C hronicle A Weekly Look at the Cottey College Campus The MLK Day of Service Saturday, January 18, 1-5 p.m. Observance of Martin Luther King Day of Service will be January 18, 2014, from 1:00- 5:00 p.m. This year, Cottey student volunteers will participate in “spring cleaning” for the Vernon County Senior Center. Angie Daniels, center director, says that this type of volunteer work will be helpful to the overall operation of the senior center and greatly appreciated by the staff and seniors. Volunteer recruitment will be coordinated by Chaymaa Bakhalek, volunteer management intern. Staff sponsors are Renee Hampton and Erica Sigauke. Grazie! CondolencesWe express our condolences to Dave Ketterman and his family at the loss of his mother, Elda Jean (Shoemaker) Ketterman, who passed away on December 22, in El Dorado Springs, MO, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 24, at the First Baptist Church of El Dorado Springs. Mrs. Ketterman was 88 years old, and a was a lifetime resident of El Dorado Springs. She and her husband Don raised five children, and were married 50 years before his passing.

Congratulations!Congratulations are extended to Tracy Hass Cordova, coordinator of P.E.O. Relations, and husband Jesse, on the birth of their second daughter! Annabelle Eve Cordova was born on Monday, December 30, at 9:55 am. She was 7 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 20 inches long. The family is doing well and enjoying their newest addition.

Alumna Guest ArtistDance Alumna Guest Artist Rebecca Whitsett (2011) will be on campus January 17-19, 2014, setting a dance on members of the Cottey-in-Motion Dance Company. The dance will be performed in the April 18 and 19, 2014, “Spring Dance CoMotion” concert. Rebecca graduated with her bachelor’s in dance from Missouri Valley College in 2013. She is currently teaching at Karen’s Dance Studio in Joplin, Missouri.

Student Service RecognitionIn recognition of their participation in community service projects like Join in for Joplin, the Multi-cultural Festival and the Cato/Cottey Fashion Show and Food Drive, ten Cottey students have earned certification through Missouri Campus Compact’s Semester of Service Passport program. Students are required to log volunteer hours in a Semester of Service Passport for their community service on and off campus as well as classroom and individual service-learning projects.

Certification levels and the volunteer hours needed to achieve each level are Community Contributor, 45-69 hours; Community Changer, 70-99 hours; and Community Catalyst, 100+ hours. Cottey students receiving recognition for fall 2013 are:

Faculty NewsProfessor Michael Denison, associate professor of theatre and speech, spent the last week of 2013 in London, England, on a first-time-ever vacation with his two sisters. They attended a performance of Matilda, the Musical, which was terrific, and mixed with the crowd of approximately 250,000 people on the banks of the Thames watching the New Year’s Eve fireworks and singing “Auld Lang Syne.” Professor Denison now feels rejuvenated and ready to face the coming semester!

Exercise Reward Program

The Exercise Reward Program is up and running! Anyone who exercises for 30 minutes can enter. Write your name, the exercise you did, and the date on a small piece of paper and drop it into the Wellness Envelope on Karen Polon bulletin board. Only one entry per day please. January entries will be collect through January 31, 2014 at 5 p.m.

January Prizes are: $20 in Movie Bucks, $20 gift certificate to Jenny’s California Café, and $20 in lunch tickets to Raney dining room.

Enroll in the following programs by placing an 'X' in front of the activity or activities you would like to participate in. Programs not receiving sufficient enrollment will not be offered so please sign up for everything you might be interested in. ____ I would like to attend a 7:00-7:30am aerobic and toning workout class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. This class will consist of a 5 minute warm-up, 20 minutes of toning/aerobic exercise, and a 5 minute stretch. Workouts will include aerobics, kickboxing, core training, and resistance exercise with bands or weights. Start your day off right with a morning workout. Workouts start January 21 and continue through February 27th. ____ I would like to participate in a Yoga/Stretch class lead by Jo Byrnes. Classes will start on January 21 and continue on Tuesdays & Thursdays through Feb. 27th. Class starts at 5:20pm in the large dance studio. _____ Roundtable: “Quinoa- A new staple for your pantry!” Quinoa is a highly nutritive food containing antioxidants, anti-inflammatory phytonutrients and is a high quality protein that cooks in about 15 minutes. Michael Richardson and Karen Polon will give you the opportunity to taste test quinoa as a breakfast, lunch and dinner meal. Participants will take all three recipes home with them to utilize at home and wow their family. There will be time for comments and questions. Buy or bring your lunch to the roundtable which will be held in the Centennial Room in Raney from 12:10 to 12:50 on Wednesday, January 22, 2014. Due to limited seating in the Centennial Room, only the first 14 individuals to sign-up can attend! _____ I would like to participate in an indoor Faculty/Staff mini triathlon in February 2014. The indoor triathlon will include a swim in the pool, riding a stationary bike and running on a treadmill in the Fitness Center.

Employees can participate in all events or choose just one! _____ I would like to play Faculty/Staff volleyball in the Hinkhouse gym on Wednesdays, starting April 2 through April 30th from 5:15pm until 6:30pm.
