Cottey Students Celebrate “Tuition Runs Out” DayAt Cottey, student tuition covers roughly 44% of the cost of a Cottey education. Tuition Runs Out Day marks the point in the school year when tuition “runs out” and funds from generous donors begin to support the remainder of the cost. To celebrate the generosity of these donors, on November 15 and 16, Cottey students signed a thank-you banner and thank-you notes to show their appreciation to Cottey’s generous donors. The banner will be on display during Founder’s Day in April, and the individual thank-you cards will be sent out to donors who have given towards the continued education of students at Cottey College.

This day is a part of a larger Student Philanthropy Project that educates students on the importance of giving back to Cottey. It also further expands on the “citizens” part of Cottey’s mission, helping students understand the important role philanthropy has in being a responsible citizen. To learn more about the Student Philanthropy Project, contact the Alumnae Office at [email protected].

Faculty NewsDr. Amanda Gilchrist, assistant professor of psychology, presented a poster, “Effects of Feature-Based Cues on Working Memory in Adult Aging”, at the annual meeting of the Psychonomic Society in Toronto, Canada, from November 14-17.

Student NewsStudent Field Trip: Little Rock, ArkansasThis semester, the theme for Social Psychology is what happened during the Civil Rights Movement, what has changed, what has stayed the same, and how can we explain the happenings through social psychology. Students travelled to Little Rock, Arkansas, November 16 and 17 to visit the Central High School National Historic Site. They explored the visitor’s center, with many visuals and audios to make the Civil Rights Movement come more alive; participated in a tour of Central High School; and engaged in a discussion with a former Central High School student/ current University of Arkansas student about what has changed and what has stayed the same since the Civil Rights Movement for various social identities.

As part of the course, empathy as a form of social responsibility and mutual interdependence as a form of ethical leadership also are emphasized. As a model of working with others, as compared to doing for others, students visited the Heifer Ranch in Perryville, Arkansas. Students learned how for agricultural communities, giving the gift of an animal and/or the gift of educating others how to appropriately care for and manage the outputs from an animal could empower others – physically, socially, psychologically, and financially, which can positively impact communities as a whole.

Students taking Social Psychology pose in front of “Testaments,” a Civil Rights Memorial depicting the Little Rock Nine.

Students Hit Nevada Square

Marketing students enrolled in Cottey’s “Principles of Marketing” class are organizing a shuttle to the downtown Nevada Square with the main motive of getting Cottey students to see the small businesses that operate on the square, as well as supporting the local economy.

On Saturday, November 23, a Cottey shuttle is going to take students from Cottey to the Nevada Square from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Some of the small businesses that students will be welcomed at include Interior Motives, Cavener’s Library and Office Supplies, Rinehart’s Jewelry, and more. This event is not only for Cottey students, as the public is welcome to come, shop, and get to know students. Hope to see you on the square this Saturday!

Eating Tips to Survive Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is a great time to spend with friends and family. It’s also a time where extra calories can undo all of your hard work over the past few months. Here are a few tips to help you get through your Thanksgiving festivities:

1. Savor your food: Eat slowly and really enjoy the taste and flavor of the food you eat.

2. Go easy on the alcohol: Wine and other alcoholic beverages typically contain excess calories so feel free to have a glass, but enjoy something with few or no calories (water) throughout the day.

3. Don’t skip breakfast: Your metabolism still needs started in the morning! If you don’t eat breakfast chances are you will be starving by the time dinner comes around and you will overeat.

4. Make healthier choices: white meat instead of dark, pumpkin pie instead of pecan pie, baked sweet potato instead of candied yams, and fresh green beans instead of green bean casserole.

(These eating tips are modified from a Barbara Baez article, 2012.)
