Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is internationally well knowncapital of knowledge, situated in the holy city of Varanasi. This wasfounded by the great nationalist leader and visionary, Pt. MadanMohan Malviya Ji, in 1916. The university comprises 2 campuses, 5Institutes, 16 Faculties, more than 120 Departments, 4 AdvancedCentres and 4 Interdisciplinary Schools. The Institute of Agricultural Sciences, formally established inAugust 1980 had its inception as Institute of Agricultural Research,Banaras Hindu University in 1931. The Institute is one of thepioneers in starting postgraduate teaching and research programmesin agriculture in India, the only other institution being at Lyallpur(now in Pakistan). In fact, the Institute of Agricultural Research isthe first to offer M.Sc. & Ph.D. degree in India.

ABOUT THE HOST UNIVERSITY Varanasi nickname Kashi, is a city situated on the bank of the holyriver Ganges (Ganga) in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. It is amongst theseven sacred cities (Saptha puri) mentioned in the ancient text. It isone of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. GautamaBuddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath located in Varanasi. Gangesin Varanasi has nearly 100 ghats. The city traverses several templesincluding famous temple of Lord Shiva i.e. Kashi Vishwanath(Jyotirling), Durga Kund, Sankat Mochan, Bharat Mata, Tulsi ManasMandir, Tilbhandeshwar temple, to mention a few. In the 16thcentury, Varanasi experienced a cultural revival under the Mughalemperor Akbar who patronised the city, and built two large templesdedicated to Shiva and Vishnu, though much of modern Varanasiwas built during the 18th century, by the Maratha and Brahmin kings.The Kingdom of Benares was given official status by the Mughals in1737, and continued as a dynasty-governed area until Indianindependence in 1947. Legands like Tulsidas, Kabirdas, BismillaKhan, Pt. Ravi Shankar, Sitara Devi, Girija Devi, Ronu Majumdar, toname a few, once lived in Varanasi.

Varanasi is a noted centre for silk weaving and brassware, LangraMangoes, Banarasi paan (betel leaf), Khoa (a milk product) andsmall scale industries.

The history of the department dates back to the year 1945 when aSection of Agricultural Chemistry came into existence which got itsdue recognition as a Department of Soil Science and AgriculturalChemistry in the year 1968. Since then, the department hassuccessfully churned out plethora of eminent personalities withspecialization in different thematic areas of soil science andagricultural chemistry such that it attracted the attention of theNoble Committee in 1972 and invited Prof. Sant Singh to submit hisproposal for Noble Prize in Chemistry. The department has a widerange of collaboration within and outside the country, a richalumnus, learned faculty members and a strong academic cumresearch interest, kindling aspirations in the young minds andkeeping abreast with the changing scenario of agriculture at thenational and international platform. The department is celebratingits Golden Jubilee this year.
