Denise Carrick Hedges, director of the Center for Women’s Leadership, graduated with honors with her master’s degree in strategic leadership in business from Stephens College on Friday, December 16. After two-and-a-half years of late nights, readings, long papers, and takeout dinners later, she did it! Congratulations, Denise!

Dr. Sarah Quick, assistant professor of anthropology and sociology, presented a paper titled “Fostering the future for farming and technology: Future Farmers of America” in the GMOS in North America and Africa session panel at the annual American Anthropological Association meetings in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The meetings were held November 18-21, and she also attended a workshop on Wiki-editing in the classroom among other panels.

Cottey alumna and adjunct lecturer in dance Rebecca Whitsett will be setting a dance on the Cottey-in-Motion Dance Company January 13-15 as this year’s guest artist. The piece will be performed on the April 21-22 dance concert, “A Spring Dance CoMotion.”

President's Suggestion Box

A request in the President’s Suggestion Box asked for clarification concerning the policy on allowing female employees to enroll in Cottey classes. The questions asked, “Do employees have to make up the time if they enroll in job related classes?”

Betsy McReynolds, director of human resources, shared the information below from the handbook:

3.27 EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY

“A full-time and .75 FTE female employee, female spouse, or dependent female child of a full-time employee may enroll in courses offered by the College at no cost for tuition, provided all prevailing admission and academic requirements of the College are satisfied. A dependent child is defined by the guidelines provided by the Office of Federal Student Aid for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).This educational opportunity is for tuition only and does not extend to room and board. Employees must complete one year of continuous service before they may apply for tuition-free enrollment for themselves or eligible family members. All other student fees would apply when appropriate.”

Ms. McReynolds added that while the actual “minutes do not need to be made up…her work [must be] completed.” She also noted that taking classes, either job-related or not, “must be with supervisor approval and yes, it is expected of the employee to complete her job duties.”

Class Cancellations or College Closures

With the arrival of winter, we wanted to share the procedures that the College will follow in the event that classes are cancelled or the College is closed.

The decision to cancel classes for the entire day will typically be made by 6:00 a.m. The College will send announcements via the ENS (Emergency Notification System), sending text/voice messages and emails and leaving messages on answering systems for any number provided to the College for that purpose. You can update your emergency contact information online at http://www.cottey.edu/emergency-enroll.

Public Information will put announcements on area TV/radio stations and on the website.

If it becomes necessary to cancel classes for any reason after the class day has begun, the same process will be followed. Check your text and email, as well as the College website, for class cancellations.

Our best advice for students, staff, and faculty is to check the College website and text/email.

From the Office of the President

The Serenbetz Institute invites you to SAVE THE DATE for this year's...

Lunafest raised $800 in 2015 and $1,000 in 2016. In order to meet this year’s goal of $1,200 to raise funds towards our cause, we are seeking contributions and/or donations. Generous donors like you are the key to our success and make it possible for Moss House to provide local individuals and families in need with assistance and critical services. Last year, it was suggested that members of the Cottey Community might be interested in supporting the effort beyond purchasing raffle tickets. We would like to invite Cottey individuals, offices and groups to create and/or donate their own raffle basket or supplies toward the baskets. Contributions can be in the form of gift cards, homemade raffle baskets, wish list item donations or monetary contributions for shopping. Please contact Robin Mallinson, secretary of the Serenbetz Institute at ext. 2116 or [email protected] for Lunafest donations or questions.
