Page 2: WATER POLLUTION

• any physical (temperature, oxygen), chemical (mercury), or biological (disease, sewage) change to water that adversely effects its use by living things

What is Water Pollution?

Page 3: WATER POLLUTION

Water Pollution• Humans depend on very small

reservoirs of water for all our needs• Water covers over 70% of the Earth's

surface and is a very important resource for people and the environment. Water pollution affects drinking water, rivers, lakes and oceans all over the world. This consequently harms human health and the natural environment.

tanks3. Industrial sites4. Injection wells5. Oil spills6. Soap from

washing cars7. Mining

Water Pollution Facts

• Every year almost 25% of U.S. beaches are closed at least once because of water pollution

• Americans use over 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides every year, which eventually washes into our rivers and lakes

Acid Rain Effects – Aquatic Systems• When the pH drops below 6.0 ph species start to die off.• 40% of U.S. rivers are too polluted for aquatic life to survive

Harmful to Human and Animals

• Virtually all types of water pollution are harmful to the health of humans and animals. Water pollution may not damage our health immediately but can be harmful after long term exposure. Different forms of pollutants affect the health of animals in different ways.

Our Society needs a better understanding of how we get clean water for all human needs.• It isn’t the pollution that’s harming the environment.

It’s the impurities in our air and water that are doing it. - Dan Quayle
