“Hands Across the City” Will Make A Difference on May 30th!

Based on the information we are receiving through our successful canvassing of the Courthouse Green community (many thanks to all who helped!), we are gearing up for a local mission, our first Hands Across the City Blitz Clean-Up Day, on May 30th, 7:30am to 4:30pm, doing external work to improve the homes of people in need.

Our work will include: * trash pick-up * raking * mulching & general yard work * exterior painting * cleaning gutters * minor home repair to the exterior of homes

You can come for part of the day or all of the day and we will have lunch for you in the community. Children and youth are welcome to participate with parent or grandparent supervision and will be assigned to sites that are appropriate for their ages.

We need: site leaders, workers of all ages, a lunch crew, tools and some pick-up trucks for mulch (tools include: rakes, power washers, paint brushes, paint scrapers, etc.). The rain date for this event is Saturday, June 6.

Please see sign-up info sheets in the Sunday School classes and the welcome tables to sign up for May 30th or online at wmumc.org & Facebook. For more information contact Pastor Gina at [email protected].

Courthouse Green is a 1000+ home community located near our church in our neighborhood of Denbigh, behind the area where the K-Mart was located. This is a diverse community that is noted as “at-risk” due to the percentage of aging and low- income residents, as well as the growing influence of crime in that area.

So, pray for our neighbors and come out to help make a difference.

How about if you let everyone know! Church T-shirts will be ordered on May 18 – do not be left out!

You have the option of adult sizes S, M, L, XL, 2x, 3x and Youth sizes XS, S, M, L and XL. Both youth and adult

T-shirts will be available in either Deep Blue or Wow Pink and will have the same green lettering. (Please note

that there may be a slight difference in the T-shirt style and colors between youth and adults because the same

T- shirt is not available.)

The cost for the shirts will be $16. ($19 for adult 2x

and 3x sizes.) Proceeds from the shirt sale will go

towards the Red Bird Mission trip.

Either contact the church office or Peggy Langille through

the week to place your order. On Sunday May 17, Peggy

will be taking orders in the Lampstand gathering area 8:30-

9am and 10-10:15 and the Sunday school hallway from

10:30-11:30.

UMCOR Nepal Response - How You Can Help: United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the disaster-relief arm of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, is responding to the devastating earthquakes that have rocked Nepal killing more than 3,700 people and injuring over 6,500. Search and rescue operations continue. Countless people are homeless.

UMCOR approved a grant of $90,000 for international partner GlobalMedic to bring sorely needed clean water to survivors through provision of household and public water-filtration units. UMCOR also is in conversation with United Mission to Nepal (UMN), a partner in community-based health and education projects in Nepal for more than 60 years.

Give to UMCOR International Disaster Response, Advance #982450. Your gifts to UMCOR International Disaster Response make it possible for UMCOR to respond quickly to emergency situations through local and international partners. You can place your donation in the offering plate with Advance #982450 in the memo line.

Thank You to all those hardy souls who participated in the spring “Trustees Workday” on Saturday, May 9! Much good work was accomplished, both inside and outside our Church; great fellowship was enjoyed and a delicious lunch was shared. Participating individuals included: our organizer and director, Marsha Six, Joyce and Henry Bennett, Frank Blake, Tom and Marilyn Harris, Barry and Ann Barley, Kevin and Isaiah Moorehead, Jim Cole, Suzanne Lyon, Harry Acuna, Lynnah Mancil, Sandy Marcuson, Donna Rote, Linda Brooks, Judy Wilson, Jerry Haynes, Norma MacLuskie, and Leta Shannon. Others who participate year round in keeping the Church and grounds looking great are much appreciated also! Thanks again! The Trustees

Kits for Conference: You are invited to be part of a 75 year tradition in providing relief supply kits to vulnerable people across the globe. Every year our church helps UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) by sending kits to our annual Virginia Conference. Cleaning buckets and bedding, sewing, birthing, health, school and layette kits are then sent to the UMCOR warehouse in Louisiana, the primary distribution point for these much needed life-sustaining items. UMCOR has asked the local churches this year to help replenish their supply of school and health kits. The WMUMC Women and the Children's Fellowship ministry have already prepared a number of health, school and layette kits. Now we need YOUR help. Last year the monetary value of the kits provided by everyone in the church was $2,174. The kits we have prepared so far have a value of $1,800. With 100 more health kits, we could provide $4,000 worth of kits! Please consider adding to our church’s efforts to support this very important and effective ministry.

One Health Kit includes the following items: 1 regular hand towel (15”x25” up to 17”x27”) kitchen, cleaning and microfiber towels NOT acceptable; 1 washcloth; 1 comb - no longer than 6” (no pocket combs or picks), rattail combs and combs without handles are acceptable with a minimum of 6” of teeth; 1 metal nail file or clipper; 1 bath-size soap -3oz or larger (no Ivory or Jergens); 1 adult size toothbrush; 6 adhesive bandages - 3/4” to 1” size; 1 one-gallon size plastic sealable bag; $1 to purchase toothpaste. Donations of any of these items will be put towards packaging the kits. All items must be new and in original packages. Any questions, contact Carol Beran at [email protected] or 886-1994.

Next Sunday is a Big Day for the Church!

We will celebrate the Church-wide tradition of Pentecost Sunday, which is the often called "the Birthday of the Church" where we recall the coming of the Holy Spirit to the early disciples after Jesus' resurrection. For next Sunday's Pentecost celebration, we invite you to wear colors that denote the Holy Spirit - reds, oranges and yellows.

Also, next Sunday we will join in Bishop Cho's Virginia Conference Day of Prayer for church-wide renewal and revival. We will have a special photographic prayer experience during our worship services that you will not want to miss. Please join us as we pray together with United Methodist's across Virginia for a renewal of the power of Pentecost in our churches.

Additionally, we will acknowledge the Memorial Day Holiday in worship and with a special display in our Celebration Center coordinated by Nate Jones. All are welcome to remember those who have served our country by participate in the annual Memorial Day. Please bring items such as pictures, uniforms, medal cases, etc. to be put on display on tables around the Celebration Center. No weapons please. Items may be brought with you that Sunday morning and pick up after Sunday School.

Please join us next week for this excited worship time!

Malaria Campaign Update: As of May 1, Virginia Conference United Methodists have raised $568,044.61 and saved more than 56,804 lives for Imagine No Malaria. That number does not include at least $41,565 raised at lemonade stands across the conference on World Malaria Day, according to Maria Maxwell, conference field coordinator for Imagine No Malaria. “I’ve received reports from local churches about how much money they raised in their lemonade stands,” Maxwell said, “but we haven’t received and processed those funds, so we are not yet including them in our totals. It will be exciting when we receive the lemonade stand funds and watch our totals rise.” The current total is more than halfway toward the goal to save 100,000+ lives by 2015 Annual Conference which will be June 19-21. Thank you again, for your support.

Volunteers Needed for Vacation Bible School “G-FORCE”: June 22 - 26, 2015. We are still in need of Pathfinders (persons who travel with the children) and someone to organize and coordinate the decorating team. Also, someone to work with Checkers (the puppet) during opening and closing sessions. Contact Bonnie Turner or Sharon Ellis to join the team. We are hoping to have a church and community Kickoff Cookout Sunday evening before VBS week (June 21st). If you would like to help with this event coordination, please contact Bonnie or Sharon. Bonnie: 877-0551 and Sharon: 872-8495. Also, register your children today on the link on our website at wmumc.org.

We Need Volunteers: Would you like to be a greeter for the 11:15am service. Please contact Kay Fippinger at 886-0738. We are also looking for part time teachers for the 4th/5th grade Sunday School class (starting in June). Please see Mark Keafer, Sunday School Superintendent.

8 is Enough Groups Forming Now - Are you new to the church and want a fun and easy way to meet members? Have you been going to church here for a long time but would like to get to know other members better? If so, then being in an 8 is Enough Group may be for you. It's only a 4 month commitment. At the end of the 4 months, the members of the groups will rotate to form new groups. At that time, you can choose not to continue in the program, if you wish. New Groups will be formed soon for June, July, August, and September. Once a month each group goes to a local restaurant of their choice for dinner/lunch -- the date and time is decided by members of each group. It's a fun and informal way to meet other members of the church. If you would like to be added to a group or if you would like your name removed from the list, please call Cathy Haskell at 875-1604 or email at [email protected]. If you would like to be in a group that only meets for lunch instead of dinner (usually on Wednesday), please indicate that in your message.

We Need Your Help! Our Health Resource Team, HeaRT, would like to provide our church members and the surrounding community with programs and activities that will address health and wellness issues that reflect our needs and interests. To do this, we need your help! During the month of May, there will be a Congregational Survey available on our website (wmumc.org) as well as in the Narthex and Church Office. This survey is voluntary, but we need everyone’s input to best prepare for programs. This information will only be used for planning purposes. Thank You!!!

Evening Merciful God, for all that we have done and failed to do this day we turn to you for respite. Forgive us for having shunned your desires; rejoice with us over moments that have filled us with joy. Bless your people in every land with peace.
