ballroom is decorat-ed in the style of Luis 15th), and theMuseum Ramon Gay, which was inaugu-rated in 1990 when the artist was 82years old, and also includes other worksof art from other artists. Ramon Gaya wasinfluenced by famous artists such asVazquez and Rembrandt, to give you anidea of the intensity of his work. The cathedral, which is located at theplaza del Cardinal Belluga, just next to theriver, has got different entrance doors, allof which have on their own a treasure.

The main entrance, calledPuerta Del Perdon, thenorth door, Portada DeLas Cadenas and thePortada De Los Apostoleslead you into the impres-sive Capilla Mayor(Chappel) decorated withlots of gold. When youtake a tour around thecathedral of Murcia, makesure you visit the museuminside the cathedral, where many more detailsare explained.

Right outside theCathedral you will find the city hall and thePalacia Episcopal, the residency of theBishop of Murcia. The variety of muse-ums, from the archeological to the muse-um for water systems, the science muse-um, to the museo de bellas Artes whichshows art from Ballester and Gayaamongst others, means there is some-thing of interest for every visitor.Murcia is the perfect city for strollingaround (and a terrible one to drive in, withvery complicated one-way systems andcrowded car-parks). Everything worthseeing is within walking distance. Themost famous commercial streets areTrapería, Platería and la Avda. Alfonso Xel Sabio. The Paseo del Malecón near theRiver Segura is also a pleasant walk outof the city and then back again.

Churches and Convents worth visitinginclude: Santa Ana church, San Andréschurch, San Miguel church. San Nicoláschurch; San Juan de Dios church andmuseum, Las Agustinas monastery is just5km away. Nuestra Sra. de la Fuensantasanctuary has great views of the city.Shopping: The most typical things to buyto eat in Murcia are meat pies (including

deer pie) from Bonache (in the prettyplaze de las Flores - Flowers square).Shops in the Trapería and Platería arealso worth a look. The Verónicas marketis good for famous Murcian market-gar-

den products, fish and seafood.

On the outskirts of the city you will findtwo very large shopping centres, IKEAand the Real Murcia football stadium.

HAMILTON DEAL NEARS COMPLETIONLewis Hamilton hopes his new deal with Mercedes willbe signed before this weekend’s Malaysia Grand Prix.

Negotiations were put on hold by Hamilton ahead oflast year’s Russian GP to allow the Briton to concen-trate on his title duel with team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Talks resumed during pre-season testing this winter andthe partnership which secured both championships in2014 looks set to be extended.

“It is going back between the lawyers so hopefully it isdone before the weekend,” Hamilton told Sky SportsNews HQ.

“That would be great, but if not in due time.”

The interminable delay in Hamilton putting pen to paperhas prompted speculation that the 30-year-old could be

considering a bombshell switch to Ferrari. Whirling therumour mill into life on Monday, The Daily Mail addedfuel to the fire by declaring that ‘the Scuderia’s presi-dent, Sergio Marchionne, rates Hamilton top of the driv-ers available to him'.

ENGLAND HAMMERFRANCE IN VAIN

England won an extraordinary battle butagonisingly lost the war as they beatFrance by a record 55-35 in an extraodri-nary Six Nations finale on Saturday butcame up short of the 26-point victory theyneeded to deny Ireland a second succes-sive title.

After 80 unforgettable min-utes, England were ham-mering the French line insearch of one moreconverted try thatwould have given themthe championship butcould not quite completethe job in one of the mostremarkable tests everseen at Twickenham.

After Ireland's victory overScotland England neededto win by a margin they hadmanaged only once in acentury of matches againstFrance and it looked animpossible task afterFrance led 15-7 midwaythrough the first half.

Stuart Lancaster's sidesurged back, however, withscore after score to keeptheir hopes alive, althoughFrance, playing their bestrugby of the campaign, refused to lie down.

When the whistle finally sounded Englandwere left second in the standings for thefourth year in a row and France fourth, inthe bottom half of the table for the fourthsuccessive season.

"I'm gutted really," Lancastertold the BBC. "It was one ofthe most courageous per-formances I've seenfrom a team. It was anunbelievable game ofrugby.

"The first two France tries hurt us.But to come back like we did -- it willgo down as one of the great games ofrugby."England were rocked by conceding twotries in a five-minute spell in the first halfby Sebastien Tillous-Bord and NoaNakaitaci which turned a 7-3 deficit into a15-7 lead after Ben Youngs had crossedfor the hosts after two minutes.

England hit back through Anthony Watsonand a second for Youngs to lead 27-15 athalftime and the tries continued to flowafter the restart as Maxime Mermoz and

George Ford each crossed under theposts.Jack Nowell produced a brilliant finish toscore again for England but prop VincentDebaty somehow galloped 70 metres toreply for France after a great break byNakaitaci.

Billy Vunipola bundled over at one endand Benjamin Kayser did the same at theother before Nowell's second tookEngland beyond their previous highestscore against France after their 2001 48-19 win and in sight of glory.

They pounded the line in a deafeningfinale but France, who had concededonly two tries in their previous fourgames, held out, leaving 82 000England fans breathless, exhilaratedand hugely disappointed all at thesame time.

When it comes tosetting records,Roger Federer,Rafael Nadal andNovak Djokovic --the leading threemembers of tennis'Big Four -- are usedto it.

No one, for exam-ple, has won moremen's singles grandslams thanFederer's 17. Nadal is the lone player toclaim the French Open nine times andwhen Djokovic captured the AustralianOpen for the fifth time in February, hematched Federer's Open Era haul.Djokovic tied the Swiss again Sunday inanother category when he beat his 33-year-old rival 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-2 for a fourthtitle at the BNP Paribas Open in IndianWells. Federer, too, owns four IndianWells trophies.

It was a land-mark 50th titleoverall and in afew weeksDjokovic willovertake Nadaland move intosixth spot inweeks at No. 1.

Djokovic wascruising inSunday's final,

up a set and a break, but was peggedback when Federer rallied to force a sec-ond-set tiebreak.

Serving at 5-4, Djokovic surprisinglystruck two double faults in a row.

He recovered, however, to overcomeFederer for the second year in a row in theIndian Wells final, last year's edition culmi-nating in a third-set tiebreak.

MERCEDES TRIED TOSAVE GERMAN GP

Mercedes offered a "significant contri-bution" to save the German Grand Prix, however, even their financial offer wasnot enough to sweeten the deal.

Although the Nurburgingwas scheduled to hostthis year's grand prix, thecircuit's new ownersfailed to reach an agree-ment with F1 supremoBernie Ecclestone.

And with Hockenheim declining the race, the FIA announced on Friday that therewould be no German GP in 2015.

Motorsport's governing body stated that"the German Grand Prix has been with-drawn as the CRH and promoter did notreach agreement." And that was despiteMercedes trying their best to sweeten thedeal.

For the reigning World Champions theGerman GP marks one of their two homeraces as it also does for driver Nico

Rosberg. As such, Mercedes offered tohelp finance a race at Hockenheim. That, though, was turned down.A Mercedes spokesman told the

Observer: "The organi-sation of the race calen-dar and of individualevents is a matter forthe FIA, the commercialrights holder and theindividual promoters.

"In principle, we do notbelieve it is the job of the competingteams to provide financial support for indi-vidual events and we do not believe this isa sustainable model for the future.

"Nevertheless, the German GP is a corerace on the Formula 1 calendar and wehave a significant interest in this race tak-ing place. "Mercedes-Benz has participated in dis-cussions and offered a significant contri-bution to support a successful GermanGP, at the Hockenheimring, in 2015. "Thisoffer was, unfortunately, not accepted."
