As part of the Lakewood community, Paradise Cove tied together the corner of Garrison and Alameda, inviting community members and visitors to get a taste of the closest thing we could to paradise. The pink building and bright shutters screamed, “Have a Good Time here” and if that didn’t grab your attention, the fake beach décor, crab race Wednesdays, or steak and egg specials were sure to please. Recently the parking on the corner has been unusually empty and the sign that use to broadcasted various theme nights simply read “Closed”--heartbreaking to the Lakewood community. The Colorado Christian campus is left wondering, what’s next? Rumors fly with ideas of what could happen to the tropical structure, and here are my top three ideas of what is next to come:

Additional housing: Just as Colorado Christian has been transforming Lakewood duplexes into campus housing and offices, why not consider Paradise Cove as the next complex? Unorthodox, yes. But think about the fight to live in such spectacular housing. With some simple renovation Paradise Cove could become the most de-manded housing. It’s extremely close to campus, which makes the commute easy. Village roaster is just across the street for those early morning and late night study sessions. It has the potential, at minimum, to hold 15 students. They could even leave the name: “Paradise Cove House.”

A new and improved student union: The Cougar Den and current Stu are nice, but add fake palm trees and unique setting and you’ve got college magic. Imagine a giant flat screen, pool tables, beanbags and a smoothie bar and students would truly have paradise. It could be utilized as more of a relaxation hang out for students as opposed to a place to study.

An alternative to the Caf: The obvious decision would be to leave the bar and grill in the same type of capacity that it currently is in. (Minus the bar) Not to give competition to Sodexho but simply give the students more of a restaurant-type feel, as opposed to getting something to eat on campus. It could be a home cooked themed menu with a restaurant concept in order to give students alternatives to the caf or Cougar Den. Maybe the restaurant could have opposite hours of the caf to give students options in between open dining hours?

On January 21, Mary-am Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh of Iran came to Colorado Christian University and spoke about their suffer-ing and imprisonment for the cause of Christ. Jesus revealed Himself to these two women and brought them together to share His name and message with their Muslim country. After putting New Tes-tament Bibles in the hands of twenty thousand Irani-ans, Rostampour and Am-irizadeh were arrested by the Irani government and subjected to the horrors of Evin prison in Tehran, Iran. The government want-ed to silence them, but these courageous women chose instead to con-tinue sharing the Gospel with their fellow inmates inside the walls of Evin.

Millions of Christian brothers and sisters are being persecuted, often brutally through physical and mental harm, solely because of their faith in Je-sus. Here in America and at especially at CCU, God has given His people the resources to aid and en-courage fellow disciples as they stand firm in the faith. Voice of the Mar-tyrs (VOM) is a non-profit organization that raises awareness about Christian persecution from around the world and allows those with material bless-ings and the ability to pray to help those in need.

Dr. Phil Mitchell grew up in a strong Christian home in Wyoming, where he attended a local Baptist church. His devotion to Christ and for oth-ers started to become his passion at an early age. “All my youth, my dad was a building contractor, my grandfather was a Baptist minister, from there he comes from a long line of ministers in churches. In other words, I’m a sixth generation hillbilly,” Dr. Mitchell states. For college, he attended the University of Wyo-ming, and from there moved on to teach at a high school in eastern Colorado for two years of his professional career. While there, God began to steer his heart: “God decided to pour out his Holy Spirit through a school of fifty kids and only two were believers. In that position, I led a bible study, through which tons of students came to Christ… I still preach there today.” Then in 1974, he began attending Denver seminary and became a youth pastor. While there, he fell in love with Nancy, one of the girls in the high school group. They later mar-ried. Mitchell continued down the road of youth min-istry and became a youth minister in Colorado and California. He then came back to Colorado to enroll in the University of Colorado at Boulder. “I wanted to be a Christian presence in a dark place, so I en-rolled and got my Ph.D.” The university was some-what hostile to Dr. Mitchell because of his conser-vative Christian beliefs. Next thing he knew, he was dismissed from the university. “I was quite a media event and it freaked me out,” says Mitchell. “But...I owe my deepest thanks to CU Boulder.” Then he came to CCU, and has been here for seven years. “I love it here. Nancy and I felt God leading us to plant our family and he wanted us to adopt. So we have three children from India, Tennessee, and Florida.” Dr. Mitchell and his wife wanted to provide children with a home, so along with their birth children, they accepted everyone. “We love kids and we home schooled them. All our kids were pretty young so they grew as believers in our family.” Dr. Mitchell has also greatly influenced many of us with his humor and love of God. “…All in all,” he says, “I love the presence of God in this school and the students at CCU.”

Kelly found HopeLine on the CCU webpage. She saw an ad that was ask-ing for volunteers, and it was calling her to be-come apart of it. “I was in charge of it within a short time,” says Mergens. “Hopeline is not pri-marily a suicide hotline. It is also used for dat-ing relationships, spiri-tual issues, and suicide. Hopeline is a chat room designed for people ages 13-29,” she says. Hope-line is a community where people can talk to those who need help and give them advice. “I don’t have anything specific from my life that has lead me into this, but it’s been habit for me to always be there for people.” “My mom has been my inspiration, and anything I have had to deal with I’ve taken from her.” Kelly grew up in a Christian home, and her dad is a colonel in the army. When she was young. she lived all over the globe, includ-ing Germany, Washington, Kentucky, Texas, Virginia, Turkey, Australia, Alaska, and now Colorado. “I am the second old-est In my family, but I

have three other siblings. I have been a Christian my whole life. Because of that, the reality of how comforting God’s pres-ence and love is to me is worth sharing to those struggling,” says Mergens. “It’s comforting to know that in this world of chaos, whether in complicated relationships or suicide [God’s love] brings peace.” She remembers one inci-dent where there was a boy messaging the Hope-line on his phone. His girlfriend locked herself in the bathroom, wanting to kill herself at the same time he was trying to break down the door. “In this [situation],” says Mergens, “I was communicating through him and trying to make her stop and not kill her self.” “This is what makes it hard, after they are done talking to you. Not know-ing what happened and just putting it in God’s hands is the most diffi-cult.” At the end of their conversations they end with prayer. “Usually all of them accept our prayers and then we put it in God’s care. The Lord has used us to help those who have no one else.”

On January 16th, 2014, six new inductees were welcomed into the Colorado Christian University Communication Honor Soci-ety. The six students honored were Zachary Shier, Hannah Malone, Rebecca Tarantino, Rebecca Wildrick, Karleigh Stewart, and Nicole Rice. Students who are welcomed into LPH must be Communica-tion majors that have completed a minimum of 12 credit honors in Communication. They must also have a minimum grade point aver-age of 3.25 in their Communication studies; however, most induct-ees have a grade point average higher than the minimum. Lambda Pi Eta represents what Aristotle described in The Rhetoric as three ingredients of persuasion: logos (Lambda), mean-ing logic; pathos (Pi), relating to emotion; and Ethos (Eta) defined as character, credibility, and ethics. This is CCU’s fourth member-ship inductee ceremony since CCU was granted membership in Fall 2011.

She had come to the city full of excitement. This was to be a grand adventure on the wild seas of life, and she was the captain of her own destiny. But as the months went by, the real world began to show through the cracks in her flawed fantasy. As autumn came to a close, and the sky turned a stifling shade of grey, her mood faded to match, and her heart and emotions froze as solid as the fountain outside her apartment. She rode the bus to work, did her job, and came home. The only things that even resembled pleasure in her life were her evening walks in the young woods a few blocks away. It was early twilight when she took a path she’d never used before. From the looks of it, very few others had, either. The sun set quickly, and she turned back at a towering rock pile, dreading the monotony that awaited her back home. She’d only gone a few steps when an eerie mist rose off the ground. A few feet further, and the mist had gotten so thick that she could no longer see the path or the trees on either side of her. The temperature dropped, and she shivered, add-ing November to the list of things she hated about this place. Suddenly, she stumbled over a log that had not been on the path before. Figuring she could not get any more lost, she sat down on the log and rested her head in her hands with a piteous sigh. Shorter layers of her silky blonde hair fluttered dismally in the frigid breeze. Her eyelids had grown heavy, and she was re-solving to sleep in the forest, when she heard someone clear his throat behind her. Her heart thundered against her chest, but the skyscrapers and traffic jams had long since trained her features to show no emotion—even when she was as terrified as she was now.

Every issue, a writer from Inkwells, CCU’s literary society, will write one part of a story. Keep up with the whole story in every issue of Veritas.

When she turned, the stranger stepped out of his mist-made cloak, revealing himself to be just shy of three feet tall. On his head, there perched a most pecu-liar hat of an indescribable color. Around his waist was a thick leather belt, and on that belt was a set of heavy, ornate keys. He also wore a cheerful grin. “We’ve been expecting you,” he informed her, bouncing on his little toes. “What do you want?” She tried to feel in her bag discreetly: the pepper spray should be in the pocket where she kept Kleenex and pens… no such luck. “Come. You’ll see, Amanda!” With a strange, bobbing gesture that probably meant respect, the little man beckoned her toward the rock pile where she had turned back. It obligingly opened like some macabre 21st century Cave of Wonders; inside, it harbored a warm glow that seemed to be fighting back the swirling mist. Amanda stood agape. No one had called her by her name since she had moved here. It felt foreign, like it didn’t belong to her… and like she now belonged with this strange little man. Why not follow him? Who would miss her? Her dying house plants? The CEO of her company? With a sharp nod of decision, she took one step, and then another into the warming glow of the cave. The CEO could find someone else to pick up his coffee and éclairs.

The millennial generation has engaged in and been influenced by the eras of MySpace, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. What about a so-cial media website for the body of Christ? That’s ex-actly what Chris Burkhart and Wes McKinsey envi-sioned, and in 2013 they founded HeavenUp for a Christ-centered social media site. HeavenUp.com is a place where musicians, pastors, authors, etc., can seek Jesus and connect with each other. Network-ing, blogging, sharing mu-sic, videos, and pictures are just some of the things that users are able to do, all for the purpose of fur-thering God’s Kingdom.

Letter from the editor

Many of you have started reading this issue with the misguided notion that this is CCU’s first ever issue of Veritas. Sadly, you are mistaken. Veritas has been around for many years, but this is, in a sense, the first issue of a new beginning. Over the last semester we have seen many changes, and I believe we have finally found our voice amidst this age of technology and new me-dia. Although we still remain a print publication, we are working our hardest to ensure that Veritas will be around for years to come, no matter what form it is in.

We are a small staff, but nonetheless, a fierce one. Each and every person on my staff has worked tirelessly to guarantee that we are putting out nothing but our best. It may not be perfect, but it is excellent, in every sense of the word. We have checked, double checked, and triple checked each page, made sure it was edited by multiple individuals, apart and disconnect-ed from our staff, and most importantly, we have dedicated it to the Lord.

We hope that there is something for everyone in this issue, and if for some reason there is not, we always welcome feedback at

[email protected].

This publication is not only ours, but yours, and we are here for you! So sit back, enjoy, and be inspired.

Sincerely, Vannessa Jackson, Editor-in-Chief

Baseball season is upon us, and the Colo-rado Christian Cougars are here to play. With almost an even amount of returners and fresh faces as well as a new coach, the Cougars are feeling optimistic about this upcom-ing season. The boys opened up their season against Mc-Murry Uni-versity in Abilene, Texas. They dropped the first two games but were able to round off the weekend with a big 5-4 win. Senior, Taylor Dudley comment-ed, “It was a great team ef-fort for our first win of the year. Everyone did their part and if we stay com-petitive and play like we did this weekend then we should have a successful year of Cougar baseball.” After the opening weekend, Coach Hucheon said, “This was a great team win for our guys. I’m very proud of the way they hung in until the last pitch. There were a lot of

bright spots to build on from today. Our goal is to get better every day, and I know we did that today.” Austin, Texas will be

the team’s next stop, where they will be playing regional games against St. Edward’s Univer-sity. The Cougars will then open up conference play at home on February 28 and March 1 against Colorado Mesa University. Looking ahead to the rest of the season Senior, Sam Jones believes that the goal for the team is do some-thing they’ve never done before: make
