STATE PENSION CHANGES FOR EXPATSBy SPENCER WILLIAMS

As reported in the Telegraph, the cut-off point will be reduced from 13 weeks spent overseas to just four from next April, Chancel-lor George Osborne announced.

Pension credit is an extra pay-ment that guarantees most people over the age of 62 a minimum income. Those on housing benefit will also be hit by the same reduction, which is often claimed with the pension credit.

This could leave those who visit Spain during the cold British winters for health or economic or even fam-ily reasons in a bit of a conundrum.

The single-tier state pension will be worth £155.65 per week from next April.

This will also mean that it will take longer to get a full state pension from next year as well with Nation-al Insurance payments needing to rise to 35 years instead of 30 years.

This will also make it more difficult for those that may have

spent time working overseas and have not contributed to-wards their National Insurance.

For some expats who have worked abroad all or most of their lives could find it difficult to qualify as you need a minimum of 10 qualifying years of National Insurance Contributions

However you can use two years of work in another EEA country to top up contributions if for instance you have worked for at least eight years in the UK and have made full NI contributions for that time, but of course you will only be paid the basic state pension that matches the 8 years you put into the system

It is also handy to remember that for those who have worked abroad, may have been contrib-uting to their version of NI and some of those schemes are more generous than the UK system.

Expatriates should plan ahead for their care needs in order to avoid big problems in later years, local charities and social workers have warned.

At a workshop organised on the 2nd De-cember by the British Consulate in Alicante, charities and social workers stressed the im-portance of thinking now about the future in order to avoid problems when expats get older and become more dependent on outside help.

Simple measures such as learning some Spanish, registering on the padrón and taking out a funeral plan can all prevent Brits needing emergency support later on.

The workshop brought together social workers and charity welfare officers from across Alicante and Murcia, and aimed to equip them with more information on what support is available for vulnerable Brits, both locally and back in the UK.

One social worker explained how it is es-sential to register on the ‘padrón’ in order to

access the same support as Spanish nation-als. If expats fail to register, it is important to realise that social services will later be unable to provide any help.

Kim Stollard from the British Benevolent Fund, a charity that helps Brits in need, says:

“I regularly see cases where a distressed British national needs emergency help be-cause they failed to plan for future difficulties or care needs. My message to expats is plan now so you can enjoy the future more, with the reassurance that you have thought about the care and support you will one day need.”

Heathrow Airport Travel Care explained to the charities and social workers how they can help when vulnerable Brits need to return to the UK, and the Red Cross updated the workshop on the agreement that was recently signed with the Embassy, which aims to help British nationals access Red Cross volunteer-ing opportunities and obtain Red Cross sup-port in English.

OPERATION CAPTURA ONE ARRESTED TWO JAILED

An Operation Cap-tura fugitive has been arrested in Spain on suspicion of being a member of an interna-tional drug trafficking organisation and two other fugitives who were caught have now been charged.

Michael Roden, aged 26, from Redditch, was captured on 4 November at an address in the town of Alomartes, Andalucia, but details could not be released imme-diatly due to an ongoing investigation being carried out in collaboration with the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Roden was one of seven peo-ple apprehended for allegedly belonging to a criminal organi-sation involved in drug traffick-ing, illegal possession of firearms, money laundering and forgery.

He is currently detained along with three men and three women who are Chilean, Romanian, Geor-gian and Spanish nationals.

Six house searches resulted in the seizure of approximate-ly 30 kilos of cannabis, drug packaging material, several firearms, high-value vehi-cles, 85,000 Euros and £600.

Roden, is also wanted by West Midlands Police in con-nection with the importation of 70 kilos of cannabis in 2013. An extradition hearing is expected to take place in Madrid this week.

Dave Allen, Head of the Interna-tional Crime Bureau at the NCA, said:

This week we have also seen Anthony Dennis who was previous-ly on the run for nearly two years in Spain, sentenced at the Old Bailey in London to 13 years 4 months in prison for his role in a major inter-national drug smuggling operation.

Dennis, aged 48, from Ongar, Es-sex, plotted with criminals in the UK and overseas to import up to three tonnes of cocaine worth hundreds of millions of euros into Europe.

He and his co-conspir-ator Anthony Wilson, aged 38, from Harlow, Essex, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison, were identified following an in-vestigation by the Nation-al Crime Agency (NCA) in cooperation with the Dutch National Police.

Dennis went on the run in Spain after his Netherlands-based associates failed to remove 67.5 kilos of cocaine from a shipping container at Antwerp in Belgium, which was later discovered and seized by the German authorities.

After his face appeared on a mobile digital billboard that was touring Spanish beach resorts this summer, he returned to the UK and was arrested in Hertfordshire.

Dennis and Wilson were sen-tenced at the Old Bailey on 18 No-vember after pleading guilty to con-

spiracy to commit a foreign drug

t r a f f i c k i n g o f f e n c e .

The men had been reg-ulars at a

café in Rotterdam that hid a global operations centre for international drug traffickers. The café could only be entered via a buzzer system and provided a meeting place where crim-inals negotiated with cartel members and arranged the financing and trans-portation of huge quantities of drugs.

Dutch police officers covertly re-corded meetings that proved Dennis and Wilson were sourcing cocaine from South America and arranging its transport in shipping containers carry-ing legitimate cargo. Their associates were then responsible for extracting the drugs using corrupt port officials.

Coordinated strikes in the Neth-erlands and UK resulted in multiple arrests in October 2013 but Den-nis, who was in Spain at the time, evaded arrest for nearly two years.

Operation Captura is a multi-agen-cy initiative between Crimestoppers, the NCA and the Spanish authorities to track down suspected or convict-ed criminals on the run in Spain.

More information and pic-tures of the remaining 13 fugitives can be found in the Most Want-ed gallery on the NCA website at:

The war on drug trafficking continues as people continue to bring drugs into Spain through “Drug Mules” (people who carry drugs in or inside their body). The National Police dismantled a gang of traffickers in Benidorm last week carrying hashish which led to seven arrests of people involved in the gang. The arrests came as part of an operation during November and ended with the arrest of six men of Moroccan nationality and a Spanish woman as well as the seizure of more than 3.5 kilograms of hashish. The investigations began after national police arrested several people at the border post of Algeciras for trying to traffic Hashish into Spain they also found that Alicante were the drugs final destination. At the beginning of November at the same border point to a 35 year old male from Morocco was found to be carrying more than 100 packs of hashish, weighing

around 1kgThe police later detected that two other men who had crossed the border were hiding hashish inside their body, they used this opportunity to keep the individuals under surveillance until they arrived in Benidorm the next day, where they contacted a man and a resident woman in the town and that proved to be the Final recipients of the drugs. The police moved into arrest all four suspects and in this case police found that the ‘’Drug Mules’, had concealed a total of 209 packets of Hashish, weighing close to 2 kg.After these arrests police raided the hose of the couple who were receiving the drugs, where they found several packets of hashish prepared for sale and also arrested two other members of the family. The detainees, who had a history of similar incidents were brought charged after testifying in police

custody in which three of them were imprisoned. Hiding drugs inside the body poses a serious risk to health of the user, exposing themselves if any wrapping

is broken or punctured, and can cause serious bodily injury, often entailing serious consequences and a high risk of a fatal outcome.

DeaD nurse founD in home after five years

by DAVID ROGERSThe decomposed body of the 49-year-

old was discovered on Monday by work-men repairing the outside of her apartment building.

Workmen spotted the skeletal remains of the woman, named as Pilar M, on Mon-day morning while they were working on the outside of her apartment building in the centre of Cádiz, southern Spain.

“Some workers who were renovating the exterior of the building noticed an open window and discovered the lifeless body of a woman,” police sources confirmed.

They called the fire brigade which man-aged to access the apartment at around 10am on Monday and discovereand later confirmed that the body was that of Pilar M, who was born in Cádiz in 1961.

They also confirmed that no one had reported the woman missing and that she had left her job as a nurse in 2010 be-cause of “psychological problems”.

She lived in the flat inherited from her parents, who had died some time ago, and was an only child.

Utilitiy companies had sent her notices of defaulted bills, and finally cut the sup-plies after not hearing from their client.

The body showed no sign of violence, but police said due to the advanced de-composition of the body they were waiting for the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The apartment building had no other residents except for an office on the first floor.

day lunchtime for the grand opening of the prestigious new office of Golden Leaves International on the Avenida del Pla in Javea. On Thursday 26th November a gath-ering of 70 members of the U3A Vall del Pop met at Pepe’ Restaurant, Alcalali to have their brains tested at a Quiz Night. Peter Tomlin was the Quiz Master aided and abetted by Anna Cameron, both of whom had been determined to fox many of us with questions during the first half on Christmas and Food and Drink, fol-lowed by some corkers with the half-time cryptic Town Names and Dingbats. While scratching our heads for the answers we also tucked into our delicious supper and were treated to a visit by Santa Claus who presented everyone with a gold coin - chocolate ones of course in gold foil!

We then got our heads down for the second round for the Music and General

Knowledge questions, during which many groans were emitted as we tried to re-member golden oldies of music and film. After great deliberation the winners of the quiz, all of whom received a bottle of wine, were announced as follows:-

exhibition “A bit of everything”, produced by ‘Crearte Al-bir’, a group of painters which include - Carmela García, José María Kaspers, Pepi Martinez, Julia Serrano, Pepa Vazquez, Susana Gosalvez, Tina Lara, Olga Reinoso and Nieke Vanwambeke.

This association consists of amateur painters, and was started in 2008. They meet every Monday and Wednesday at the cultural centre for painting in a relaxed atmosphere. This is not a workshop and are not being taught, but use each other for influence and work side by side as they listen and assist each other. This association is open to anyone who likes painting and drawing and they have room for all kinds of people and styles.

“Our goal will is the expression of our artistic concerns through painting, drawing and perhaps in the future also other artwork,” they said from Crearte Albir.

The Department of Environment and Technical Services coordinated the an-nual strategic plan for cleaning, fumigation and pruning trees around the town of Alfas del Pi. This time, it is targeting at least 600 trees scattered throughout the mu-nicipality. “Pruning is common in autumn and winter, “said the mayor of Technical Services, Oscar Perez. Pruning will alternate between palm and

other trees, so that all trees are cleaned and pruned every two years.

“This year we will started the operation in advance to avoid leaf fall, in order to

reduce inconvenience to the public,” he added.

The program includes pruning and tak-ing the waste to a municipal plot to crush and to reuse as a natural fertilizer and protective cover in parks and public gar-dens. “Thus a natural fertilizer and at the

same time keeps plants and trees hydrat-ed,” said Oscar Perez. This performance is “a considerable saving of water” and also “avoids the use of unnatural fertiliz-ers, since the product acts as a barrier between the soil and trees, thus reducing health problems,” he added.

MUNDOMAR TESTS DOLPHIN STRESS LEVELS

by SPENCER WILLIAMS

Mundomar marine life park in Be-nidorm is now involved in a pioneering project to detect the level of stress in these mammals through saliva

This initiative has been developed by Loro Parque where a simple saliva sam-ple can detect the levels of the hormones which can be used to measure the level of stress these animals are subjected to.

Stress is a natural physiological reaction that occurs in all living beings. This method allows for extremely fast detection, and can be monitored regu-larly and allows immediate intervention if

necessary. This is a huge breakthrough in this type of detection, and now measur-ing hormone levels in blood is no longer necessary.

Saliva collection is fast and does not add to the stress to the animal. The taking of the sample takes a few seconds simply by swabbing the mouth on the mucous membranes to successfully obtain the desired sample.

Zoos and parks worldwide including parks in Portugal, France, Italy, Holland, Germany or Sweden and Spain, are also taking part in this new initiative.

The ‘Syncope’ ride in Terra Mitica has won the best attraction award for the 3rd time.

These awards are given to theme parks across Europe every year, there are 13 different categories which include “Best water attraction”, “Best indoor at-traction” (Dark Ride), “Best new attrac-tion” or simply “Best Attraction” - Terra Mitica has been one of the few Spanish parks that have won an award and for 3rd time the ‘Syncope’ ride won Best At-traction.

‘Syncope’ ls a pendulum like ride in-stalled in the area of Greek area of the park, it stands at around 35 meters high and reaches speeds close to 60mph (100kph) and is recognized internation-ally as one of the best attractions and Europe and won the same award in 2012 and 2013.

Terra Mitica Wins Best Attraction

A man from Belfast has been convicted of stealing £4000 worth of jewellery from an airport security tray.

Keith Howard (47), claimed that when he saw the jewellery in the tray, he was going to report it to lost property AFTER he returned from his week long holiday in Benidorm.

Howard from Banbury Street, Belfast lifted the jewellery out of the tray and told his wife to put it in her handbag on August 22 of this year.

He was convicted of theft after a contest was held at Antrim Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

District Judge Alan White said Howard’s account was the most ‘preposterous story he had heard in years.’

Judge White said: “You didn’t have to pick it up, you could have given it to security men standing three feet away. To put it into a handbag for a week and take it to Benidorm is absolutely ludicrous.”

Speaking at the trial, Howard claimed that when he found the jewellery in the tray in the security area - rather

than report it to staff or lost property - he would do this upon returning from holiday.

He said: “I saw the box had jewellery in it. I said to my wife that somebody had left their jewellery behind. I told her to put it in the zipped part of her bag and when we get back from holiday we would report it to lost property.”

When asked why he didn’t report it as lost property at the time, he claimed he didn’t know where to take it.

“Basically I didn’t know where it (lost property) was in the airport at that time and thought I would have more time to do it when I arrived home.”

His wife gave evidence at the contest, she said: “My tray was behind Keith’s he told me to put it into my handbag and give it to lost property when we came home. I wasn’t thinking.”

Judge White said “When people leave something behind in the security area they don’t expect it to have gone to Benidorm with somebody for a week. I have absolutely no doubt they were stealing it.”

He was trapped by the fire which apparently was caused by a short circuit originating from the kitchen in the house,

Emergency services were alerted by a 112 call and local po-lice Guardia Civil patrol and fire-fighters swiftly attended the scene

Specsavers Opticas in Calpe are col-lecting presents and donations for The Friends of the Children of EMAUS, a completely voluntary group of individu-als, based in the Northern Costa Blanca, whose purpose is to raise much-needed funds for the children in the EMAUS chil-dren’s shelters. Presents will be given to the Children of EMAUS spending this Christmas in care and the stores are urg-ing locals to donate new, unwrapped toys, board games, gifts and clothes. Carole

Saunders from the charity says “People needn’t spend much, even something sim-ple such as a woolly hat or some colouring books would make lovely gifts for the chil-dren of EMAUS.” Specsavers in Javea are raising money for MABS Cancer Charity.

Donations of non-perishable food and children’s toys would be greatly appreciat-ed at Specsavers Opticas in Guardamar, Torrevieja and Benidorm where they are collecting on behalf of the Spanish Red Cross. The Red Cross is a humanitarian organization with the principle objectives of providing aid for victims of disasters, those with social issues, health problems and environmental causes, as well as supporting those in need closer to home.

Please help us put the smile back on a child’s face this Christmas by making a gift or food donation, or helping with the fundraising at Specsavers Opticas stores on the Costa Blanca. All donated gifts will then be collected by the vari-ous charities and delivered to local fam-ilies for this Christmas and Three Kings.

A RECORD number of contestants took part in Javea U3A’s latest quiz.

Sixty-six members made up 11 teams at the monthly brain-teaser held at Javea Golf Club on November 19. And they had to dig deep to answer the questions posed this time by quiz compiler Jean Miller and presented by her husband Tom!

Team Meddlers eventu-ally emerged as top dogs in a closely-fought contest.

The successful six - Dave and Lorna O’Connor, Malcolm

and Sue Neill, Peter Christofis and Kenn Denton - were wor-thy winners and duly accepted their rewards - not quite Cham-pagne, but bottles nevertheless of welcome wine - from quiz organisers, groups co-ordinator David Grove and his wife Hilary.

The association’s next quiz is scheduled to take place at the golf club on Thursday January 21.

The Tram struck a car last week as it passed through the avenue of Miriam Blasco of Alicante in Sant Joan close to El Campello hand which luckily left the two passen-gers in the car with only minor inju-ries, with concussion and whiplash, it was reported by local sources. Apparently, the people in the car were tourists and failed to respect the signalling and clashed with the TRAM, which could not continue its journey and was taken back to the workshops of El Campello to be re-paired.

spain remains top european property investment

Active investors see Spain as the top investment target in Europe, with Germany follow-ing close behind in 2015.a re-cent European poll showed 27% of over 150 investors identified Spain as their preferred invest-ment target for next year, clear-ly indicating the strength of its recent recovery with values still well below their previous peak.

Humphrey White, Head of Capital Markets at Knight Frank Spain, comments “The funda-mental rationale behind invest-ing in Spain is even stronger than this time last year. Prime CBD office rents have risen by 20% over the past 12 months, but remain nearly 40% below the 2008 peak, and both footfall and sales have been increasing in dominant shopping centres for six consecutive quarters.”

Over a quarter (25.4%) of at-tendees chose Germany as their preferred target. Results mirror

the buoyant investment activ-ity seen in the country, with a total of €30 billion invested in property during H1 2015, an increase of 35% compared to H1 2014. -”We saw the usu-al trend towards the “big five” markets - Berlin, Frankfurt, Mu-nich, Hamburg and Düsseldorf, with 78% of total office transac-tions recorded in these cities.”

Joachim von Radecke, Head of German Desk at Knight Frank in London, comments “The in-crease is driven by the rising flow of foreign capital into the coun-try and the 50% increase of do-mestic investor activity. Foreign investors’ share of the German market continues to grow, and now accounts for almost 60% of all transactions in H1 2015.

The UK again featured strong-ly in this year’s poll, attracting 17.4% of the votes, on the back of the continuing recovery which has now extended to the UK regions.

The English choir of Teulada- Moraira were certainly stepping out in style for their annual Autumn Concert which took place last week at Salon de Actos. Dressed in their in their new blue sparkly costumes they treated us ‘A Transatlantic Conversa-tion’ featuring songs from the shows and popular music from both sides of the great ocean.

They promised us a feast of fun as they took us on a musical journey through the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s and the audiences were not disappointed. Excerpts from favorite American musicals such as’ Most Happy Feller’’West side story’ which ‘Paint your Wagon’ was first premiered in 50’s were contrasted with numbers from ‘Salad days’ and ‘My Fair Lady’ which were around at the same time in UK. For the 60’s ‘Oliver’ and ‘were compared ‘The Lion King’ were compared to ‘Sweet Charity’ The Beatles,Mummas and Poppas, and Beach boys music followed and the ladies gave a delightful rendition of ‘Queens’ We will Rock You.

It certainly was a fun filled evening and very professionally presented.Under the baton of Joanna Baldwin the choir are now well into rehearsal for their

Christmas Carol Concerts. The first one will take place in Lliber Town Square as part of their Christmas Market on Saturday 12th December.

The Choir will be singing at 18.30 pm but the market will commence at 11am and there are lots of events to join in with. A number of stalls selling Fancy Goods and Food. A petting zoo & Donkey rides for the Children and a troupe of performing geese to name but a few.

The Difference between a Ground Floor and Top Floor Apartment in Spain

On average, a top-floor apartment will set you back around 264,947 euro and measures approximately 112 square metres, while a standard ground floor has an average surface area of 91 square metres, and a price tag of 146,845 euro. This would normally consist of two bedrooms and one bathroom.

For those that like to have a better view and live higher up generally have to invest 80% more money.

Some other reasons people like to have apartments at the top of a building include more natural light inside the property and sea views.

However, living on the top floors and penthouses also have disadvantages, especially if the building old where it may be cold during the winter, also If it is not maintained properly, those living on the top floor could experience leaks from the roof or even increased humidity.

As mentioned top-floor apartments can be very cold, especially if you are in an old building, and depending on the build can be susceptible to changes in temperature much of it depends on the type of windows you have and the position of the sun throughout the day. In many cases could mean investing in some type of insulation for the winter and air-conditioning in the summer.

Ground-floor apartments, are usually always the last to be sold, but, which also can mean that you can often manage to save a lot of

money and benefit from very good discounts. It is always worth going to view a ground-floor property as you may be pleasently suprised. Some of them have interior patios or much more outside space.

The most expensive and largest top floor apartments or penthouses (also known as áticos) can be found in Madrid. Here they cost an average of 557,590 euro and have an average area of 144 square metres. Compared to those in the region of Castilla-La Mancha, where they are priced at around 145,390 euro and those in Cantabria are the smallest at 78 square metres.

The most economically priced ground-floor apartments, are found in Extremadura, at 101,397 euro. The most expensive and the smallest are located in the north of the country in the Basque Country and Galicia.

The greatest difference in price between the two types of property has been registered in the Spanish capital. With atop floor apartment costing 192% more than a ground-floor apartment. The region with the smallest difference is in Cantabria, where top floors are only 13% more expensive.

Sometimes the worst thing about going away on holiday to a place you’ve never travelled to before is the hotel accommodation once you arrive at your chosen destination.

It could be a matter of anything from paper-thin walls and noisy guests in the room next door that keep you awake all night to tasteless food at the buffet or a dirty swimming pool and a brick wall as the view that you look out to every morning.

Some of these things you just won’t find out about until you actually set foot in the hotel and they are certainly not aspects that are promoted in the holiday brochure or website.

The reasons mentioned above, plus many others that you could mention, have been all the motivation required by many to begin to look at other options on how they could go about organising their holiday away.

And now, the idea of opening up your own home to visitors and exchanging a two-week stay, for example, with the owners of a similar property in a location that you’ve always wanted to go to is not such a crazy one, and has actually become quite popular.

In fact, Spain has become the second leading country in the world to offer house swaps as a means of holiday.

According to online platform GuestToGuest, there are 17,000 properties on offer in this country on their website, with the most popular regions being Cataluña, Andalusia, Madrid, Valencia, the Basque Country and the Balearic Islands.

With national tourism rising once more after three years of declining figures, it has been estimated that 60% of Spaniards were able to take a holiday this summer. The GuestToGuest website has also seen numbers of the amount of people using their website to exchange their home for another increase 100% from last year.

GuestToGuest differs from other home exchange sites in the fact that it does not ask for an annual membership fee, which in most cases is set around the 100-euro mark. They have decided against this fee as they believe that most people will offer their homes genuinely as a mark of hospitality, which they would then expect to receive in return when they travel.

The site currently has 155,726 members from approximately 180 countries across the globe including France, Spain, Italy, Canada, Australia and America.

The great thing about GuestToGuest is that it is principally a social networking site where members can chat to each other, find out about where they live and make arrangements to house swap with interested parties themselves.

Which Companies Offer the Cheapest House Insurance?

Everyone wants the best deal and over the last few years prices have dropped, most likely due to the lack of demand because of the property slump.

Competition between companies has also grown, and,of course in most cases the main reason why one company will win clients over others is down to the price.

During the property boom years, house insurers could barely keep up with the demand as the majority of people that purchased a property through a bank with a mortgage had no choice but to take out a home insurance policy as part of the agreement. With the recent crash, insurers have been hit hard.

Consulting agency Global Actuarial has carried out a detailed study into prices currently being charged by home insurance companies what is on offer. The four companies with the lowest prices on the market at the

moment are: Mapfre, Plus Ultra, Reale and Zurich – all fairly well-known names.

Data was gathered for three types of property; a 70 sq. m apartment; an apartment of 85 sq. m; and a 200 sq. m duplex family home that gave the following averages:

Plus Ultra: 234€Mapfre: 241€Reale: 274€Zurich: 274€

However, many companies cannot solely rely on a low price to capture new clients. Some, more than others, are also very conscious of the importance of offering a wide range of other services.

Some are even offering services like repairing electrical

goods, such as kettles, or even distance IT support and assistance with fitting together and putting up IKEA furniture in a bid to stand out from other companies and attract new clients.

European Commission tells banks to repay customers’ hit by so-called floor clauses in their mortgage

People living in Spain could soon receive payouts after the European Commission told banks to repay customers’ hit by so-called floor clauses in mortgage deals.

Around 10% of Spanish mortgage holders are affected by the ‘clausulas suelos’.

Adicae, the association of Spanish bank users, has estimated that the clauses have cost the average client around €3,000 a year and have been partly responsible for 90% of evictions in Spain over the last few years.

These minimum-rate interest clauses charged mortgage holders higher rates, even when Spain’s benchmark Euribor hit historic lows of 1.3%.

However, the European Commissions opinion is not binding, but the ruling is requesting payment be made for the full duration of the loan.

Still to this day many banks are still refusing to remove the clauses despite Spain’s own High Court ruling in May 2013 that the clauses should be repaid from that date.

The banks that have removed the clauses include, BBVA, Abanca and Cajamar, with Caixabank also eliminating most of its clauses at a cost of about €220 million a year to the bank.

Banks that still need to remove the clauses include Sabadell and Unicaja.

auDi a4 revieWIt may not look radically different, but

the all-new Audi A4 is a huge improvement over its predecessor in every key area. It’s more economical, quieter, more spacious, better equipped and more luxurious than before, so much so that we think it’s better than its chief rivals – the BMW 3 Series, Jaguar XE and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Audi claims to have used the luxury A8 as a benchmark for refinement and it shows. Engine noise is near non-existent and even at motorway speeds there is barely any wind noise. The only sound that is really noticeable on the road is from the tyres, though this is still well-suppressed and is only an issue if larger wheel sizes are specified. The A4 is a very relaxed car to drive over long distances.

There is plenty of technology to make journeys easier, including active cruise control that will match the speed of the car in front, help maintain lane position and will even drive automatically in traffic

jams at low speeds. There’s also a range of safety technologies, such as automat-ic emergency braking, plus convenience tech like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to make in-car smartphone use safer.

The 150PS 2.0-litre TDI ultra manual is the best choice for many drivers thanks to 99g/km CO2 emissions. For a good blend of performance and economy the 190PS 2.0-litre TDI with seven-speed S Tronic automatic transmission is better, produc-ing just 103g/km with official economy of 72.4mpg.

For those who demand the best refine-ment and quality, the Audi A4 is hard to beat. It might not be quite as sharp to drive as the BMW 3 Series on a country road, but on motorways it’s quieter and more re-laxed, plus it is available with a huge range of technology. The efficient engines and low company car tax rates are the icing on the cake, making the A4 arguably the best small executive car on sale.

MethodTo make the pastry, rub 225g cold, diced butter into

350g plain flour, then mix in 100g golden caster sugar and a pinch of salt. Combine the pastry into a ball – don’t add liquid – and knead it briefly. The dough will be fairly firm, like shortbread dough. You can use the dough im-mediately, or chill for later.

Preheat the oven to 200C/gas 6/fan 180C. Line 18 holes of two 12-hole patty tins, by pressing small wal-nut-sized balls of pastry into each hole. Spoon 280g mincemeat into the pies.

Take slightly smaller balls of pastry than before and pat them out between your hands to make round lids, big enough to cover the pies. Top the pies with their lids, pressing the edges gently together to seal – you don’t need to seal them with milk or egg as they will stick on their own. (The pies may now be frozen for up to 1 month).

Beat 1 small egg and brush the tops of the pies. Bake for 20 minutes until golden. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then remove to a wire rack. To serve, lightly dust with icing sugar. They will keep for 3 to 4 days in an airtight container.

stirring continuously; bring the temperature up to 72°C then remove the saucepan from the heat and keep stirring until it has cooled to around 60°C, this will take about 5 minutes.

Once it is below 60C, pour the mixture through a sieve to capture any overcooked lumps. Add the vanilla extract and the nutmeg, stir and refrigerate the mixture. Once cool, add the plain yoghurt and gently whisk together for a delicious and refreshing eggnog.

You can add other flavours in place of the vanilla and nutmeg and/or use double cream in place of the yogurt.

Kanye West is ready and waiting for the arrival of baby number two.

North West’s little sibling is due around Christmas, but the rapper reckons his little boy will be on his way in a matter of days.

Kim Kardashian recently revealed that the baby was breech and that she was facing the possibility of a c-section, however, doctors have now managed to turn the little’un so now he’s in place and ready to go.

Speaking at Footwear News’ 29th Annual Achieve-ment awards, Kanye said that although he’s on the count down, he won’t be giving up work for his newborn because he doesn’t want to be poor.

He said: ‘I’m wait-ing on my son to arrive any day now. I look at my daughter and I

look at my wife and she’s rich and I don’t plan on being broke. I’m so, so focused on creating.’

They better hurry up and choose that name given that they reportedly can’t settle on the new addition’s moniker. Will it be Easton? Wild, perhaps? Or maybe she will opt for the obvious South, after Kris Jenner said she’s ‘counting on it’ being chosen?

SCORPIO (Oct 24th-Nov 22nd)Get ready to be on the move this week and weekend, whether it be connected to work or fun, or maybe even some Christmas shopping. Got travel on your mind? Are you able to get a weekend away before the festivities? Give it your best shot.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd-Dec 21st)Stick to the tried and tested paths at work this week as some of your more innovative ideas could be a bit unworkable in practice. Keep your patience if others demean your suggestions. What do they know? Focus on the positive.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22nd-Jan 20th)Work and career are on your mind a lot this week, so if there’s something that needs to be addressed, don’t leave it hanging in the air for too long. Embrace new responsibilities and show others you’ve got what it takes to be a leader at work and home.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21st-Feb 19th)Heart warming news seems to be coming at you from all directions, not of course that you’re complaining, so don’t be afraid to mix business with pleasure you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve. Be careful with money now. Save don’t splurge

PISCES (Feb 20th-March 20th)Let your intuition guide you when you try to work out the motivations of others. You know they’re trying to pull the wool over your eyes. You just don’t know why. Maybe it’s time to call their bluff. I’d pay good money to see that playing out.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)Although you’re quite restless this week, mainly because you don’t know what area of life to tackle first, your optimism is still infectious and others are drawn to you as a leader. You’ve got Christmas planning off pat, so focus on socialising.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)If you’re hoping for an ego boost from someone, think again. It’s the time of year where everyone is pre-occupied with the lead up to Christmas, so boosting your ego is not a priority. The lead up to Christmas is gathering speed. Hope you’re organised.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)Gather together all the relevant information you need and refer to it often to ensure the week runs smoothly. Others could even turn to you for a helping hand instead of the other way about. Prioritise social engagements as you can’t do them all.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)The weekend offers you a sense of freedom that you didn’t have time to even consider during the long, stressful week you’ve just endured, so make the most of it by doing something different, if possible, with those you love. A change is as good as a rest.

VIRGO (August 24th-Sept 23rd)Your valiant efforts to keep life on an even keel are going wrong, but they’re more amusing than annoying so don’t give yourself too hard a time, even when frustrations creep in. You’re doing a great job all things considered so hold that thought.

LIBRA (Sept 24th-Oct 23rd)You’ve got the gift of the gab this week and could literally sell an Eskimo a snowball. Be careful though as there’s still some hidden obstacles waiting to trip you up. Lady luck will appear when you need her most, most probably at work.

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)By the time it comes to the end of the wee the lunar low will have drained you of any energy you had and you’ll find it hard to keep plodding on. Do what you can while you can, then allow yourself to get swept along where fate takes you.ARIES LIBRA

Drop QuotesNew!Drop Quotes, Abrand new puzzle just for you! They are similar to cryptograms, in that the goal is for the solver to uncover a hidden quote. A black and white crossword-style grid is set up for each quote, with a number of letters

“hovering” above each column. Your task is to “drop” each of those letters into the appropriate square in each column, until the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation (commas, periods, dashes, etc.)

have been removed. Good luck!

Health & FamilyDO YOU HAVE AN

OVERACTIVE BLADDER?Can’t pass a loo without

taking the opportunity to nip in?! You may have overactive bladder syndrome

Overactive bladder syndrome is also known as an irritable blad-der or detrusor instability (the detrusor being the bladder mus-cle).

Symptoms include:-Passing urine frequently

ie more than 7 times per a day. Some sufferers need to pass urine much more than this!

- Being unable to hold urine in for very long. You need to go, and you need to go NOW!

- Not making it to the loo in time. And ending up with a damp undercarriage!

-Getting up to pee more than once a night

These symptoms may also be caused by other illnesses or by a simple urine infection but when these have been ruled out and no cause can be found, overactive bladder syndrome may be diag-nosed.

The cause of this prob-lem is not known but suffer-ers have a faulty message system between the brain and the bladder! In a nor-mal situation, the bladder fills with urine and when it needs to be emptied a message is sent to the brain to tell us to find a loo soon. We have plenty of time to find a convenience get comfortably seated, the bladder muscle contracts and urine is ex-

pelled.Not so with

overactive blad-der syndrome! Faulty signals cause the blad-der to contract suddenly and in an erratic fash-ion even when there is very lit-tle urine in the bladder.

The problem is much more common than you might think, probably due to the fact that peo-ple feel embarrassed about blad-der problems and many don’t even like to talk to their Doctor about it.

Studies have found that as many as 1-6 people are affected and the good news is that there is a lot that can be done to cure the problem!

Overactive bladder syndrome can cause terrible embarrass-ment and curtail your normal activities and thus enjoyment of life.

If you are having problems with your bladder find an under-standing Doctor or Nurse to have a chat with. It could well change your life.

After their emphatic 10-0 win last week, Sere-na’s entertained the Lon-don Bar A team in the Be-nidorm pool leagues and were on the ropes from the start. Andy Scoffham, Tony Harvey, Tom King, & Nick Mcgrath put the London bar in full control by win-ning the first four singles and the latter paired up to win the first doubles match.

At the interval, Nick Mcgrath gave a little pep talk to Tom king & co and reminded them that they still had to win the match “this is important and it’s better to keep the celebra-tions on ice until we win” he said. Serena’s, now trailing 0-5 had to do something and had to do it quick. Serena’s took the second doubles match followed by the next two singles and all of a sudden, they were back in it as the London bar wobbled. With the Lon-don bar leading 3-5 and still need-ing one more point to clinch victory, it was Nick Mcgrath “The Preacher” himself up next and he did not dis-appoint. Playing some cool shooting skills he managed to steer his team over the line and on to victory with the match ending 4-6 to the London bar.

With Serena’s loss, it was the Tar-tan bars gain as they moved back to top spot with a strong performance against the ever improving Rockstar. Rockstar’s Juanfran Del Castillo put Iain Carmichael to the sword in the first game only to see his team col-lapse under pressure from a strong team. With the Tartan’s “Ryan ex-press” Ryan Robinson banging balls

in for fun, it is hard to see this team losing with the quality they have in their team. They took the next sev-en matches to leave the Rockstar shell-shocked and beaten. The fi-nal result, 8-2 for the Tartan bar and back to the top of the league.

After a shaky start, defending champions “The Grill House” have got their act together and have now won their last three games, including this narrow victory over the Yorkshire Pride A team. With the match tied at 4-4 and a draw looming, it was Bob-by Morris & Philip Cordon who sealed the win for the Grill house taking the last two singles matches. This win moves them up to 4th in the league ta-ble, three points adrift of the leaders.

Bobby’s bar entertained the Stret-ford Jukebox who were desperate to put things right after last week’s disastrous 10-0 whitewash. Leading

1-2 it was looking good for the away team but again, the wheels came off. Bobby’s bar won the match 7-3 which condemns the Stretford Jukebox to their 6th defeat of the season and they now sit precariously near the bottom.

The last match of the week saw the London bar B team pile more misery on the Peppermill winning 8-2. The Peppermill sit at the bot-tom of the league table but know if they win their game in hand, it will lift them above the Stretford Jukebox and out of the wooden spoon area.

All matches start at 9pm every Thursday, why not come along and join in the fun.

A South African judge on Thursday found Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius guilty of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, overruling a previous man-slaughter conviction.

The judge said the matter will be re-ferred to the trial court to consider an ap-propriate sentence. South Africa’s national prosecuting authority said it was waiting for the court in Pretoria to set a date. A retrial was not expected.

Pistorius is currently out of prison un-der house arrest after spending a year of a five-year sentence in jail.

Steenkamp was killed on Valentine’s Day in 2013 after Pistorius shot her through a bathroom door. He maintains he shot her because he thought she was an intruder. Prosecutors believe he became enraged af-ter the couple quarreled.

Judge Eric Leach said Thursday in the new ruling that Pistorius “never offered an acceptable explanation” for his actions.

Leach and four other judges found that an earlier trial made errors in delivering a verdict of culpable homicide, which is broad-ly equivalent to manslaughter.

In particular, the judge ruled that Judge Thokozile Masipa was wrong in applying dolus eventualis, or legal intention, when he decided to fire his gun.

“The accused must have foreseen and therefore did foresee that whoever was be-hind that door might die,” he said.

BENIDORM DARTS LEAGUEWeek 7 saw only two matches played

with the postponement of the tie between caspers and Hepburns. Foleys bar kept up there recent form with a 7 - 3 win at local rivals cocos. The tie was a close affair with chances for both teams to win legs and matches. In the long run foleys proved too strong although the tie could of had a different result were it not for co-

cos letting all their players play and not just their strongest team,so fair play to them. Highlight of the night for foleys was a maximum 180 from Mike. In the other game Camping villamar proved too strong for cuba bar winning 10 - 0 for their best result of the campaign. Again credit to cuba bar for fielding a team when things are obviously not going well for them.

This week sees Hepburns travelling to Foleys, villamar at home to near rivals co-cos and cuba facing another tough game with a visit to caspers. The table stands with Foleys on top with 19 points followed by Caspers with 11 and in joint third Hep-burns and Villamar. Bringing up the rear Cocos is on 4 and Cuba on 3
