Asians are the fastest growing racial group in the country with the fastest rates of growth in the American South. While immigrant and refugee populations are a relatively new demographic, both are introducing new paradigms in the standard conceptions and discussions of racism and social justice. Ms. Ho will address issues related to ongoing

struggles for human rights and her own journey to leadership and starting a nonprofit – including opportunities, growth, self-doubts and challenges.

Helen Ho is the Founder and former Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Atlanta, the largest Asian civil rights legal organization in the South. She led

Advancing Justice Atlanta’s public policy, legal education, community organizing and leadership development work to further its goal of increasing the civic participation of

Asian Americans in the South.

This event is hosted by the Serenbetz Institute with funding provided by the Alice Virginia Coffin Enrichment Fund for Cottey College. This fund was presented to the Cottey College Board of Trustees by Massachusetts P.E.O. members in recognition of the

Coffin family origin on Nantucket Island Massachusetts.

Spring Play: "Steel Magnolias"

Campus Events

Friday & Saturday, April 7 & 8 @ 8:00 p.m.Center for the Arts, Auditorium

Six women share laughter through tears, strength through adversity, and tolerance through friendship whilst changing hairstyles, swapping recipes and dealing with heartache.

Set in the 1980s in a small Louisiana town, Steel Magnolias is based on the author’s real life experience of the sacrifices of his sister and mother. It is a story of a beautician, a caterpillar waiting to become a butterfly, a Southern Lady, a mother, a daughter, and a cantankerous curmudgeon who has a heart of gold. It is the story of friendship and camaraderie, love and compassion, heartbreak and healing. It is the story of your mothers, your sisters, your wives, your daughters, your aunts, and your friends.

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $4 for students. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

Distinguished Speaker: Helen Ho, J.D.

Student HappeningsStudent & Alumnae Networking EventThe Student/Alumnae Networking event will be held on Saturday, April 1, from 3-4 p.m. in the foyer of the Center for the Arts. As part of Founder’s Day activities, the networking event is designed to provide opportunity for current students to meet and discuss career aspirations with Cottey alumnae. Thirty-nine alumnae have registered for the event, and will provide information on jobs and internships as well as career advice. Students participating in the networking event will have the opportunity to grow their professional network and practice their career development skills. Students are encouraged to dress professionally and come prepared with résumés.

Class Field TripTo celebrate Women’s History Month Prof. Spencer took students in her Women In Music class to a special concert of the kansas City Women’s Chorus on Friday, March 24. The Chorus designed a program that highlighted women’s heritage, heroines, and our hope for the future. The entire second act of the concert was devoted to a musical “event” by Eric Lane Barnes entitled, We Can Do It! which honored the women who took on nontraditional roles during World War II. The chorus sang of the Rosie the Riveters, Wendy the Welders, and many others, and the doors those women opened for us today. The photo features Alyssa Briggs-keen, Aschle Paladino, and Annie Cahill in front of some of the banners used for publicity during WWII and in front of a plane. The concert was held in Hangar 1 at the Charles B. Webber downtown Kansas City Airport!

Sophomores ellen Long (middle of photo) and Sallie Proudfoot (on the right) presented papers last week at the 2017 Missouri

Conference on History in Springfield, Missouri. The conference is sponsored by the State Historical Society of Missouri. Ms. Long’s paper “Civil War Women’s Memorials” told the history of the commemoration

of women’s participation in the American Civil War and explained the recent growth in attention to women who contributed in ways

other than as nurses. Ms. Proudfoot’s paper was “Call to Glory: The 10th Mountain Division Descendants.” It told the history of the

organization that some descendants of World War II veterans have created as well as explored why and how this group is particularly

tied to the memory of their fathers and grandfathers. The panel was “Military History and Historical Memory.” Pictured with the students

is fellow panelist Dr. Amy Fluker of the University of Mississippi. The panel was organized and chaired by Dr. Angela Firkus. Dr. Steve

Wagner of Missouri Southern State University delivered comments.

Student Happenings New Zealand TripStudents who traveled to

New Zealand for their 2017 International Trip had an opportunity to visit with

the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Women’s

Institute. The Women’s Institute was established in 1921 and is the largest women’s organization in

New Zealand. The Women’s Institute supports women

in towns and communities across the country in a

number of different ways. Sound like a group you

already know?

Additionally, students met the Honorable Minister of Christchurch, Nicky Wagner. Minister Wagner spoke very passionately about the future of New Zealand, the city of Christchurch and the need for women to take leadership roles and not under-estimate their abilities.

and have fun with co-workers after work hours. Art After Dark is similar to “Paint Nite” classes that are held in major cities throughout the country. Employees who sign up can bring their spouse if they

are willing to share a canvas. Art After Dark is free for employees and their spouse or significant other this session. Participants will be able to bring beer or wine to the event with snacks being provided. All employees who are interested in Art After Dark this April should email [email protected] to get

your name on the participant list. Participation is limited, so register now to get a spot! Call Karen at ext. 2251 with any questions.

Fitness Center

Anyone using the free weights, benches and other moveable equipment in the Fitness Center needs to put equipment back in its storage location before leaving the Fitness Center. Do not leave your lifting weight on the bar or floor. No one likes cleaning up a mess before working out!

Did You know.... ?

Researchers at the Cornell Food and Brand Lab, which looks into the environmental influence on eating behavior, have made some major findings:

• People in messy kitchens will eat more than their clean-kitchen counterparts.

• Junk food kept on the counter can lead to overconsumption. Individuals who keep soda or cereal on their counters weigh 20 to 26 pounds more than those who don’t. The good news? Those with fruit bowls on their counters weigh an average of 13 pounds less.

• Elementary school students will eat more fruit when it’s cut up than when it’s served whole.

• People will naturally eat less when portioning out servings than when eating straight from a box or bag.

SOFTBALL: This Week!

TRACk & FIeLD

The outdoor track season kicks off this Saturday, April 1, at emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas.
